J.K. Rowling promotes Fantastic Beasts with Ilvermorny’s history

We are still five months for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’s November 18th premiere. The promotion for this movie is not only inventive but completely addicting. In addition to the usual stills and announcement trailer, J.K. Rowling has written four-part original series for her site, Pottermore, called The History of Magic in North America. Not only can you read of the harsh conditions wizards and witches met once they made their way to the New World’s shores but you can find out about the formation of the Magical Congress of the United States of America. In her latest post, she gives the detailed history of Ilvermorny, the North American version of Hogworts.

Forget Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Slytherin, and Hufflepuff; it’s time to meet their non-Union American equivalents.

Those would be “Wampus,” “Thunderbird,” “Horned Serpent,” and “Pukwudgie”—yes, “Pukwudgie.” They’re the four houses of Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, the stateside institute that will be formally introduced in Warner Bros.’s upcoming Harry Potter spin-off franchise, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

The school gets its very own backstory in a new post that went live on Pottermore Tuesday morning—written, naturally, by J.K. Rowling herself. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the academy was apparently founded by a character who sounds an awful lot like Harry himself—an orphan with murdered parents, raised by a cruel aunt for 12 years before escaping into a wild and magical adventure, then eventually defeating her mother and father’s killer with the secret ingredient: love. Oh, and she can also talk to snakes. (Of course there’s a large emphasis on strange, mysterious, fantastic beasts in this story; you remember the title of the next movie, right?)

The Ilvermorny post also discusses how their version of the sorting process varies from Hogworts’ Sorting Hat. At Ilvermorny, the House’s symbol selects the student. If you can’t wait for your House to choose you, you can take the quiz here. I ended up in Thunderbird, who’s with me?

Vanity Fair points out later in the article that Pottermore was originally designed for J.K. to walk out a few characters that didn’t make it into her books but has evolved into this inspired promotion both for Fantastic Beasts and the play Harry Potter and The Cursed Child. I am nervous about admitting this but I am very new to the Harry Potter world. As a result, I’m a few books away from reading Fantastic Beasts making the Pottermore site perfect for me – I have gone down an absolute rabbit hole. When the teaser trailer hit, I knew nothing about the story and was only thinking about seeing it because of Colin Farrell. Now? I will pummel the muggle that gets in my way to the ticket counter.

    My childhood hero!❤️

  2. Insomniac says:

Thunderbird here too! I’m a Slytherin on Pottermore, so I assume Thunderbird is where all the mean North American magic kids go.

  3. LadyMTL says:

I’m Pukwudgie! I would have thought I’d be Horned Serpent, but apparently I’m bad at sorting myself, lol. (At Hogwarts I’m in Gryffindor whereas I would have sworn I would have been a Ravenclaw.)

And Hecate, don’t fret about being new to the HP world. We all have to start somewhere, right? FWIW I never read Fantastic Beasts either, though I’ve read the main novels several times. Enjoy it, you have lots to discover!

  4. Soprana says:

    Gryffindor/Pukwudgie and proud!

  5. Alex says:

So excited for this! Esp with a lot of promotion happening in NYC.
Taking the sorting quiz at lunch

  6. Melissa says:

    Thunderbird/Gryffindor! Guess I like adventure.

  7. Tash says:

    I’m Horned Serpent/Hufflepuff!! 🙂

  8. Hazel says:

    Oh, that looks fantastic!!!

  9. I love how Jo in fantastic beasts wrote that kappas are found in Korea while in prisoner in Azkaban, snape tells them that they are found in Mongolia .Even snape didn’t know everything!

I had a sorta crush on Eddie redmayne after watching him in Tess.

    • dokilis says:

Except that the Kappa is a Japanese mythological creature story invented to stop children from drowning in rivers…. so I’m not sure where anyone got their information from. At least they got the Asia part right

      • Elise says:

I think this is another case where Jo Rowling’s world doesn’t really have much to do with ours. “Morrigan” as a nickname for a beloved girl child? REALLY? The Morrigan is the Crow Goddess, of war and destruction. And I still don’t quite get why the magical immigrants from Britain would decide that instead of calling non-magical folks Muggles, as they do at home, they’d have to find a new name and come up with something as lame as “No-Maj.”

That having been said, I am STILL a rabid fan, am desperately hoping that the Broadway edition of Cursed Child gets livestreamed, and am counting the days to Fantastic Beasts. May Jo Rowling live and write forever, minor glitches notwithstanding.

  10. M.A.F. says:

I got sorted into Pukwudgie. Over in Hogwarts I’m in Ravenclaw.

  11. Lucy says:

I remember living the original story with such joy and excitement, and I wasn’t even 10 years old yet. That feeling hasn’t disappeared to this day. I cannot wait to see the movie!!!

  12. OSTONE says:

    Hufflepuff / Pukwudgie over here!

  13. Cee says:

Hecate I envy you so much. To discover HP all over again would be amazing!. I still re read the series when I can.

Jo will always be one of the most important people from my childhood even if I’ve never met her.

    I’m a Slytherin and a Pukwudgie!!

  14. T. Fanty Fan says:

    Thunderbird

  15. Lauren says:

I got horned serpent, I used to be a slytherin on the old potter more website, but when they changed it I ended up in ravenclaw.

  16. Chinoiserie says:

    Ravenclaw/Thunderbird

Wish she was writing new series but I guess I should not complain with Pottermore/Fantastic Beasts/Cursed Child play.

    • MellyMel says:

Team Thunderbird/Ravenclaw!! Also this is coming out on my bday weekend so I’m really excited!!!

  17. Norman Bates' Mother says:

I’m a Horned Serpent/Gryffindor. I was a Ravenclaw on the old site and I got pretty upset when the new one sorted me into Gryffindor but then I remembered how old I was. 😉 I will never stop loving anything HP-related.

  18. Jenn4037 says:

    Ravenclaw/Horned Serpent.

I’m American and if I can’t be a Ravenclaw, I’m not sure I want to be a witch!

    • Fergus says:

      Ravenclaw/Horned Serpent here too!

Wand: 12 3/4″ Rowan, surprisingly swishy flexibility, phoenix core.

  19. Reece says:

Slytherin/Horned Serpent I seem to like snakes.

  20. KiddVicious says:

    Thunderbird/Ravenclaw

I love the HP series, I don’t know how many times I’ve read it.
