John Cho on #StarringJohnCho: ‘My first reaction was, are they clowning me?’

The UK premiere of 'Star Trek Beyond' - Arrivals
I rarely say this but honk for John Cho! Star Trek: Beyond is out this week! I probably won’t see it until next week as I will be traveling, but I bet a lot of people will and that it will do better on its opening weekend than Ghostbusters did. (Projections have it aroung $50-$60 million.) It already has an impressive 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and it’s likely to be propelled by word of mouth.

John Cho (Sulu) has an in-depth interview with the New York Times which I thoroughly enjoyed. He talks about the controversy over Sulu being made gay, after the original Sulu, George Takei, respectfully disagreed with that decision. Cho mentions the party line about how it’s an alternate timeline, but he opens with Takei’s perspective and I get the impression that he feels sorry for the way it happened. I wouldn’t be surprised if he took Takei’s side behind the scenes. He also talks about being a minority actor in Hollywood, and he has some very similar observations to Aziz Ansari. Cho discusses the way that minority actors are typecast and excluded based on arbitrary ceilings for the numbers of non-white actors on a show. Oh and he discussed #StarringJohnCho, the social media campaign to put him in all the movies. He thought it was a joke at first but was then flattered.

George Takei recently said he was glad there was a gay “Star Trek” character, but he didn’t think it should be Sulu. What did you think when you learned about the decision to write Sulu as gay?
It was my understanding that George Takei’s Sulu was heterosexual. We have an alternate timeline in our “Star Trek” universe, but it’s the same genetic Sulu. So I was concerned that people would think we were saying that sexual orientation was a choice and not predetermined. I was also concerned that since it was a bit of a homage to him, George would say, “I’m someone who has worked as a gay actor to craft a straight character, and now you’re seeing just my sexual orientation.”

The posture of the filmmakers was that this was normalized in the future and it was nothing, really. It was a big revelation yet handled in a way that communicated it wasn’t anything the crew didn’t already know about him.

In the film, his family was portrayed really nonchalantly, which I liked. He wasn’t coming out of the closet. Seeing George Takei on television was very meaningful to me, and I hope there’s a similar effect for gay kids watching

You mentioned that Mr. Takei was one of few Asian actors you saw growing up. Did the lack of representation affect you?
I wish I was strong enough for it not to matter. It does, I have to admit. It still affects me, and not just as an actor. [A] movie may be as close to a document of our national culture as there is; it’s supposed to represent what we believe ourselves to be. So when you don’t see yourself at all — or see yourself erased — that hurts.

The #StarringJohnCho campaign is drawing attention to a lack of diversity onscreen. How did you feel when you saw it?
My first reaction was, are they clowning me? I quickly realized it was sincere, and it was kind of amazing. Maybe [it caught on], because the posters made it seem possible. Instead of talking about it or demanding it, it was like, listen, it could be like this. For a minute, people were talking about it in a very serious way.

You’ve talked about facing racism in your professional life, not taking roles that rely on stereotypes. You’ve had to think about these issues in a way white actors don’t.
You might hear something along the lines of “They’re not going Asian on this role, because there’s another Asian in the cast,” which is something you’d never hear if you were white. At this stage of my career, it’s more oblique. It can be harder to maneuver your way into the discussion for bigger roles…

Though it’s logical and necessary to think and talk about all of this, it’s a bummer as an artist to have to do it all the time.

[From The New York Times]

Cho also said that he would love to do Shakespeare or Westerns or even an Asian character as he’s deliberately avoided those type of roles to date. He comes across as thoughtful and smart and I just want to see all the movies #StarringJohnCho. Also, I can’t believe he’s 44! He’s older than me. He’s like Keanu Reeves in that way, there’s a real ageless quality to him. This means John Cho can be a leading man for many years to come. That needs to happen.

How the eff is he 44?? I honestly thought he was like 30. I don’t know much about him or Star Trek but I’m feeling him.

    • Rachel says:

That was my reaction, too! He’s 44??? Are you f***ing kidding me?

I thought he was, at most, in his early 30s.

    • Katenotkatie says:

#JohnChoForBond2017? I would be so down. He can figure out the accent.

