Kendall Jenner covers the September issue of Vogue US: boring or great?

0916-VO-COVR01-01_noupc

No surprise, Kendall Jenner is the cover girl for the September issue of Vogue (US). We knew this a few months back, when we heard that Kendall had gotten a new lob for the photoshoot. Kendall has had Vogue editorials before, and Anna Wintour has definitely given the Kardashian-Jenners her seal of approval, but this is a really big deal: Kendall Jenner, one of the most well-known of the Insta-models/nepotism models is on the cover of the biggest Vogue issue of the year. And I can’t say that I’m really impressed with the results? The cover is one of the more compelling images, but she still just looks like a kid dressed up like a fancy toreador. You can see the full editorial and cover story here, and the issue is on newsstands August 23rd. Some highlights:

Kendall learned from watching her sisters: “Obviously, my success came after my sisters’— I got to see all of their mistakes and watch out for them.”

She’s a tomboy: “We had ATVs and go-carts, and I grew up riding them all the time, which is why I’m a good driver. It’s super-ironic to think about now, but it’s something I can thank my dad for: how much of a tomboy I was. That’s why I think the whole thing— her transition— was really hard for me, because I was like ‘But you taught me everything tomboy!’” It has gotten easier. “I knew it was going to have its rough phase,” she says. “But it’s all supernormal now. It’s not weird at all. Sometimes I look at a picture of my dad when she was a guy, and it makes me a little sad— I get emotional. You have to get past it— you’ve got a new person to love. It’s kind of a blessing in disguise— if that’s not the wrong way to say it,” she says, and then laughs at her choice of words.

When she hears ‘Kardashian’ used as a pejorative: “Oh my God, I totally get what you’re saying. People say a lot of what they think, and it’s not always positive. And we never say anything. We just take it. And then when people meet us, they’re pleasantly surprised. Because we aren’t what people think. One of the best lessons I ever learned from my sisters is not to take everything so seriously. Just leave it alone— it will pass in a week. That’s how I grew up. My sisters are so f–king strong, and they taught me and my little sister to just toughen up and not let it affect us. You know what’s real.”

Being non-judgmental about Caitlyn: “We’re very accepting of people and being different and being who you are. We’re not judgemental. But obviously it’s strange to having your dad, who was so male, completely reverse. It is definitely a gnarly experience. But my whole life we would, like, catch her, and we would be like, What is going on here? I think we know, but do we? At one point, Kylie and I thought he was cheating on my mom, because he had makeup and nail polish. One time we found those squishy boob things. We found wigs. And then one time I actually ran into her. In this house. She had no idea. She would wake up really early just so she could dress up and move around the house and get that little kick for the morning, and then go back to being Bruce— take us to school, totally normal. So one morning I woke up at 4:00 A.M. so thirsty, came downstairs into the kitchen, and grabbed a bottle of water. And as I was coming back out, my dad was coming down the stairs in, like, a wig and makeup and shoes—the full nine. And she didn’t see me. I literally froze. Please don’t turn left. Because she could either turn left or right. Thank God she turned right and— to this day!— has no idea that happened. That was the first time I had ever seen her…My mom knew. She knew since their third date.”

Vogue’s Jonathan Van Meter notes that the last part about Caitlyn came seemingly out of nowhere, that Kendall just volunteered it. I tend to think Cait’s transition is something both Jenner girls are still trying to understand, and to their credit, both Kylie and Kendall have come into the process with open minds. But I also think that all of the daughters feel like Caitlyn disrespected their mom, and that’s caused a lot of internal drama within the family.

Also: how is wet hair and a center part high-fashion now?

    Yuck.

  2. JFresh says:

Always boring. She can’t be anything but boring. Doesn’t realize how she is being used, does she?

    • Taiss says:

I’m so tired of the kadarshians/jenners, I mean they all get asked the same questions, we hear the same answers over and over again….

  3. Shelly says:

    Boring especially for September!

    • shelly says:

I concur with the other Shelly

    • annaloo. says:

I almost think that Kendall Jenner on the September cover is perfect. It’s perfect because fashion IS boring now, Vogue needs to be taken from Anna WIntour’s hands bc all she does is surround herself with the same group of sycophantic, socialite and celebrity spawn women every year, and WHO IS DOING ANYTHING EXCITING?

