Calvin Harris: Taylor Swift & I ‘were careful for it not to be a media circus’

CH GQ

Sometimes the gossip-universe has a wonderful sense of humor and a funny sense of timing. Just as the world was learning about the Tiddlesplit, Calvin Harris was attending the British GQ Awards in London. This was (I think?) Calvin’s first red carpet appearance since he and Taylor Swift split up. While no one knows for sure if Calvin got a text as he was walking the carpet (“bruh, Tay and Hiddles OVER hahahaha”), he did say some words that were interpreted as some kind of reference to Tay-Tay. But no one even needed to stretch that far, because hours after Calvin attended that event, British GQ released their October cover with Calvin. And the first interview excerpts are entirely about Tay-Tay and that Twitter incident this summer. Oh, she’ll love this! Because she’s so private. The quotes:

The very public breakup with Taylor: “It’s very difficult when something I consider so personal plays out very publicly. The aftermath of the relationship was way more heavily publicised than the relationship itself. When we were together, we were very careful for it not to be a media circus. She respected my feelings in that sense. I’m not good at being a celebrity.”

His Twitter hissy fit: “It was completely the wrong instinct. I was protecting what I see as my one talent in the world being belittled. It felt like things were piling on top of me, and that was when I snapped. I’m not good at being a celebrity, but when it ended, all hell broke loose. Now I see that Twitter thing as a result of me succumbing to pressure. It took me a minute to realize that none of that matters. I’m a positive guy.”

The wrong situation: “For both of us it was the wrong situation. It clearly wasn’t right, so it ended, but all of the stuff that happened afterwards…”

[From British GQ]

My favorite quote? “When we were together, we were very careful for it not to be a media circus. She respected my feelings in that sense.” As in, he was the one who was uncomfortable with the Swift Circus and she “respected” his choice not to become an “I Heart T.S.” t-shirt-wearing, career-destroying meme. There’s an implied judgment in that quote, that she was looking for a media circus and she found it with Tom Hiddleston. Of course, Calvin gave this interview weeks ago, when Tiddles Was Still Real.

As for his words about his Twitter hissy… his hissy fit was honestly one of the best parts of the summer, and it made me like him. His Twitter tirade came just before Kim Kardashian dropped her receipts too, so it was a nice little precursor of the Snake Emoji Backlash to come. Besides, Calvin didn’t say anything untrue in his tirade – he was pissed off (justifiably) because Tay-Tay was waging a petty little campaign against him, and he called her out and said he wouldn’t be her punching bag, a la Kanye and Katy Perry. No lies detected. Besides, why does everyone act like Taylor Swift gets the last word on everything?

    Soon they’ll bee back together.
They are pettiness match in heaven, they belong to each other.

    • lilacflowers says:

I’ve been saying that for months. They’ll spend Christmas together. Has she done a break-up, back together relationship yet? This will be it.

      • freebunny says:

She never did before as much as I know, but I really see them get back together.

      • Naya says:

This would be really humiliating for Tom. Introducing his mother to his week old girlfriend, not to mention dozens of paparazzi only to have her run back to the ex three months later.

      • lilacflowers says:

@Naya, I doubt Tom cares at this point.

      • Shambles says:

I think they’ll get back together too. They obviously both still reeally care, him based on the way he speaks about her in this interview and generally still talks about her a lot, her based on the GIANT “fck you, look how public I can be with someone else” new ‘relationship.’ And he was obviously good for her because he chilled her out a lot, and obviously really into her despite her obvious crazy, which is not something she’s going to come by every day. She’ll be back, and he’ll take her back. They’re perfectly matched.

    • Louise177 says:

I can’t imagine they’ll get back together.Especially after the fallout when they broke up. Taylor most likely cheated. The relationship was probably on it’s last legs but based on timing she was still with Calvin. Not to mention Taylor tried to make Calvin look like a tool. He did throw a hissy fit but I agree with most of what he did. Calvin just had a bad delivery. And yes, in pap photos it seemed Calvin ignored them while Taylor was consistently smiling and waving to them. She loves the spotlight.

