Iman: Michelle Obama ‘is not a great beauty’

Michelle Obama Visits U.S. Mission To The UN In New York
Iman gave an interview to Parade, and she’s claiming that First Lady Michelle Obama is “not a great beauty” but is merely “interesting looking”. It’s actually a backhanded compliment, because Iman is talking up Michelle’s brains, and saying Michelle has much more going on for her than her looks. Iman might have said it differently in that case, but I get what she’s saying. She’s saying beauty doesn’t stick around, and wouldn’t you rather have better qualities? This coming from the immortal beauty of Iman is bit rich, though.

As people across America fall in love with the grace and style of the First Lady, Michelle Obama, it might seem odd at first to hear any negative critique about her always flawless appearance.

But for Iman, the 53-year-old supermodel and wife of David Bowie, Michelle is more than just a pretty face.

“Mrs. Obama is not a great beauty,” Iman tells Parade. “But she is so interesting looking and so bright. That will always take you farther.”

Iman, who could easily pass for 40 with her glowing skin and gorgeous smile, thinks looks can be totally overrated.

“When you’re a great beauty, it’s always downhill for you,” she explains. “If you’re someone like Mrs. Obama, you just get better with age.”

If “going downhill” involves looking like Michelle or Iman, sign us up!

[From OK! Magazine]

I find myself agreeing with Iman – I don’t consider Michelle Obama beautiful because of her looks. I find her beautiful because of the whole package – the looks, the intelligence and compassion, the fact that she’s a great mother and wife. I’d add to those compliments that Mrs. Obama is one of our “hottest” first ladies, which seems to appeal to a certain male demographic. The evidence? Michelle placed 93rd on Maxim’s Hottest Women in the world. For the record, Michelle is way hotter than Olivia Wilde. When describing why Michelle placed on the list, Maxim editors wrote: “President Obama may be dealing with two wars, an economic meltdown, and a rapidly graying dome, but at least our Commander-in-Chief gets to come home to the hottest first lady in the history of these United States.”

Iman is shown on 5/12/09 and 5/4/09. She is also shown with her husband, David Bowie, on 4/30/09. Credit: WENN.com

That headline is pretty misleading. When I read that article and read the first part, I thought wow, that’s harsh, but then she went on to say that what Michelle Obama has is better because she only gets better—classic “great” beauty at a young age is something that you just lose and who wants that?

  2. Cinderella says:

I really like Iman, but this just didn’t translate well. Oops.

  3. texasmom says:

I have to agree, though, Michelle Obama is not a “classic” beauty in terms of her features. But she IS beautiful and CLASSY. She has that same Princess Diana thing where feature-by-feature she wasn’t super beautiful, but she had some undefinable charismatic oomph. Michelle has that same oomph! Her personality sparkles.

A friend of mine met her about ten years ago (before all this fame) and her overwhelming impression was that Mrs. Obama was very physically imposing — lots of presence.

  4. daisy424 says:

“… hottest first lady in the history of these United States.”

Jackie Kennedy hands down still wears that crown; beauty, class, brains and style. She didn’t seek publicity and eschewed the press, especially when it involved her children.
I have yet to see a First Lady since then come close.

  5. Darya says:

How is her remark relevant to anything? Is being some kind of “great beauty” a requirement to be a First Lady, to function in society, to succeed in life? Very shallow and superficial remark by this Iman individual, not worthy of the attention it seems to be getting.

  6. me says:

    she isnt

  7. nina says:

i’m surprised iman said anything like this. it isn’t necessary to rate other women on their beauty.

    iman — it’s what’s inside that counts.
you should know better than to be so shallow.

  8. vicsmith says:

Daisy said it best. M. O. doesn’t come close in any category.

  9. Tia says:

    she isn’t is right.

  10. sandy says:

how do you know she’s a great mother?
Hate the word “hottest”- any catch phrase from paris hilton needs to be buried

  11. Hieronymus Grexx says:

    Classy.

  12. Iggles says:

Daisy, it seems like the men of Maxim disagree with you. Overall, if it was put to vote this would be further validated.

As much as people love to hate, it doesn’t change the fact that Michelle Obama has displace Jackie O.

    Mrs. Obama has the crown.

