Star: Gigi Hadid is being Mean Girl’d by the other Victoria’s Secret models

There’s so much that I’m not looking forward to in the coming weeks, months and years. One of those things is the Victoria’s Secret Christmas show on December 5. Vicky’s is going hard with the Instamodels, even at the expense of some of their more established models. The idea, I believe, is an attempt to rebrand Victoria’s Secret as the go-to brand for teens and young women who will be influenced by seeing Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid in cheap lingerie and wings. I came of age in a time when Gisele Bundchen and Stephanie Seymour were Victoria’s Secret models, so this development upsets me. As it turns out, the other VS models kind of hate it too. Or, at least according to Star, other VS models sort of hate Gigi Hadid.

The prettiest people can do the ugliest things – just ask poor Gigi Hadid, who finds herself totally shunned by her fellow Victoria’s Secret models.

“They’ve frozen Gigi out,” says a VS insider. “They’re jealous over her silver-spoon upbringing and how easy she’s had it – they’ve been slaving away for years, but she dates a couple of pop stars and boom, she’s an It Girl? They’re over her.”

But for some reason, Bella – who dated The Weeknd – is getting a much warmed reception at the annual lingerie show.

“She’s been given the industry stamp of approval because she’s naturally much skinnier and more ‘high fashion’ so the girls accept her,” explains the insider.

And despite the smiles you’ll see strutting down the runway on Dec. 5, Gigi’s peers weren’t hiding their contempt for her during rehearsals.

“Gigi is convinced she heard one of them making horse noises and laughing at her backstage,” snipes the source, adding that the other Angels were just as mean last year. “They call her fat and overrated.”

[From Star Magazine, print edition]

Part of me thinks this is crap, and another part of me thinks it’s totally possible. I think of Gigi Hadid as one of the popular girls in the celebrity ecosystem – she bridges the divide between Taylor Swift’s squad and the Kardashian-Jenner family. Her career is growing by leaps and bounds and she keeps getting major magazine covers and contracts. But maybe all of that is the reason why she’s unpopular among models. They see her success as undeserved. But why like Bella and not Gigi? Bella has a more editorial look, for sure. But as far as talent and nepotism, Bella and Gigi are at the same level.

Also: “Gigi is convinced she heard one of them making horse noises and laughing at her backstage” – I believe that’s about how Gigi stomps on the runway. They’re not saying she looks like a horse. They’re saying she walks like a horse.

We’ve heard the mean girl story from either her of Kendall’s camp at almost every big show show that they’re in. WE GET IT! The other models don’t take you seriously (because your walk is still atrocious and it’s been years*ahem*).

    • als says:

I think the articles are the problem. Instead of turning around and putting those girls in their places when she hears them making horse noises, she complains about them in these planted articles.
Gigi and Kendall became famous on IG and expect IG to solve whatever problem comes their way.

    • Nicole says:

At this point you would think they would get some lessons to improve their atrocious walks and personality (or lack thereof) on the runway. I mean they are both awful and yea I can’t say I wouldn’t be annoyed either.

And I think it is true because wasn’t it last year that a few models dropped out because of their hiring?

      • jinni says:

I believe it was that Jourdan Dunn was booted out to make space for Kendall or something like that.

      • Ayra. says:

@jinni, yeah she was. I was hurt for her, I love Jourdan and they decided to take her out last minute for Kendall.

    • teacakes says:

I honestly think these ‘mean girl’ stories are at least partially fabricated/exaggerated by the instamodels’ own camps for the sake of social media sympathy.

(i.e. look at poor me, hated by pretty people! who can’t actually speak up in their own defence!)

  2. jferber says:

I don’t see how Bella is “naturally” skinny and high-fashion because I’ve seen the before pics–pre-nose job and pre-skinny. I can’t get upset over Gigi’s “problems.”

  3. Victoria says:

So does that mean more annoying tweens and teens will be shopping in Vicky’s? They already took over Sephora! 😡

  4. huh says:

    It’s all the hunger.

  5. Kate says:

It’s not a bad move for VS. They make very basic designs in really cheap fabrics, and their bra sizing is extremely limited. Once upon a time a range of colours and designs was enough, but these days there’s so many wonderful options for lingerie. VS is best suited to younger women who can’t afford the nicer brands but still want something cute. Whenever I see a VS store it’s filled almost entirely with teenagers, and it’s about time they’re marketing caught up with that.

