In the minutes and hours following the release of the Access Hollywood tape, one of my first thoughts was “I bet there are more tapes of Donald Trump behaving deplorably.” My mind went to the idea that there was more proof in the form of audio and video tapes of Trump’s misogynistic views on women IN HIS OWN WORDS. It wasn’t until Sunday’s debate when Trump flat-out denied doing anything to women and claimed that his brags about sexual assault were “just words” that I thought “oh, that’s an open-ended invitation for every woman he’s ever groped, forcibly kissed, assaulted and worse to come forward.” Everyone in the press knew it too – it seems like every reporter has been primed for the onslaught of first-hand accounts of Trump’s deplorable actions and words. And here we go.
The NYT story. The NYT broke their exclusive with two women, Jessica Leeds and Rachel Crooks, both of whom say they were victims of unwanted physical contact by Trump. Leeds says that Trump sexually assaulted her on a plane nearly 30 years ago. Crooks says that in 2005 when she was just 22 years old, she introduced herself to Trump because their businesses were working together and he forcibly kissed her. You can read their stories here. Trump is already threatening to sue the NYT for this story.
Mindy McGillivray. McGillivray claims that Trump groped her ass at a Ray Charles concert in 2003 in Palm Beach, Florida. Allegedly, Trump just ninja’d his way behind her without Mindy realizing it and before she knew it: “This was a pretty good nudge. More of a grab. It was pretty close to the center of my butt. I was startled. I jumped.’’ Melania was there too.
Miss Washington 2013. Her name is Cassandra Searles and she posted to Facebook that Trump “treated us like cattle” and made the beauty queens “line up so he could get a closer look at his property.” She also says she has more to tell because “He probably doesn’t want me telling the story about that time he continually grabbed my ass and invited me to his hotel room.”
The People Magazine journalist. Her name is Natasha Stoynoff and she was sent to Mar-a-Lago to interview him in December 2005. Trump offered to give Stoynoff a tour of the property and when she agreed, that’s when “We walked into that room alone, and Trump shut the door behind us. I turned around, and within seconds he was pushing me against the wall and forcing his tongue down my throat.” Stoynoff says Trump had knocked her off balance and she felt “utterly violated.” You can read her full story here, and I would suggest doing so because it gets worse.
Trump Campaign surrogates attempted to blanket the cable news shows last night and defend Trump against the accusations. Trump has said that the more women who come out and accuse him of things, the more he’s going to go after Hillary Clinton… for her husband’s affairs and alleged misconduct. Which would be comparable if Bill Clinton was running for president, but since it’s Hillary… yeah, I don’t know. I watched as several crazy-sounding Trump surrogates threw everything but the kitchen sink at these new Trump accusers, saying that of course these women are lying, they’re Democrats, their stories aren’t believable, there’s no evidence and more. Then in the same breath those surrogates continued to mention Bill Clinton’s alleged misconduct, like the same thing couldn’t be said about those accusers. The cognitive dissonance is… startling.

Yes, I can believe that. I saw a clip of an interview with The Donald and Marla and their newborn Tiffany. He was chattering on about the baby’s looks (maybe in relation to Marla?), and mentioned something about not knowing about her breasts yet. A newborn and he was thinking ahead to puberty.
When someone complained about The Donald walking in on the girls in the dressing room at the Pageant, Ivanka just said that oh, yes, he does that – as though it were the most natural thing in the world in our culture. I suspect Ivanka wasn’t used to privacy when daddy was around. In some cultures, that may not mean anything. But in ours – well, you’ve heard the way Donald talks about his daughter and other women. That behavior is not benign for him.
and some of the girls he walked in on were as young as 15. he’s on tape telling Howard Stern that he can “get away with things like that” because he owns the pageant, and how “funny” it is.
it’s not just that he’s lecherous, he actively enjoys having power over women and making them feel uncomfortable. THAT is part of the turn-on for him.

