Andy Cohen: Taylor Swift mean-girl’d Katy Perry at the Met Gala

I go back and forth on whether I actually like Andy Cohen. Sometimes, I think he’s a gossipy bitch after my own heart. Other times, I just find him absurd with how he manufactures drama. I can’t even decide if I think he’s a good interviewer. He’s better than most, but that’s setting the bar pretty low. Cohen isn’t merely a producer and talk show host though – he’s also a dishy author. His latest book is Superficial: More Adventures from the Andy Cohen Diaries, and it’s out this week. Several outlets have excerpts and… some of the stuff is just weird, throw-away gossip. But I did enjoy the Taylor Swift story. Some highlights:

The Taylor Swift story:
Cohen recounts that when at the Met Ball this year with Sarah Jessica Parker, whom he attends the event with every year, he had a brief run-in with Swift at the bar. According to Cohen, the “Shake It Off” singer was searching for a spot to watch Lady Gaga’s performance when Cohen noticed an open area by Perry.

“Why I felt I needed to get involved I will never know (maybe I was auditioning for her squad?) but I innocently said exactly the wrong thing to her, which was, ‘Your friend Katy is sitting in the corner and there’s plenty of room around her,'” he recalls. Cohen says Swift then asked, “Katy who?”

“I said, ‘Perry,’ at which point she clearly let me know that she’s the exact opposite of her friend,” he continues. Cohen says he then tried to make light of his misstep, which led Swift to instruct him not to mention this on his show. “She didn’t threaten me about putting it in my book, so here we are,” Cohen quipped, adding that he failed his “squad-ition!”

His Jennifer Aniston story. He was having a drink with John Mayer when he noticed several Friends stars having dinner nearby, following their appearance at a tribute to James Burrows. This was years after Mayer and Aniston had broken up, and Cohen writes: “We realized they had to walk by our table to leave and that would be a ‘moment,'” Cohen recounts. He decided to instead greet the cast, but Mayer did not join him. “As much as I would’ve loved to see the ultimate reunion — Aniston and Mayer — we left before they did and went to bed. Separately.”

“Katy who?” Oh, Swifty. Never stop being that high school Mean Girl. You know, KATY PERRY, the same Katy that you wrote “Bad Blood” about. The same Katy Perry that spurred you convene the largest friend collection just to “show” her who is more popular? That Katy Perry.

What else? He said no to Oprah not once but twice! Once when she asked him to do Where Are They Now?, which seems bizarre (because he didn’t go anywhere) and another time when she invited him to brunch and he had a flight to catch. I don’t know, if Oprah asks you to brunch, you should probably change your flight.

    Oh please!! He baited her.

  2. sweetpea says:

Andy was totally stirring the pot – that is actually what he does. And he is making a wonderful living doing it. And he is good at it! He knew exactly what he was doing when he suggested Taylor sit with Katy – everyone knows they have beef..

  3. detritus says:

To be rich and famous enough to turn Oprah down.
I’d be like Liz Lemon on the plane with fake Oprah, if I met real Oprah. She also looks like she gives awesome hugs and brunch sounds like a great opportunity to maybe get Oprah-hugged.

    • Otaku Fairy says:

I was thinking the same thing.

    • Emily says:

Where could he possibly be going that’s better/more important than brunch with Oprah? Who wouldn’t accept that excuse?
“Oh my god! How could you miss my wedding!”
      “Oprah invited me for brunch.”
“Oh, wow….I guess I get it.”

  4. bros says:

and taylor being extra controlling about not talking about it, because she wants to have it both ways and be an actual B$tch but act like she’s the sweetest thing ever to the public. gag.

  5. Clare says:

I want to like him, but he’s made a career out of baiting, stirring, and promoting the myth that women are bitch*s to each other. that makes me sad.

    • Pedro45 says:

This. You don’t have to be a Trump follower to be a misogynist.

    • AnneC says:

I’ve read both his books and he had a serious career for awhile. I just can’t with the Real Housewives BS anymore and his getting rich and famous with the “women be crazy bitches” agenda. Not doing our country or social discourse any favors. Now we have a real life reality star as president of our country. No thanks.

    • Tourmaline says:

Yeah I used to be a big Andy Cohen fan but I’ve gone off him big time. I liked his first book Most Talkative, but the second book (Andy Cohen Diaries) was an annoying repetition of him getting massages, hanging out with SJP, etc. etc. Don’t know if I’ll bother with this new book.

