Kelly Rohrbach: ‘The world is uncomfortable with a really-ugly-on-the-inside woman’

kelly1

We can debate, in the coming months, whether Kelly Rohrbach can “act.” But what is not up for debate is the fact that she is a terrible model, right? Rohrbach covers the August issue of British GQ to promote the Baywatch movie, and the GQ photos are terrible. It’s almost as if Kelly never really learned the basics of How To Model. Perhaps that’s because she was only a “model” for about a year before she hooked Leonardo DiCaprio, then she traded in that connection for the part in the Baywatch movie. It’s almost magical how “dating DiCaprio” benefits a model’s career, isn’t it? Anyway, you can see all of the British GQ photos here, and here are some interview highlights:

On breaking into Hollywood: “I googled ‘top ten talent agencies.’ I just picked one, went there and got signed. I was like ‘Hey, I’d like an agent, would you like to be my agent?’ And they were like, ‘That’s not really how this works…but uh, sure.’”

On playing CJ in Baywatch: “I love unlikeable characters. I find them fascinating. The world is uncomfortable with a really-ugly-on-the-inside woman. So uncomfortable. I that that’s funny.”

On handling the press on-set: “I was like ‘God, I just wanna eat a bag of Doritos but there’s paparazzi everywhere, f*** it! It stunk because there was no privacy. My suit was that neoprene scuba gear material so it really rides up. They would use glue and tape it to my bum so it wouldn’t make a wedgie wrinkly. Everyday the paparazzi would shoot the costume designers doing the glue and there would be a picture of somebody with a brush, putting Elmer’s glue on my bum. I’m like, Guys I don’t think this is gonna get a lot of clicks. I am not famous.”

[From British GQ]

I don’t get “I love unlikeable characters”?? But maybe that’s because I’ve never seen an episode of Baywatch, as I’m just realizing this second. I thought CJ was the star/protagonist/heroine of the show? Is she the “unlikeable” character? I guess so. As for the rest of it… it doesn’t surprise me that Kelly had to be glued into her swimsuit, but it does surprise me that they were using Elmer’s glue. Surely they could have gotten better-quality glue? As for her story about how she got an agent… I wonder if she introduced herself to the agent as “Leonardo DiCaprio’s girlfriend”?

I don’t know why, but I think her face just isn’t photogenic.
    She has very harsh features.
Obviously, I can see why she is considered attractive (she has a killer body and she’s blond, basically), but I don’t see model material here.
It looks like she’s stuck in a permanent grumpy face.

    • Kitten says:

It’s her eyes. Heavy lids……or something.

    • lizzie says:

bishg – you are a very kind person.

but – i am not and i know why you think she is not photogenic. it is b/c she is not. no in the least. her face is simply not empirically attractive.

        “I love unlikeable characters”

Can someone please tell me what this woman is talking about? CJ was the most loved character on the show along with The Hoff character. CJ was sweet as cake with not one mean bone in her body. If you think about it all the female life guards were quite sweet. I think the show played them that way to make them likeable. I’m not afraid to admit( while hiding behind the anonymity of my computer) that I was an avid Baywatch fan. They lost me at Baywatch Hawaii, even with the gorgeous Jason Moma on it.

On a superficial note I do not find this woman attractive at all. How in the hell did she get the role of CJ? Anderson fit that role to a T, she was gorgeous, sexy and charming. She was the complete package.

      • Bridget says:

Anderson had something special. Even if her brand of sexy wasn’t someone’s cup of tea, there was undeniably something magnetic about her (and no, not just the 2 big magnets in front).

      • perplexed says:

Maybe the directors/scriptwriters have changed what CJ is like. Are we sure the movie will be faithful to the series?

      • kanyekardashian says:

I would venture to say neither is Giselle Bundchen. She has a man’s jawline.

    • Missy says:

I agree that she’s not photogenic. When I first saw her on CB, I thought girl looked rough. But oddly enough, she’s pretty hot in motion. She was a guest star on an episode of Broad City, and I thought she was gorgeous. Sometimes beauty does not translate well to the two-dimensions of paper. Also, her body is amazing.

      • magnolia says:

OMG that was her on Broad City? That episode was hilarious and she was awesome as Abbi’s old friend.

      • Missy says:

@magnolia It was! She was funny and believable – I was really impressed with her. Also, how good is Broad City??

    • HeidiM says:

I find she looks alot like Khloe Kardashian? Anyone else seeing that?

