Will ‘Stranger Things’ season two have ‘Justice for Barb’?

Spoilers for Stranger Things, available now on Netflix, follow
In Friday’s post about Stranger Things, Netflix’s 80s horror hit series, some of you mentioned “Justice for Barb,” which was the first time I’d heard of that. Barb played the mousy best friend and was the only young person taken by the monster and actually killed, from what we know. She appeared in just three episodes and her fate seemed unfair, particularly since she was one of the few sensible, non-a-hole teens when the worst of them survived. (Although Steve redeemed himself in the end, I would have liked to have seen his friends bite it.) Apparently there’s still time for that though. While Netflix hasn’t made an announcement about whether Stranger Things will get a second season, given how popular it is, and given Netflix’s history of renewing all of their original shows, it’s widely assumed that this is happening. The show’s creators, brothers Matt and Ross Duffer, tell IGN that they’re aware of the support and love for Barb and want to do right by the character in the second season. There are speculative spoilers for season two of Stranger Things below:

The outlook isn’t good for Barbara. One of the show’s breakout characters, Barb was last seen looking very much dead in the Upside Down. But as the brothers recently paraphrased James Cameron when talking about no one ever really being dead in sci-fi, we asked if she might reappear in Season 2.

“I can’t see it happening” came Matt’s response. “But Barb will not be forgotten. We’ll make sure there’s some justice for Barb. People get very frustrated, understandably, that the town doesn’t seem to be really dealing with Barb. That stuff is all happening. We’re just not spending any screen time on it.

“It’s not like her parents are like ‘Oh Barb left. She died!’ Season One actually takes place over the course of six or seven days – it’s a really short period of time. So part of what we want to do with hypothetical Season 2 is to explore the repercussions of everything that happened.”

[From IGN]

It’s a shame that Barb is gone but maybe we’ll get to see her in flashbacks and learn more about her backstory. The interview also reveals the fate of another character you may or may not care about, go here to read. I personally do not care about that character, but he may be necessary for some reason.

Of course everyone is wondering what’s happening with Eleven, who disappeared in a mist of black smoke when she destroyed the monster. As Bustle notes, there’s a substantial clue that Eleven is still around. The write that “One month later, we spot Chief Hopper taking food from the station Christmas party to a small box in the woods. Included in the bundle is a couple of Eggo waffles, which we recognize as Eleven’s favorite.” This suggests of course that Eleven is in the Upside Down, biding her time.

IGN has an interview with Mille Bobby Brown, the 12 year-old British actress who plays Eleven. It sounds like she had a great rapport with the other child actors and with Winona Ryder, which you would expect given how convincingly all the characters were played. I also found an interview with the man who played the monster inside an animatronic suit. He’s really committed to it and described what it’s like inside the loud, 30 pound suit. There’s some CGI used but most of it was him in a suit on stilts.

I don’t understand the love of this character. She was kind of a judgey friend, albeit, worried about her friend, but only in the show for like 6 minutes!

    • Luca76 says:

I loved Barb yeah she was totally judgy but she was also kind and supportive and ultimately just trying to be a good person.

      • Aussie girl says:

Barb was great but I didn’t understand all the love she got. As discussed in the post, the only thing I question was the lack of care that she got after she dissapeared. Oh and “the monster” scared the crap out of me!

    • INeedANap says:

She is an unapologetic dork with a strong moral compass, but she’s not perfect. All the characters had good and bad, Barb too. For a lot of us who were chronically uncool growing up and sidelined for popularity, Barb spoke to us.

    • Usain says:

Because it is rare to see an actual awkward and ungainly teenage girl in television and film. Most of them look like Nancy (whom I liked) and the “dorky” girls are usually played by Rachael Leigh Cook. It was wonderful to see an actual dowdy teenager for once. Representation matters.

      • manda says:

well, to be fair, there were a lot of unattractive teens and kids on shows in the 80’s and 90’s (Tina Yothers, all the kids on Roseanne, Tempest Bledsoe are some that immediately pop to mind). I thought her character was more of a “look at how AWFULLY we used to dress in the 80’s, ZOMG!!” That was what I took from her

  2. WingKingdom says:

At first I was mad about Barb, but then I was thinking about the standard trope where the girls who have sex get killed and the “nice” girls live, and thought maybe they were trying to subvert a horror trope. Made me feel better.

    • Red32 says:

That’s what I thought, too. When Steve and Nancy started going upstairs, all I could think of were “the rules” from Scream. By the end, Steve was practically at Dead Man Walking status. I liked how they handled that character, and honestly I’m glad Nancy is with him. Sorry but Jonathan is creepy.

      • QQ says:

Jonathan is EXTREMELY Creepy, I kept Calling him slither eyes! All the kids except Eleven really were Veeeerryyy awkward looking, God Bless em

  3. Erinn says:

I loved Barb. She was awesome, although she had brief screen time.