  13. Wow says:

The thing with “physical beauty” is that it really IS in the eye of the beholder. Some will feel Jackie O is a beauty, where as some will think her eyes are/were too far apart. Iman is beautiful on the outside whereas some things about her character can leave a lot to be desired and demotes her physical beauty.

    Michelle has the whole package.

  14. goaheadandyellatme... says:

What greatly bothers me the most about this, is that is one more example of a woman denigrating another woman. It would have been so easy to leave the fisrt statement out of the quote and just to say, ” She has so many qualities…”. But, as usual, she had to get her little dig in first. Women must stop doing this to each other. If we just cut out the catty crap, we would rule the world!!

  15. anonymous says:

I completely agree Michelle naturally isnt a physically attractive person. It’s her intelligence, charisma and amicability that makes her attractive. Her inside qualities far outweigh her physical, thats what i believe Iman was trying to say.
Besides she’s been First lady for less than a year I dont think she has the “crown” in anything.

  16. I Choose Me says:

Some of you clearly didn’t read Iman’s entire quote. She did not diss M.O. and in my opinion, what she said is spot on.

  17. Correct says:

    M. Obama is NOT a great beauty. Why does the American press have a need to only celebrate women as “hot” and “beautiful”? Just because they love Michelle right now, they are trying to make her out to be this great style maven, this great beauty, etc. She is an attractive woman. But great physical beauty she ain’t. Nor is she a fashion genius. People need to stop celebrating her for what isn’t really there and celebrate her for what counts. What is important and wonderful is that her husband loves her and she him, that she is a great mother, and that she has poise.

  18. Bina says:

Michelle Obama or Carla Bruni? I know who I’d want as my First Lady. Although my country had Benazir Bhutto, who had brains AND beauty – the best combination.

  19. TaylorB says:

The comment from Iman really was a compliment. 99.99% of the world will never be a ‘great beauty’ in the purely physical sense like Iman, no matter what we do. But that is really neither here nor there, everyone eventually sags and gets wrinkles. But to be bright, kind and thoughtful will always beat out the pretty airhead (I do not mean Iman per se)in the long run.

  20. NJMDPS says:

    well……she’s not.

  21. jenn says:

    Smart? Yes, I’d say.
    Beautiful? No, pretty average.
Good mother? Kids seem to like her.
Compassionate? How so? Didn’t seem to be doing a whole lot philanthropically until the husband became popular. Seemed to be making good money and even better money when the campaign started.

Obviously, there’s more than meets the eye. Can’t buy into all the media hype and quite frankly we may never be privvy to finding out what these folks are really like since so much of image is a manufactured art…

  22. Rosanna says:

Well, it’s crystal clear Michelle Obama is not a beauty! One would think that whether a First Lady (or a President) is a beauty or not, it doesn’t *really* matter. I don’t get the fascination for this woman’s “beauty”, I don’t get it at all. But I don’t think she is less of a First Lady because she’s not beautiful.

  23. Liv says:

    She’s not

  24. daisy424 says:

@Iggles, “..As much as people love to hate,…”
Was that directed at my comment?
I was referring to Kaiser’s comment at the end of her post where she wrote first ladies.

I agree with Sandy & Jenn regarding this statement by Kaiser,
“.. the fact that she’s a great mother and wife…”
That is an opinion/assumption not fact.

  25. bros says:

iman likes to give the backhanded ‘compliments.’ she gave one on heidi klum a while back about her not being a runway model, didnt she? she certainly is full of opinions.

  26. miss x says:

Agreed, IMAN was SPOT ON. Michelle is NOT attractive. If she were at Jewel, picking out plum tomatoes, I wouldn’t give her a second look – She has run of the mill plain features, and thats life. Not everyone is born an exquisite beauty, some of us have to rely on attitude, personality or personal style to accent the natural beauty that each of us have. But totally on looks, michelle is about a 4.

  27. Tess says:

Jackie O. became a style/beauty icon over time.

Her aura of mystery and her actual disdain for politics contributed to her persona.

Michelle, on the other hand, shares her husband’s political ambitions and seeks out the public stage.

Jackie wanted the privacy to lead an extremely aristocratic existance out of the public eye.

Comparisons between Michelle and Jackie are pretty superficial. There’s more to Jackie’s image than pearls, sleeveless dresses, and bouffant hair.