    • Alleycat says:

It is a bad move. Kendall and Gigi, while popular with the young crowd, do not translate to sales. Last year, when those girls walked in the show (and VS replaced more senior models for them), the company received the lowest viewership in almost a decade.

      • ol cranky says:

@Alleycat did the sales dip as well?

      • Alleycat says:

Yes, their sales have decreased. They’ve had to drop their swimsuit line, which was huge for them before, because of poor sales. I believe that’s why they brought in the Instagram models last year, hoping it would help but it has not.

      • Nicole says:

Yea bigger models (I think Dunn was one?) dropped and didn’t Rihanna pull out of the show because of it? And the show was a mess and had lower viewership like others have said. They dropped their suit line this year
It’s fine VS sucks and the only time I buy stuff there is if someone gives me a gift card

      • WeAreAllMadeOfStars says:

Correlation doesn’t equal causation. VS has been in financial trouble for years. They’re changing branding strategies in an attempt to save themselves, just as Vogue transitioned to celebrity covers after the 90s supermodel craze died down and now uses the likes of the Kardashians.

      • Suzie says:

@nicole, Rihanna couldn’t have pulled out because of this as she hired herself Gigi and Bella for her Puma line.

    • M.A.F. says:

Overall their sizes are off. According to them I’m a 32 DD (which I still doubt). I’ve been wearing VS since I was a teenager but I need to find a different brand. I’ve been told to go to Nordstrom since they size better.

  6. Ellie says:

What?! I’m not buying this precisely because they’re supposedly not doing it to Bella. Both girls have the same upbringing, Bella definitely has big fake boobs and, given how much weight Gigi has lost in every area but boobs, I don’t know if I believe she hasn’t either. I find Gigi way more beautiful and if one of them has anything horselike about her, it is not her. I just don’t get don’t what people see in Dead-eyed Bella at all.

    • minx says:

Agree, I think Gigi is cute and has an expressive face–although I won’t spend time worrying about her “problems.”
I can’t see past Bella’s nose job and her mopey posing.

    • Lindsey says:

Bella might be a bit more humble. She was clearly her mom’s least favorite and her mom did lots of petty things to make the pecking order clear on camera. I can’t imagine what it is like when they are off camera. It was obvious to the point that several RHoBH recappers referred to them as GiGi and not-GiGi. She went all out with buying and decorating an incredible apartment. Bella was given much less consideration. She definitely didn’t force her friends to paint art work as part of a mural for the wall. Her mom likes to do things like “accidentally” write the names of people she likes larger or draw hearts by their names and while it may be a great trait in a reality tv star (drama!) it isn’t a great way to parent. Little slights add up, death by a thousand paper cuts.

She refers to her son as ‘king’ but even his name was written smaller than GiGi’s with less decoration on the envelope that held her will.

  7. Alix says:

Gigi may be an Instamodel but I think she’s got the goods. Bella, unfortunately, is nothing more than a morose wax figure.

    • Nameless says:

Haha yeah, her expression reminds me of an old antidepressant commercial with the sad lady in a bathrobe sits forlornly on the sofa.

    • WeAreAllMadeOfStars says:

Yes, I don’t understand the comment that Bella is editorial. She’s nothing. Say what you will, Gigi has an interesting face. I can’t believe how bad her voice and acting skills are in that makeup commercial I keep seeing on Youtube. Just shut up and let people take your picture, babe.

      • Em says:

Yeah, I do think Gigi is very attractive and even has a little bit of the ‘it’ factor – she’s very charming and sort of radiates health. It’s a nice change to be honest.

I don’t see anything editorial in Bella, that was a weird remark. She’s just meh, even with the surgery.

  8. smd says:

Oh no poor Gigi! Such 3rd world problems right now.

  9. Mel M says:

Boo effing hoo. Honestly? That girl and all the rest of her group lead charmed lives so I don’t feel sorry for them at all.

  10. Louise177 says:

The same story comes out about Gigi and Kendall every time they do a show. I never followed modeling but knew the names and faces of many of them from the ’90s and early 2000’s. Now I don’t know any of them. Only Gigi and Kendall because they are covered so much. I only know Karlie Kloss’ name because of Taylor Swift but wouldn’t recognize her if she knocked on my door.

  11. MellyMel says:

Yeah, I don’t believe it. A lot of the VS girls are in Taylor’s squad and are good friends with Gigi. She also had a good chunk of them walking in her Tommy Hilfiger show. I would believe it more if this was about Bella since this is her first year walking in the show.

