Kim Kardashian & Kanye West cover Harper’s Bazaar’s September issue

kimye3

Ah, it’s that time of year when we get to see the September Issue covers. It seems like they start coming in earlier and earlier. Harper’s Bazaar devoted their September issue to Kim Kardashian and Kanye West. The photoshoot is decent – there are a few random shots, but I love the close-up of Kim and Kanye’s faces. You can see the full editorial and interview here. Surprisingly, I enjoyed the interview. Kanye often comes across as eccentric and mercurial (if not flat-out crazy) in interviews, but doing a joint interview with Kim grounds him. And while neither of them is going to win a genius grant any time soon, I enjoyed this piece and I think people often miss the fact that Kanye has a very dark, sardonic sense of humor. Some highlights:

Kim and Kanye on each other’s favorite body parts:
KW: Is the face a body part? My favorite body part of Kim’s: heart.
KKW: Awww, now I have to say the same. But of my own, I like my upper stomach. I just seem to always have abs. When I’m not really pregnant, I have a great two-pack. And of Kanye’s? I have to say his heart. And I’ve always loved his legs.

Favorite Taylor Swift song?

KW: For me? I don’t have one.
KKW: I was such a fan of hers.

Historical figure you identify with?
KKW: This one is hard.
KW: Us? Muhammad Ali, Marilyn Monroe—all day. Next question.

Favorite selfie pose?
KKW: I love a selfie in the mirror.
KW: I love her nude selfies. Like, I love the ones from the side, the back ones, and the front. I just love seeing her naked; I love nudity. And I love beautiful shapes. I feel like it’s almost a Renaissance thing, a painting, a modern version of a painting. I think it’s important for Kim to have her figure. To not show it would be like Adele not singing.

Who’s more vain?
KKW: I mean, me.
KW: Yeah, I think she has vanity. And with me, I don’t give a f–k, bro; it is what it is. I’m the best—now what? I don’t know if that’s a vain statement. I don’t particularly like photos of myself, though.

What makes you both laugh?
KKW: Kanye just says the funniest analogies that are so random. I should start keeping a book—in 20 years, I’ll have a big book of analogies. They always make me laugh.
KW: Kim’s just a funny person in general.
KKW: But I don’t get credit for being funny; it’s, like, not a thing.
KW: I think my sense of humor is really dark and super twisted and stuff like that. It’s like, “Is this a funny joke for real? Or am I just rich?” See? That was funny.

How would you like to be remembered?
KKW: I’d like to be remembered as someone who was smart in business, works hard, and can be sexy and a mom. A powerful but still sexy, nonconforming woman. And I would hope that Kanye would be remembered for being smart and sticking to what he believes.
KW: Determined. I would say my determination is way higher than my smartness.
KKW: A lot of people have strong beliefs, but they don’t have the confidence to really stick to them. I really respect Kanye for that.

Kanye isn’t an overthinker: “The one thing I don’t have an insecurity about is public perception. I’m not going to conform to it, you know? Here’s something that’s contrary to popular belief: I actually don’t like thinking. I think people think I like to think a lot. And I don’t. I do not like to think at all…. I think about things to put them in a place where I don’t have to think about them anymore. Say if I had a child with a really bad mom, I would have to think more than if I had a child with a good mom. I’m just doing my homework early. I told my trainer today, I’m a mix of a 14-year-old high schooler and a 60-year-old guy. It can never fall into the 30s or the 40s. It has to be 100 percent 60 or 100 percent 14, no in between.”

[From Harper’s Bazaar]

I do think this is funny: “Is this a funny joke for real? Or am I just rich?” Kanye and Kim also openly talk about his debt and how it felt good for him to talk about it openly, but it sounds like he doesn’t have debt issues anymore, probably because his collaboration with Adidas is going really well. What else? I don’t know, I just think they’re funny and they complement each other really well. There were several really sweet moments between them, like Kim saying that she lies to people all the time about how much Kanye loves to sleep, because he’s like a cat, apparently, and he falls asleep anywhere and everywhere. Ha! Anyway, start the flame war. I like Kimye.

  1. K.C. says:

The only question from this excerpt that made them seem semi likable was the “How would you like to be remembered?” question.

The nicest thing I can say about them is that they’re clearly well-matched and seem to be happy together. Good for them.

    • Farrahh says:

Yeah, honestly I have never heard two people more perfect for each other. I absolutely would not be surprised if they stay married forever, and that’s saying something in Hollywood.

  2. UCatwoman says:

How’d they fit two such overinflated egos on the same cover?

  3. Tris says:

I don’t think anybody thinks Kanye “thinks too much”. He should have thought about that before barfing it out of his face hole.

