Gigi Hadid announces month-long break from social media

Gigi Hadid announced that she is breaking up with social media. Although, because it is only for a month, she and social media will just be on a break so social media can sleep with the copy-shop girl if it wants to (wink and nudge to the Friends fans out there). Gigi, who was a part of Reebox’s #PerfectNever panel discussion in New York on Wednesday, claimed she will be off Twitter and Instagram for one month to focus on herself and her career. What’s more, she thinks we should all do the same because everyone takes a side in a breakup, don’t they?

Gigi Hadid is going through a breakup (no, not with Zayn.) The “social media” supermodel says she’s splitting from Instagram and Twitter for a month around the holidays to focus on herself and her career.

“It’s not only for people in the spotlight, it’s for everyone,” the 21-year-old star told PeopleStyle at Reebok’s #PerfectNever campaign launch event in N.Y.C. on Wednesday. “At the end of the day, I’m choosing what I’m showing you. A lot of the world feels so much entitlement in other people’s lives, which is so crazy and so new for human beings. We never had that.”

She added that her cleanse from the networking apps will also help her block out negativity and Internet hate.

“I’m going to take a break when I feel like it and when I come back and share it with you if you want to be supportive and still follow me I’m so grateful for that,” she said. “But if you’re going to be negative or be upset that I had to be human for a month than maybe I don’t want your follow anyway.”

Hadid finds the process of stepping away to be not only “empowering,” but also a good way for her to connect with those around her.

“I’m so grateful for social media because it’s given me so much more in my career, but I also really respect my career without the social media aspect,” she said. “And I really want to still pay most of the attention to my job as a craft and not lose the art in it and the relationships that are meaningful to me not because of the money or the contracts but because of how I inspired designers and how they inspire me. I want to go back to focusing on that kind of relationship within fashion when I go to work for the next month.”

[From People]

I have many thoughts on this but I need to qualify them all by saying that I have no social media game. I mean, I have a blank Instagram account that I forget about until Instagram emails me. As Gigi and her ilk are referred to as Instamodels because that is how they rose to fame, doesn’t this kind of reek of “don’t bite the hands that feeds you?” Don’t get me wrong I am all for social media blackouts but mine are slightly shorter, like a weekend or even just after 4PM. Also, I understand giving others a heads up about why you aren’t responding electronically but I always feel when someone shoots me an article about unplugging and says, “I am totally doing this, we all should!” that the real subtext is “okay, everyone get off social media so I don’t miss anything while I off it.”

I know Gigi was assaulted by that a—h-le Vitalii Sediuk in Milan and I imagine she is looking at quite a few things differently as a result. Her comments on taking a break seem personal. I can’t quite figure out, however, if she was dragged online (maybe for her Melania impression at the AMAS?) or if she is having a crisis of conscience about her career. That last paragraph is hard to decipher but it sounds a little like she might be worried that she doesn’t have a career without social media. If that is the case, I hope she gets what she wants out of this break.

    Who?

    • Dan Lopez says:

Exactly. So weak of Reebok (owned by addidas) . Now I am no Trump apologist, but having Gigi speak @ a Reebok ‘womans empowerment’ event 3 weeks after publicly shaming Melania Trump at the ama’s is a fucking joke. So sick of the hypocrisy in these celebrity /endorsement deal arrangements.

  2. Swak says:

Didn’t Kendall do the same thing? Is thing going to be a “thing” these instamodels do to prove they are more than their followings on social media?

    • naomipaige says:

I think so. It’s all about the game.

    • paolanqar says:

More likely she will take ‘time off’ to get some surgical procedure.
Kendall has been quite for a while to resurface with monster lips. I am curious to see what Gigi emerges with.

      Stay tuned.

      • ell says:

tbf to kendall whom i don’t even like btw, you don’t need time off for lip injections. you’re literally swollen for like a day, and then totally fine.

  3. anniefannie says:

I’ve liked Gigi ever since she wrote the supportive note on Instagram after Zayn cancelled a concert due to anxiety. It was thoughtful and well written. After reading Sophia Ritchie’s interview comments Gigi comes off as an intellectual…..

    • naomipaige says:

Yeah, but , who’s to say she even wrote it herself?

      • anniefannie says:

I watched her do a celebrity interview with Tommy Hilfiger ( whom I loathe ) and she came across as sweet AND articulate. I don’t think she’s deserving of the hate she routinely gets….

      • ell says:

@anniefannie same. i don’t get the criticism when it comes to both gigi and bella, they’re both gorgeous so would have been models regardless of their connections (and no, i don’t want to hear how they had plastic surgery. all models have had some plastic surgery at the beginning of their career, you don’t know the industry if you think that isn’t the case), and they seem lovely girls.

      • asd says:

        > (and no, i don’t want to hear how they had plastic surgery. all models have had some plastic surgery at the beginning of their career, you don’t know the industry if you think that isn’t the case),

Gigi had some minor work. Bella, however, had basically a face transplant. She’d never be a model without it and her name.

  4. naomipaige says:

Who gives a sh*t!! Bye girl!!!!

  5. Wren33 says:

It is her career, but I can’t imagine having such an overwhelming focus on social media and being exposed to all the constant feedback, positive and negative. I think it is healthy to get away, even if it is biting the hand that feeds her.

  6. Aims says:

I just think it’s so vapid . Like any one who decides to not take selfies , twitter, snapchat etc for a month is a selfless person . Like they deserve a medal or something . It’s all so vain and narcissistic .

