The second ‘Wonder Woman’ trailer looks pretty amazing too, right?

WW3

I want to feel like it’s a good omen for Hillary Clinton that the new Wonder Woman movie looks so awesome. Granted, I’m super-depressed about the state of the country and I’m trying not to check FiveThirtyEight every five minutes, but it has to mean SOMETHING that Wonder Woman is here, right? That we’re getting a badass, stand-alone superheroine who can face down a rain of bullets and still be standing there, ready for to kick ass? Please give me this.

Anyway, the first trailer for Wonder Woman was released at Comic Con several months back, and it was genuinely a great, interesting, feminist trailer where Diana/WW looked and seemed powerful, cool, strong, confident and independent. Now they’ve released the full-length trailer and… it still looks really good.

The main thing that worries me is that some of us are still thinking about that open letter to Warner Bros’ CEO Kevin Tsujihara, which was published on Pajiba in September. The open letter was written by a former Warner Bros employee who blasted the company for repeatedly sh-tting the bed with their franchises and big-budget movies. WB’s film slate this year has proven that WB can cut some good trailers which end up showing the only charming parts of really awful movies. Think, Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, which introduced us to Sad Batfleck. Think, Suicide Squad, which cost tens of millions of dollars just in reshoots to “fix” some terrible problems which should have been caught in pre-production.

So, will Wonder Woman live up to the promise of the first two trailers? I really hope so, because I’m genuinely loving these first looks at WW. I think Gal Gadot was a good piece of casting… so far. And I don’t mind Chris Pine either – the way he screamed “Diana!” with real urgency made my heart go thump-thump-thump.

This trailer showed everything, gal is good for action but the film still very much looks cold.

Ugh these costumes are horrible; we now have a film that is supposedly celebrating heroins and femininity and yet all I see is their boobs. Speaking of it; did you know that Amazons used to cut one of their breast so it would be easier for them to fight and shoot arrows? Yeah, I know it’s based on a comic and that’s where her styling gets from, but if you’re making a film about empowiring women and female heroes than just stup making every emopowering woman just sexy all the time.

    • detritus says:

Is that a for real thing that happened?
I mean boobs are not good for archery, but that seems a little extreme.

On the movie note, I do not like Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, she’s too slender and obviously chosen for hotness. I am very willing (hoping even) to eat crow on this, like when I horse eyed Anne H as Catwoman and she turned out excellent.

      • Clare says:

Hardly extreme – given the other ways in which women’s bodies have been modified and mutilated over the years, removing 1 breast to improve a specific skill doesn’t seem quite so extreme in context I think?

      • detritus says:

I’m thinking with the surgical methods they had, it would be worse than the time most ladies on my swim team got nipple rings. And then couldn’t keep them dry, because you know – swimming. Twas not a good month for breasts that month.

Asceptic technique was not strongly supported until Lister and Pasteur got on board.

Like chance of surviving removal of a breast? And maintaining full function of the muscles underneath and mobility of the skin etc? I’m thinking too hard about this now. It could not have been real.

    • Hannah says:

@ds Comic books were made for boys, so all girls are weak donzels with huge boobs. No boy is paying to see a girl with minus one breast, so expect much boob action.

      • WendyNerd says:

“Comic books were made for boys, so all girls are weak donzels with huge boobs” That is such bullshit stereotyping. There are tons of AMAZING female characters in comics. Judging all of one medium is a slap in the face to female reader, writers, artists, and characters.

Yeah, they’re not going to CGI a woman’s tit out. So obviously it’s because comics are just big-titted boy things!!!!! *glances at copies of Batwoman, Ms. Marvel, Princeless, Batgirl, Wonder Woman Rebirth, Captain Marvel, Spider-woman, Spider-Gwen, Lady Mechanica, Squirrel Girl, Storm* Yup. All girls are definitely weak “donzels” with huge boobs alright.

Wonder Woman was specifically made for girls, BTW. The creator of Wonder Woman was a bondage-obsessed crazy person, but her point was to deliberately empower women and celebrate femininity.

Stop erasing us from the narrative. We’re half the comic buying audience (yes, statistically, we are). There are women behind the counters of comic book stores, women writing, and awesome female characters. The more people perpetuate this “comics are for boys” bullshit, the fewer movies we get starring the characters we love.