  28. Teddy says:

Eleanor Roosevelt was an awesomely cool first lady and she wasn’t a classic beauty, but who cares? She was very intelligent. Carla Bruni looks like a wet nappy; Jackie O was too skinny (no cushion for the pushin which is why JFK had to do Marilyn Monroe; Michelle is allright, though I would like to hear some witty quotes from her.

  29. Annie says:

Compassionate? How so? Didn’t seem to be doing a whole lot philanthropically until the husband became popular.

I believe she did participate in quite a number of philanthropy projects, it’s just, no one cares about the regular folks who do things. They only care when you become somebody.

I thought Iman’s comment was complimentary as well.

@Iggles, “..As much as people love to hate,…”
Was that directed at my comment?

@Daisy – You really need to get off this whole notion that everything mildly negative is targeted at you. This victim mentality is getting tired. How self-important…

  30. Tony says:

She’s a legend in her own mind.

  31. Dingles says:

Iman really should have left out the beauty comment altogether…it definitely was unnecessary. I guess it’s to be expected since she herself is famous only for her looks, so that’s the only marker for worth she’s ever known.

Also, why should it even matter if Michelle is or is not a “great” beauty? You would NEVER hear people say about a male president, “Well he’s not that handsome but boy is he a good president!” It’s just stupid.

  32. daisy424 says:

Teddy, Poor logic to blame Jackie that JFK was a player/cheater.

  33. HUH? says:

“Jackie Kennedy hands down still wears that crown; beauty, class, brains and style. She didn’t seek publicity and eschewed the press, especially when it involved her children.
I have yet to see a First Lady since then come close.”

    in the same thread as…

“I agree with Sandy & Jenn regarding this statement by Kaiser,
“.. the fact that she’s a great mother and wife…”
That is an opinion/assumption not fact.”

and so is your post about Jackie Kennedy, so don’t state it as such.

  34. geronimo says:

@Annie – Iggles ‘love to hate’ comment comes directly after she’s contradicted Daisy’s opinion re MO being the hottest. It’s perfectly rational that Daisy would conclude it was aimed at her. You’re the one coming off as irrational here.

Wish people would leave their differences on the threads where they occurred. 🙄

Iman’s right, Michelle O is not a great beauty, but she makes up for it in style, personality and general all-round feistiness. And she’s got an amazing smile. This is just the media sensationalising something for the sake of it.

  35. ChristinaT says:

i never thought michelle was all that great looking… actually, she kind of scares me. she was lucky to snag obama… but does she have to be? good looking i mean? there’s no law that obligates human beings to be born good looking… bringing it up is absurd… she’s the first lady for chrissake… show her some respect.

  36. TaylorB says:

Seems like enough people find her beautiful that this is for some reason an issue, as they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Keep in mind that Barbara Bush, Lady Bird Johnson, Hillary Clinton, and countless other first ladies were not exactly Elle models either and while there were some digs at them people in general showed a bit more respect for than to run from website to website calling them ‘ugly’ etc. It is really in poor taste.

  37. CandyKay says:

TaylorB, people were more than unkind to Nancy Reagan. But that was before the Internet.

And certain elements of the press and public – both far right and far left – were absolutely vicious to Eleanor Roosevelt back in the 1930s.

Anyway, my mother met Jackie O. during a campaign stop in 1960, and was not impressed. She said she had very little presence, and terrible skin.

When it comes to great first ladies, no one will ever beat out Dolly Madison. Charm and brains and guts and wit. And she saved a famous portrait of George Washington when the British were burning the White House!

  38. daisy424 says:

@Huh? Your analogy is laughable. Enlighten us, where did I use the word ‘fact’ in my comment regarding Jackie?

I stated my opinion and the opinion of; Hillary Clinton, Ted Kennedy, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, Joan Kennedy, Pamela Harriman, Gloria Steinem, Ted Sorenson, her mother, lifetime confidante Nancy Tuckerman, her sister Lee and from one of the people that knew her best, her son JFK, jr.
Check the oral histories housed in the Kennedy Library or the book ‘As We Remember Her’ if you’re still a skeptic.

@Annie, I expected you to jump on me sooner. Iggles adressed me in that post, I wanted clarification, is that okay with you? Pot calling the kettle with your ironic claim.

