Tom Hiddleston posed with Elizabeth Debicki at the Met Gala: interesting?

wenn23815321

As everyone predicted, Tom Hiddleston capped off his magical American promotional tour with his first-ever trip to the Met Gala. What surprised me was that he didn’t go for a British designer – Tom wore a Ralph Lauren tuxedo, and he looked really wonderful. I love the white tie-and-tails on Hiddles. He looked great, and I hope he had a nice time. But what’s that circular thing in his pocket?!

Surprisingly, Tom’s rumored maybe-girlfriend Elizabeth Olsen was not in attendance at the Met Gala. It’s weird because she was on many of the advanced guest lists, so I don’t know what to tell you. I do know that after posing solo on the carpet, Tom posed with his Night Manager costar Elizabeth Debicki. Maybe Tom just has a thing for ladies named Elizabeth? I have no idea if we need to start some gossip about Debicki and Hiddles. I suspect they’re just friends. Also: her dress was not great.

I love tht he has to step up to be that much taller than her. They’ve been promoting Night Manager together, so I imagine they naturally gravitated towards each other. (For a picture!)

    • vauvert says:

I mean, they just worked together. But i am sure some fan fiction on Tumblr has them already married with a kid so whatever.
His RL looks fantastic. Love it. And her dress needs just a few alterations to achieve greatness – hem that pooling curtain bottom, and take in the pouty sleeves. There, done.

      • Tami says:

Agree but I would take the sleeve off entirely. Is she 6ft?

      • Dara says:

6’2″ or 6’3″ depending on which article you read – and that’s before heels.

      • lilacflowers says:

6’3″. She’s taller than Tom, who is 6’2″. She rarely, if ever, wears heels. She hasn’t worn them at any of the events for The Night Manager. And Hugh and Tom are both over 6 feet tall.

    • twilly says:

I agree. Interesting that EO was on the guest list as bringing a date (EO +1). She was in LA on Sunday at the Whole Foods market. What’s up with that?

      • Dara says:

Johnny Depp was on a few lists I saw as well, but I didn’t see him in any photos. Instead it was just Amber Heard looking decidedly dull (and not on-theme) alone on the carpet.

  2. Kate says:

Omg I love Tom but what is he wearing? This doesn’t even sort of fit the theme. He looks silly. I’m sorry. I hate saying anything bad about Tom!

  3. Meee4 says:

I’ll repeat part of my comment from last night on his last thread:

I love that shade of green on Elizabeth D. Yay for Tom wearing classic pants that fit and adhering to the white tie dress code

He certainly had a years worth of co-stars there to pose and dance with. Elizabeth D, Mia, Jessica, Sienna, and Brie.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Let’s not leave out co-star Rachel from Midnight in Paris, although that wasn’t in the past year like the others

    • ichsi says:

I love the shade on her too but I’m still a little disappointed. There’s a 6’2” lady with a ridiculous model body yet no designer can put her into something that befits the Met Gala? Why? Tom looks lovely but I would have preferred it if he didn’t pose on the upper step. Let the tall lady be tall, Sir!

    • Tara says:

I love Elizabeth D’s dress too! Gorgeous shade of green, nice pattern and flattering fabric/fit.

  4. MexicanMonkey says:

He and Idris Elba were the two best dressed men in the whole night for me. If I get a picture of them together I might die from the combined perfection.

  5. AlmondJoy says:

Was she informed of the theme? 🤔

    • M.A.F. says:

Not everyone went with the theme, her being one of them.

    • Lilacflowers says:

The theme actually applied to the materials and techniques used to manufacture the clothing. Hand beading or embroidery versus machine-made. So, depending on how the dress was made, she could have been on point

      • Cranberry says:

Looking at the official Getty photo, it kinda looks like that may be the case. You can see that it’s not just a print. The flowers actually have dimension, and the embroidery might have beading too.

      • AlmondJoy says:

Ohhh ok cool. Thanks for explaining, Lilac! I thought it was just about dressing in a futuristic way.