With respect to Ivanka, and possible abuse, have any of you seen a clip from the Wendy Williams show (I don’t know how long ago; I myself saw it only this weekend), during which WW asks Trump and Ivanka what interests they share in common? Ivanka spoke first and said, “real estate, golf,” yada yada, and Trump immediately says, “sex.” Ivanka laughs it off but is clearly mortified. Ugh. I had to take a shower after witnessing that.

A major reason is that major news publication need to be able to check stories before publishing them. They might not be able to verify a story, but at least they would need to be able to do something like speak to the alleged victim. This hasn’t been possible. going in on this in a big way and having it turn out to be a hoax or something like the rolling stone rape story wouldn’t help Hillary or rape victims. I’ve posted it here before and I’ve mentioned it repeatedly.
I think the reason why the media hasn’t taken off with the Epstein story is because there are a lot of prominent men who attended Epstein’s parties… One big important one in particular, if you catch my drift :(.
Epstein was quite close to the UK’s Prince Andrew. I think some outlets are wary of this particular story because someone from the Jerry Springer Show is involved. I expect his supporters would find some way of excusing it even if he was found guilty. His focusing on Bill Clinton’s past is a sign of desperation.
This is just getting gross, I feel gross. My hope is that in the aftermath we can sift through the deluge and policy makers can have a real conversation about sexism.
There ought to be a conversation with young feminists and others who believe equality is a reality as well, whether women’s rights (human rights- thanks Hill) have been realised and whether we have a say over our own bodies. Big shock, I imagine.

I thought this country would progressively get better not worse. How did we end up in the dark ages in the year 2016? If he were to become POTUS, there would inevitably be civil uprising and regressing back to the days of no middle class, no equal rights, no rights for women, male dominance in the work place, other people controlling our bodies (abortion, birth control), etc. I cannot believe this is where we are in the 21st century of the third millennium. I think Hillary needs to throw some shade at Trump and his ego by saying he isn’t man enough to challenge the WOMAN running for President. He is so sexist that he thinks she’s just the little woman and that it’s her husband with the power. The husband is who he thinks is running for president. She can defeat him and refocus the topic on HIS wrong doing.
I think he shifted to Bill because he’s getting crushed by a girl- it’s personal. So this is his way of putting the little woman in her place. His rabid acolytes love this.
I think Trump going after Bill would be utter hypocrisy. And I do think there’s a lot of wisdom in TC’s idea that Trump’s focus on Bill is actually sexist.
But I still feel that Bill (and Melania) should be fair game. I wouldn’t want the idea that you can’t criticise the candidate’s partner to become standard. What if there were some future presidential race where the two candidates are both decent people but one happens to be married to a cheating-dog/lying-bimbo/some-other-negative? That would influence my opinion. No-one is responsible for their partner’s behaviour. But I would question their judgement in choosing that person as a partner.
Also, compared to other countries, the American First Lady/First Gentleman does play a fairly significant role. I’m Australian, and honestly wouldn’t have a clue of the names of any of my past PM’s partners, but I can name most of the recent American First Ladies off the top of my head. So they’re definitely part of the American image overseas.

The issues with Bill were thoroughly investigated in the 90’s. For years. It’s done. Nothing has come out since then. He’s 70, had a heart attack, and I doubt he continues to be a lech. It’s done. Hold it against Hillary if you wish but it’s done and none of it was or is her fault. Yet she is being blamed and guilted by association instead of focussing on her considerable gifts and abilities and experience, which is what Trump wants you to focus on.

@Kitten. Reading the last paragraph of your post, I suddenly realised I’ve misjudged the timing of my question. I can theorize because I’m sitting here in my safe little ivory tower in Australia. I didn’t really stop to think that Americans aren’t going to be in the mood for philosophizing at the moment. I’m only hearing bits and pieces of election coverage via CB and the news. It’s not all over my social media and at my work etc, etc. I still think it’s an interesting topic of conversation, but probably not right now, yeah?
As for the first half: yeah, political record is definitely more important. I shouldn’t have needed that pointed out, but I kind of did because we have a parliamentary system … their personal opinion on the issues doesn’t really matter here because you can be sure they’ll vote along party lines. You don’t have that same hard-core party unity in the US. And Trump might be running as a Republican, but he’s all over the place on the issues, so no political record is indeed a problem.
HRC’s marriage to Bill Clinton has proven to be a very bad decision IMO. Of course, they have a daughter they love but that is IT. If Michelle and Barack’s marriage is the dream, the Clintons’ is the oposite.
If Hillary had pursued her political ambitions on her own, people would have a different opinion and she would not have ended up in the many horrible situations she has.
However, an election is not the place to discuss these things.