    @ Geronimo, spot on, thanks!
What happened with FB? I changed my icon back to my husband & myself, he’s wearing a blue VW T-shirt that says Das Fun. Barneslr signed up a few days ago. Please try again, most of your CB friends are there.

  39. mE says:

Correct and Jenn, are spot on. No she isn’t a great beauty and beauty ain’t everything.

There is no way on earth she has unseated Jackie O. Maybe she will in time but 4 months into the presidency? Sounds like someone’s judgement might be clouded by the probable fact that you share her political values.

  40. CC says:

I wouldn’t say Michelle is beautiful or pretty but she definitely falls in the line of attractive. I like her style. And she has a fit body unlike past first ladies. Jennifer Aniston falls into that catergory as well- Attractive, but by no means a great beauty. Naturally great body though.

  41. DiMi says:

Well, our president certainly seems to think his wife is a great beauty. He’s always staring at her with moon eyes.

Iman sounds like a petty, mean girl. It’s an awful thing to say. How many women want to be told, “You’re not beautiful, but you’re smart and interesting looking so be satisfied with that. Bye, I’m off to shoot the cover of a magazine.”

Why would she say something so petty? Iman will regret that comment.

By the way, I DO think Michelle Obama is a great beauty, she’s just not a conventional beauty. Two different things.

  42. DiMi says:

Also, take another look at Jackie Kennedy, she also wasn’t a conventional beauty. Her elegance made her a great beauty.

  43. Iggles says:

Wow Daisy, you’re demeanor is coming across like you suck on lemons all day. I find your posts on this subject very negative.

You and I have a difference of opinion over the “crown”. I, like many other Americans, feel she surpasses all the first ladies in having the full package — brains, beauty, style, presence and diplomacy. This is why she wins the crown. I also think she has been the prettiest.

I think Eleanor Roosevelt has been the smartest and advocated the most impressive policies. I think Hilary was the ambitious with regards to politics.

  44. CC says:

Hillary Clinton and Barbara Bush were attractive as well. I would never think they were ugly, at least on a physical level. But, they didn’t have the fit body or style of Michelle.
Jackie O was pretty, a step above Michelle Obama but I wouldn’t call her a “great beauty” either. I’m not sure why there is all this focus on a first ladies’ looks. It doesn’t matter one bit.

  45. Margo says:

@texasmom – i know what you mean. Mrs Obama may not be a “classic beauty”, but as cliche as it sounds, her inner beauty is what makes her gorgeous. She just has a thing. It’s hard to explain. For example: Brendan Frasier – not really my type, not classic handsome, but as the character Rick in “the Mummy” he is frickin’ hot. He had a thing. Michelle has that – confidence, intelligence, a great smile, amazing style, a sense of humor, compassion, class etc… she’s just a fine role model for women and people in general and that makes her beautiful. I’d take her over Megan Fox any day.

  46. daisy424 says:

@Iggles, sorry to come across like that, it was not my intention.
It was the writing/slant of the article, opinion, not fact. See mE’s comment, he/she said it best in the last sentence.

I think Michelle is very smart, has confidence, appears to be a strong woman. IMO, she is attractive, but not a great beauty.

I do however agree with you on E. Roosevelt and Hillary, spot on.

  47. TaylorB says:

    CandyKay,

I freely admit that there were digs on previous first ladies, and in Mrs Reagans case most were on her rather caustic personality not her looks, my mother met her on several occasions and confirmed that she was quite the ball buster in person especially when it came to anything to do with her husband, which I totally respect. And I think we can all agree that Hillary Clinton was also raked over the coals from time to time. I just think that in this day and age, with all the websites ect. providing a shroud of anonymity people show very little respect for others. Instead of attacking someones (one either side of the aisle)policies or stance on issues it is ‘she is ugly’ which is a sad commentary as to how vitiated our current political climate has become. I am sorry if I didn’t make my point clearly in my first comment.

  48. HUH? says:

laughable? why is it that whenever someone disagrees with you, or points out a possible contradiction in your statements, you get your panties in SUCH a wad?

Let’s be clear…I never accused you of using the word “fact”. but you didn’t have to, due to how your initial post was phrased.