    • anon says:

Actually, I think the theme was widely misinterpreted…it wasn’t about the future of fashion (hence all the “robot” couture). It was about past technology meets future. ED was a guest of Prada who was a co-chair of the gala. The dress she wore was a Prada dress that was actually featured in the “Manus x Machina” exhibit. I didn’t realize this when I first saw it, I just thought it was gorgeous on her and the detail was so amazing but probably something you can only really appreciate in person. But it makes sense–Tom was at Anna’s table, she’s a huge supporter of his and has championed The Night Manager. AW has been known to basically dictate or at the very least give very strong “guidance” to what people wear. So it makes sense. I’m a little surprised she didn’t get a bit more play in the post-gala reporting, but fighting the pr fight with the Kardashians and their ilk is a battle even AW has given into.

  6. Brea says:

I think she is so unfortunate looking but I like that dress. Neither really went for the theme.

Is Tom a really great actor? I’ve only ever seen him in the Thor movies.

    • DahliaDee says:

I think a lot of women wished they were so “unfortunate” looking.
      *cough-cough*jealousmuch*cough*

      • Jenna says:

I know, right! She’s completely conventionally beautiful. You’re gonna have to *really* reach to describe her as “unfortunate looking.”

    • Chaucer says:

I wish I was that unfortunate looking.

    • Annetommy says:

I would hate that unfortunate figure as well…both elegant, though not a huge fan of the dress, and not entirely certain re Hiddles tux…

      • Sarah01 says:

I can’t think of any which way how she could be unfortunate looking. She is simply beautiful, her face, her figure, her height, her posture and the way she speaks. the dress can’t even detract from her beauty. It would be nice if her and Tom were together they look together.
I wish she’d dress more goddess like instead of these off putting designs.

      • Cranberry says:

        @Anne@Sarah
        +1
She is very lovely, and she would be a nice match for Tom. I think she is the most similar to Tom as far as likeness of features and mannerisms. Not so much in the face but general beauty and features like height, slender but ample and well proportioned physique. Mostly also cause they’re both very graceful in their movements, the way they hold theirselves and the way they speak. They both wear high fashion like pros.

Yup, she’s the female equivalent of elegant, handsome Tom. Whether she can be as fun and game as Tom too IDK. Certainly not as cringy and PuddleTom, but he can teach her. lol

    • NUTBALLS says:

Brea, your jealousy is showing. Debicki is in the 1% of beautiful women of the world, empirically speaking.

    • icerose says:

NUTBALLS I think Elizabeth Debicki is beautiful and poised. I love how well she carries her height. Her parents were dancers and she obviously inherited her grace from them.

      • Maxine Ducamp says:

Elizabeth has either the most amazing luminous skin or the most talented makeup artist ever. She is indeed unfortunate 😉

  7. Leah C says:

Can Hiddles be within 2 feet of a woman without people pairing them off? He was dancing with Taylor Swift last night and now are they a couple?

    • PrincessMe says:

Ikr? I think some people are just trying to rile up the fans.

    • Dara says:

For once, it wasn’t the Hiddlestoner’s that were freaking out – the Swifty’s (or a small but vocal percentage) lost their minds and set Twitter on fire asking if Taylor and Calvin had broken up.

      • KTE says:

There’s literally one fan account that had been trolling for reactions all day – since I checked Twitter on the train this morning till a few minutes ago, even tweeting @ famous people who know Swift to say she was cheating. Which is ridiculous, because there’s about a minute’s worth of video of them dancing and they’re not even touching for most of it.

      • lilacflowers says:

Well, she does throw her arms around him at one point but that isn’t an indication of anything. Sometimes, people are way too childish in the rush to couple others.

      • Dara says:

Not to fan the flames, but they arrived at the after-party together too and he even helped her change shoes. I don’t think for a second they are a couple, or even a potential couple, but that doesn’t mean the gossip press won’t milk this for a few news cycles.

      • KTE says:

She was at Anna Wintour’s the other night, too, so they’ve met before.

Still doesn’t mean they’re anything more than friends with a shared enthusiasm for throwing some shapes, though – it’s seriously not worth spending 12+ hours on Twitter writing the same unsubstantiated thing about it over and over again. I mean, there’s more to life, right?!