    • ds says:

@hannah; you’re totally right; I know; I just wish they’d stop targeting women with this.
@detritus; I remember from history books that the historians were actually debating a lot about it. First there was this theory that the name itself originated from the Greek meaning; without breast; which would also explain some writings from Roman Era historians. However, other group fights this thesis saying there are no paintings or other visual evidence of it; but they do confirm that their right breast that was supposed to be cut is always covered while the left breast is usually naked. I find it interesting. They were like female Spartans so it makes a lot of sense to me. In these days their story and attitude towards it could be used in empowerment; like, my gradma who had cancer and had to loose one breast would also tell me she was an Amazon now….

      • detritus says:

Your grandma is a friggin Queen.

Amazons and wonder woman inspired my early years of getting mad at people for calling me a princess as a compliment, It’s queen, or empress or gtfo.

I could definitely see nipple removal, just shooting an arrow feels like you’re taking those off. The whole shebang is a big job though.

      • ds says:

You go Empress! I like Empress; sounds elegant and tough at the same time 🙂

    • V4Real says:

@ds I think Gal’s costumes are not revealing her cleavage. Lynda Carter costume was more revealing and that’s years ago when it wasn’t popular for women to be exposing a lot. Why don’t I read any complaints on here about the male superheros who are constantly exposing their muscular chests to appeal to their women audience. I remember women on this site complaining that Black Widow costume in the first Avengers movie was too tight, yet no one complained that Hawkeye leather outfit was just as tight. Such a double standard sometimes. Sometimes we tend to get a little too nickpicky.

As for her lack of muscles I also complained but Diana’s gift doesn’t come from her muscles it comes from her magical gift bestowed on her. I just hope the movie does well.

    • Chinoiserie says:

Are you seriously just believing the stuff ancient Greek writers wrote about the Amazons to make them really alien before writing how some Greek hero killed them (Amazons always loose in these stories in the end). Modern historians do not even think Amazons excisted, there is some evidence that the women of the area could fight but that is it, there was Amazons and no all women society and all the stuff about breasts cutting and they killing their male children are just completely made up. I am astonished that in this day and age you could believe in these myths.

      • ds says:

Well myths are stories and tales ergo the are not facts; however if you base another storyline on the already existing tale or myth than it would be cool to not be scared and take some of the most interesting parts in. And yes; there have been so many speculations on the subject of where the Amazons as the tribe have existed and it’s still uncertain. That’s why there are myths. Some of these people actually did exists and it’s a historical fact. How they were kept alive in storytelling is another thing. And I absolutely love Greek mythology that’s been a big inspiration to so many art expressions but also religions. What’s wrong with that?

      • detritus says:

        @ ds
there’s so much that we are unsure of with those time periods. which is why it’s so interesting, isn’t it?
Greeks practised a form of damnatio memoriae also, where they wiped out the names of offenders, and altered historical documents so there is much we still may discover. Plus so many cultures did not use written language to carry on their history.

They are still finding tribes in the Amazon basin, pyramids are still being discovered in Egypt. It’s making me want to be an archeologist/anthrologist again, just thinking about all those mysteries.

    • Pam_L says:

I’m really looking forward to seeing this Wonder Woman film. I hope people remember it is a film based upon a classic comic book heroine. Other than the fact of DC Comics notorious faded color pallet, the outfit Gal Gadot wears is really no different from the outfit comic book Wonder Woman wore and no different from the outfit Linda Carter wore in the Wonder Woman TV series. Wonder Woman is an Amazonian Princess. Think about the short togas young women are wearing on classic pottery. 🙂

    • The Recluse says:

That whole slicing off a breast thing is likely a very old tall tale. The Amazons: Lives and Legends of Warrior Women across the Ancient World by Adrienne Mayor covered everything that was told in the past and has been explored by archaeology since. Very interesting book. However the ‘real amazons’ were not big boobed glamazons such as once encounters in all the comic art. I think the costume they have Gadot in probably creates the illusion of her being hefty on top. She looks rather lean in real life.

    • sticker shock says:

Well, these are DC’s amazons, which are different. Real amazons didn’t live on a magical island, have immortality, or guard Doom’s Doorway, either.

  3. Cool Character says:

Gal isn’t a good choice for wonder woman.

Too skinny and she is so wooden.

    • Clare says:

I thought she looked fantastic – beautiful and strong.
To be fair I’ve only seen the trailer and haven’t seen anything else with her in it…

      • Katherine says:

I found her fantastic as well, I think she’s supposed to be kinda ‘wooden’ as in ‘otherworldly’

      • MissMerry says:

I think she looks great. Feminine but not dainty. Her arms and shoulders are strong and badass. I did think her legs looked a little thin/not enough muscle in batman v superman but other than that, I think she will be a great Wonder woman…

      • Pam_L says:

I think Gal Gadot is like 5-feet, 10-inches tall so that might explain why her legs look a bit thin. I think she looks svelte and athletic.