    • DesertReal says:

It breaks my heart that so many talented, hard working, exceptional people are being pigeon holed, type cast, & held back in their line of work because of the color of their skin.
Im furious that I see & feel it daily at work (in the medical field) & then there’s people close to me (a certain anaylist for a security company) that in their fair world bias, genuinely believe that POC just dont apply/audition for those positions.
      Ridiculous.
Keep fighting the good fight Cho!
      On a side note
      44!?
Love love love a guy that can bring resistance, experience, control, strength and…what were we talking about again?

  2. JT says:

As an Asian Canadian, I love John Cho and all, but I would also love to see someone besides John Cho or Lucy Liu star in Asian roles. The amount of “you look like Lucy Liu” comments I’ve had over the years…

But in a time of whitewashing and limited roles for people of colour, then yes, I’m hoping on the #StarringJohnCho train.

    • Adrien says:

I think BD Wong is the only Asian guy who is lucky enough to play diverse characters. Sure he still gets those ninja, kung-fu typecast roles but he manages to get roles were Asians are not even considered to play. Ken Watanabe is still playing that Chairman type role.

      • Sharra55 says:

I love John Cho. I find him so sexy and I don’t understand why he isn’t cast more often. I am also with you on BD Wong….he is amazing in everything he does. Plus he is incredibly easy on the eyes.

So much talent and Hollywood can’t see past “Asian.”

  3. Karen says:

He’s a great actor. He should be leading in movies and TV shows. I was one of the (few) people who watched Selfie; he made a great romantic lead and had great chemistry with his Eliza Doolittle.

    • Zannoub says:

I loved Selfie, they cancelled it too soon. I’m sure with another season, it would have garnered enough momentum to stay for long.
He was amazing in that, as well as Eliza.

    • sunny says:

No, I watched it as well and he was fantastic! He is really good as a romantic lead.
He really is a wonderful actor with great range. Also in interviews, he always sounds like a smart, thoughtful human being. Love him so much! More John Cho! Hell, more open casting so diversity gets to shine.

    • Mandy says:

Honks for Cho and Selfie! Terrible name, great show. He and Eliza had great chemistry. I would love to see them in a cute rom com.

    • TeamAwesome says:

I loved Selfie! I came for Karen and stayed for John. Really wish Hulu etc. had picked it up.

    • paranormalgirl says:

I mourn “Selfie” all the time. I think the name of the show killed it. But John Cho was great and had so much chemistry with Karen Gillan.

    • KiddVicious says:

I loved Selfie too. He was perfect for it.

The first show I saw him in was Charmed. And I didn’t know if it was his character or him, but I was hooked. He’s a great actor and seems like such a nice guy.

    • Trixie says:

      I LOVED him in Selfie!

  4. mila says:

and this is how you talk about all white Hollyweird. take note Jess from Grey’s.

    • nica says:

Jesse Williams doesn’t need to take note. He did a fantastic job all on his own.

Would love to see John Cho in more movies!

    • Lurker says:

I feel like both John Cho, and Jesse Williams have been honest and authentic to their own experiences, so I wouldn’t compare them. That’s a little unfair.

  5. Locke Lamora says:

I’m a huge, huge Star Trek fan, and honestly, making Sulu gay was a mistake.

Having said that, John Cho is awesome. He’s a great actor, and comes across as really smart here. Honk for him!

Also, he’s the only Star Trek dude I find attractive.

    • Esmom says:

I’m not a Trekkie but I can see why he had the concerns he did.

I’m not very familiar with him but honks from me, too, based on this interview. I cannot believe he’s 44 either, he seems so youthful. And I’m with you on not finding his castmates attractive.

      Those posters are awesome!

    • Lurker says:

      Honk for John Cho!!

Personally, I never minded that they wanted to make Sulu gay – the character didn’t ever really seem to express an interest in the opposite sex, or same sex, or any sex at all. Way I see it, now Sulu has a husband. Maybe he’s gay, maybe he’s bi, maybe he was gay all along, maybe he wasn’t, maybe his sexuality isn’t the most important characteristic at all, let’s get on with the movie. You know what I mean? It became a bigger story than it should have been.