      • jammypants says:

Ugh did she “collect” him like all her friends? No Hiddles. No. Bad Hiddles. Where’s the spray bottle at?

      • Cranberry says:

        @jammy, Ha!
Here, use my spray bottle. I keep it handy to use on my puppy, but I can add some vinegar for particularly pesky nuisances.

      • MI6 says:

@Jammy: 😁 spray bottle. funny. He goes anywhere near that and he’s going to get a song written about him.

      • NUTBALLS says:

She is about the same age as Lizzy right?

Well, since Tom’s small potatoes at the Met Ball, dancing with one of the biggest (and social media active) celebrities in the world, was a publicity savvy move.

      • Dara says:

Nutty, your PR conspiracy theory instincts are contagious, because that very thought did occur to me too.

      • MI6 says:

@ Nutty and Dara: Damn, girls, I was trying not to think about that.

      • NUTBALLS says:

I don’t believe for one second that he preferred the company of Taylor Swift to all the lovely and more mature ladies & gents at the Ball because he and young Swifty “clicked”. He was getting column inches, plain and simple. Just playing the Hollywood game like a pro.

Many of the 76 million followers she has on twitter didn’t know who he is. Now they do.

      • Cranberry says:

        @Nutballs

Googled Swifty and first hit was US Weekly headline of her and TH having dance-off at Met. (Tried to post link but didn’t pass.)
A very savvy move indeed. I have a feeling Tom just got himself at least a years worth of linked to Swifty gossip.

        @MI6
        Too true! lol
Let’s hope it’s not too late and that she didn’t run home to start writing in her diary.

      • Cranberry says:

        @Nutty,
There’s another rather cute article on VF style about them both being uncontrollable dancers that have found each other. TBH, even though it makes PR sense, we know Tom can’t for the life of him not dance at parties (or any public event for that matter). Apparently Swifty’s the same.

I think he did all his schmoozing and catching up with the grown ups the first half of the night, and then I’m sure he just wanted to cut loose. After all what else can you do at these things? Not exactly quality time with friends kind of night. Everybody was probably good and liquored by 10pm or working on it, and I’m sure not too many people can keep up with Tom’s love of dancing or his stamina.

      • Sixer says:

        HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Tommy Omelette danced with Taylor Swift. That is the funniest thing to happen this year. I hope he gets interviewed about it forever and ever. And ever. He does this stuff just for me so that I can laugh, doesn’t he?

      • lilacflowers says:

        @Sixer, of course!

  8. lilacflowers says:

My husband Tom looked stunning and was properly attired per Anna Wintour’s specifications. Now, Taylor Swift was a bit too clingy on the dance floor. Eve? Eve? Where are you, darling, I need to borrow your shank for a moment.

    • Poisonous Lookalike says:

Yes, he was stunning. Even though it’s a bit old-fashioned, I like that the men aren’t expected to dress in keeping with the theme. The contrast of traditional tails and (what should be) fabulous custom dresses ups the wow factor for me.

Does anyone know if there’s a reason why Anna Wintour doesn’t dress to the theme every year? Seems to me that if she can’t be bothered, she really has no standing to complain if attendees don’t.

    • I Choose Me says:

Yes. I saw her trying to rub up on him but he kinda side-stepped her. ‘Course that could just be because he was aware of the camera (you can see him look up, notice he’s being filmed then laugh) and didn’t want to fan the rumor flames.

I wanted to shank her too tbh. I already can’t stand her and the fact that she got to dance with him irked me no end.

You know, I wouldn’t mind Tom hooking up with Debicki. They look so good together.

  9. Kelly says:

I’m sorry to say that circle in his pocket looks like a can of dip (tobacco)

    • Grump says:

      Pocket Watch?

      • lilacflowers says:

They were supposed to use pocket watches instead of wrist watches, although co-host Idris was wearing a wrist watch.

    • kai says:

Lol, my guess was compact powder.

      • erica says:

I liked when Tom described his tuxedo as “old school.” I thought he looked perfect.

    • Annetommy says:

Makes a change from the usual bulge in his pants.

      • NUTBALLS says:

Usually the pocket bulge highlights that main attraction.