  4. LannisterForever says:

They are honestly perfect for each other. I think they will be together forever.

    • Megan says:

They really do seem well matched.

    • Shambles says:

Agree. As a poster downthread said, they are vapid and self-involved. But they know it. I actually like that picture of the two of them on their phones. They’re poking fun at their own image and they’re in on the joke. They know how vain and superficial they are and they own it. I’ll throw myself into the fire. I like them too.

      • HH says:

I’m in the fire with you. I’m bringing s’mores. 🙂

      • Little Darling says:

Although I’m not a big Kanye fan, he seems to genuinely love his wife. I’m rooting for those two crazy kids.

    • Alex says:

Not a Kimye fan but I’ve always thought they were well suited. They just work

    • Eleonor says:

I don’t like neither of them, but they make sense together.

    • Katie says:

Yep. Dumb and dumber. Perfect march!

  5. jeanpierre says:

Good interview. I’ve been missing Kanye West.
I want to hear Kim jokes now.

  6. Merritt says:

I’ll be throwing that issue into the recycling bin the second it arrives.

  7. Belb says:

Wow, marrying him really saved this family.

  8. Brunswickstoval says:

So she’s asked which body part she likes most about him and goes on to talk about her own. At great length. And then several times how she wants to be remembered as sexy.

He’s surprising in interviews and can be entertaining. She’s exhausting.

    • jeanpierre says:

To be fair, the complete question was which body part of themselves do they prefer, and with body part of the other. (Sorry about the poor grammar)

  9. sherry says:

I like them. There. I said it.

    • Chaucer says:

I love them together. I really do. I agree with Kim when she says Kanye has great analogies. He really does and I think he says a ton of important things that often get missed in his word vomit. #kimyeforever

      • jeanpierre says:

True! I would buy that book of hers right away.

      • sherry says:

I agree. I think Kanye and Kim make a beautiful couple and are perfect for one another. I really like Kanye and respect his creativity (have you ever looked up everything he’s done on Wikipedia – he’s been going for his dream since he was very young) . I also believe Kim is a really hard worker.

I’ve said this before, but I saw Kim giving an interview years ago where she related a story of how her father told her to figure out what she loved and then figure out how to make money from it. Kim said she wanted to be rich and famous and she figured out a way to make money from that.

People can trash her and trash her family all they want, but Kim is the one driving $500K cars, living in a $20 mansion and flying around the world in a private jet.

      • paranormalgirl says:

“Kim is the one driving $500K cars, living in a $20 mansion and flying around the world in a private jet.”

That’s wonderful…. if those things matter to you.

      • Tate says:

        Exactly paranormalgirl.

      • sherry says:

I’m just saying she knew what she wanted and she’s worked her tail off to get it. Not digging ditches or anything like that, but she has put in the work to reach her goals (which for her, meant $500K cars, mansions and private jets).

She was not an heiress. Those things did not just fall into her lap.

      • Brittaki says:

@Sherry Kim came from a very wealthy family who rubbed shoulders with the rich and famous from the time she was born. Her mother pimped out her ex-husband and her new husband’s names to get them a TV show, and then continued to pimp the show until they could squeeze every last cent from everyone and everything they could. So really, Kim’s fame and wealth is the entirely the doing of her mother, so actually it did all fall in her lap.

      • Katie says:

“… Kim said she wanted to be rich and famous and she figured out a way to make money from that…”
At the expense of her dignity and any respect anyone may have ever had for her.

    • MaybeLater says:

They do seem likable and semi-normal here. “KW: Us? Muhammad Ali, Marilyn Monroe—all day. Next question.” Kanye being Kanye!!

  10. Tate says:

    Yuck. Vapid idiots.

  11. paolanqar says:

I think Kim will be remembered for her surgery, for being so shallow and self-absorbed, for her annoying baby voice and for doing anything her mother commands.
Kanye will be remembered as a grumpy, batshit crazy, erratic lunatic.

  12. Tiffany27 says:

    What did I just read?

    • FingerBinger says:

The complete idiot’s guide to vapidity.

    • yolo112 says:

..a bunch of empty words.. no substance, just self absorbed garbage.. His joke, btw, not funny. Or am I just rich? I rolled my eyes so hard, I hurt myself.

    • mila says:

the worst thing i read the whole thing on HB this morning. so shallow, she is missing brain cells. he used to be interesting. now, he is such a cliche…

also, still not buying this is anything but a fake marriage.

      • Matchday says:

A fake marriage with two children? Did the children come from the Hollywood Child Patch?

  13. Jade says:

Omg they are so vapid and self involved. All the things happening in the world and here they are talking about great they are. I am so sick of these two idiots. Kanye used to be amazing and now he is so out of touch with the real world.