    • Rachel says:

As a huge Star Trek fan, also, I John Cho (Anton Yelchin – who is already greatly missed) MAKES the new movies for me. I LIVE for that moment when he pulls out his katana and kicks ass in the first movie. And then when he assumes the captain’s chair in Into Darkness. After those scenes, I can walk away happy.

    • Casi says:

I’m there for Karl Urban. Ir’s nice that we won’t have to fight about it 🙂

  6. Tash says:

    Honk, honk!
    He’s 44!?!? I would give him 34. He’s very handsome, articulate, thoughtful…swoon!

    • detritus says:

Pretty much the exact same reaction.
      Honking for more Cho!

    • yolo112 says:

Seriously. I get all googly eyed when I see him. I love his smile.

44…smh… lookin mighty fiiiine Mr. Cho..*winkwink*

  7. Naya says:

    Firstly, honk!

Secondly, that John Cho hashtag reminded me of Dumbfoundeads song SAFE about Hollywood erasure of Asian men. Sorry on mobile but heres a link anyway.

(NSFW because of a couple of f bombs but worth viewing even on silent for the glorious video sticking it to Hollywood.)

  8. Alex says:

I love John Cho as well and I liked the way he spoke on the Sulu controversy (take notes Quinto). Also more movies with Cho please!

  9. QQ says:

    *HOOOOONNNKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKSSSSSSS* *BREAKS THE GODDAMNED HORN*

    He is delicious!

  10. Adrien says:

John Cho has been playing that one Asian high school student for 2 decades now. It is not his fault. It is not like he has other choices. Now that he is no longer believable playing a kid, the baton has been passed on to 35-year-old Justin Chon. I am glad that John is one of the leads in a successful franchise. So stick around playing barely legal roles, Justin. You’ll get your Hollywood big break too in a decade.

  11. Jen says:

    HONK HONK HONK

  12. Snowflake says:

Great actor! Love him. Had no idea he’s 44.

  13. Melody says:

HONKING LIKE MORNING TRAFFIC AND I’M LATE TO A MEETING!!!

  14. Margo S. says:

I agree! I’m sick of seeing white guys and gals all day every day. We are in a multi cultural world. I love John cho! Seeing him in all those movies would be incredible! Soon enough it will happen. Sorry white actors. Competition is coming!

  15. Josie says:

He’s great. I was sorry the sitcom he made with Karen Gillian didn’t hold on long enough — it was better than the reviews suggested.

I think the rebooted Star Trek is fine (they feel like better _movies_ than most of the TNG movies, really) but it’s too bad that Ghostbusters opened smaller, because Star Trek feels much more “eh” to me.

  16. eto says:

HONK! Loved him since Harold and Kumar!

  17. I Choose Me says:

I’m feeling ALL A DEM POSTERS. HONKING right along with you all for John Cho.

  18. Lucy says:

    He’s 44!!!! What!! Even!!

  19. Mira says:

He’s really handsome, i can’t believe hes 44 he looks 15 years younger.

  20. Jana says:

No one has mentioned the Harold and Kumar franchise. Both John Cho and Kal Penn are brilliant comedic actors!!! I can’t wait until the 4th movie is released!

  21. Madpoe says:

Honk? Imma lean on the horn for sometime!
I’d watch John in just about anything and I totally had no idea the man is 44!!

  22. Faithmobile says:

*swoons and falls on the horn*

  23. Jenn4037 says:

HONK!!! I adore John Cho. Sexy sexy man. I actually watched that #Selfie trainwreck because he was the lead.

  24. Birdix says:

Honk! Honk! Honk! He was so much better than Fiennes in Flash Forward. And so handsome…

  25. nicegirl says:

    HONK HONK

    4ever dong, John Cho.

  26. Angel says:

  27. Izzy says:

    HONK. I love John Cho!

  28. serena says:

    HONK!!! He’s so hot!

  29. mary s says:

Honk! I first saw him in the Harold and Kumar movies. I hope he gets leads in major films, because he deserves it. He a great actor.

  30. j says:

yikes $50 to $60 million isn’t great. the other two had opening weekends in the $70 million range. if it doesn’t hold past opening weekend, it’s going to bomb

  31. Steph B says:

This dude right here is a phenomenal actor. He is talented and he is hot. He should be in all the movies because he is good and compelling. I need to start a #BlackGirlsForCho campaign.