    • iralagi says:

I hope they’re not, though I like Taylor best during her relationship with Calvin Harris. She almost convinced me that she always play as victim rumour was not true. But here we are again post hiddleswift, reading the same news about how thirsty his ex-boyfriend is.

      • Snarkweek says:

So why did hissy fit Calvin release the first spin about doing the dumping because Taylor was clingy and not sexy enough? How admirable can someone be who says this?

      • Val says:

Exactly Snarkweek! Taylor has been mostly silent while Calvin has been milking aaallll the media attention around this breakup.

      • iralagi says:

Calvin was the one who ended all speculation around that break up by tweeting “The truth is a relationship end, etc etc..”. He respect Taylor more than any of her exes. He supported her during their relationship, he acknowledged her. He’s the one who confirmed there’s indeed a relationship by posting picture of Taylor’s cat on his IG. He’s also the one who ended the PR speculation after they broke up.
To me he’s been acting as good boyfriend and ex. Can you expect that from Tom?

    • TyrantDestroyed says:

I’m crossing my fingers at that. They seem to be made for each other and it would be fun to watch them together for more years.

    • Keaton says:

I’ve thought this for a while now. I think this is the only real relationship she’s had. And even though he was a bit assy post-break up I think he cares about her.
      To me they really fit.

  2. The Gift says:

He’s 6’5″. Look Calvin, (or Adam) Forget this Taytay nonsense and jump into my bed.

  3. Nicole says:

No lies detected either. He’s totally right. They didn’t walk any carpets together. The most publicity they got was snaps on her IG. The relationship seemed very normal and mature for her because it was fairly low key and yes out of the public. He’s not known for the spectacle.
So yes that’s a major reason why most people didn’t believe Hiddleswift. She went from a low key relationship to possibly cheating and thrusting that into the spotlight in an embarrassing fashion. While Harris is petty sometimes you don’t want to back down when someone is publicly trying to destroy you for no reason other than the fact that they are terrible.
Swiftgate 2016 was quite fun. I’m already laughing at the pap shoots Taylor has staged for “revenge”.

    • Betti says:

Tay Tay’s idea of ‘revenge’ is just as silly and immature as she is – being papped literally with her ‘head held high’ aka ‘nose stuck in the air’ showing off her new tits and bad styling. Girl needs a new stylist.

      • Nicole says:

She’s needs a therapist or a life coach so she can grow up. Embarrassing that I’m the same age as her. Smh

    • Artemis says:

There are other ways to be public besides walking the RC. They put their vacation on social media with ultra posed shots. They sat front row at an awards show. She congratulated Karlie by putting her boyfriend front and center. She was liking tweets about how Tayvin are such a super couple. In comparison, I prefer couples who walked the RC but refrain any other form of selling their relationship. It’s a normal thing to support each other’s job in public and then live their life privately. There are couples who walk RCs all the time yet I don’t know their wedding anniversary, kid’s names etc…

And they broke up because Swift felt he didn’t want to be public with her and didn’t support her career enough. She hid her name for his track and then is angry and wants the credit after all. She is not private and I think if Calvin wanted, they would have been just as seen as Hiddleswift.

      • Nicole says:

Yea but that was months in. Again Calvin supported her in HIS way. Proud posts when she won and in support of her work. They sat together in what two award functions during a year? That’s calvins doing for sure.
And I’m sorry but Taylor is one of the biggest names in the game. If she wanted her name on the song from the jump she would’ve had it. I’m not buying that BS excuse. She pulled that out when she took the gloves off post split because she’s petty

      • Snarkweek says:

        Artemis
Your theory makes no sense because she and TH are over and he was clearly okay being seen with her. Also this leaves out the shady trip to the massage parlor and the sketchy car accident.

    • Becky says:

Nicole, this was the impression I got too. I didn’t really follow when they started dating, but apparently they didn’t get papped for the 1st couple of months.

And she needs some serious therapy.