“Jackie Kennedy hands down still wears that crown”

with the term “hands down” (meaning “no one can argue THIS”), that comes off like you perceive that to be FACT, and is stated as such. “hands down” in the common language means “indisputably or unquestionably”. doesn’t sound like you were expressing an opinion.

so, though you didn’t use the word “fact”, you used a different term indicating that your statement can’t be argued.

“Wow Daisy, you’re demeanor is coming across like you suck on lemons all day.”

see? I’m not the only one to notice. now go take a valium, would ya?

  49. Iggles says:

Daisy, thanks for clarification. When we type, sometimes others can’t pick up our intended tone. It’s the same thing with text messages.

HUH?, yea I said that. But she cleared it up so I’m not gonna drag it out. She and I are gonna agree to disagree.

Honestly, I don’t think of the first ladies look like stunningly over the top gorgeous, but I feel Mrs. Obama has the same charisma Princess Diana had and then some! Not only is she the prettiest of the first ladies, but she seems like the most likable and well rounded of all of them.

    *************************************

Jacqueline Onasis may have been very rich and was once the first lady, but in MY opinion, whe was not beautiful; not only that, she could not keep her man from “fooling around”. Oh, did I mention that she used vulgar language?

Mrs. Obama is very attractive physically and personality wise; she is also intelligent; but the media focuses on her outfits and not her accomplishments.

Mrs. Obama has a loving and devoted husband and beautiful children who love and adore her. She was loved and raised by both parents, along with her millionaire older brother.

@ the hater who wrote “the kids ‘seem to like her'”; you are so pathetic. Malia and Sasha love and adore their parents.

It really bothers many that this is a happy, loving family. Get used to it, as they are not going away.

  52. Carry says:

Iman is not a beauty either. She has 0 room to talk.

    ************************************

About 10 years ago, Mrs. Obama was pregnant or had just given birth to their oldest daughter. About seven years ago, she was expecting their second child. So, what women doesn’t gain weight and have to “work” it off AFTER giving birth? What is your point?

  54. Trillion says:

Iman fkn rules. I worship her size 11 stilettos.

  55. texasmom says:

SoccerNana — I don’t think she was pregnant when my friend met her, I was just estimating about when it was. It was before she was at the U of Chicago Hospitals. She told me she was physically imposing — she’s REALLY TALL!!

  56. anastasiabeaverhausen says:

There’s only one person that this should matter to and that’s her husband. I’m QUITE sure he thinks she’s a great beauty inside and out, and who cares what anyone else thinks?

  57. Trillion says:

Agree with above statement. Except that I always care what Iman thinks. She brings out my inner bitchy fag. Overhead circle and two snaps!

  58. Giz says:

Iman is no great beauty herself. Neither was Jackie Kennedy (no disrepect to the dead). I’m always interested as to how people determine what beauty is. Is it measured by to how close one is to having more “European” features or having by not having too dark skin color?

I agree that Michelle Obama is not beautiful by European/White standards. But face it, you can’t take your eyes off of the woman!

I had a friend who was told that because she was beautiful and because she was beautiful, she couldn’t be all African American. Then of course, instead of just leaving it alone, she broke into what percentage of heritage was European (which was at two generations prior). It was almost as if she was demeaning the A-A portion of herself!

  59. ChristinaT says:

soccernana, stop getting your panties in a bunch. i think you’re misinterpreting everything everyone is saying because you’re on the defensive… why i don’t know why. you’re not related to the obamas are you?
i didn’t think so. so don’t take it personally.

  60. Dirty Martini says:

I always did like me some Iman.

Girl’s got game. And taste. And she’s oh-so-right.

THe Obama-bots on this site are really starting to annoy the dickens out of me.

Michelle Obama is not a beauty. Sorry, folks, but she looks like a linebacker.

    And badly dressed one.

  61. Bridget says:

I don’t find Iman the least bit pretty, and she’s far from beautiful but she is tall and thin.

FLOTUS is cute, but her smile and actions make her very beautiful.