I’d put money on it being a mint tin as I’d expect Tommy to be hyper-vigilant to keep his breath fresh being that close to so many beautiful women all the time. He seems a bit of a close talker.

    • jammypants says:

Could be a tin of mints. My mint tin is circular.

    • OhDear says:

Locket with a picture of his one true love*.

      * Gary, Carrie Fisher’s dog.

    • browniecakes says:

My guess is Apple Watch in pocket.

    • Cranberry says:

      Shoe polish!

I mean look at how shiny his shoes are. Mystery solved. You’re welcome. 😎

  10. SBS says:

I don’t mind her dress (there were a lot worse..) because her face is gorgeous.

  11. NUTBALLS says:

From the neck up, Elizabeth looks gorgeous. The color and cut of the dress look great on her, but the pattern doesn’t match the occasion. That would be a lovely dress for a dinner out, but not the Met Ball.

Tom looked fantastic and stuck to dress code. His pants went to his ankles… hallelujah. I’m afraid that circular thing in his pants does look like a tobacco tin, ladies. Someone please tell me otherwise since the thought of Hiddles with chew in his mouth is a boner killer.

    • Duchess of Corolla says:

I am going with mints in the pocket. Tobacco is too icky.

    • lilacflowers says:

I’m going with pocket watch because they were supposed to use pocket watches and not wrist watches.

    • NUTBALLS says:

Both sound more likely than tobacco, I agree. He needs a man-purse since the tin spoils the line of his pants, as does a cell phone.

      • waitwhat says:

I’d go with mints. He had the same tin outline in the Benny wedding pictures.

    • Cranberry says:

Ok. I’ve really got it now. A can of Dapper Dan!

Seriously, it makes total sense. He’s a Dapper Dan Man!

He probably had to do a touch up and was taking it back to some assistant when he got photoed. The world makes sense now. Cause there’s no way it would be tobacco chew. Never.

    • Sixer says:

Tobacco unlikely. This is an unknown habit in the UK. The plebby way to do tobacco this side of the Pond is to roll your own. I am so disgracefully plebby that in the long-past days when I smoked, I rolled my own.

      • lilacflowers says:

Be grateful for that. It’s a disgusting habit. Fortunately, it isn’t big in the northeast, except among baseball players.

      • Sixer says:

Does it give you cheek cancer or something? I mean, I enjoy the odd boiled sweet, but a clunk of tobacco inside my cheek sounds a bit disgusting.

  12. Duchess of Corolla says:

Round thing in pocket…could it be Ice Breakers mints? BTW, I think he looks great!

  13. Guest says:

I think all men looked like penguins. I just don’t like tails. I am also no fan of tuxedos. As for her dress: does this fit to the meme? I honestly don’t see her beauty. But hey, this is just me. At least his pants fit…. So no Olsen around? Who cares… Where is Chastain? I love her. No, I adore her. No, I just think that Chastain is pretty awesome. Sorry, fangirl of her.

  14. Madly says:

I think THEO has gone the way of the conspiracy theorists. She is denying Chris Evans the same way she denied Tom. And THEO hasn’t been seen out and about non promoting for months. Time to give it up.

    • lilacflowers says:

Time to take a look at Jeremy Renner’s Instagram.

      • Madly says:

Those photos look work related. What am I missing?

      • Lilacflowers says:

The snow pictures don’t look work related and his comments don’t seem work-related

      • neverland says:

lilac, do you mean the snowmobile picture? That is work related, they both had to learn how to ride a snowmobile for the film.

      • Becky says:

They were filming in Utah somewhere, the pics are work-related. Why else would he post them on Instagram.

    • NUTBALLS says:

She might be sleeping with all of them casually and joking about it publicly in hopes people don’t believe it. It’s not too far fetched in Hollyweird; tho’ in the case of Renner and Evans…yuck.

  15. Madly says:

    Ps, Taylor swift can’t dance.

  16. browniecakes says:

I may just be projecting, but doesn’t he look over it? His smile is seems a bit forced and tired – enough of cameras in my face now. I hope he is heading home soon.

