Anna Kendrick: ‘I’d be terrible at being like Taylor Swift, the perfect Miss America’

anna1

Anna Kendrick covers the latest issue of The Edit. I think they were trying to style her like vintage Ann-Margret, sort of kittenish and sexy. I’m not sure how that works on Anna though? I like Kendrick a lot, but she doesn’t have that kittenish sexiness of Ann-Margret. Anyway, Anna is promoting her upcoming book, Scrappy Little Nobody, and a new film, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, with Aubrey Plaza and Zac Efron. You can see the full Edit editorial here, and here are some highlights from the interview:

She’s not into the fame game: “There was never a point where I was like, ‘If I could just be in a room with a bunch of famous people, that would be great.’ So I’m not surprised that I find myself riddled with anxiety over award shows and stuff…”

She was working back-to-back for four years & only recently took a vacation: “I definitely got to the point where I was like, ‘My life has been falling apart for four years, I need to get my act together. [After the vacation,] The world didn’t come crashing down, so that’s a lesson that I don’t need to be working every day.”

Writing a book: “I was so happy to create something that was all mine. Although, my editor kept saying, ‘It’s up to you, it’s your book.’ And I was like, ‘But could you tell me what to do?’”

She’s naturally snarky & the anti-Swifty: “I could play Madame Bovary and I’d still end up being dry and cynical. There are times where someone will be like, ‘Do that thing! You know, do your thing!’ I get mildly annoyed by that. But on a greater scale, I’m lucky that’s [my] reputation; when I’m snarky with people, they know that’s just how I communicate. I’d be terrible at being like Taylor Swift, the perfect Miss America version of interacting with fans
and making sure they have a good experience. I mean, I don’t want people to meet me and have it f*** up their day, but I’m glad I can say something weird to them and they know that’s just me.”

Filming ‘Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates’ in Hawaii: “I was like, ‘Is everyone wearing sunblock?’ I had an app for [finding] sharks in the area. Zac is such a daredevil that I developed this phobia he was going to get himself killed before we finished the movie. One day we did some cliff jumping and started out small, but by the end of it I was like, ‘Zac, don’t jump off that! Please!’”

She thinks highly of Zac Efron: “Zac is the sincere guy. Sincere, kind, helpful, generous – and then just so good at being an idiot on screen… Some people have a funny reputation, and they are so lovely that I want to shake people and go, ‘No, he’s one of the good ones!’ Then there are the ones who have these stellar reputations and I’m like, ‘That is an a**hole of the highest order!’ But I cannot say it.”

[From The Edit]

Even though Anna’s words about Taylor Swift are being interpretted as some kind of judgment or slam, she was trying to compliment Swifty. She was saying, Swifty knows how to treat her fans, that Swifty is earnest and fan-accommodating. Although “I’d be terrible at being like Taylor Swift…” could be the start of a lot of insulting statements, right? I’d be terrible at being like Taylor Swift, I could never organize a dozen pap strolls to celebrate a relationship that is only two weeks old. I’d be terrible at being like Taylor Swift, I could never hold on to petty grudges against another singer for years. Also: now I want Anna to tell us about the people who have stellar reputations but who are secretly a—holes. Who is she talking about?

She must know so much tea esp since people forget she’s been running in the big circles with her Oscar appearances and such. Let the snark fly Anna!
Anna (along with Jlaw) is my spirit animal. Her twitter is pretty hysterical

    • Frexit says:

I like Anna too. I think JLaw is just as calculated as Taylor is albeit in a different direction. Jennifer knew she wasn’t ever going to have the “perfect size two, prettiest girl in the room” title Taylor has going so instead she’s banked her career on being the rebel girl who makes fun of the perfect and popular girls.

Amy Schumer does something similar so it’s not surprising they found each other.

  2. Maria says:

i think she is kinda cool but i dont know why.

    • Locke Lamora says:

I think she’s kinda annoying but don’t know why-

Maybe because she’s always talking about how she’s not like other famous people. Or how she’s not in it for the fame. I call bulls**t.

    • MissMerry says:

I dislike her, but I don’t know why.

      • HH says:

Same here. I don’t know why. She just rubs me the wrong way. She reminds me of a conventionally less attractive J.Law in how she comes across. She’s anti-Hollywood but also everywhere at the same time.

  3. LadyJane says:

She was smart to reference Taylor Swift and get more mileage out of her pull-quotes.

    • Kitten says:

      Ha ha..yeah this.

I LOVE that cover shot of her–the composition, the styling, everything.
The other photos with the *prop cats* though…. I agree with Kaiser that the sex kitten thing doesn’t look quite right on her.
But I still love the overall styling, even if her modeling falls flat.

      • What was that says:

Being the current slave of a Bengal I can say not an easy option to pose with..I spend a lot of money with a professional photog to get some pictures of her majesty and I and they were not great…would not stay still and just got one of her walking over me!!..so no change to the relationship!!!…

  4. mkyarwood says:

I took it to mean she views Taylor as appealing to particular ‘brand’ of woman, and that’s true. I have a lifelong best friend (she, a Mormon sixth grade teacher who now lives in Utah, me, an atheist anarchist wannabe writer, but both of us moms and friends for life), who views Taylor as the ultimate expression of the American Woman. Powerful, ambitious but still empathetic, looks killer in heels and always has a ‘bless your heart’ ready for every fan. Anna Kendrick is right, when she says she can’t be that.

  5. Ana says:

Dragging Taylor for your own promotion? Not good. She rubs me like Jlaw, sort of annoying. Always considering themselves as some sort of simple and cool girls. Bulls..t!

    • OhDear says:

But she’s not dragging Swift though – she’s saying that Swift is really good with her fans.

  6. Brit says:

I like her. She’s accomplished a lot for her age as an actress but keeps it on the dl

  7. TIFFANY says:

Clooney. Clooney. That has been her biggest co star to date. Next is Patterson. I think he is a a-hole wrapped in a accent.

  8. KiddVicious says:

    I want that kitten.

  9. Nicole says:

    yay for bengal cats!

  10. Miss Jupitero says:

That kitty is a bengal, and they are amazing!

  11. Lucy says:

I love Anna and I know that she wasn’t taking a dig at TS, but why oh why is it that whenever someone dares not to kiss her ass, they’re immediately catalogued as a hater? Like wtf?

  12. lucy2 says:

I’d be curious to know who she’s talking about!
    She’s pretty funny, and talented.

    • What was that says:

I would put ‘a quid’ on Clooney..
That translates as a pound sterling which is probably now worth 50 cents!!!

  13. Kerry says:

    “People know that’s just me”

In my experience, people who have that sentiment use it to excuse their a-hole behavior. They also expect you to be accommodating and “get” it.

    No thanks.

  14. Ally8 says:

I was meh about her until I discovered her Twitter account. My favorite to date : “For someone with such an intense need to be liked you’d think I would have figured out how to be less of an asshole.”

Girl’s movies aren’t as well written: so trenchantly insightful.

  15. serena says:

    I love her!