  62. cara says:

I think what Iman was trying to convay is, it is obvious, Shelly is not physically attractive and no, she does not have a booty either- it looks waaaaaay too jiggly and much too loose, BUT she is an exreemly intelligent and highly achieved women and The White House should be pushing those extreemly admireable traits out rather then , “Wow! look at how polished and stylish ‘Shell is!” and “Look how American she is, she’s wearing J.Crew!!!” What they should be throwing in our faces is how far she went in the business world (to the top) and how much she attained scholastically. Those are tremendous achievements and should be lauded.

    that’s all I got

  64. Sunny says:

It’s entirely unfortunate that the very standard that considers Iman a ‘great beauty’, leaves Michelle Obama, and countless others, out permanently.
Who sets the ‘classic beauty’ standard?
People who look like Michelle Obama? No.

Iman tried to clean it up, but it was a nasty slam by someone I think is basically jealous.
She’s only considered beautiful because whites don’t find her features threatening, how dare she put down another black woman to impress them?

  65. revel87 says:

michelle obama is not a great beauty..or even that attractive. these comments regarding her being a beautiful person because she’s first lady, wife, a mother, intelligent, blah..blah..you people don’t know her and have no idea what she may really be like. she, like every other public figure has a public ‘face’. iman was referring to objective physical beauty. that being said, i agree with iman.

  66. barneslr says:

Iman is absolutely right. All of you who are arguing that she is, to you I say that if she weren’t famous, if you just happened to see her at a grocery store, you wouldn’t give her a second look. She’s not ugly (although IMHO she has a very hard face), but she is not physically a beautiful woman. That’s not being mean; it’s just true.

  67. Codzilla says:

Annie: You’re accusing someone else of being self-important? LOL! I’ve yet to detect even a shred of humility in any of your posts, on any topic.

  68. drm says:

A lot of these arguments show how shallow much of society is these days. Michelle Obama is beautiful because of who she is… That was Imam’s point.

As you get older and go through all the crap life throws at you unless someone is literally deformed you do not ‘see’ outward appearance the same way. Beauty, to borrow that old cliche truly does come from the inside. And some of you who are commenting are pretty darn ugly…just the tone someone uses and the way they speak about others can render them immediately unattractive, both physically and intellectually.

  69. Sunny says:

Honestly, I think the bulk of comments re: Michelle O, are at least partially based on race. A black woman can’t be considered beautiful unless she is, or looks biracial. Sad, but somebody had to come out and say it, while everyone else dances round it.
No one for a second stops to think about the fact that she’s being judged by a standard that was never meant to include her, and these people would never admit to those standards being racist. Black women don’t have pointy little noses and crisp features, it doesn’t make them unattractive.

But Michelle’s having the last laugh on this one. One of the smartest men in the world thinks she’s beautiful, in fact, he pursued HER, she’s loved around the world, and when kids look in history books, it’s Michelle Obama they’ll see, not Iman, or any of the other haters.

  70. Lake Summers says:

Lets not be too nice guys, michelle is repulsive and what she thinks of america is even more disgusting. Why so hunched over michelle?

  71. AC says:

    @ Lake, get a life!

Michelle is beautiful, charming and intelligent and the Obamas are here to stay!

You wish you had one ounce of her class in your little pinky!

  72. Ursula says:

To each their own but we all come from different races and what is beautiful for a black person may not be for a white person. I found J.O classy but rather plain. Not a great beauty at all. I find Michelle very beautiful and mesmerising. My husband calls her his secret crush. But who cares about these things, ever heard of beauty being in the eyes of the beholder?

So what did you want her to look like? Meg Fox or whatever, I find such looks plain.

See that’s funny, because I found her to be rather pretty, but lacking in class. After all, she was essentially a prostitute, hence her marriage to Onassis.

  74. barneslr says:

“and the Obamas are here to stay!”

Only for a little over 3 years, unless we are able to get him impeached and removed from office before then.

  75. barneslr says:

“Honestly, I think the bulk of comments re: Michelle O, are at least partially based on race.”

Yeah, I guess Iman, the 100% Somali woman is racist against Obama.

    That makes lots of sense.

I think, aside from a few idiots (and sadly, there will always be a few idiots), the majority of the “racism” problem in the US is imaginary. Yes, it was a terrible issue once upon a time. That time is over. We have a black president. We have people of different ethnicities in all areas of our society–political, entertainment, and in general. The only ones I EVER hear making racist comments are the ones who are angry because something didn’t go their way and they cannot fathom that there could be any other possible reason. People like Sharpton and Jackson are perfect examples of race-baiters; if they don’t keep stirring the pot and searching for reasons to become offended, they are out of a job. For some, it is in their own best interest to try to perpetuate racism, or at least the perception of racism.

