These are photos of Naomi Watts on the New York set of Gypsy, an original series she’s filming for Netflix which is out next year. This is the first I’m hearing of the show, in which Watts stars and executive produces. She’s playing a therapist who develops “dangerous and intimate relationships with the people in her patients’ lives,” according to THR. Billy Crudup will costar. It’s by a writer I haven’t heard of before called Lisa Rudin, but the good news is that Sam Taylor-Johnson is directing the first two episodes. Netflix has some of the best original shows and I’m excited for this.

Naomi is obviously acting here, but these photos were taken on the day she later announced her split. It seems to have been a long time coming so I would bet she’s somewhat relieved the news is out and that she ripped off that bandaid. She was also papped out walking her tiny dog on Monday night. (How much can that dog walk really?) The Daily Mail has those photos and they’re exclusive. They claim that Naomi looked “downtrodden” but she’s smiling a little and looks fine to me, I don’t get that impression at all. Liev was also photographed out riding his bike that same day and the DM has those photos too. He looks grumpy, but he always looks like that.

There’s speculation that Liev cheated on Naomi (he’s rumored to be a serial cheater but I haven’t heard more than rumors) or otherwise forced her hand in some way, with some of you wondering if another woman is about to come out of the woodwork. Some of you commented that Naomi and Liev probably timed the announcement so that it would get buried amid all the news of the contentious Brangelina split. This was announced on a Monday night though, so they’re sending a clear message that it’s over but they also took advantage of the news cycle. It’s possible that they did it right before the Presidential debate on purpose too, so maybe we can’t read too much into the day of the week this was announced.

People Magazine has a insider-type story on what went wrong in the relationship, but it doesn’t have much additional information other than what was released in their statement and the fact that they’ve been having trouble for months. They may have split over whether to get married but if so it’s been a long time coming. Lainey reminds me that Naomi and Liev’s New York home was just featured in Architectural Digest earlier this year, which could have been a preview for a sale. Whatever went on with them, they kept up appearances, waited until their film was promoted and the the awards ceremonies were over and then split. They planned it out, suggesting that they’re going to keep this amicable and it wasn’t one thing that prompted a break. As good as it would be for gossip, I hope they keep everything on lockdown from now on.

US claims that Liev just gushed about Naomi in an interview a couple of weeks ago. It doesn’t sound like he’s gushing so much as saying how they make it work. He also praised her as an actress. They’re classy in public, whatever is going on behind the scenes, and they have a lot of love and respect for each other. This is just making me sad.

Also, maybe I’m conflating Liev with his Ray Donovan character, but he’s looked drunk to me a lot lately.