      • Fiorella says:

I see it ! even though I think this chick is quite pretty while khloe can’t seem to get any makeover that has ever made her face look cute at all (to me). I think it’s the meaty eyelids 😉

      • V4Real says:

Oh jeez, I see it; esp in the second pic.

    • Jillybean says:

Picture her with a football helmet and jersey on. That suits her more

    • susiecue says:

I think it’s her nose. And could she close her damn mouth? Once…

  2. eggy weggs says:

No way would Elmer’s glue work. Surely she is mistaken. Unless she meant the rubber cement and even then…

  3. Brit says:

I have to say out of all of leo’s recent girlfriends, kelly hustled the best for a job. she probably knew a relationship with leo would last for less than a year and used up all those connections. Toni should have done the same thing tbh

    • Locke Lamora says:

She might be quite famewhorish and a bad model, but she seems intelligent. And she’s got hustle. And in showbizz that’s often more important than talent.

  4. Kate says:

Why should the world have to be comfortable with “really ugly on the inside” characters? People gravitate towards people who are nice and make them feel good, and I don’t think that it is any different for characters in movies and tv. Sure, those characters should exist; they create the friction and drama in a story, but they aren’t meant to be liked.

Also, CJ wasn’t unlikable. She was a rule follower and a rule enforcer. That was part of her job on the show. She wasn’t the rah rah fun time girl but she was in no way unlikable.

    • Locke Lamora says:

She does have a point though. Films and series are full of male antiheroes, like Don Draper for an example, yet we rarely see such female characters.

      • Kitten says:

Yeah but a lot of people despise Draper.

Olive Kitteridge is a pretty good female antihero..Norma Bates, Skylar White.

It just occurred to me how absurd it is bring up the aforementioned characters, all of whom are well-written, layered, and complex as a response to a comment about effin Baywatch of all things.

      • annaloo. says:

        Cersei!
        Brenda Walsh!
        Maleficent!
        Scarlett O’Hara!
Alexis Morrell Carrington Colby Dexter Rowan!

I know there’s more, but I just wanted a reason to post Alexis’s full name 🙂

      • teacakes says:

        MIRANDA PRIESTLY!
        Kathryn Merteuil!
        Kara Thrace!
        Blair Waldorf!
        Samantha Jones!
        Carrie Mathison!

    • Lindsay says:

People will watch male antiheros though. Maybe that’s what she was talking about. Guys also get a lot more slack for bad behavior and assertiveness and ambition are desired traits. I really don’t know maybe I put more thought into it than she did.

Also they had dietitians and trainers on set. They took breaks from working out to shoot and give interviews. Granted they were probably harder on the guys but sitting around eat Doriotos was never going to be an option.

    • Wren says:

But truly “ugly on the inside” people are never the hero, there’s always some redeeming quality buried in there. The “heart of gold”, if you will. Some kind of morality, however twisted, will exist. “Ugly” may be the protagonist, which is different, but not the hero. Sometimes you’re supposed to hate the protagonist and that’s a point of the story. It’s supposed to make you uncomfortable.

I do see her point if you take the “ugly” part out and simply stick to”unlikable”. It’s a pretty glaring contrast that male characters are allowed to be unlikable without necessarily being the villain, while female characters MUST be likable unless they explicitly are the villain. It’s really quite ridiculous, but writers go out of their way to ensure the women are likable, because in our society we’ve decided that likability is an important female trait.

      • perplexed says:

Even when a male character is a straight-up villain with no heart of gold, audiences seem to find themselves drawn to those characters or find them compelling. I’ve seen that occur on soap operas. The male villains are cut way more slack than the female ones (unless maybe the female is 90 years old and is not meant to have any sexual appeal). So I didn’t find her observation to be inaccurate.

If the male villain is physically hot, people will go out of their way to try and find a redeeming quality whereas I don’t think audiences will go to that effort for a female character, no matter what she looks like.

  5. LannisterForever says:

She’s just not pretty. A lot of Leo’s models are bland but this one is downright weird-looking in the face. Lucky for her that her first movie role is vey body-based.

  6. Pri says:

Meh, how did she become a model? Following in Kate Upton’s footsteps, the sexy blonde model turned actress.

    • Kate says:

i heard that Kate quit acting. Is that true? I have no feelings about her one way or another. Just thought I’d read somewhere she left acting.