I would give anything for a Cher on the Red Carpet again.
I would give anything to have our supermodels like Naomi, Christy, Claudia and Linda
I would give anything to see something spellbinding and shocking and fun like Gautier or
      Azzedine Alaia or Christian LaCroix

      EVERYONE LOOKS THE SAME
BOY BAND MEMBERS ARE NOT EDGY
REALITY TV STAR IS NOT THE SAME AS BEING DISCOVERED BY A SCOUT
      CHANEL IS FRICKIN UGLY NOW
Our world is run by likes and comments. It’s so boring, just like this cover model Kendall

I hope fashion is just having a slow moment like music was with Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer right before grunge came around and kicked everyone’s ass.

    • Deedee says:

      You’re so right.

      • Snappyfish says:

Brava, well said. I miss The Trinity & Claudia. When models, not actresses or reality star relatives covered W & Vogue & Bazaar. I actually don’t make be Kendall. She IS the best of that group (Kartrashian Klan) but still that isn’t saying much

    • susiecue says:

I like the cover, but the editorial photos blow

  4. KB says:

I don’t get it with her. I don’t see anything but “bored teenager”

  5. Mia V. says:

The pact Kris made with the Devil really worked.

    • JFresh says:

      Seems like it, right???

    • JenniferJustice says:

I find it disturbing that Kris new since their third date but married him anyway and then had children with him. I think that’s horrible even if it’s what Bruce wanted at the time – obviously he was fighting his sexual identity. Why would someone knowingly create that family dynamic? And here’s Kendall telling the truth about her knowing after Kris has denied knowing in the early years. I feel like she totally used him for fame and relevancy at the expense of Caitlin’s emotional well-being and her younger daughters. She is seriously a horrible person. I couldn’t care less if she’s friendly to talk to. That does not equate to being a normal or nice person.

      • perplexed says:

” I feel like she totally used him for fame and relevancy at the expense of Caitlin’s emotional well-being and her younger daughters”

I think it’s possible she used him/Bruce for fame since this is Kris Jenner we’re talking about, but didn’t he/Bruce kind of use her back too? He/Bruce didn’t have to marry her and I doubt she stuck a gun to his head to do so. I feel Caitlyn has to take responsibility for what her emotional well-being was like back then as well. Why did he/Bruce go into the marriage after already being married twice and already having four kids? It wasn’t like he/Bruce was a naive unmarried 18 year old when he/Bruce married Kris. I don’t understand why he/Bruce knowingly created that dynamic as well. I guess I think both Kris and Caitlyn were dysfunctional as parents — I don’t think Kris bears that responsibility alone.

      • hk says:

Things aren’t so black and white. She could have thought it was just a fetish… not that he literally was a woman in a man’s body! He might not have even known back then!

      • MorningCoffee says:

Jennifer, that’s the thing that jumped out at me too! Didn’t Kris try to say she was “blindsided” and had no idea? I swear I read that. It was one of the things from Caitlyn’s Vanity Fair interview where she said that Kris shouldn’t be surprised and basically said she was lying. Now, Kendall pretty much confirms it.

      • We Are All Made Of Stars says:

I agree with hk. If for a moment we can set aside that KJ is selfish and narcissistic, we can consider that some men just enjoy cross dressing and perhaps Kris just took it in this way. It actually makes her seem like a wonderful person if this is really what happened.

      • Jwoolman says:

Kris knew Bruce wanted to transition before they married. He was taking hormones for it when they met and the effects were obvious. She could have talked with his two exes. But she needed a rich man fast, since she blew it with her last rich man by getting caught having affairs, and Bruce still had money and the potential for making a lot more. Having the Jenner kids was just the glue she always used to keep a rich man. She had four with Robert Kardashian because it took that long to produce a boy. Probably Bruce was fine with two daughters so there was no pressure to keep trying for a boy.

So now we know that Kris has definitely been lying about not knowing anything, and Cait has definitely been telling the truth in interviews all along. I don’t think Cait did anything wrong by Kris, just was telling some uncomfortable truths, and the kids had no business thinking she was wronging their mother by anything she said about Kris (much of which was corroborated by the tv show).

      • Deedee says:

Kris may have thought he was a transvestite and not realize he was transgender.

  6. HH says:

The photo of her in the red with wet hair is somewhat interesting.

This interview isn’t awful, though. Also, that last part about Kris Jenner “knowing”… Wasn’t there some big hoopla about Kris saying she didn’t know? And now she’s known since their third date? Maybe it could be taken to assume that he liked to cross-dress, however, if my husband was making that his morning ritual, some conversations would be had.

    • JustVisiting says:

      HH
Yup! Kris tried to redirect the whole thing into a pity party of how she had no clue and felt betrayed.
The pics and interview isn’t awful imo either.