I also looove Hopper and am worried about his dealings to get the kids off the hook. I had read a theory that eleven could be his daughter – but I don’t really buy it, even though it’d be kind of nice. The thing that stood out was that he had brought her eggos – but he shouldn’t know that she loves eggos. He was never with her when she was eating them. And his own daughters death was explained as cancer, but it seemed like she had had an asthma attack on the playground. Given the way that the ‘bad guys’ seemed totally cool kidnapping kids – I think there could be a possibility that his daughter could have been grabbed for the group as well. Who knows though.

    • Aang says:

I think that was a seizure not an asthma attack.

      • Erinn says:

Ah – that makes sense. I was a bit distracted while watching that part, honestly. I knew it was going to be sad, and only kind of half watched.

    • Luca76 says:

She isn’t his daughter but there was a fair amount of foreshadowing that made me think she was going to be his daughter that died. But then they showed his daughter dying of an illness.

      • Red32 says:

I’m so confused by some of the theories out there.

Like a previous poster said, Bustle “discovered” the Eggos which were in plain sight and obvious.

Eleven is supposedly Hopper’s daughter, except that he literally watched his blonde daughter flatline and brunette Eleven looks nothing like her.

      • Erinn says:

Red – I know. I mean – he saw the daughter die and all … but at the same time, these people are super sketchy. They’re doing experiment on top of experiment – I wouldn’t put it past them to have faked a death and taken a kid. I’m still open to the possibility that his daughter could actually be another experiment – not necessarily 11. But at the same time – I’d like to see Hopper be a kind of surrogate parent for her.

Just keep in mind – this kid was 11. Which would lead me to assume there are 10 more unchecked kids out there.

      • Red32 says:

Erinn, oh it’s absolutely possible that his daughter could be 1-10. I just hope they don’t go there because I hate when things get ridiculously convoluted just to make all the characters family in some way. Why somehow fake a long, debilitating illness when they could have grabbed a kid off a bike? I think he will take on a surrogate father role for Eleven, though.

      • Deedee says:

Wouldn’t Hopper know about the Eggos from the boys and/or the police report after she robbed the store, taking only Eggos?

    • TX Laney says:

I totally think Eleven is the daughter of Terri Ives and Brenner. The mother was in the experiment group headed by Brenner so maybe…..

      • JustCrimmles says:

Eleven (or One through Ten) being Terri’s missing child is much more plausible than El being Hopper’s. Given that real MK Ultra was about mind control, it’s not a stretch to claim telekinesis as a result of being born of an experimentee. It seems more like Brenner got these kids from birth, not kidnapping kids from the hospital while they were fighting a chronic illness. I hope season two explores finding the other kids, or at least figuring out what happened to them.

And Barb looks so much like one of my aunts did back in the 80s… maybe the realism has a part in how strongly she has resonated with fans? Definitely team justice for Barb though, maybe they’ll address more of what happened in the month they skipped over next season.

  4. hnmmom says:

Poor Barb. 🙁 I read where she is supposed to be reminiscent of Martha Plimpton in Goonies but my husband and I both thought she was a nod to Molly Ringwald.

  5. Barrett says:

I was sad pudgy white girl with glasses goes missing. No one cares!!!!

  6. Erinn says:

On a slightly unrelated note: I couldn’t watch Steve without thinking of Jean Ralphio from Parks and Rec the WHOLE time.

Then I found a joke ‘theory’ that he was actually Jean Ralphio’s dad – since it took place in Indianna- it was great. And nice to know I wasn’t the only one who saw the resemblance.

  7. Wowza says:

So crazy that we live in a world where Netflix’s line up of shows stacks up next to the big networks.

I binge watched their other new show, “The Get Down”, this weekend– holy crap, has anyone else seen this? It’s kind of messy but also insanely ambitious and affecting. I need to discuss!

I really appreciate that so many of their shows center around women or POC. I think that has actually been a big underlying factor of their success. “OITNB” felt revolutionary when it came out. “The Get Down” ‘s entire main cast is black and Latino and it’s really refreshing.

  8. Adele Dazeem says:

Omg. Still recovering from my lost weekend. I spent every minute that I wasn’t doing what is expected of me binge watching Stranger Things. You guys were spot on, I’m so obsessed! The 80s and teen angst and 80s movies and even the houses and clothes and oh my. Gave me such deja vu.

  9. LolaBones says:

Everyones talking about Barb and forget about lovable bear Benny 🙁

  10. Crumpet says:

Mille Bobby Brown was the best thing about that show.

But yes – justice for Barb! It looked like she went down hard, and she didn’t deserve that. And Steve may have redeemed himself, but he still LOOKS like a douche. Haha

  11. Belle Epoch says:

It was really noticeable how completely clueless the other parents are (especially Barb’s mother). I felt bad for the mother saying “you can tell me anything” and the daughter just saying “I’m fine.” Been there!

  12. Hejhej says:

I really liked Barb and I’m glad we’ll see more of her storyline, even if we won’t see her again.

Actually I’m really just looking forward to season 2 period.

  13. aenflex says:

Wasn’t 11 vaporizing the monster justice for Barb, and the two hunters and the two men from Hawking? I would think so.