Get over it. No one cares about color anymore. We care about who people are and what they do, not the color of their skin. And as for the beauty issue-again, be reminded that it is a 100% African woman who made those comments, not a person of mixed race. Oh, and yes-Iman, in all of her African glory is a stunningly beautiful woman.

    So much for your argument.

    LOL,

Let me guess, one of Sarah Palin’s minions? Or a Ronulan(Paultard)?
Sounds like you’re on the wrong site, you may be happier on Redstate, or Free Republic, big with the tin foil hat crowd.

I won’t even address your hopelessly stupid analysis of my post, and race.
I’d assume you were talking out your arse, but where would that leave your mouth?

    Oooohhh…you really told me!

If only it were that easy to erase centuries of abuse. When Barack Obama was born less than 50 years ago, black people could not vote, and in places some were being hung from trees just for looking at white folk the wrong way. It will take time for such memories to fade in the minds of the people who lived through those days (on both sides of the divide), some of whom had no choice but to pass that legacy of fear to their children and their children’s children.

President Obama was not elected for his colour, but simply because he was the right man for the job. The fact that his ethnicity is repeatedly remarked on is proof that it is an issue to some.

It’s wonderful that you feel the way you do about race and I hope that as time goes by more people grow to feel that way too, but to dismiss the inequality that still exists in American society and can be seen clearly by the rest of the world really does you no credit at all.

Regarding the post, I personally don’t think Iman was insulting Mrs Obama. She was just expressing an opinion. In any case, if she was to say the moon’s made of cheese, would that make it so?

  79. daisy424 says:

Flora, it’s been almost 140 years not 50.
The 15th amendment was passed in 1869 and ratified in 1870. This gave all men regardless of color, the right to vote.

@Sunny, You opened that can of whoop ass not barneslr, who is a regular on this site.
Your analogy is typical of Ms. Garofolo; High on hate, low on facts.

Is anyone Moderating on this site anymore? Multiple posters?

    barneslr and daisy424,

Unfortunately racism is still alive and well, and although human chattel slavery in the U.S. ended 150 years ago, voting rights didn’t necessarily follow until well into the 1960s. I am part of a multiracial family and we hear and experience racism in many big and small ways in our daily lives, from my little 6 and 8 year-olds being called “niggers” to being told that a house I could have paid for outright was something “you can’t afford.” Just because you are not yourself experiencing, witnessing, or engaging in racism yourself doesn’t mean that it isn’t out there.

In my family, we don’t really identify ourselves to ourselves by race, other people do it for us, all day, everyday. Thank god our country has the ability to change and improve itself, this is what I love most dearly about the United States. Things have definitely improved over my lifetime. The things I used to hear in Chicago politics even in the 1980s are just mind-bogglingly racist compared to what our public life is like today. It is thrilling to see this progress. But there is still more progress that needs to be made.

Are you kidding me? Jackie O was and is still the hottest wife in Presidential History. She had the brains, the skills and she had this mysterious charm that everyone fell in love with. Even now people cannot put their finger on what it was that was so mesmerizing about her.

Michelle isn’t particularly beautfiul but she’s smart and I guess now a days (since most people are idiots) that’s a quality people are intrigued by. Like they can’t fathom that a woman can be so intelligent.

  82. sharon says:

jackie o was beautiful but she was rich, not smart. she got a degree in french, she was pretty, had a good sense of style, and married well… wow what an accomplishment!

iman comes from a rich family and is pretty.

michelle worked her way out of the projects by good old fashioned hard work. she graduated cum laude and went on to get a law degree from princeton. i’m sorry but michelle has 10x’s the moxie, intelligence, and flair than jackie o and iman combined. but since hotness is all we’re talking about here, then yes, a 5’10” strong, accomplished black woman is not as hot as a model and a socialite… thank god she never aspired to be!

  83. Freya says:

I agree with Iman. MO is very tall and quite big, and not a great beauty. I’m sure she does her best to look nice.

Jacqueline Kennedy is, in my opinion, the best-looking of the US first ladies.
She has great style, and speaks French too.
