Blake Lively got bikini-ready for ‘The Shallows’ by eliminating soy & gluten

Despite the fact that Blake Lively thinks it’s “unfair” that new mothers are asked about losing the baby weight, Blake keeps talking about how she lost the baby weight after giving birth to Baby James. Blake is still doing some promotion (internationally) for The Shallows, the Blake-In-A-Bikini Movie. So everyone wants to know how she wore a bikini just eight months after giving birth. She went on a diet, she worked out a lot and she was magically able to do all of it without any nannies. Shocking! Some highlights from various interviews with Blake:

Her nannies: “My parents are pretty much the nannies! They are the best baby nurses you could pray for. They raised five kids so they know what they are doing.”

The joy of motherhood: “It’s tough when you get pooped on and barfed on, but having a baby is wonderful. Even when it’s tough and I’m exhausted I think ‘I am so fortunate.’”

Getting her body back in shape after the baby: “I focused on training and eating well. It took two different trainers and a nutritionist to help me get into that sort of shape because it’s not normal to look like that eight months after having a kid. It’s the name of the game when you are doing a movie in a swimsuit. You know there is going to be that bikini shot. But how cool would it be if there wasn’t.”

Her diet: “What we actually did was no gluten and no soy. It seems like it was really easy to cut out but you realise there is soy in everything… Even if it’s healthy wholefoods or organic stuff there’s always soy in it. But once you remove soy you realise you are eating just like no processed foods. That’s basically what I did. No processed foods and then working out.”

[From The Daily Mail]

When Blake talks about food, she usually annoys me but I kind of like her honesty here. At least she isn’t like, “Oh, it was so easy, my body just snapped back and I sat around eating cupcakes, #YOLO.” She really did go on a strict diet and worked out a lot and it showed. As for her parents being the nannies… Ryan Reynolds said before that they didn’t have a nanny and they have very supportive family members. Do you believe that? I might believe that, but I think as soon as Blake gives birth to this second kid, suddenly there will be a nanny, if not several nannies.

My mother in law watches my kids while I work and she’s my baby sitter too. I pay her like I pay a nanny, I assume this ‘family’ situation is similar. It’s all about who you trust with your kids and if a family member is willing to pick up with the child care, why not?

I eliminated soy about a year ago and it’s in everything but it’s also life changing to get rid of. I’ll never go back.

Is there soy in things I’m not aware of? I don’t think I consciously eat soy outside of certain dishes. What did you eliminate that had soy in it?

      • Little Darling says:

You can google “what foods is soy hidden in”
And get a pretty comprehensive list.

        Some are:
        Baked goods and baking mixes
Beverage mixes, for example, hot chocolate and lemonade
Canned tuna and minced hams, for example, seasoned or mixed with other ingredients for flavour
        Chewing gum
Cooking spray, margarine, vegetable shortening and vegetable oil
        Dressings, gravies and marinades
        Frozen desserts
        Lecithin
        Milled corn
Meat products with fillers, for example, preprepared hamburger patties, hotdogs and cold cuts
        Seafood -based products and fish
        Seasoning and spices
Snack foods, for example, soy nuts
Soups, broths, soup mixes and stocks
        Soy pasta
Spreads, dips, mayonnaise and peanut butter

My mom, sister and I just did the Virgin Diet, which is a variation on an elimination diet, and it was the best thing ever! We all turned up having gluten, dairy and soy intolerances, and pretty much changed how we feel.

As a lactation consultant, soy is usually the second thing I have my clients remove from their diet in addition to dairy, if their babies are particularly gassy and colicky.

I like her attitude here. She’s straightforward with admitting to diet and working out. And I’m going to take her soy advice, so overall, good interview.

If we all had the bank account to have two personal trainers and a nutritionist, someone on hand constantly to help us care for a newborn, hair and makeup artists and the motivation to lose weight quickly in order to keep our job… we could be JUST LIKE BLAKE. She’s everywoman!

I know I sound mean, I’m sure she’s harmless, but in my opinion, she got lucky through family connections and good plastic surgery. Her first film was directed by her father. Her older brother greased the wheels for her to get auditions. To me, she’s yet another example of someone who’s successful because of nepotism.

…I’ll go drink some coffee and get over myself now.

    • CharlotteCharlotte says:

She’s a Woody Allen apologist. No apologies necessary for not liking her.

    • Wiffie says:

On the nepotism: you can’t be that bitter about it, because its EVERYWHERE. People get a summer job working their dads moving company, cashier at mom’s shop, waiting tables at the family restaurant. That’s how life works. You go where connections lead, if that is your wish.

      @orangecrush

      Bravo!

You know, without a nanny and family close by, and two babies under the age of 15 months, I weighed about 10 pounds less 6 months after giving birth than before. Stress, lack of sleep and no time to eat can do this, too.

  6. jeanpierre says:

She will never talk about that shark, huh?

  7. magnolia says:

Can you say eating disorder? Restricting foods when you are not allergic to them sounds like restrictive eating/orthorexia. That’s hella sad. Hope her baby girl has more self confidence than she does :/