I guess the issue I have with it is that this is the first time that we’ve seen a presidential candidate have her candidacy at times completely relegated to the misdeeds of her partner. Trump is on his third marriage, married to a mail-order bride* who lied about her college degree and plagiarized Michelle Obama’s speech. She certainly doesn’t make Trump seem any more appealing. Yet she has largely managed to stay out of the fray.

I have no problem about looking at spouses but Trump is bringing up old Bill Clinton cases that brought our entire government and country to halt followed by massive investigations. Then also a special prosecutor that investigated for years. Not to add the decades long investigation of the Clinton couple. There has already been no stone unturned in the Bill Clinton case.
Trump is not bringing anything new, it’s a clown show to distract from CURRENT charges against him. New information about him. Every time he is cornered he looks for a new distraction gimmick. He refuses to answer direct questions about his behavior and deflects to blaming others. It’s called a ‘Red Herring’ defense. Or see the distractions term “squirrel” from the movie ‘UP’.

The blinds are saying the leaks are coming from his own party which I find fascinating. They don’t want him as their party nominee but they don’t have the cahonas to say so up front and do what needs to be done in an honest forthcoming fashion. Instead they’re ‘leaking’ and making it appear to come from the opposing party. People think specifically, Mitt Romney is behind the leaks and offering up $5m for Apprentice leaks. I guess this is what happens to a party when that party has twisted the conservative view to the point that this is the man their party’s supporters want. It says more about the party and it’s supporters than it does about the Donald himself. They are so embarrassed and ashamed at what they’ve created, they can’t bring themselves to admit they want him out, so now they’re playing dirty with their own candidate. Crazy. Pure Crazy!!

Trying to draw parallels I already mentioned that the Australian PM partners don’t any attention (I don’t know any of their names), but we also technically have the British Sovereign as our Head of State, and boy does the media focus on the royal spouses! Also, down here, I’d say the media coverage of Michelle vs Barack is weighted about 30% to 70%. (Refection of the fact that US-specific politics aren’t international news. The events that are covered are the things like international tours and conventions. The First Lady is usually present at those.)

Can we gather up all these authors of said quotes and put them in a building and then bring all their daughters to this building and lock them all inside together and see how they still feel about rape and assault once their daughters have been exposed to it? Because, seriously, that’s what it would take to make that mindset see what they’re actually saying. It doesn’t matter to them because it’s not part of their lives, it’s no threat to them. Only when it affects them personally does it matter to them.

It seems scores of people have been aware of this behaviour for decades, and the people with the potential to put a halt to it have done nothing because TV ratings/profits, etc.
The women Trump has subjected to such appalling behaviour have had barely any opportunity for justice because of the ridiculous power imbalance.
I take my hat off to every woman coming forward with their experiences, or indeed, have decided not to. Either way, it must require an enormous amount of fortitude to deal with the challenges from going public or staying private whilst your abuser runs for the highest office in the country.
It’s actually relatively recently that such actions have been clearly recognized as sexual assault. It’s happened to so many women to varying degrees, and it never feels good and it always affects the way you think about the world. So yeah, it’s always been assault, but people didn’t put the word to it. Women often didn’t even talk about it with anyone but accepted as the way some men behave and there is nothing that can be done about it. Young girls often didn’t even have the words or anyone to tell, they just knew they felt bad after the encounter and didn’t know what to do about it. It’s much more open today.