  12. laulau says:

Victoria’s Secret is a terrible brand.
They’ll pay millions to put this stupid show on while they were relying on American prison labor to make their product.
Last year there were charges that women working on there production line were forced to wear diapers to avoid leaving for a bathroom break.
Since so much cotton is linked to slavery (look up Uzbekistan) they are probably guilty there too.
I get we all buy questionable stuff (like the computer I’m typing on) but nothing will ever change when we give these companies a free pass. When we will obsess about mean-girl models but ignore human rights abuses… Actually, this misdirection might be Victoria’s greatest secret.

  13. Redgrl says:

Bella looked like Jennifer Meyer pre-nose job.

  14. Sam says:

Is Gigi considered an Instamodel though? I thought to be an Instamodel you had to have become famous through Instagram. She didn’t become famous/big because of Instagram. She became famous/big because of her connections and because of her father being a billionaire. The Instagram followers came after. Having that said, everyone at some point in time in their life is given something because they have connections. Gigi got her foot in the door, connected with the right folks and hasn’t stopped running since. You can say the same thing about other big names too and not just in the modeling industry.

    • MellyMel says:

This! She’s a nepotism model, not an Instamodel. And there’s nothing wrong that. If I had those connections and wanted to be a model, I would take advantage of them as well. I don’t get why people are so bothered by that. A lot of ppl would kill to get their feet in the door in whatever profession they wish to have.

      • Sam says:

Exactly. It happens in every profession. Connections get you places. Gigi isn’t the first person to use her connections and she won’t be the last. Like you better believe when I graduate from medical school I’m going to be calling up all my family friends who are doctors.

  15. Boxy Lady says:

Wait. Isn’t Bella skinnier because she’s been ill with Lyme disease? That’s kind of gross, even for the fashion industry. “Just lose weight. We don’t care how.”

  16. nicegirl says:

I love Gigi – she can take ’em, too. Remember her smacking the heck out of that ridiculous dude who attacked her? The other models are JELLY, lol

  17. Suzie says:

I don’t believe this story. Most people in the industry love Gigi.
I like Gigi as a model, more than I used to anyway. Kids love her too – Kate Moss recently said that Gigi is her daughter’s favorite model. Nepotism is everywhere, especially in Hollywood, I don’t see why it’s a bigger problem with Gigi.
Plus if Gigi and Kendall weren’t bankable, companies would not invest in them. It’s all about money.

  18. Kath says:

I’ve got to laugh at the idea of some models having ‘credibility’ and others not. They’re models! Their entire function is to bring attention to brands and sell stuff. While nepotism bugs the hell out of me in professional settings (politics, office appointments etc.), I get its appeal in the fashion industry (even if I disagree with it). A recognisable “name” brings more attention and probably shifts more product.

The modelling/fashion industry is messed up, in any case, when you have 14 year old girls selling high-end stuff to grown-ass women.

  19. Amanda says:

Victoria’s Secret has been for teens and tweens for years. They have a whole brand and store called “Pink” for the youngs. It’s not a new development.

  20. jerkface says:

The other models are just mad these new crop of girls were connected enough not to have to put up with the gross casting guys and creepy photographers and mean old fashion hags who’d sooner sacrifice them for their young blood in a bazar witching ritual than hire them for even a Betsy Johnson or Rampage campaign.

  21. Skins says:

They better be careful, Gigi will beat the crap out of them

  22. Em says:

Frankly, the modelling industry isn’t exactly a meritocracy – you’re born with the looks or you’re not. Doesn’t matter if you’re rich, poor, whatever. I’m not a Gigi or Kendall fan girl but I have nothing against them and I don’t think they ‘deserve’ their career any less due to their backgrounds. Honestly, if I was a designer trying to appeal to young people, I’d probably choose a model with name recognition and a fan base over some random Eastern European 15 year old. Let’s not pretend modelling is anything more than it is – sure you need some street smarts and grit but it’s not exactly preparing for the bar. I think Gigi and Kendall both have the healthy, glowy VS look in any case.

As for Bella being considered more model-esque than Gigi, lol. That girl looks 15 years older than she actually is and her face is half plastic. Not as sad as Kylie but clearly another instance of the less pretty little sister feeling jealous and trying to one up her big sis. Nope. Bella is bland AF and has dead eyes.

  23. Lin says:

A person should be able to go their job, do their work and not have insults hurled at them! Yes ok she’s an IG girl/celebrity…..she’s still a human being.

  24. Lynn says:

She sure did mean girl Melania though. Just stupid.