  7. OriginallyBlue says:

Ugh, is she going to be another “I’m just a normal girl who loves to eat and hang out” cool chick personalities? Don’t we already have Jlaw for that.

    • Carol says:

I think she might be. I saw Kelly on the Late Night with Seth Meyers and I thought she was ok, not too annoying. Really pretty though.

  8. perplexed says:

I have no idea who she is, but I found this interview amusing. It was hard for me to find fault with anything she was saying — probably because she made laugh. I guess I liked that she admitted that she’s not famous.

  9. Cherry says:

That’s some unfortunate photoshopping on the lower pic, yes? Or does she have naturally pixelled inner thighs?

Also, I don’t get the ‘unlikeable character’ character either- CJ Parker was the series’ animal-rescuing, unlucky in love-sweetheart, so I don’t know what that’s about. Are we sure Kelly’s playing CJ Parker? If so, should she not need bigger boobs? Serious question. CJ parker’s boobs were the real heroes of Baywatch.

    Also, lots of other questions:
    1. How does one acquire an agent if one is not supposed to ask for it? How DOES that work?
    2. ‘The world is uncomfortable with a really-ugly-on-the-inside woman…? ‘What does that even mean? And why is it funny? I feel like this interview has been translated from Japanese or something.
    3. ‘God, I just wanna eat a bag of Doritos but there’s paparazzi everywhere, f*** it! It stunk because there was no privacy.’ So paparazzi = no Doritos? Filmset = privacy, normally? Hell, I don’t have a lot of privacy at my workplace either. Should I complain to my boss about that?

    • Kitten says:

      I didn’t get that either.
Wasn’t CJ Pam Anderson’s character? or am I wrong?

    • Shelleycon says:

All I got from this was ‘mmmm I could really do with a bag of cool ranch Doritos right now’ that’s the extent of this ‘thought provoking’ interview for me.

    • Fire Rabbit says:

Her boobs were floatation devices in and of themselves.

  10. INeedANap says:

She sounds dumb but harmless. If she’s willing to put up with Dicaprio and his try-hard macho ways, give her all the publicity.

Elmer’s glue works well on skin because it doesn’t melt off with sweat.

  11. meme says:

she has to look better than that cover photo. that’s a terrible pic.

  12. Frosty says:

I really like her face, it’s just unconventional enough to be interesting. I could see her playing a tough dame, easy. Ugly on the inside – that’s true. There’s a good deal of pressure/expectations on women to be lovable at all times – never forceful or, god forbit, angry. And when we are, it’s more socially acceptanble to direct negativity toward other women (“cattiness”) than toward the more likely sources – limitations placed on us by institutions, traditions, etc. How that might play out in the movie, if at all, I have no idea.
Sorry for the ramble – haven’t attained peak caffeination yet.

  13. Aren says:

I see nothing wrong with how she looks. She looks like an adult version of that Topanga character.

  14. Frexit says:

Wow that is a really unfortunate cover picture.

  15. QueenE says:

ugly on the inside girls? what like the Kardashians?

  16. Luca76 says:

They are really making a Baywatch movie??? YIKES

  17. Adrien says:

Kelly is actually pretty when she is smiling. I don’t remember any unlikable characters on Baywatch. The show was intentionally camp. Hmm, maybe the time when Geraldo guested.

  18. iheartgossip says:

Oh you sweet young baby. The world doesn’t like any soul who is ugly on the inside. You didn’t need to hang it on simply women.

  19. Phil says:

C.J. was one of the most likeable characters on the show. Did Kelly think she was playing Neely? Neely wasn’t very likeable and Jenna (Krista Allen’s character in Hawaii) wasn’t all that nice at 1st…but CJ?

    • Kat says:

How do we know the CJ character isn’t a witch? Has anyone read the script? Just because she was sweet on the tv show doesn’t mean she’ll be sweet in the movie. Meanwhile, Kelly Rohrbach is gorgeous. I saw her once in person and she is drop dead. Her smile is mega watt…I do wish more magazines would show her smiling…..I think that shows her at her most beautiful and authentic.

  20. Velvet Elvis says:

Very unflattering cover shot of her. She’s quite beautiful when she’s smiling. When she’s not smiling though she kind of has resting bitch face and makes her look hard. Something about her reminds me of Connie Nielsen.

  21. Ange says:

She photographs about as fresh as week old bread.

  22. Nicole says:

Um I was on set on Tybee during filming, there were barely any paps. And they were all focused on the Rock and Zac, so dorito it up!