No way. She has no self-identity. She has been with him long enough since she was young that she is merely Donald Trump’s wife. Did any of us even know her name before he ran for President? I didn’t. I though he was still married to Marla Maples. You have to realize Melania is a foreigner who hasn’t really assimilated to our culture. She has led a quiet undemanding life with Trump. She still doesn’t even speak English well. She didn’t further her education or learn any skills and her days as a model are washed up – she wasn’t in demand when she was at the prime age to model. She’s never going to move back to Yugoslavia, so what’s left for her but to stay where she is and pretend it’s all good. She also has a son that she wants to be brought up in America with all the spoils Trump can offer. And I don’t think Trump would let her go without a fight, especially with a child involved, not because he loves her, but because he would see it as losing, and if there’s one thing we’ve learned about Trump in all of this, it’s that even when he’s losing, he won’t step down because to him – that’s really losing – letting the other person win. I can only imagine the threats he’d make to her and the dirt he probably really does have on her. I keep saying it, but it seems to get poo pooed – she is basically a former Slavic prostitute. Sure, women come here from Russia and Yugoslavia and many other countries as aspiring models, but the reality is they supplement by “escorting” because they have no modeling contract when they come here. They have no means to support themselves. She would need to rely on him financially if she left and he would never let that happen. It was different with Ivanka and Marla. He was still young enough to be ready to move on to a different woman who’d let him be in control. He’s long past his prime now and much more public than before. If Melania left him, he would be humiliated and it would hurt his ‘brand’. She’s staying – it’s easier and she has no back bone. She’ll probably tell herself it’s all for her son, but it’s really for her because it’s easier and familiar. She knows how to do this life….even if it’s not a happy life.
Tawdry would be an improvement at this point. And for those of us – A LOT OF US – who have been violated in this way (13, breasts grabbed by 6’7″ classmate in front of six other boys to determine once and for all whether they were real; never told anyone then, classmate is now a registered sex offender for an act perpetrated 14 years later) are coming out of the woodwork. I have a friend who thinks Trump is getting more and more menacing and she is worried about Hillary’s safety. He certainly has whipped his supporters into an anti-Hillary frenzy (over lies). Is Hillary in more danger than usual?
That’s not an outlandish concern. Hope that her Secret Service agents are on high alert. Trump is an angry and vengeful man and attracts supporters who are likewise. I think that was why Hillary resisted the urge to nail him to the floor verbally in the last debate even though she could have if she wanted to do so. He’s really an easy target. In a recent interview (was it the New Yorker?), she says she goes to bed with knots in her stomach because of the responsibility she feels for winning this one. Other contests she may have wanted to win, but it wouldn’t be a disaster if she didn’t. She said that she feels she’s the only thing standing between us and the Apocalypse…. And in a real sense, she is.

Mr Mumzy works with a lot of Trump supporters who won’t be violent if he loses. (They will, however, dig their bunkers a bit deeper.) When asked why they continue to support Trump they *all* feel it comes down to one thing– “immigrants.” When they say immigrants, they mean Muslims. They are petrified that Muslims (=Isis) will not rest until they behead us (=not Muslims) all. They believe we are facing barbarians and our only hope for survival is to be led by our own barbarian. I guess that the more barbaric Trump seems, the more convinced they are that he is the right choice. They honestly believe that the outcome of this election is a matter of survival and that decency and respect are fripperies of civilized society that you cannot afford to consider when you are in a fight for survival.
Despite it being before noon here in Virginia, I need a big cocktail…or 5. And then I can dig my own bunker in which I can hide from the insanity. A bunker of drinks and Colin Firth.

KItten, as elated as I was the day after Obama’s first election, I couldn’t shake the fear that someone would try to assassinate him. It hasn’t happened so maybe we can be hopeful HRC can stay out of harm’s way. I guess what feels different is that unlike Obama’s two wins, HRC’s rise in the polls isn’t so much a reflection of the strength of her candidacy, but more so the weakness of Trump’s candidacy. I only have a handful of friends who are strong, unabashed supporters of HRC.
The one comfort I try to take in the fear I have about Trump supporters shooting stuff up when they are defeated in a land-slide….well, they are not smart. I don’t think whatever crap they do will be well organized. I know its not much, but these folks are not the brightest bulbs. AND, they are quickly becoming more marginalized by the day. This thing is turning in to a a freak show….if they do something, it will quickly be squashed. But probably not before they are able to do a least some violence, since they are well armed.