    • valkenburg says:

I dunno…you don’t need to do a whole lot of baiting to get women to be bitches to each other. Look at how utterly bitchy women on here are towards either of the Middleton sisters, or any white, thin actress.

  6. Margo S. says:

I love me a gossipy b!tch Hahaha. Don’t like him as a person, but the fact that he doesn’t give a eff and just tells stories about celebs with no shame is amazing.

Taylor Swift is the worst. Grow up clown. You’re 26 ffs.

  7. jerkface says:

Thats fun entertainment right there. Reading this makes me miss Joan Rivers from the 80’s and 90’s. Andy doesn’t mess with people who haven’t signed up to play. That I know of anyway.
I can picture these stories in my head, its more old fashioned gossip style rather than rude speculation and I like it.

  8. me says:

He stirred the pot with Taylor…I don’t think he should be spilling all these stories or he won’t ever have celebs on his show again.

  9. Alleycat says:

Of course he stirred the pot with Taylor, that’s what he does! The mature thing for Tay Tay to do would have been to politely decline or say she already found somewhere else with a smile. He wouldn’t be able to say anything about her response then because it would have been boring. I love how she told him not to mention it on his show. So controlling, how exhausting.

  10. QueenB says:

“Cohen says he then tried to make light of his misstep, which led Swift to instruct him not to mention this on his show”

    good that he didnt!

  11. Janey says:

So what? I say mean things all the time. If T Swift wants to be a “mean girl” go ahead.

    It could be worst.

    • Jade says:

Right? Nobody likes 100% of the people they encounter that’s just being human. I find it odd that just bc someone is famous they must be devoid of real human emotions.

      • kimbers says:

..remember all those blinds years back about katy partying hard with the drugs and drink? Before she even had a record deal she met richies partying and lived on their property bc ppl loved having her around for her energy. She’s the opposite of taylor and they dont get along…no bigs. 2 different peoplr living their life….maybe katy feels taylot is too judgmental and taylor feels that katy doesnt care about much..

  12. Alyce says:

This isn’t even being a “mean girl.” He was trying to start something and barely got a story out of it.

    • Sarah says:

Exactly. I disagree that this was a mean girl incident.

    • Lindsay says:

I am glad you thought so too. I read it on another site and the headline was about Taylor’s “amazing burn” or something. I read the story and thought maybe it was a tease to get you to buy the book. That something else had to have happened to make this a story worth writing about in your book, it is barely worth a few sentences in a personal journal (if you’re the type of person who does that). It isn’t like he said Beyoncé, their could conceivably be another Katie/Katy there. Even the reporter conducting the interview that resulted in Mariah Carrey’s infamous “I don’t know her” specified Jennifer Lopez. If this is a featured highlight the book must be insanely boring. Just because a story features a famous person does not automatically make it fascinating.

  13. huh says:

    How old is this “man”?

    • Sunshine Gold says:

Seriously. He seems bizarrely childish – especially for a wealthy, successful man. Like he doesn’t have anything better to do? If the book is dishing this level of “gossip,” it sounds like a total dud.

  14. kimbers says:

That guy is the male chelsea handler

  15. MellyMel says:

Ha! I love Andy! He’s forever stirring the pot! He also brought Nene into my life with her shade throwing so I will always love him! 😊

  16. nikko says:

This has nothing to do w/ Andy, but since there’s a pic of Sarah Jessica Parker I wanted to say I thought she was finished w/ tv series. She is on the HBO series Divorce. I was thinking well she should of came back as Carrie on Sex in the City (since she wants to do another series) and got a divorce from Big. I really miss that show and the other women too.

  17. K says:

I find it a little strange that this site hasn’t written anything about Taylor’s ongoing sexual assault case. It’s certainly easy to make her a villain, but does that mean we should ignore the fact she is also a victim in this situation?

    • Babs says:

I agree. And I hate Taylor with a passion but what happened to her is awful and should be covered everywhere.

  18. Sunshine Gold says:

He’s not a great interviewer, he’s just friends with many celebs so he gets people to talk because of that. Ellen is similar. Are you going to let down your guard with Savannah Guthrie or the guy you were having drinks with on Saturday? (Or your friend was.) It’s called access and it changes everything.

  19. no says:

Oh please. I hope you just read the snippet instead of listening, because he made clear in the podcast that he was the snarky one, not Taylor.
