Who was the best-dressed ‘Game of Thrones’ lady at this year’s Emmys?

While Game of Thrones picked up some major awards – Best Drama, Best Direction, Best Writing – the actors of GoT were shut out of the awards. It was genuinely sad, because I thought Kit Harington really deserved it. And at the very least, Sophie Turner deserved a nomination. But she didn’t get one. Still, Sophie is classy and she came out to the Emmys to have fun and look all grown up. She is SO pretty and it’s so disconcerting to see her all grown up. Sophie wore this simple Valentino gown and ForeverMark jewels. I liked this gown a lot because it was perfect for where Sophie is: not nominated personally, but on a great show that consistently wins awards. She looked comfortable, but she also looked like she tried. My least favorite part of this look was her hair.

Maisie Williams wore Markus Lupfer, fake bangs and green eye makeup. Maisie and Sophie are close in age, but Sophie seems so sophisticated and Maisie seems like she’s still figuring sh-t out. Like, I don’t blame a 19-year-old girl for experimenting with her look, playing around with fake bangs or having fun with makeup. But this was a strange overall look for the Emmys. And she should throw out those bangs!!

Emilia Clarke wore this crazy skin-tone Versace gown which fit her like a glove. I would have been interested in seeing this dress on someone with darker skin, just to see what the effect would have been. Because on the red carpet, this Versace did blend in sort of perfectly with Emilia’s English rose skin tone. Still, this is a lot better than the crap she usually wears.

And the final GoT lady (Lena Headey wasn’t there) is Gwendoline Christie. Gwendoline wore Giles, and I’m almost positive that she’s dating the designer (Giles Beacon). I wish her boyfriend would make her better clothes.

I’m pretty sure Gwendoline and Giles Deacon have been open about the fact that they’re dating. I thought I read somewhere that they’ve been together for a few years.

  2. Marie says:

Contrary to popular opinion, I prefer blonde Sophie. She was the best dressed among her castmates, looking all statuesque and grown up.

    • Erinn says:

I like blonde Sophie, too. It’s a pretty shade, and it suits her. She looks good as a redhead, but I kind of like this look better.

I think she has a few tattoos – I’m guessing they covered them up with makeup. I just googled and she has a small one visible (likely because it’s still pretty new) that matches Maisies – it’s either the date that they’d met, or the date when they found out they’d be on GoT.

    • Misti says:

Blonde Sophie looks too much like Paris Hilton.

    • Ronaldinhio says:

I think she looks stunning and age appropriate – love the eyemakeup

I forgive young people anything in terms of fashion, hair and make up tbh but I can’t say the same for that lampshade that Gwendoline was wearing
      NO!!

  3. LannisterForever says:

I’m so sad Lena Headey didn’t win (and didn’t attend). Cersei is my favorite character and Lena plays her to perfection.

  4. Rocio says:

Sophie has grown up so fast. I feel old.

  5. Chinoiserie says:

Everyone is much better than last year (well I do not remember Gwendoline last year if she was there).

Sophie looks perfect. Maisie tried too hard with the hair and makeup and the purse can not compare to last year’s but I liked her dress. Emilia looked nice but her hair and color of her dress could have been better. I do not like Gwendolines dress’s bottom part but she looks great from waist up.

  6. teatimeiscoming says:

As a fellow Overly Tall Lady, it’s so nice to see Gwendoline Christie on the red carpet. Its nice to see someone who isn’t exaggerating their height to be “5’7”.”

    • Naya says:

I love that she is wearing those stilettos. I’m not a tall lady and I’m not a stilleto girl either but I hate when tall girls feel like they cant wear the shoes they like because some dude will feel emasculated or something. Gwendoline is like, “yeah, I’m statuesque. Deal with it”.

    • ichsi says:

YES! Same here. It feels so good to see her own it. The dress is still… wasted potential, could have been something Vivienne Westwood-esque but what is that hem? Maisie couldn’t look more British if she tried (and I think it fits her well), Emilia is gorgeous and her dress looks better than the ones she usually wears and Sophie is simply stunning. Love everything about it, including the hair.

      • Bootsie says:

        What does “looking British” mean?!