      • iralagi says:

@nicole @becky I also think they care about each other. They wouldn’t be in it for 15 months without any feelings involve.
Since am a calvin harris apologist, I’m not really sure I want Taylor for him. I got to know Taylor from Calvin, and I did like her during their relationship. She seems normal and cute at the time. Like every 20-something with his first serious boyfriend.

  4. Jayna says:

Yeah, this is like the iceberg thawing interview, a softening in attitude. Back together by Christmas is my prediction.

    • Erinn says:

      I think it’s possible.

Honestly? I think they seemed like a relatively normal couple until it imploded.

  5. LB says:

I liked what he said about the Twitter incident. I don’t blame him one bit for reacting that way but it’s good to see him be introspective about it.

  6. iralagi says:

This is what I’ve been saying about This Is What You Came For dispute. If I were in Calvin’s position I would feel that Taylor (and her team) tried to belittle his talent.
I will say it again, say what you like about Calvin Harris, at the end of the day he’s still a self-made man.

    • Miss S says:

I don’t know much about his past douche ways and in this context it seems irrelevant to me, but I can’t see how people can in all honesty say he was petty about any of this. He was level headed considering what was thrown at him. I actually find him classy for someone who could made everything worse. Media just played it so it looked worse than it was, people were actually disappointed because he didn’t deliver the drama they were expecting.

He is very successful and has been for a while, no one can accuse him of using Taylor, but somehow he is really the bad guy, how?

Also, saying this guy is ugly like I read all the time? Please! It’s like some people just want to justify hatred towards him.

  7. Div says:

In this whole mess, I tend to view Calvin behind Kanye, Kim, and even Taylor because I remember the Rita Ora thing and how he basically tried to wreck her career and the gross, somewhat clueless/ racist way he picked his stage name. Plus, I thought it was ridiculous in how he tried to play down Taylor’s part in that stupid Rihanna song and then eventually copped to her doing both the lyrics and the melody.

However, I give him credit for sounding almost mature in this interview. He sounds far less immature and snake like and the contrast between him owning some of his f*ck ups and Taylor is interesting. Also, I do kind of like how he called out Tom for fulling participating in the shit sh*w. A lot of people kept going poor widdle Tommy and I was like bitch, please, he’s just as thirsty as Taylor but has a better sense of when to dial it down because of his public image.

    • Bonzo says:

Agree on all points. I thought he actually sounded mature in this interview. And I don’t blame him for clapping back on Twitter. I was glad to see *someone* have the balls to call her out.

  8. paolanqar says:

They belong together. And i don’t mean it in a good way.
They both are childish, immature, egotistical, self-obsessed and petty.
I f this is not a match made in heaven I don’t know what it is.

    • Betti says:

Thats probably why it lasted longer than any of her previous relationships – 2 vain narcissists.

      • graymatters says:

They also did well separated for months at a time. When you factor in a seven month tour and other work commitments, their relationship face time wasn’t really all that long.

  9. Jegede says:

Compared to Odell Beckham Jr’s reaction to Lena Dunham’s ongoing BS –

Adam Calvin Harris stays proving to me how much he and Taylor truly belong to each other….in a toilet bowl.

  10. K says:

To me this was him just being mature and proving he moved on and decided to let it go.

  11. spidey says:

Shouldn’t Calvin have just said “Taylor and Tom? Nothing to do with me”

    • Goldie says:

He wasn’t talking about Tay& Tom. He was talking about his own breakup with her. This was a magazine interview so it must have been done several weeks/months ago.

I thought he was petty during their breakup, but I think he explained himself well here.

  12. Loo says:

I think Taylor’s bad publicity is of her own making and don’t feel sorry for her but I’m sick of people infantilizing her 32-35 year old ex boyfriends. They knew what they were getting into when they started dating her.

  13. artnoosa says:

Just go away and take Tay with you, we need a break.

  14. Dumbledork says:

    He’s got douche face.

  15. Cinderella says:

He’s not good at being a celebrity??? He’s joking, right?

  16. Anguishedcorn says:

That’s quite a Blue Steele he’s working, there.

  17. sequinedheart says:

I never noticed this before but Calvin Harris is a stone fox! Goddamn, that picture just made me look 2, maybe 3 times…