    End of rant

    • Wiffie says:

But the act of being on social media is so vapid too. I agree that the public “hair flip” is a bit attention grabby, but if she didn’t announce her reasoning vwith that kind of following, it would be like she was trying to get attention by silence and making the people beg where she went and what happened.

I can’t blame the girl, and she really can’t win.

      • Aims says:

Agreed . Which is why I don’t understand this need to post every second of your life for the world to see. This constant need of public reaffirmation and over sharing baffles me.

Can a person live their lives without social media ?

  7. Ankhel says:

So, what type of plastic surgery has a few weeks of recovery time, hmmm…?

  8. Lama Bean says:

Seems strange you need to “announce” you are disappearing for a while. Almost as if you are waiting for people to beg you not to go. You can just, you know, get off.

I’m the person who slips out of a party and will be home in my PJs before anyone notices I’m gone, so I may be a bit biased here.

    • naomipaige says:

      +1

    • jinni says:

Maybe but I can understand because if she just disappeared without an announcement the tabs would start making all kinds of bs stories to explain the mystery. Also the people that follow celebs on social media have a tendency of going way overboard when even the slightest change in their fave is discovered and get almost hysterical until their fave comes and explains things. They will go off and create the craziest theories which then get spread around the internet as if it is the truth creating more gossip and problems for the celeb. So it is best to make an announcement.

  9. MellyMel says:

I follow her on Insta and the comments on her pictures after that Melania impression were horrible. There were ppl, including grown men calling her horrible names and telling her she should die. I don’t blame her from taking a break when you have that amount of toxic energy coming at you.

    • naomipaige says:

Unfortunately, when you put yourself out there like she does you’re opening yourself to these things. You can’t ask for the fame, no matter what age you are, and not accept what comes with it.

      • Classy and Sassy says:

Erm, no. It’s one thing being open to criticism, but comments like that are never acceptable – no matter who you are.

  10. Lalu says:

People feel entitlement to other people’s lives? Do people force others to get online and post every boring thing that they do all day? I think it’s more like, everyone thinks they are super special and everything they do deserves attention.
I know she’s young. I am not knocking her. It’s more of a feeling I have about social media as a whole. I see people more interested in convincing others that their lives are fulfilled… Than living fulfilled lives. I don’t get it.

    • M. says:

Well said. I read an article the other day with a Woman who said social media basically took over her life. She would go out and do certain things just to post them to Facebook or whatever for likes. I just can’t imagine being so immersed in it like that.

  11. minx says:

    I still think she’s cute.

  12. MissMerry says:

“But if you’re going to be negative or be upset that I had to be human for a month than maybe I don’t want your follow anyway.”

    1. this implies that if you’re on social media, you’re not a human being?
honey, some of us can be on social media and still have a real life in the real world with real people we really actually like.

    2. even before she’s done it, she’s attacking those who don’t/won’t agree or support her….so are you quitting for yourself or are you quitting to make a ‘social media comeback’…

    which one is it, sister?

the fact that this is some sort of announcement is silly in the first place. it’s clearly PR, clearly a stunt, if it wasn’t, she’d have one pretty-faced post about going quiet for a month starting right after she posts that last post and get on with it, instead of making an official announcement about it. ugh.

  13. Aenna says:

I like her, even more so after she punched that grabby “prankster”

  14. Lynnie says:

Her bodyguard’s face is how I feel about finals week lol.

I agree with you her last paragraph sounds kinda like that note Selena wrote right before she had her breakdown. And no offense, but who is she gonna be a muse too? She might be sweet and nice, but imo she has no IT factor that would make a designer go, “Yes! Inspiration1!!11!!”

Hopefully she is just truly taking a break, but I would not be surprised at all if she came back with something “fixed.”

  15. Lucy says:

I love her coat on the last picture!

  16. Katherine says:

From what she said I guess it’s about the negative comments – I feel the same way about the news, so I take a break from reading them very often. But, unlike social media, I hope others do keep reading the news because I’ll need them to let me know if smth important happens))

  17. Jillybean says:

    Zzzzzzz nobody will notice

  18. Mylène - Montréal says:

Why you need to tell me that ? I don’t care you take time off about social media. So narcissist …

  19. perplexed says:

She’s prettier when she’s not actually modelling. Go figure.

  20. Susan says:

Isn’t Gigi getting all kinds of press this past week or two for her skeletal frame? I even read a story yesterday in DM where she is claiming a thyroid problem for her significant weight loss. *cough* sure that’s what it really is.

Maybe Gigi is feeling the need to be off social media for a short bit to deal with some “health” issues or else to avoid the press and questions about it. The speculation is rampant though it has more to do with the normal model diet of hard drugs.

  21. Anare says:

Ok but before you go can you tell us why you braided your hair to look like a vagina on top of your head? Thanks bye.

  22. Eric says:

    Nobody cares. Girl bye.

  23. Rina says:

    Gigi is pretty.

What is the need to announce a break from social media? Just take a vacation. Gigi’s PR probably feels the need to announce a break from social media to generate articles like the one on Celebitchy. Publicity.

  24. A Fan says:

Feel free to take a lot longer. No really, please do.

[*Tell the Kardashians/Jenners to join you.*]

  25. Tredd says:

    Promises, promises.

Bitch needs a burger, anyway. Her and Kendall both.
