Eddie Redmayne drops wands, new trailer for Fantastic Beasts at Comic-Con

Much to the chagrin of my friends, I don’t attend the big panels at SDCC. I used to, but that was back when you could still line up for the largest conference room, Hall H, twenty minutes before the panel and get decent seats. I think the last thing I saw in Hall H was the Van Helsing panel, to give you a timeframe. However I spent time kicking myself and wishing I had put in the effort after I read about Eddie Redmayne being adorable at the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them panel.

The Saturday panel, hosted by Conan O’Brien, consisted of Eddie, Colin Farrell, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller and Director David Yates. Eddie and Conan did a little rehearsed bit in which Eddie passed out wands to the audience in an effort to get more light in the hall. With the help of hundreds of WB employees, every person in attendance received one *kicks self again*. Following, Eddie got the crowd to chant “Luminous Maxima” to light the room and then took a selfie with his 7,000 new friends.

To promote Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, star Eddie Redmayne walked through the massive Hall H and handed out wands to a crowd of thousands during San Diego Comic-Con.

The panel itself, including Colin Farrell and director David Yates, remained tight-lipped about movie details. “There’s going to be a hole that opens up and he’ll drop in,” Farrell said of co-star Dan Fogler when the latter almost gave away even the most minor of clues.

But they all shared their enthusiasm for being able to join the world of Harry Potter. “It’s like getting your Hogwarts letter way late in the game,” said Ezra Miller.

You can see footage of the panel here. Not only is Eddie adorable but Colin is funny (and so hot) and Dan gets flustered after he says too much. Ezra had a busy day Saturday as he had to turn around and return to Hall H almost immediately for his Justice League panel. I have really mixed feelings about Ezra as a person but he is a great actor, in my opinion. I look forward to him in both these movies.

I took for granted that the fantastic beast in the title referred to Colin but apparently they actually have proper beasts in the movie. The cast showed a new trailer (posted below) and in it are a glimpse of some of the amazing creatures that will be in the film. A few outlets have noted how this trailer seems more politically pointed than the prior ones. Given J.K. Rowling’s outspoken stance on the current political situations in both the US and the UK, it begs the question of how personal this story is to her? Fantastic Beasts hits theater November 18th, ten days after the US election. Timely.

I can’t believe us muggles are getting a play and a new movie this year! #blessed

Redmayne seems so charming. Very happy that he’s joining this world.

I am very excited. So glad JK can’t quite let go of Harry.

He, and Colin yum yum, look so good in this.
I would have died to be there and get a wand. I know it’s cheesy, but how cute to be part of the universe like that?

I adore the new poster and the cast, but the trailer is still not that intriguing. I’d like to see more of the girls’, Colin’s and Ezra’s characters and less of the humor and the muggle sidekick.

I am a bit disappointed too! I mean, I always find Eddie Redmayne overrated with the bashful Bambi act.

So excited for this. I love Eddie and he was completely charming during the panel. Great guy to lead the new trilogy.

Very excited to see this in Novmeber and to see Eddie and JKR when they come to NYC for the premiere and early screening.

I’m looking forward to also seeing more of Ezra Miller this seems to be his year to break out

I think we can all agree that Harry Potter is the greatest series of all time, right? I’ll fight people on this.
    I’m ridiculously excited.

  6. Trixie says:

Is it bad that I still harbor a lot of ill will toward the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them book that came out in 2001? I remember being 11 and wanting book 5 so badly and being pissed that we got this book instead. I still hate this book. And I’m not looking forward to the movie because I still hate this book.

Hedwig’s song had me in tears. i wish i could read all the books for the first time again.
    and again.
    And again.
I can’t wait to watch this film.

I know I have said my comments about Eddie Redmayne were very “opinionated” but I did always like him. I think he is a very thoughtful, charming and endearing man and his wife and child are very lucky to have him in their lives. I wish Eddie Redmayne and his family all the best.

I really want to see this!
Hecate, let me get this straight… You were breathing the same air as Coan, Eddie and Colin and didn’t even attempt to attend the panel. How blasé of you!

  10. Anahit says:

So, is this the big screen version of Pokemon Go? ’cause that’s what I’m getting from the trailer. Gotta catch ’em all..

Just kidding. Looks better than expected.

  14. Betti says:

I cannot wait for this, the trailer is awesome. It still has magic. The cast is so great and I can’t wait to see Colin and his wand waving skills 😉 hahaha

Am really not feeling bendy as Dr Strange, seems to much like its Sherlock gone mystical.

  15. TreadStyle says:

Absolutely can’t wait! I’m glad JK is giving a whole new era of HP!

  16. Snotface says:

Love Eddie and I’m so glad he’s in this movie! I think he’s perfect for it.

About 10 years ago I met Colin F. In NYC and he called me ‘darling’ and when he did I let out a horrible shrieking grunt sort of noise. I was so embarrassed but he chuckled so I guess it was worth it.

He was gorgeous and his accent was great.

  17. T.Fanty says:

Colin Farrell can be fantastically beastly to me any time he wants. With his magic wand. That is all.
