Priyanka Chopra doesn’t plan too far ahead: ‘Man proposes, God disposes’

Priyanka Chopra scored the features in several magazines’ September issues. That makes me happy! I don’t watch Quantico (it looks terrible), but I’m always glad to see Indian ladies succeeding and getting mainstream attention from the media. Priyanka has a feature in the September issue of Marie Claire to promote the new season of Quanitcoyou can read the full piece here. Just a word about this fashion editorial: I kind of hate it? Priyanka is so beautiful and these photos don’t do her justice at all. Some highlights from the piece:

Plans: “I never plan too far ahead. Man proposes, God disposes. Why waste my time?”

She’s the first Indian actress to play the lead on an American show: “It’s a lot of physical work. But the real challenge was convincing America that I could play an American girl.”

Playing the villain in Baywatch: “She’s a billionaire bitch on a beach wearing couture. I want to be her.”

The idea of playing James Bond: “Depends on the part. She’d definitely have to be called Jane.”

Ideal Weekend: “Going to the beach and binge-watching a TV show while eating pizza.”

Finishing Touches: “My evil-eye bracelet with a mantra on it, and a necklace that belonged to my dad.”

Must-Have: “My Valentino camo-print backpack; I carry my whole life in it. If I get on a plane and lose my luggage, I can survive with just my backpack.”

Last Purchase: “First edition copies of Robinson Crusoe and Arabian Nights at a vintage bookstore in Savannah, Georgia—I’m a voracious reader!”

Her Vice: “Eating. I love chicken wings, pizza, burgers, and Thai food!”

Go-To Look: “I’m a very jeans, jacket, and boots kind of girl.”

[From Marie Claire]

I think a lot of actresses these days have gotten “the J-Law memo,” as in they’re trying to be Just Like Us and super-relatable. Do you buy it with Priyanka? I sort of do – I think she eats pizza and chicken wings and she’s a good traveler and she doesn’t make a huge fuss over things. In some ways, her story is the Classic Immigrant’s Tale: she’s a breath of fresh air in a stuffy (white) world, and she’s finding success because of her perceived uniqueness. On the other side, she really feels like Hollywood needs her more than she needs Hollywood – she’s already very successful in India and if this Hollywood thing doesn’t work out, so be it. That makes me like her more.

I like her, she seems lovely ( I don’t believe the pizza and chicken wings story, but everyone is trying to be relatable these days), but she can’t act. So while I appreciate that Hollywood is giving attention to non-white actresses, I wish they would give the chance to someone talented rather than someone pretty.

    • CornyBlue says:

She can absolutely act. She is terrible in Quantico I wont argue but she is amazing in most of her Bollywood movies and exceptional in one or two of them.

She has Rachel weisz eyes, and yes i do believe she is free spirit. Beautiful woman

If my husband’s family (husband, father, siblings) are any indication, Indians can just EAT. I have never seen a family group eat with such, uh, veracity. They can certainly control themselves, but when they decide to indulge, buy, do they. My husband is the guy who goes to the Thai place and orders 3 meals – one plated, two to go (dinner, breakfast, lunch – since, you know, “it tastes better once it sits”. Does the exact same thing at the sushi place, everywhere. The whole family is like this, with the exception of his mother (the sole Syrian in the group). She’s like me – the grazer who eats a little now, takes it home, eats a little later. My only companion. Though she isn’t a huge eater, she’s immensely proud of her cooking ability – and her children’s ability to “put all that away.”

I am so incredibly envious of people like that. the fact that some people have fast metabolisms is such an injustice.

      • Sam says:

Me too. If I ate like my husband, I would not look as I do. I’m not sure how true it is, but he swears that all the spices in his cooking “speed things up” and help him burn more. I’m not so sure that’s doable, but hey, I’m open to the possibility.

        + 10000%

      • koparbadi says:

fast metabolisms aren’t really a thing. i think the difference between a “fast metabolism” and a slow/average metabolism is an extra 110-150 calories a day.

I don’t know, she lost me with the book comment. If she is buying Robinson Crusoe and Arabian nights to READ – then I doubt she’s a voracious reader, because most voracious readers would have those out of the way by now.
If, however, she bought those because they were first editions, then she could be a voracious reader, but this specific instance would not be an illustration of that as much as of her being a voracious book collector?

    • Locke Lamora says:

People who actually are voracious readers rarely have to point out they are voracious readers.

    • Sam says:

Wouldn’t first editions be extremely collectable and rare? I’ve known exactly one “book collector” and he would not DREAM of actually sitting down and reading his most valuable stuff (including some first editions). They’re things you get just to have, or to display. I’m not sure she’s talking about “genuine” first editions. They’d also be insanely expensive!

    • MrsBump says:

She was asked about her latest purchase, not the last books she has read..

  5. HH says:

I’m happy for her success from a diversity standpoint. And I think she’s stunningly beautiful. However, for some inexplicable reason, I don’t find her likable. Maybe if I see her in interviews it will help. I’ve only read her magazine spreads, and maybe I’m projecting and/or inferring a certain tone that isn’t meant to be there.

  6. CornyBlue says:

Can i just say she makes the absolutely ugly Chanel work ? I used to be huge huge fan of PC back when i was like 12 or 13 but i find her a bit insufferable nowadays.

  7. mp says:

She’s so beautifull, but i’ve seen her before pictures, and well…she looks really different, wish she could have make it with her original face.

  8. Neha says:

Isn’t Mindy kaling the first Indian actress to play the lead on an American show?

I think she’s a great actress in Bollywood movies, but she really is awful in quantico. She comes off as really arrogant and she just doesn’t have the talents to back that up. She’s also too much of a try-hard.

    • anon says:

Mindy Kaling is American, only of Indian origin. Priyanka Chopra is Indian-except for a few years growing up in the US.

  9. bucketbot says:

I generally can’t with Chanel pieces yet somehow I do like this on her.

I know she’s bad on Quantico. Tried watching it once here in India. Couldn’t stand her acting. She’s better in Bollywood movies, I swear. Her movies though are a hit or a miss. And I love her And I want her to succeed and do well. So I kinda feel bad for saying this but personally I don’t really like her in any of her international work as yet. Be it her music (Pitbull was all she could get to feature on her singles) or Quantico, nothing impressed me. And I love her. .