    • Lilacflowers says:

My darling looks like he has slept in a different hotel room every night for the past month. Time for him to come home. He has rung up enough frequent flier miles for a fabulous vacation

    • MI6 says:

      @browniecakes: Ditto. Same observation.

  17. Snowball says:

I like the color on her, not the fit though. Tom looks good, very classic and English! I would also not object to any gossip on the two of them together, such a pretty, pretty twosome.

  18. Magnoliarose says:

He looks good but she looks like she thought this was just a run of the mill charity ball. The color is wasted on this dress.

  19. Diana B says:

    Oh, Tom, sooooo dreamy *sigh*…

  20. Phoebe says:

He did an interview on the red carpet where he said he just bumped into Elizabeth, as well as James Corden when he got there and it was nice to see friends and reports were that they arrived separately, so sorry shippers, but that pose was a little PR for the TNM I suspect.

I also vote for a can of mints in his pocket- you don’t get teeth that white and gorgeous by dipping! Gross! Can you imagine him in Ralph Lauren white tails at the poshest event of the year spitting tobacco into a champagne glass? Give him more credit than that, people!

    • erica says:

Yes Tom and Elizabeth arrived separately. In the red carpet interview Tom said “”I had the really, really great good fortune of bumping into Elizabeth Debicki, who was in The Night Manager with me, so it was nice to see her.” Most likely Ice Breaker mints in his pocket. They come in either tin or plastic containers.

    • Cranberry says:

Tom dipping? Never in a million years.

I give him more credit than carrying a can of mints in his pocket all night too. I think he was transporting something like maybe mints or perhaps a can of Dapper Dan back to some assistant or attendant after he touched up his hair.

  21. Browniecakes says:

TH’s been Ralph Lauren’s boy since Wimbeldon.

    • NUTBALLS says:

      Wimbeldon…. JArthy…. upcoming holiday….

That’s what my brain did with your comment, Brownie!

    • jammypants says:

He’s worn Dolce and Gabbana (burgundy suit) and a few others on this tour, but yea RL seems to be the brand he favors.

      • spidey says:

I think it was Armani who gave him a dj with Capt Nicholls embroidered on the inside after War Horse.

      • Dara says:

I like how he looks in RL – most of my favorite looks from the last few years have been their clothes. McQueen is a close second. The Ralph Lauren silhouette just seems to fit his body the best.

      • jammypants says:

oh right, he’s worn a lot of McQueen as well. I think his RL look at Wimbledon last year was lovely (sans hat).

  22. KTE says:

Don’t the celebs get sponsored to the party by the fashion brand they have a contract with? That’s what I was reading. They then turn up in their clothes. We know that TH has a RL contract.

Also, chewing tobacco is not really a thing over here, he’s far too well-mannered for a habit that involves spitting, and is not about to turn his recently-brushed teeth brown, so that round tin/tub is either mints or make-up. A pocket watch would traditionally be in a waistcoat or inside jacket pocket, I believe.

  23. Freddy Spaghetti says:

He may be a worse dancer than Taylor Swift, which I didn’t think was possible. Otherwise, he looked great.

    • joAnn says:

He knows how to have a good time and doesn’t care if he looks dorky. Part of his charm.

      • spidey says:

Quite, why do people have to dissect everything. He’d had a couple of drinks and was enjoying himself. It wasn’t Strictly Come Dancing.

    • KTE says:

I wish I could dance that badly!

Obviously they’re letting their hair down and free styling (I read that phones were meant to be banned in the actual ball precisely so the celebs can enjoy themselves) so it looks dorky, but they both move beautifully.

      • icerose says:

yes but he has been trained in formal dancing at RADA so was definitely his letting his hair down dancing and kind of cute

      • EnnuiAreTheChampions says:

I think he is capable of dancing beautifully and gracefully, as well as dancing endearingly dorkily, and that this was definitely an example of the latter.

On a related note, I saw someone comment that this was the “battle of the waving noodle person thingies outside a car dealership,” and now I can’t unsee it. 😀

  24. justme says:

Tom is not wearing a “tuxedo”. He is wearing full evening dress (sometimes called white tie and tails) as opposed to a dinner jacket, which is worn with a black tie and is sometimes called a tuxedo.