    • cherrypie says:

To be fair to them…they appeared to be answering questions that were asked of them. I dont get the hate for these two. I actually like them together. Oh dear what am I saying? More like they are well suited for each other.

    • MaybeLater says:

They’re being asked questions about themselves so yeah they’re going to seem self-involved when answering them. Duh.

  14. Aiobhan says:

Best line from the snippet: “I’m a mix of a 14-year-old high schooler and a 60-year-old guy. It can never fall into the 30s or the 40s. It has to be 100 percent 60 or 100 percent 14, no in between.”

I like that he is self-aware enough to say that.

I don’t care for Kim or anyone in the Koven, but Kanye, when he is not being a mess is entertaining. I still may need to cancel my Harper’s subscription, though.

  15. Freddy Spaghetti says:

Kanye, the self-described underthinker. Kim, who googles vain to make sure she’s describing herself accurately. Ugh.

  16. littlemissnaughty says:

I have to confess, I totally ordered season 9 of KUWTK on Amazon and I’m obsessed. Yes, I fell into the trap. It’s clearly somewhat scripted although I think less so than in the first few seasons. Probably because real life turned out to be more interesting. I have a new perspective. These two clearly love each other and seem like a happy couple. They also should’ve taken Kylie off the show when she still had a chance, she didn’t seem suited to this lifestyle. And now she has the lips. I blame Lucifer for being too preoccupied to raise her youngest. Caitlyn Jenner (Caitlyn was still Bruce back then) is such an unlikeable person. Goddamn. And I wish Kanye were on the show more. It would be epic.

Sue me, I’m contributing to their success now.

Also, Kanye doesn’t conform, I’ll give him that but Kim? Oh honey, please.

  17. Gatita says:

The selfies photo is pretty brilliant.

  18. Lucy says:

Lord help me, I like them too.

  19. Miss V says:

I will never say that I like them, because I do not. However, this is the most likable I have found them to be, like, ever.

  20. Donna Martin says:

I find her vapid and I hope she does truly care for him. I do think he has some serious issues. I love them together though

  21. Nev says:

    Love it.

  22. QQ says:

They are self involved but I keep coming back to someone saying they are actually good astrological match and that their union by reason of that is very Kismet if you would, and then Last week I think Lainey said that in Chinese she is almost an ideal match for him as well so Who even know, they seem to be equally ridiculous, equally vain, equally calculating ( well. her more so) but the point is these two can last (until Kanye wants to divorce her)

    • me says:

Or she loses the one thing he loves about her, her figure ! But she has docs to help her with that so…

  23. Pants says:

I think the one thing that I can actually appreciate about them is that they each make the other more likeable. Kim knows how to tone Kanye down when he’s, y’know, being Kanye. And I think he brings out a side of her that shows that she cares about someone besides herself. I still don’t care much for either of them, but I can appreciate those things.

  24. Margo S. says:

I’m actually really starting to like them more and more as a couple. Kim has really showed me that if a woman of any size wants to walk around in any outfit that they are comfortable in, good for them. She’s shown me not to judge woman because more then anything we need to support each other. You do you. Also love that shes a hot mom! I’m a mom of 2 with another on the way and knowing that after kids you can still look and feel sexy is everything!

    • Caela says:

I agree! I have an hourglass and people always told me what I could and couldn’t wear, and I like that she wears what she (or Kanye..!) wants. Plus although she’s a mum and it’s important to her, she doesn’t let it define her or consume her whole image which so many celeb mums do. I remember when they first got together I thought it was so random but reading this interview makes me understand it more.

  25. amilu says:

    Historical figure you identify with?
KW: Us? Muhammad Ali, Marilyn Monroe—all day. Next question.

    STFU, you two.

    • Matchday says:

Ali was a controversial and outrageous character known for his outbursts and off the cuff remarks. Marilyn was universally thought of as a dumb blonde but was a very intelligent woman who worked a manufactured persona to fame and fortune.

  26. lucy says:

Another fashion mag that is now dead to me.

Too bad, because Bazaar was the last one standing.

  27. Hollz says:

I’ve liked them together since day one. This just confirms to me they are a perfect match. I get the same feeling from Tiddles as I did about these two in the early stages of their relationship – so I think Tiddles is here to stay!

    • K.C. says:

Agreed on both couples. It’s rare to see two people who are such a natural fit. It’s funny, because for both Kimye and Tiddles, they are well-matched in both their good qualities and their bad ones. Maybe that’s the secret?

      • Matchday says:

It helps when a relationship isn’t a PR stunt. Come back in 4 years when TayTo are married with two children, then you can compare.