      • Va Va Kaboom says:

For what its worth I took “British” to mean 60s Mod. I think Maisie looks great here, she usually takes risks with her red carpet outfits. There wasn’t much chance she would win, so I appreciate that she took the opportunity to have a little fun and dress playfully.

    • Dominique says:

There is no such thing as an “Overly Tall Lady”!

  7. Aiobhan says:

Overall I think Emilia looked the best. Her hair and makeup was very well done and the dress fit perfectly.

I guess I am the only one who thinks this but none of the main cast of GOT can act-most especially Kit and Emilia ( I am an unabashed Dany and Cersei fan-especially now that I am on book four of the series btw) The only person who deserved a nomination from the show was Alfie and even then I would not have given him the win.

    • Gena says:

Nooo, you’re not alone at all. I like Emilia, Kit, and Sophie but I was frankly shocked that they were nominated. They’re so lifeless. I’ve seen Kit and Emilia in other things where they were quite good though.

      • Locke Lamora says:

I can’t believe someone thinks Sophie should have been nominated. She had a few good moments in the entire series, but she’s so wooden most of the time. She’s a really bad actress, even worse than Emilia. Amd controversial opinion, but I dont find her pretty at all.

Alfie should have been nominated, I agree. And Lena deserved her nomination.

    • lilacflowers says:

I think this was the best Emilia has ever looked.

    • mom2two says:

You are not the only one, I don’t think Kit and Emilia can act at all. Frankly if anyone deserved an acting Emmy from the Battle of the Bastards episode it would have been Iwan Rheon. Alfie Allen is really good and should at least be a multiple nominee. I would have at least nominated Alfie, Iwan or Liam Cunningham over Kit and Peter Dinklage this year.

I think the show knows how to play to what the Emmy voters like about Emilia, making strident speeches in a made up language surrounded by CGI.

I would give Emilia my best dressed of the GoT ladies.

I liked Maisie’s dress but the hair just totally ruined the overall look. Not a fan of Sophie’s dress or hair. Gwendoline, I don’t even know what to say.

      • Aiobhan says:

@ mom2two Iwan was a little too cartoony for my taste, but I would not have been mad at the nom. Liam was also very good in the scenes where he figured out what happened to Shireen. Liam holds a special place because he played the father in A Little Princess, which is one of my fav childhood films of all time.

    • msd says:

Peter, Lena and Maisie may not always have the best material but they can act! Kit, Emilia and Sophie are weaker; they need strong direction and strong writing to do good work. The Emmy problem GoT has is that it’s such a big ensemble, thus its nominal ‘leads’ – Kit, Emilia, Peter, Lena, Sophie, Maisie – are considered supporting by the usual standards. That means actual supporting characters in the show never get a look in even though they’re often more impressive. Charles Dance, for example, blew everyone else off screen but never got nommed for anything.

      • Aiobhan says:

@MSD I kind of figured once I wrote what I wrote that everyone would be piling on Emilia and not a good chunk of the rest of the cast-especially since Kit has a man bun and somehow that is distracting a lot of people from seeing that he looks like a lost cat in every scene he is in. Emilia nor Kit are not offensive to me at all. Emilia, like everyone else on the cast, has nothing to really work with. The writing is the main issue and not the actors as they have proven that when given good material the can all deliver. All of the characters are written poorly as Dumb and Dumber’s main goal seems to be style over substance. They won’t allow their characters to grow and make mistakes like they are doing in the books because they are like 14 year old boys in 40 year old male bodies. I wish George was writing the show as the best episodes of the series are the ones he wrote.

All of the actors have one or two looks that they pull out when needed, but none of them have displayed even half of a range-even Charles Dance was limited to sneering and dismissive looks. Lena is good at smug and vaguely menacing, but caring and motherly, not so much. Which is important because D&D are trying very hard to make Cersei look like a caring tiger mom and not a vicious narcissist who is slowly losing her mind. Peter with his fluctuating accent and general smarmy toned line delivery is snore inducing, and Maisie’s wide eyes and stubborn pout are just as bad as Emilia and Kits monotone delivery. Crying on command is not acting. Shouting your lines is not acting.