The only thing that worries me is that the waistcoat should not extend below the coat front, because it breaks up the trouser line. Idris got it right, not Tom.

I have no idea who the young lady is, but she is pretty and her dress is nice and she is not wearing the same sort of hideous makeup so many of the fashion victims seemed to have troweled on their faces.

    • icerose says:

in pictures i saw Idris and his white tails were below the jacket as well depending on angle.Maybe it is a an update-these things to change dependent on style.Having said that Idris won top male dresser and Tom came fourth

    • Sixer says:

Correct. LEGS was not dressed to usual standard. Idris – the world’s hottest man, by the way – was the one who got it right.

  25. A. Key says:

They both look beautiful! She’s just stunning.

  26. chloe says:

TH is gonna do an ad with RL soon so makes sense.

    • Dara says:

Really? That’s exciting. I’ve been wondering why no fashion/fragrance house has signed him on for a campaign yet. He’d be perfect.

  27. Jayna says:

I think that gown would have been beautiful on someone darker-skinned and dark hair. .

  28. Kilo Tango says:

    He looks amazing! LEGS!

  29. knower says:

I wish this guy was straight. Cause damn.

    • jammypants says:

He’s British. When asked if he was “metrosexual”, his answer was he’s straight but he has no issues with “metrosexuals” lol!!

      • Cranberry says:

He actually answered “Heterosexual” cause he didn’t know what metrosexual meant. It was cute.

Here it is starting at 1:09
        https://youtu.be/Z6zSWuw1B5s?t=1m9s

      • jammypants says:

That’s it! The details escape me 😅

      • icerose says:

it really does not matter to me what his sexuality is-is that what they mean by really British or have I just been lucky enough to work in organisations where your sexuality was considered a non event

    • Andrea says:

What makes you think he isn’t straight?

    • Cranberry says:

Kinda like I wish you weren’t a troll.

    • NUTBALLS says:

As our resident British expat T.Fanty has quipped,

“He’s not gay, he’s just really, really English.”

      • Guest says:

Nutty, everytime when I read this, I have to laugh. Imagine him wearing a shirt ” I am not gay. Just very british. ” I love that. As for Swift: never understood the fuss.
Just watched both clips. Omg. He did the Robot move?! 😂

      • Sixer says:

        E.F.F.E.T.E.

      • spidey says:

        Hey Sixer, where’ve you been?

Effete is the word that Whedon used, but it didn’t stop him becoming a big fan. 🙂

Personally I prefer mine with a bit of brain and not all brawn. But then of course some people will decide that means gay.

      • Sixer says:

Hi spidey. I’ve been overloaded with short deadline work. Broken the back of it now, thank heavens. I would like it known that I work to live and object most strenuously when forced into living to work!

Effete is the word because LEGS *is* very, very English in his effetery, but only in a very limited, Downton Abbey sort of way. It’s not the intelligence; it’s the lack of machismo. LEGS is just cultivating his nice poshie image rather than going for a Bullingdon poshie image. Non-Brits mistake that for gay. The rest of us don’t both with all that shiznit because our lives aren’t about cultivating our images.

    • Magnoliarose says:

I don’t get that vibe but even if it were true he’s still dashing.

My dream man is what Samantha Jones deemed “a gay-straight man” on Sex and the City. He’s got all of the great qualities/stereotypes that we love about gay men, but he will f*$k you. This is Tom.

@lilac, I just read that tweet (about his run) and thought he’s unstoppable. If I had just gotten home from a 2 week trip, let alone the last 4-18 months of work, travel, and PR he’s been on, I’d be collapsed in my bed for at least a few days. I guess that’s why he’s so successful and I’m not so much…

Running is how he relieves stress. Guess he’s still stressed about Lizzie skipping the Gala.

He is actually out doing UNICEF stuff with Justine Greening, Secretary of State for International Development, and a bunch of kids today. So no rest at all, regardless of jet lag.

@Twilly, running is a daily activity for him and he didn’t seem to miss your Lizzy at the Gala.