However, I believe the secret service has had to up the game for Barack, and they are ready for anything. Isn’t it frustrating that we have to worry about something like this? @Kitten, you have no idea who I am (a longtime reader) but when I read your post about having only a handful of friends who were ardent Hillary supporters, I squealed, “But I am, Kitten, you can count me!” because I read all your posts, and feel like I know you! ok, that sounds a little stalkerish. Anyway, both my wife and I and many of our friends in the Silver Spring MD area are staunchly for Hillary.
Very unhinged. Visit some of the “prepper” websites – they have whipped themselves into frenzies, stocking up arsenals for the revolution that will come IF Hillary is elected.
I still think we’re heading into a Trump-win, very bad sinking feeling.

THIS! The first time I voted was against Reagan. Plenty of politicians, journalists, academics and union organizers at the time saw this coming and helped young people like me understand that Reagan was put in place to kick off a plan to poison our democracy and strengthen authoritarianism and heterosexism. I’ve asked myself SO many times if it’s because she’s a woman, mainly because I like to be as objective as possible about sexism and I don’t want to assume or jump to conclusions but yeah…..it’s sexism. It’s misogyny, double standards, and good ol’ fashioned sexism.

Trust me, you haven’t seen anything yet. We had our first female PM in Australia a few years ago, and the misogyny and aggression was astonishing. She skillfully managed a minor government and passed more legislation than any other PM, but she was always derided as “hopeless”, “incompetent” etc.
Yet the UK now has it’s second female PM with nary a peep of criticism about Theresa May’s hair, voice, dress, family, weight, etc. But the onslaught Julia Gillard got was shocking. Look up her “misogyny” speech on YouTube.
JESUS. That is disheartening.
Why the difference in attitude between the two countries?
It shocked the hell out of me. I’ve had to completely adjust my understanding of my own country. Like in America, the misogyny was fuelled by a right-wing opposition (a turd called Tony Abbott) and a couple of older male ‘shock-jocks’. They whipped our ‘low information voters’ (older, white, rural) into a frenzy over a few non-issues, like a carbon tax.
I don’t think the difference is cultural – it is likely the fact that both the UK’s female PMs were conservatives (and therefore less likely to scare the horses), whereas ours was a red-headed leftie unmarried ‘child-less’ atheist.
Kitten – seriously, if you want to watch a THING OF TOTAL BEAUTY, search Gillard and misogyny on YouTube. Whenever I want to cheer myself up, I watch that speech.
(Theresa May is getting a bit of this. Actual broadsheet commentary about her love of kitten heels, for example. But absolutely nothing on this scale. On the other hand, if you want to see a bit of misogynoir, just look up Diane Abbott, a prominent black UK politician. Also, as noted, lefty.)

Actually, sitting thinking about it, Kitten, there is one difference. No religious right to speak of in the UK (except Northern Ireland) and I don’t think in Australia either.
So we have the general misogyny but not the efforts to pretend rape isn’t rape, restrict reproductive choices, etc etc etc. Those efforts are very much fringe interests here.

The GOP has been actively cultivating the worst kind of racist and misogynist elements within their base for 8 years now, and now they act shocked – SHOCKED! – that this is what they’ve ended up with.
They’ve also been delegitimizing Obama’s presidency from the get-go (remember “you lie”?) and encouraging stupid conspiracy theories and mistrust in everything the government does. Now half of America thinks the country is going to hell, even though it’s doing pretty well across the board in economics, crime, health etc.