      • msd says:

Now I’m confused … you said “none of the main cast of GOT can act” which I responded to, but now it’s “the writing is the main issue and not the actors .. when given good material the can all deliver”? I can’t agree about George’s eps being best, apart from his excellent Blackwater in Season 2. The eps he wrote after that were weak compared to the rest of S3 and 4, I suspect because he churned them out quickly while trying to get back to the books.

      • Aiobhan says:

Yikes. That paragraph is a perfect example of why no one should try to post while distracted. They are several separate thoughts that I did not finish because I pressed send before reading it.

        Summary:

The writing on the show is juvenile.

George, to me, is a better writer than some of the other writers on the show.

Even when given “good material”, some of the actors cannot deliver even a mediocre performance.

    • Chinoiserie says:

I actually have completely opposite opinion funnily enough, Allen is the most overrated actor in the show after Headey and everyone in the cast (with maybe a couple of exceptions like Loras and Shae’s actors) are good in the roles and most great.

    • Vox says:

      I completely agree.

  8. Sixer says:

You are so bangist, Kaiser! I still like a nice FRINGE!

    • Locke Lamora says:

I love Maisie’s look. She looks so fun and experimantal. And I love the bangs. Most people look better with bangs.

      • Justjj says:

Maisie is great. Emilia and Sophie both feel hammy and overacting to me at times but it could be the writing. That kid that plays Bran is good too. Kit is like the emo kid in band that plays the oboe.

    • Evil Queen says:

I agree. I think she looks cute. Have never gotten the “bangs hate” unless its really over the top like Betty Page. Its the one big eye roll on this site to me.

      • Justjj says:

I love cute bangs. I don’t think they’re weird on Maisie here at all. She looks cute. I don’t think women under 21-24ish have a lot of use for refinement though, so I sort of favor Maisie here. She looks like she’s having fun. Sophie looks pretty but I just think she comes across as more posh and just sort of, I don’t know exacting? In general. If you arrive at who you are sooner, good for you. If you need more time to explore and experiment with fashion, or anything else, go for it. They are at the age to do it.

  9. Tifzlan says:

I actually really, really like Maisie’s dress! She looks like she’s having fun. Emilia’s dress is nice but the color is just… not my thing.

  10. Margo S. says:

I actually don’t like Sophie’s dress. Maisies dress is great! But are her bangs really fake? Or just hairsprayed too much? How do you put on fake bangs? I get that her green makeup was to bring out the green in the dress. It’s fun and works for her personality but i think ear tones suit her best. Emilia Clarke’s dress was boring. And I wish her hair had been down. And gwendoline is just so stunning. Not a huge fan of the dress but honestly, she could wear a plastic bag and I’d still be in love with her. Haha.

  11. Betti says:

Sophie by a mile – she looked great. Emilia is a beautiful girl but has terrible red carpet style – i don’t think she has quite found what works for her style and colour palette wise. Same goes for Maisie but she’s just being young and playful. That dress was not one of Gwens best looks and she normally looks great on a red carpet – her hair was fab thou.

  12. Macheath says:

Emilia looks so lovely. Very simple but beautiful look. Not a fan of Sophie or Maisie’s dresses but they still look nice. Gwendoline is very statuesque and I don’t think that silhouette really works well on her frame.

  13. LuluPolly says:

Do you think there’s any regret casting Emilia Clarke as Daenerys? Everyone on that show really brings so much to their character but I don’t feel anything when I watch her. That’s such a MAJOR role and in the book Daenerys is larger than life. Anyone else feel like this?

    • mom2two says:

I don’t think HBO or the producers regret it. Since Emilia was a recast (Tamzin Merchant had the role of Dany first), I truly believe they are very happy with her.

Personally, I think they could have found better. What if they found Tatiana Maslany before Orphan Black did?

    • mom2two says:

    • msd says:

She’s popular so no, I’m sure they don’t regret it. I thought she was good in Season 1 but the stronger the character became, the less convincing the acting was.

      • LuluPolly says:

Truly, she’s just…OK. When compared to Tyrion or Cersei or even that guy who played that Dorn prince….just literally everyone else ( I could go on and on), she doesn’t hold up. She’s…..I don’t know…..underplaying?

