Anna Wintour apologizes for speaking truth about Donald Trump on a train

wenn29984477

Anna Wintour, the editor-in-chief of Vogue, has been a supporter of the Democratic party for a while. There were times, of course, when she’s allowed Republicans to be profiled within Vogue, but she really seemed to relish the Obama years. She put Michelle Obama on the cover multiple times, she helped Michelle find new American designers to champion and wear, and she hosted multiple fundraisers for Obama, Hillary Clinton and the Dems. So is it any surprise that Wintour was overheard talking sh-t about Donald Trump? No. What is a surprise is that her off-the-record comments were reported, and that she issued an apology for said comments.

If you’ve been spending the past month and change talking about the election results whenever and wherever — at dinner, to your cat, on a crowded train — you’re not alone. But after Anna Wintour, a slightly more conspicuous public figure, was reportedly overheard criticizing President-elect Donald Trump in the latter location, she issued an apology. Per the Mirror, the Vogue editor-in-chief reportedly criticized the Trump Foundation specifically, saying, “Trump’s foundation has done nothing. Its board is packed with relatives, and he’s going to use his presidency to sell himself and his brand and profit personally for himself and his family.”

After she was contacted by the tabloid, Wintour, a notable Hillary Clinton supporter, said, “I immediately regretted my comments, and I apologise. I hope that President-elect Trump will be a successful president for us all.” A spokesperson for Vogue confirmed that quote.

[From The Daily Mirror & New York Magazine]

Here’s what bugs me – she was merely overheard on a train, and those comments were published. If she was a public servant, I would say that perhaps that was fair. But she’s a private citizen, speaking to someone else and her comments were overheard. WTF? And what she said wasn’t even that bad! Not only that, her comments were factually correct! The Trump Foundation does nothing. And PEOTUS is already looking for ways to personally profit from the presidency. So yeah, if I was in Wintour’s position, I would have A) not responded to the Daily Mirror’s reporting or B) issued a statement saying “I tell no lies about the Orange One.”

She’ll probably end up putting Ivanka on the cover, at least.

    • Megan says:

No doubt. White college educated women are her demographic, and, sadly, far too many of them voted for Trump.

    • Alicat1822 says:

Hmm. Doubt it. Vogue needs to sell their magazine and “in this post-election climate”, I can’t see how that would be a good business decision for them. She’ll probably get a feature story with lots of lovely photographs of her “being a mommy/stand-in FLOTUS/wife of intellectual lightweight a**hat”.

    • robyn says:

Sickening and weak she would apologize for telling the truth. Wonder if she is pandering because she wants Ivanka on a cover (an issue I would never buy) or America is now a totalitarian regime where fellow citizens are spied upon and fear for their lives and/or livelihoods. Another gag moment in a long stream of them to come.

      • Radley says:

Well, to be fair, she has business considerations. Just because she’s liberal doesn’t mean the people she answers to are.

And I think honesty is the best policy. Better to own it than ignore or deny and then have audio/video emerge. You never know. People don’t respect boundaries these days.

I don’t know that Anna really wants Ivanka on the cover. But if Ivanka wants a cover, she’ll probably get it, just like Kim K. :/

    • SM says:

The world is coming to an end:
      1. The Wintour on the train?
      2. Wintour and an apology? Since when?
      3. Apologizing for the truth? Since when?
      4. Trump owns the devil too?

  2. Agapanthus says:

Jeez, what happeneed to the principle of free speech?! At least Trump won’t threaten to sue her now he’s president-elect!

    • evilqueen says:

Why do you say that? I think he’ll be as suit happy as ever. The man has no clue.

      • Ankhel says:

Trump never has and never will change for any reason. He’s seventy years old, and an impulsive, impetous child. Lawsuits are one of his dearest hobbies, and he’s currently embroiled in over 100.

    • teacakes says:

      Edit: wrong place.

    • valkenburg says:

I didn’t see anything in the article about Trump trying to sue her…or even say anything about her or what she said. Did I miss something?

  3. swak says:

Next she’ll put him and Melania on the cover of Vogue. Sad day when you cannot express your opinion without feeling you have to apologize afterwards.

    • NatalieS says:

Anna already put Melania on the cover, back when Melania married Donald. They did a story on the wedding dress.

I always thought that was odd. They certainly have plenty of actual socialites and models they can put on the cover so why Melania of all people?

Who knows what influence and backdealings Trump has with Wintour and Conde Nast?

      • LizLemonGotMarried says:

How beautiful was she before they stretched her eyes out?

      • Tiffany :) says:

Wow, her eyes were so different!