      • Lucu says:

That’s what confused me reading this… I was sure Kris had said she had no idea, and this was all a complete shock? But, if Kendal is right then Kris really was just playing it for a pity party. However, part of me wonders if maybe she was wary to say she knew until she saw how the GP reacted to it all… Either way I think Kris has used the transition of Bruce to Caitlyn to her own advantage, pretty much the same as she uses her kids .

    • We Are All Made Of Stars says:

I actually think her interviews make her seem reasonably intelligent and aware. Her speaking is way better than her modeling.

    • Eleonor says:

I think that photo is far way better than the one on the cover.

  7. Locke Lamora says:

She is such a bad model. She’s skinny and tall, but that’s it. No presence whatsoever.

    • JFresh says:

I think everyone in the industry must know that and she’s being used as a means of keeping fashion relevant/connected to other stuff people have their eyeballs on in the age of social media. It’s a pretty smart move actually on behalf of the magazines and designers. They know things are changing.

      • We Are All Made Of Stars says:

Very true. I agree with Locke Lamora that she has zero presence and that is the nonnegotiable thing that kills her as a real model. But you’re right too. It’s the mass market version of using socialites as “muses” as a way of maintaining relevance with wealthy clients.

      • Adrien says:

Jfresh, Vogue should be the trendsetter and not the one going for the mainstream but I honestly think Kendall deserves to be on the cover. She is popular, attractive and not too edgy. There are way, way worse cover girls in the past including the ones in the 80s and 90s. Vogue USA has always been commercial.

    • RedOnTheHead says:

Locke Lamora, you nailed it. I finally realized what bugs me so much about her being a “model”. Besides the Kardashian/Jenner connection. It’s the fact that as soon as I look away from one of her pictures I literally can’t remember what she looks like. I wouldn’t be able to pick her out of a crowd. She has zero presence.

  8. Wilma says:

Her face just isn’t striking to me, she doesn’t grab my attention.

  9. Suzy from Ontario says:

I gotta say, I find her boring. Maybe it’s because she’s over-exposed through her family, but I just don’t find anything particularly interesting about her face. She has zero energy coming through. No edginess, no brightness, nada. Not a fan.

    • Lirko says:

Have to agree. She’s the (very) pretty girl from next door, nothing more. I feel bad saying it, bc I think she’s really trying, but, alas, still not happening

      • teacakes says:

She’s a perfect example of someone who, if she absolutely must be a model, needs to stay in her lane and stick to doing catalogue work – high fashion is not for her, and she’d have got nowhere without Kanye opening those designer doors.

  10. Cara says:

Lord. She’s a reallllyyyy bad model.

The nepotism in Hollywood is really being showcased by the latest crop of brain-dead spawn being shoved down our collective throats.

  11. Cee says:

So if Kris knew all along, why act to surprised and betrayed and everything else they did? I know they manufacture drama, but still…

I don’t read vogue so I don’t care but if I were really tall and skinny I could be a model just like Kendall. Obviously a bad one, with bad posture.

  12. pikawho? says:

The only thing I like about her face is how her eyebrows are the complete opposite of whats on trend right now. Otherwise? Zzzzzzzz

  13. AlleyCat says:

Is it really a big deal anymore though? Vogue has been going downhill for years. This cover is awful though, she makes the same face in every shoot. Also, she sounds way younger than her years. That story could have been told by my 9 year old niece, and there would be no difference. She’s pretty much over in the fashion world, wonder how much Kris Jenner paid to get her this cover.

    • Sunshine Gold says:

I remember when Vogue was EVERYTHING! To think Anna Wintour is slumming it with reality stars, just desperately clinging to something, anything….!

  14. HeyThere! says:

I actually love the pictures. I know she gets a lot of hate on here for looking basic/boring, but I find her normal in the best way possible. She’s not contouring the crap out of her face, she’s just being herself. I like that quality. Beauty comes in all forms, I find her beautiful. I like her hair, also. It’s too stringy and fine to have it long like she did. This gives her tons of volume!

    • S says:

I agree. I find her really eye-catching and she has a lovely tomboyish look that sets off high-fashion well. Her face is striking, not as strong as Cara D, but loads better than Bella Hadid

    • Denise says:

Real models don’t need contouring anyway, that’s for her sisters. Compare her ‘fresh’ face to Christy Turlington’s or Kate Moss’ makeup free face and wet hair….then you see how the magic is truly gone. And I don’t blame Kendall for being boring and ordinary. I blame Anna Wintour for killing fashion. She stopped directing and began following. She made choices.