I give Kanye and Kim at least another 10 years. I give TayTo another 10 weeks.

  28. jlee says:

Back when he stormed the stage at the VMA’s, at first I thought maybe he’s kidding and felt mildly entertained. Once it was proven a serious, spur of the moment thing, I just loved him. Not for “taking Taylor’s moment” but because he cared that much about something so ridiculous. He is a ridiculous riot of a human being. People need to realize that and enjoy the absurdity.

    • MaybeLater says:

jlee, Imma going let you finish but…. Yeah, I kinda fell in love with his craziness then too.

    • Guesto says:

@jlee – “He is a ridiculous riot of a human being. People need to realize that and enjoy the absurdity.”

I really enjoyed that about him too, but then he hitched his wagon to the grotesque that is that loathsome family, and my casual affection for him and his intense but well-meaning crazy died a rapid death.

  29. Guesto says:

The vapid, self-absorbed venality of them offends me in every possible way.

  30. Impmom says:

So many salty people! Go Kimye! Y’all are adorable and aren’t hurting anyone ❤

  31. me says:

Ok Kanye except Adele’s voice was God given, Kim’s figure was NOT.

  32. heli says:

Shheeesh, you all need to get out more!!

  33. Oxy says:

I’ve always liked Kimye – they seem so well matched.

I enjoy them for what they are so their antics are neither here nor there for me.

  34. Casi says:

They are suited to and deserve each other. None of us deserve them. Except maybe Kanye’s music. We definitely don’t deserve his fashion.

  35. mila says:

just remembered something interesting. this pics are by Karl Lagerfeld. He loves Kim and Kanye. But he is the guy who said that Adele is fat. so, is it money or connections? darn you Karl!

  36. Ana says:

He’s an idiot but at the same time he’s more talented than Taylor, Loki, Calvin and Katy Perry put together.

  37. Kri says:

As well matched and deep as my dessert plates.

  38. ElleBee says:

I really like the first picture

  39. me says:

Kim said in this interview she’d like to have more privacy…ha ha that’s the funniest thing she’s ever said !

  40. crictorrun says:

‘My determination is way higher than my smartness’. Golden.

  41. Pass says:

The Kardashian-West apologetics is probably the only thing I don’t like about this website. I don’t see the appeal. They are so boring and vapid. As always, their charm eludes me.

  42. Ashley says:

this was my fave part hahahaha:
KKW: I rented an island for his birthday. A far, far away place where no one can find us.
KW: You see, those are the type of statements that make people not like us, more so than the “I’m the best” statement. It’s more the “Oh, yeah, I just rented an island for his birthday …” You know in Meet the Parents, Owen Wilson’s character? All of our shit is like Owen Wilson’s character; he’s like, “This is when we jumped off Mount Everest, and we wore turtle flight suits or whatever.”

    • Matchday says:

Kanye is more self-aware than I had previously thought. That he’s quoting Meet the Parents and making that reference makes me like his crazy a** more.

  43. Sunnydaze says:

I’m so confused by all the comments saying how much love they have for these two. A post on Kim? Open season. A post on Kanye? People can’t wait to trash him. A post of the two of then and suddenly there’s love?

No! I’m sorry, but no. They’re both disgusting exploitative human beings who only care for themselves, have more money than god and found a way to snow everyone in the process. Why are we celebrating this? Should we celebrate Hitler and Eva braun for being so perfect for each other? Stop drinking the Kool aid for godsake!

    • Margo S. says:

Did you seriously just compare them to Hitler. ..? Wow. You have issues dude.

    • Matchday says:

“Should we celebrate Hitler and Eva braun.”

I’m going to say you’re NOT a student of history but ARE a Swifter.

And no Swifter should chide another about drinking the kool-aid.

    • Artsygirl says:

I agree with you..why all of a sudden when they are together, this website loves them and find them cute and perfect for each other..and why is it that if you are anti-kardashian, you become a Taylor swift fan instantly..why the assumption? I don’t like this couple and I also don’t like Taylor swift.

Sorry but wether they are together or covered individually, I still find them offensive.

  44. Bex says:

We all know that Kanye is just killing time with this chick until Beyonce finally splits from Jay-Z and he no longer has to restrict his love for her to weirdly uncomfortable outbursts, onstage, at various music award nights.

  45. sequinedheart says:

They have a sense of humor about themselves and they really do seem to be a ‘forever’ match. I never used to pay their interviews/public persona much attention but I won’t lie, busting out to Kanye in my car when my toddler & husband are not with me (like an hour vacation to target), it makes me feel good. hahahahaha it’s ok- I know how dorky I am.