    • Nancy says:

She’s so small with a woman with so much power but I guess size doesn’t matter! She has no qualms with her nudity, which there is a lot. She does have the power to transform. She looks like a different person with the blonde wig on the show. But her acting???

      • LuluPolly says:

She definitely has qualms with nudity. In the books, Daenerys is partially nude most of the time. Her go-to dress leaves one breast exposed.
I never considered her small stature at all. It’s a charisma issue I think.

      • msd says:

Emilia added a no nudity clause a couple of seasons ago, when she got more clout – or rather, she has the final say about it now. That’s why she only did it once this season, when it served the story. I think the issue with her is that she has limited range and needs strong direction.

      • LuluPolly says:

Do you believe the story that she had a body double do the nude scene?
That’s part of my problem with her portrayal of Daenerys. It doesn’t ring true. In the books, being nude or partially nude 95% of the time is just a part of who Daenerys is. It’s not a big deal. Emilie makes it a big deal and there’s disconnect.

      • msd says:

AFAIK, Lena had a double for her walk of shame ( I think because she was pregnant?) but Emilia did her one nude scene last year, the one where she burned the khals and came out of the fire, herself because she thought it worked for the scene. I don’t think less nudity than the books detracts from the character … her acting sometimes does, which is more of an issue. 😉 The film and Tv industry still puts much more pressure on women to disrobe than men, they’ll do it anytime they can, basically. An actor being able to decide yes/no herself on a case by case basis is a good thing imo.

      • Va Va Kaboom says:

It was the show runners concerns, not Emilia’s demands, that made them deviate from the styles worn in the novels. The style for women in Essos is to expose one breast, though not in every city and not every woman, but it is very common. There is already quite a bit of criticism for gratuitous nudity now. Think about the backlash if in every Essos/Dany scene each woman has a breast on display. I think only a few bros would applaud the choice to stick with the source material.

  14. Mrs. Darcy says:

Sophie looked stunning, Maisie is always going to be the kooky experimental fashion girl, I think she looks cute apart from the bangs trauma. Emilia looks pretty but it’s just too much of a naked dress, I feel uncomfortable looking at her. Love Gwendolyn but her dress is horrid – she is a tall goddess and needs to dress like one.

  15. Misa says:

Emilia looks very good, Sophie looks stunning!!

  16. QQ says:

They all look “AIGH*’ Emily wins by a wide margin, that dress looked amazing in motion

  17. Lennox says:

Emilia looks like she really cannot breathe in that dress.

  18. Josefina says:

They all look good but none of them looked particularly stunning.

  19. Frey says:

Maisie has a cute dress, better than Sophia’ imo , but Sophie looks the best altogether. Emilia’s dress is pretty, but she tends to be a little underwhelming on the red carpet. Not sure what it is.

  20. Freddy Spaghetti says:

Maisie looks adorable, Sophie looks washed out, and I am not sure how Emilla could breathe in that dress.

I will always love Gwendoline Christie for embracing her height, and wearing heels to boot!

  21. shewolf says:

See I don’t see Maisie looking try hard at all. I mean pretty much anyone would look like a try hard next to Sophie because she’s classic… tall, statuesque and stunning. Plus it appears as if it’s in her personality to be a bit more muted. Maisie on the other hand doesn’t seem like the type to compose herself, she looks like she is absolutely thrilled to be there and it shows in her eyes and her posing. I think its really just a case of two completely different people. Switch their outfits and then I’d call them both try hards!

Plus you can see everyone’s different personality and physical response to the camera and crowd. Emilia is kind of classic and sultry like Sophie but she does look a tad bit awkward in front of the camera a la Maisie. Gwen looks comfortable as all hell and so she should be, she’s killing it in that outfit!

  22. KBeth says:

Sophie is so lovely, I like her dress. I do prefer her as a redhead though.
Maisie always looks a hot mess. Cute shoes though.
Emilia is really beautiful but it seems like she sort of always falls short, I’m never wowed by her look.
Gwen’s dress is awkward looking, too structured looking.