      • Radley says:

        Ugly dress tho.

      • Macscore says:

I just looked at the pic of Melania on the cover, and couldn’t help chuckling that the headline immediately next to her said, “Forget the Facelift”. Guess she missed that memo. … And, just below: “Against All Odds: Hilary… ” (Well, admittedly, it was an article about Hilary Swank, not Hillary Clinton, but there was little ‘prescient irony’ or something for me there…).
How revolting that Anna Wintour’s private comments were recorded and made public. It’s pathetic that she apologised. I feel as if I’m watching a novel by Hans Falada play out….(1930s Berlin; everybody spying on their neighbours – you get the picture).

    • swak says:

Thanks all. I don’t read fashion mags.

  4. Jenns says:

    Anna Wintour apologizes?

  5. MissMerry says:

    GROW A BACKBONE.

That apology makes this strong, tough woman of power seem weak.

You can stand up for anything fashion but you can’t stand up for the country that gave you the ability to get where you are? You see yourself as powerful and influential and you back down like this?

    wuss.

    • INeedANap says:

I’ve always secretly loved her Nuclear Wintour reputation. Any woman who takes power (bc power is never handed to us like it is to men) has to be at least part-ball buster and I respect women with ambition.

And yet in the greatest test of her strength, she failed. It costs nothing to be mean to pampered under-fed models and airhead reality tv stars, but standing up to fascism would have cemented her position. What a shame.

    • teacakes says:

I would have respected the old tartar no end if she had just been her Nuclear Wintour self and maintained an icy silence. No apology, nothing.

It’s horrific to me that even she, of all people, is cowed by bigots.

  6. marshmellow says:

First facts and truth become irrelevant while Cheeto Hitler is free to spew blatant lies all over Twitter. Now people are having to apologize for telling the truth.

    Okay then…

    • Original T.C. says:

I’m glad this was reported because yesterday Trump cancelled his scheduled Thursday press conference where he was going to tell us how he will avoid conflict of interests with his business and the presidency. And of course he bailed at the last minute sending tweets instead. He’s going to wait until the electoral college votes him in first!

He tried to hide the story by announcing the Exxon guy as Secretary of State yesterday. Hopefully this tabloid story will spread like wildfire and force the press to confront the sleezy orange one.

      https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.washingtonpost.com/amphtml/news/powerpost/wp/2016/12/12/trump-postpones-announcement-on-how-he-will-avoid-conflicts-of-interests/?client=safari

      • swak says:

So according to the article, no new deals will be made while he is president: “vowed that the companies would make “no new deals” while he is in office” So for 4 years, no new deals – wouldn’t that (and I am not even close to understanding business related topics) put his companies in jeopardy and possibly lose enough money to have bankruptcy declared (again)?

      • Original T.C. says:

        @Swark

We wouldn’t be able to find out what are new deals vs. old ones without his taxes or disclosures. Furthermore he also promised that Ivanka would be dealing only with his businesses until we found out she’s been attending Trump’s meetings with foreign governments involved with Trump businesses deals.

He is either lying or going to find a loop hole. He ran away from having to give a press conference where we would be questioned by reporters! I am more certain now that his impeachment will be related to shady businesses deals and that his fellow rich Business people are the ones who will push for it.

      • Original T.C. says:

        @Who are these People

Yep! Goodness knows the extent of his deals or loans from foreign companies or governments. He is so open to blackmail. And he left Ivanka out of the tweet only saying his SONS will manage his business when he used to include her too. Now she’s apparently going to be FLOTUS.

Thanks for linking the Newsweek article, off to go read it.

    • Juls says:

Spot on Marshmellow. Buckle your seatbelt, because this hand basket ride to hell is just getting started, and it’s going to be a bumpy ride.

  7. Sam says:

Well this is what happens when Trump is the president. He and his supporters can talk bad about everyone and anyone but the moment you say a word about him, it’s over.

  8. HK9 says:

Anna “Nuclear” Wintour doesn’t apologize so this probably has to do with the business relationship Vogue tends to have with the First Lady. So, I guess we’re getting Ivanka on a cover soon.

    • Josefina says:

MTE. Thousands of people have publically bashed Trump. It’s really not a big issue to do so… Unless you’re interested in working with them.

    • Alicat1822 says:

As long as we can hold a magazine burning riot so all of us “sore losers” and “cry babies” can express our feelings in the proper fascist way.

    • teacakes says:

Meanwhile, freaking TEEN VOGUE (!!!) publishes editorials talking about exactly how terrible Drumpf is, and has stories about homophobic tweets by Republican politicians and the erosion of reproductive rights by Mike Pence.