      • V4Real says:

Also people are forgetting that WW strength didn’t come from her being muscular, it was a magical gift. In the modern comics she even flies. Do she need muscles to fly, no it’s a gift given to her by her creator.

    • Sunsetsnow says:

She looks great to me! Very excited for this!

    • hogtowngooner says:

I wasn’t wild about her when she was cast, but she was very impressive in Batman vs Superman, even with little screen time. I’m excited for this!

      • Orias says:

Do you ever feel like last time, drifting through the trailer, wanting to start again
Do you ever feel already waiting glee, exciting under scores but no one turnout truly good
You don’t have to feel like wonderful
If you only knew what the future holds
        After theatres have a Snyder
Do you know that there’s still a Zack in there
        ‘Cause there’s a full-edit still

    • Diana says:

      She’s so freaking bland

  4. Neelyo says:

I like it a lot and have watched it several times already. But I haven’t seen many of the recent comic book movies so my point of reference may be off. But I like the WWI setting, the villains looked interesting and I don’t know how to describe it exactly, but there was some emotional investment. But it’s just a trailer/commercial so who knows.

I still don’t really know the difference between DC and Marvel.

    • Grant says:

Two different comic universes. Think of it this way: the Marvel characters (Iron Man, Thor, Black Widow, Captain America, Scarlet Witch, Spider-Man, etc.) exist in one comic universe and the DC characters (Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, the Flash, Aquaman, etc.) exist in another. Their stories do not intersect or overlap.

  5. Mia4S says:

Please be as amazing as it looks! Please be amazing as this looks!

I was sold with the last trailer, but the alley scene where she stops the bullet? I’m going twice minimum. 😊

    Loving Chris Pine in this!!

  6. Margo S. says:

Can i just remind everyone that this film is being directed by a WOMAN! THAT IS HUGE! Regardless about how it turns out. We all have to go see it, opening weekend, in theatres. We have to support films directed by woman about woman!!!

  7. Lucretia says:

Kaiser, your anxiety about next Tuesday is palpable and shared. Articles are being written about how women are shaken by this election for more reasons than political choice, experiencing triggers with the violence of the vitriol toward HRC. Wonder Woman feels like self-care in this moment. I don’t care who’s playing her, how many boobs she has, or how wooden the actor. I’m with you — and I may need to have this trailer cued up to watch along with election returns!

  8. tracking says:

I was not sold on the first trailer, but this one is great!

  9. Sam says:

Gal Gadot’s acting will be the reason why this film gets wrecked by critics. She looks the part perfectly though and the visuals are fantastic but thats it.

  10. Jess says:

    Awesome. I needed this today.

  11. Thaisajs says:

I couldn’t believe how many little girls I saw dressed as Wonder Woman this Halloween. Can you imagine how many there will be next Halloween?

Trailer looks awesome. I loved Wonder Woman as a little girl. I can’t imagine this movie being as bad as that cheesy 70s TV show (which I loved anyway). Gal was the only watchable thing about that Superman/Batman movie. I’m super excited about seeing this now.

  12. smd says:

I will go pay to see the movie and buy some memorabilia, know why? Because I want to and I can and will show support for one of my favorite superheroes/heroines of all time! That’s right Celebitches, this Nasty voting women will be putting her $ towards this new trend! I can and will influence my environment (right?) !

  13. Irene says:

Looks awesome. But so did Suicide Squad, so….

  14. sodapop says:

I’m so excited to see this movie! I don’t care if some people think she looks “too sexy” or whatever…I’m just glad that we have a female superhero movie directed by a female director. Baby steps. And I personally think the actress looks amazing…why can’t superheros be slender. I mean did that skinny spider man actor really look like he can swing a 20m trailer around (like in the last avenger movie??).

  15. Alldamnday says:

My 8 year old said “why are there so many guns in this one?” about the new trailer. My friend said “it takes place during World War 1”. I said “The studio had to put in a lot of men and guns so men and boys will go see it, they don’t want them to be confused.” I’m happy it’s being made, WW was the best part of BvS, but that trailer did not excite me for the film.

  16. karen2 says:

…Its hard to root for WW because she problem solves via magical devices which imo is the resort of the hopelessly powerless…Bats n Ironman use their brains to create bits n bobs to help problem solve…but what do I know…