This election is the first time you can see writ large the consequences of the decline in newspapers and investigative journalism in favour of ‘clickbait’. If Watergate happened today, it would never have been uncovered because serious journalism is no longer profitable.
I disagree with you about the media. The stories have been there, but 37% of the Republican primary voters (which is generally his share of the vote) just DID NOT CARE. The stories about his business dealings have been out there forever. The Washington Post, in particular, is doing exhaustive work on his lack of charitable contributions, despite his protests otherwise. The NYT did an article about his treatment of women, including the Alicia Machado stuff, back in May. The media has done its job. They can’t make things up. They have to have sources willing to go on the record. They have no right to access tapes from the Apprentice or subpoena his tax returns, etc. Someone has to leak them and they have to authenticate it or Trump has to release the stuff. And as far as the women go, similar to Bill Cosby, once a few people come forward, others feel embolden to tell their story too.

agree…he’s going to threaten and bluster and get his base riled about suing that “liberal rag” NYT, but as someone said (can’t remember where I saw it), the statement put out by his lawyer is “what you do to pretend to your client that you’re going to do something about it but then do nothing” (or something like that.)
I think, in the past, his threat to sue has been enough for people to back down, but the NYT has witness statements and they’ve been in the game long enough to know when to run a story and when to NOT run one for lack of sourcing.

This might’ve been mentioned here already, but apparently some Trump supporters were on Twitter calling for the 19th amendment to be abolished after learning that if there were no female voters, Trump would win. It’s nice to know how divided our country is, how bleak these times truly are, and how many citizens of our country want to regress. We now have Vladimir Putin so invested in getting Trump elected that Russian officials are coming straight out and admitting that they not only hacked the DNC emails, but that nuclear war is on the table if we don’t elect Trump. This is where we’re headed as a country? Electing someone who is chummy with Putin? For every step we’ve taken forward in recent times, I feel like we’ve gone back about a million. I’m beginning to feel like I need to stay away from the news because I can’t take anymore of this bullshit.

But then I woke up this morning and saw this on CNN. They were asking a Republican about it and he said pretty much, what does this have to do with him being President? Then he mentioned Clintons affairs and the lady goes he not running for President and the guy has the nerve to say well, they’re a team! What hypocrisy. She goes why aren’t you as mad at Trump as you are Clinton? That was awesome! Then a Utah senator says they will be voting blue, for the first time in 50 years! This election has been crazy and it’s really made me aware there is so much racism left in the world. Here’s an example: my husband went to the liquor store to get us some liquor. But it was late and he couldn’t find any open. So he stopped by some hole in the wall bar. He peeked in and heard someone say “crazy nigger.” So he’s like this is not a good place to stop. So he stands outside, thinking about giving me a call and this woman comes out and tells him the customers are worried about their cars. He’s like my car’s over here, but she couldn’t see it. So anyway, he gets in his car and as he drives off he hears someone setting their car alarm. Obvs, my husband is a. It just breaks my heart some of the stuff he has to go through. He came home and told me about it and he said I can’t take off being black. I had no idea how much racism there is still left in this world, I’m white and it breaks my heart.

Juanita Broaddrick has twice signed affidavits under pains and penalty of perjury that her story of assault, the very one she’s pushing now, was nothing but a nasty rumor. Like many others have said, I am genuinely amazed that there are female voters who remain vocally supportive. Granted, I am not trying to overthink it or allow myself to become overly frustrated (because I’ve lived long enough to know anyone so defiant with this much plain evidence is beyond convincing).
Based on the women interviewed the past two days who actually defend him and dismiss his words and the allegations, my opinion is that some (maybe a lot) may have been deeply rooted in a situation, such as having crappy male relatives, social climbers with cheating husbands, etc.
Trump is a pumpkin. Orange on the outside. Hollow on the inside and needs to be thrown in the trash in November.
The child rape allegations are even more disgusting. Finally, it’s starting to get more attention. A woman has filed a suit that Trump violently raped her at age 13 in 1994 after she was lured to a party in Manhattan promising to help her find modeling work. There are witnesses. The party was “thrown” by a known pedophile.