  15. Zuzus Girl says:

Girl ( and she does look like a girl, not a woman) has the worst posture. None of the insta models seem to be able to stand up straight.

It has to shake anyone to the core when a parent transitions. That would take a while for any kid to adjust to. the change

    • Jwoolman says:

Kylie has a rabbit named Bruce… Which is kind of funny and sad at the same time. But Cait told them very early that they could keep calling her dad, which I’m sure helped. Still the physical transformation must be difficult for the kids to get used to. Kendall’s comments seemed very honest to me. I wonder if she consciously realized she was proving her mother lied about the chronology of “when the wife knew” ?

  16. Dippit says:

“Vogue” US needs new direction. If this is September, then the team (Wintour) just aren’t cutting it.

    • Mollie says:

20 years ago, a Kardashian-Jenner could have NEVER, EVER been on the cover of Vogue. Time for Anna to retire.

  17. anna2222222 says:

Really, Anna Wintour? This is your cover? I will say that interview is the most interesting Kendall has ever been.

  18. missmerry says:

so i am not a fan of any of these people and while the images in succession are kinda nice b/c they’re all very different (and I think she has a pretty face in some of them, especially the one where her freckles are showing)…I just can’t see past the fact that shes part of that klan and they’re just a waste of space…

it’s like shes on the cover b/c shes expected to be on the cover, because it was going to happen eventually…not because shes that great…

I would die to be a fly on wintours wall and hear her say ‘oversaturate the world with kanye and the kardashians and let the public choose to turn away from them when they’ve had enough, put them on the covers, don’t put too much effort into the pics though, let kanye “design” awful stuff but don’t tell him how bad it is…let this play out bwahahaha’…like she supports them to take them down quicker, rather than help make them more successful (wishful thinking on my part lol)

  19. Lilacflowers says:

They covered half her face with hair!

  20. Freddy Spaghetti says:

I don’t care for the editorial pics, but think she looks amazing on the cover.

  21. Nicole says:

*yawn* really THIS is what they did for the September cover?

  22. Lynnie says:

Those boots lmao. Although I do like the white dress, but those boots 😂😂. The picture is veryyyy pretty tho I like the vibe 😊

Face wise, I get the most pull from the Toreador photos (and I actually like the clothes, but that’s just my inner tackiness coming out), but her eyes are just sooooooooO dead.

I wonder what she’s gonna do when she can’t pull jobs anymore. Will she go back into the Klan and pull a Khloe in terms of annoyingness? Will she go out and jet set? Who knows

  23. felixswan2 says:

Terrible. I still can’t believe she is a top model, and I can’t stand how the Kardashians/Jenners have taken over. When will it end?

  24. OTHER RENEE says:

A great model is someone you can’t take your eyes off of. Kendall is someone you glance at then move on. These pics leave me cold.

  25. LadyWish says:

I don’t think the pics are too awful – though the last one isn’t good at all, the dress is frumpy and the way she’s hunched over doesn’t make either her or the dress look good. The cover image and the one of her with the wet hair are some of the most compelling shots she’s ever taken.
    But.
There’s just no spark at all with her. There’s nothing that really holds your gaze. She just doesn’t have It. She’s improved a lot as a model, I’ll give her that, but at the end of the day, if you don’t have It, there’s only so much you can do.

  26. Talie says:

Actually not as bad as I thought it would be. Editorial still isn’t her strength, but I like it.

  27. lvw2 says:

    YES GAWD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

IDC. I LOVE her as a model.
    reminds me of ali macgraw.

    *shrugs*

  28. YupYepYam says:

Lol. Kim must be seething with jealousy. Hers not a september cover and have to featured big baby ye

  29. coco says:

Nice shoot. I like Kendall (she’s got such a cute face) but yeah, it could’ve been any other model and the cover would’ve looked essentially the same. Although let’s be honest here — there are tons of models who have the same face in every photo (Isabeli Fontana comes to mind) and still have Vogue covers so I don’t think she deserves so much criticism.

  30. Moon says:

Kendall cannot model to save her life. She’s a very pretty girl with a great body, but what is with this try hard stare? Why is she always covering her face with her hands? She always looks so stiff and uncomfortable. Please bring back the Jessica stams and Gemma wards!

  31. Fiorella says:

I don’t mind the wet hair middle part ! Thick hair so it’s looking good on her.