      • Lacia Can says:

New editor, great new direction. I have resubscribed for my daughter. I let it lapse because the Jenner girls were on the cover 3 times in one year! Not good role models. Maybe the new editor will branch out more in that respect. At any rate, she should be applauded for her stand.

  9. minx says:

    What she said is true.

  10. Bes says:

I get that she doesn’t want to lose readers, but it was an overheard private conversation, and she didn’t even say anything wrong or slanderous. I’m not sure why she didn’t just issue a no comment. I mean, they can’t prove she said it, and being the icy icon she is, she could wave off any inquiries as beneath her dignity.

Big Brother is watching fashion magazine icons on trains, apparently.

    • Who ARE These People? says:

Big Brother watches Saturday Night Live too. Big Brother is a New Yorker desperate to be accepted by the cool kids.

  11. eggyweggs says:

I’m sorry Nuclear Wintour has been humbled in such a fashion. Thank you to Celebitchy for continuing to share these stories.

  12. Gail says:

She’s a public person in her role as editor of Vogue. She’s knows this. She knows that people who buy Vogue and can afford the products endorsed by the magazine are the rich people who likely voted for Trump. It’s unfortunate that a private conversation was reported, though.

  13. Burgher says:

The bottom line is that culturally we are in an environment where anything you say, or someone thought you said, private or public, can & will be used to attempt to destroy you, especially if you are a public figure.

  14. Eric says:

She might be sent to a camp as a political dissident.

  15. Carmen says:

Thank God I cancelled my subscription to Vogue fifteen years ago and missed that horrible Melania cover. She looks like she’s wearing Miz Ellen’s po-teers.

    • teacakes says:

Better to put that money towards newspaper subscriptions, especially local and/or credible ones. They need the money/subscribers if they’re to have any hope of opposing him.

  16. Bonbon says:

    While she’s apologizing…….

    Kanye? Kim?

  17. M.A.F. says:

She doesn’t want to end up in the gulags so apologize now and put his wife and daughter on the cover to make up for her remarks. Sad really.

  18. Sansa says:

Sounds like she knows the whole one percent tribe and knows what she is talking about.

  19. grabbyhands says:

WHY DO PEOPLE KEEP APOLOGIZING FOR THIS A**HOLE??

Is she THAT worried the Trump supporters will stop reading Vogue?

  20. Lisa says:

What a ridiculous country America is.

  21. Tough Cookie says:

She knew if she didn’t apologize she would lose the chance to put the First Pu$$y and/or Nazi Barbie on the cover.

    • Macscore says:

@ Tough Cookie: First Pu$$y!!!! Fantastic! I don’t know if you invented this – if so, excellent. Won’t be able to think of Melanoma as anything else now. Ha ha!

  22. Hazel says:

Wow, it’s like the days of the Spanish Inquisition when you had to worry about being overheard in a pub (or some hostelry). Anna is just trying to save herself.

  23. wolfie says:

The days are here when brother will be against brother, sons and daughters against their parents. I have a coworker that will be busily turning people in. I don’t know if anyone on this site has read about the red, blue, and yellow lists. A few months ago as I was stepping out my door, a man in a nondescript pickup got out and spray painted a short blue line on the pavement in front of my house. He wore just regular clothes. I called town hall in the rural area I live in and they had no knowledge of it. Same with utilities and parish. I drove around town and found half a dozen more in a random arrangement.

    • Calli says:

Cool story, bro. Sounds real legit.

    • shura says:

Yeah, the FEMA lists. That story is about ten years old. Good news is blue list is for reeducation, red for termination. So you’re safe! More likely the spray paint was used to mark a gas or electrical line.

  24. Cookiejar says:

The US has stooped down to North Korea level. Now it’s forbidden to criticize the US’s “supreme leader” eh?

  25. Konspiracytheory says:

So, superficial question in light of everything going on at the moment: That’s a wig, correct? I’m in my late forties and dealing with very noticeably thinning hair, and I just can’t imagine a woman her age has hair that is that thick…?

  26. emma says:

    It’s true tho

  27. BB says:

I would like to know who the hell still reads these shitty magazines like Vogue?? Much like porn….doesn’t everybody get it- stories/gossip/make-up tips, etc.- from the internet these days??

  28. Harryg says:

    Don’t apologize!

  29. shura says:

Forced apologies made by private citizens for opinions spoken in private?? It’s unsettling to see our culture come to this. I don’t care if you’re alt right or a red commie. I don’t care if you tell me Clinton is the Whore of Babylon or Trump is the anti Christ. Please please please, speak you’re peace and to hell with the offended.