  32. cindy says:

The cover expression and pose look like she is trying (and failing) to look like Gia Carangi.

    • nicole says:

Gia Carangi had that special something, loved the Angelina Jolie movie on her, she was a real wild child, but Kendall is just boring and has no charisma to me, and I love looking at fashion editorials, but she does nothing for the clothes.

  33. CJ Berk says:

So tired of this family of uneducated, narcissistic, boring women. Parading around naked (Kim et al) as if they’re the only ones with female body enhancements. Now Vogue puts a teenage girl on its cover….yes pretty but nothing unusual or classic here. Just a young girl. Anna Wintour has turned Vogue into a fan magazine for little girls who aspire to nothing. Yes I agree…I’d love to see a gorgeous model or actress or political person featured. Enough with this meaningless empty world view.

  34. Alexis says:

    Sad!

  35. serena says:

I mean the photoshoot is cute, but nothing really amazing.. as expected she’s kind of boring. Anyway I liked how she talked about her dad, but Kris knew since their 3° date?? wtf?

  36. Bohemianmartini says:

Proof that Vogue has jumped the shark. Again (see other kartrashian covers). Sign of the times. Everything we see has been bought and paid for.

  37. AntiVogue says:

Generation K. My ass! Does anybody really believe this girl would have any chance in the model industry if antisocial media & nepotism wouldn’t exist?

I get that many average dumb people follow this vain, average looking girl but that a so called high fashion magazine downgraded itself to join and celebrate the ‘I am average at best, but look at my social media numbers!!!!’ generation is worriesome. What kind of impression will this have on our next generation if these utterly incompetent people are THE faces of our generation. We have absolutely no legacy left for them expect your value is only worth something when you have rich parents or a bunch of idiots following you on antisocial media.

  38. Andrea says:

I think the she looks great on this cover.

  39. cindyp says:

The photoshoot is a yawn; she’ s pretty but no pizazz. She seems to have not altered anything yet, unlike Kylie who looks like a wax mannequin. I just don’t understand how Kris Jenner could want that life for her kids; no education, not doing anything that actually helps anyone. It’s all so superficial & narcissistic. Sad.

  40. Craig says:

This could be the cover of the Macy’s insert I get in my Sunday paper…..boring boring boring.

  41. A Fan says:

Pretty, but missing the captivating ‘it’ factor.

[*At least she hasn’t reconstructed her face, tits, and ass like the rest of them.*]

  42. Lisatorner says:

Isn’t the cover of vogue Spain Bella hadid and the cover of vogue uk Gigi hadid or something? She’s going for all the nepotism points this September

  43. Adrien says:

Kendall is a straight person’s idea of a supermodel. She looks too safe. No self respecting gay person would ever say, “Kendall is my fashion queen”. However, I am ok with her Vogue September cover.

  44. Alana says:

I look at old photos of Kendall with so much envy. If I too had parents rich enough to buy me an eyebrow lift, nose job, subtle face fillers and the best makeup team. I would be as pretty. She was such an average looking model a few years ago. It only changed when she had her face tweaked. So many young celebrities these days are getting brow lifts to make their eyelids appear larger. Bell a Hadid, Arians grande, Taylor swift etc. It makes them go from hooded average eyes to beautiful, most people are too stupid to realise it isn’t all natural because they can’t pinpoint what changed. Also had a very subtle nose job as well, looks good.

It annoys me that all the top models today are due to nepotism and $50,000 worth of plastic surgery to their faces.

  45. rudy says:

I like the photos and i like kendall.
The interview is interesting, that was a surprise.

  46. DIrty Martini says:

She is a pretty girl, and she has an amazing model body…….but no supermodel vibe whatsoever, I’m not sure any of the current cast of models does.

As far as being part of the Kardashian / Jenner machine…….girl can’t help who her parents or siblings are and at this point I consider her the last objectionable of them all.

  47. Elizabeth says:

Kendall always looks uncomfortable. She is a beautiful girl, but she seriously lacks charisma.

  48. annaloo. says:

It’s just disappointing. I remember the first time I laid eyes on Naomi Campbell. I couldn’t stop looking at her. I remember the first time I saw Christy Turlington, I kept the magazine. The Revlon “Unforgettable Women” supermodel ad campaign of the 80s? I collected them for all the different models. With the girls and the fashion today do not do this, do not have this effect. I miss this effect, when you see such stunning beauty and style that you just stare. It is not with us right now, and it is a shame.

  49. caitlinK says:

Such a boring, bland face and such a boring, bland girl…
