Christian Bale says his Terminator character is the one with anger issues

Christian Bale is still trying to explain that obscene four-minute tirade against the director of photography on Terminator: Salvation that was released this February. Bale went on Good Morning America yesterday to promote the film, and ended up getting several questions about the leaked audio where he is heard screaming at this crew member. Bale defended himself on Good Morning America by saying it was the character of John Connor who had the anger problem. Ah, yes. That’s a good one. Blame it on the character.

Of course, Bale actually does take “full responsibility” for the incident, while carefully avoiding questions about whether he seriously does have larger anger management issues. Recently, Bale gave an interview where he took also “full responsibility”, yet managed to give some of the blame to whoever released the audio of the rant, saying it was a breach of creative trust. And now he gets to pull out the “privacy” card when asked about that incident where he, his mother and his sister got into some physical/verbal altercation. It doesn’t seem like full responsibility to me, but what do I know?

Christian Bale’s having a tough time shaking his hot-headed reputation after infamously berating a film crew member last summer.

On “Good Morning America” Monday to promote his new film “Terminator Salvation,” out this Thursday, Bale was asked whether he has an anger management problem.

“Well, certainly John Connor has an anger problem, ” Bale demurred, referring to his “Terminator” alter ego.

Bale’s four-minute, profanity-laced tirade against director of photography Shane Hurlbut on the set of the film was leaked onto the Internet earlier this year, where it became the star of musical remixes and parodies. Bale issued a public apology on LA’s KROQ radio station in February.

“The whole incident was something which absolutely I regret, but we were resolved within 30 seconds on the film set,” Bale said on “GMA,” calling the blowup “unfortunate” and “inexcusable.”

“I take full responsibility for it. Absolutely.”

Bale was also pressed about anger issues in his personal life. The actor was arrested last July in London after a heated argument with his mother and sister. He was released on bail and never charged.

“I maintain incredible privacy. I do believe it’s, you know, nothing but a family affair,” Bale said. “And obviously, I assume, we all understand things like that happen, and I don’t desire to go into more explanation because I think as an actor, I like just to act and have people believe the characters. So I appreciate people respecting my privacy on those issues.”

[From The New York Daily News]

I don’t doubt that Bale really is sorry for his verbal attack on Shane Hurlbut. I just think he’s equally sorry the tape saw the light of day. Bale’s a great actor, and he has a knack for playing characters that burn with intensity. Maybe it’s not so much the parts he’s offered, but the violent characters he’s drawn to. So, did Bale learn his lesson after this ordeal? Maybe, maybe not. My guess is that it will depend on how well Terminator: Salvation does at the box office. Hollywood has a habit of looking the other way when a guy’s an a–hole, but only if that a–hole makes them money.

    Team BALE!!

The sound guy shouldn’t have wandered into the shot. Once wouldn’t be an issue. But twice!!?? Bale is a method actor so I understand his blow up.

However, this is something he shouldn’t repeat again. If a scene is so emotionally draining, it would be best for him to request a closed set that day.

  2. Amy says:

I think he’s a decent family man and an intense method actor. He lost it at work, obviously apologized and felt bad for it, etc. Let it go already!

  3. the original kate says:

no kidding, amy. christian owned it and apologized…it’s not like he drove around LA drunk and called a cop “sugar tits” while blaming jews for his problems.

  4. Enonymous says:

I hear all these excuses that because he is such a great actor he can get away with being a major a hole, however, I have seen most of his movies (earlier ones and latest ones) and he is always upstaged but other better actors and while I do think he is a decent actor, he is no way anything special or spectacular.

Even if he is the greatest actor on this earth he is in the end of the day an ACTOR with no real value or significant influence in society.

The only way I would find the whole outburst fiasco somewhat acceptable would be if 1. at that time Bale was really battling real life robots and not acting 2. if he was a doctor or a surgeon in ER trying to save a person’s life in time and there were complications. Other then that Bale and any other actor that behaves like him need to come down a peck or two.

It’s called method ACTING. That means that he has honed the craft of acting and actually has techniques/skills that allow him to play a character in a fictional setting. That doesn’t mean he “becomes” the character. He is still playing a role and if he can’t find the difference between reality and fantasy, then he definitely has a problem. My bet is that the man has issues, but I wouldn’t call them “anger management issues.” That’s B.S. That term is always a mask for something else going on, usually control/power issues and who knows what else. He doesn’t really want “privacy;” what he wants is “immunity.” Nor does he want “trust,” so much as “silent subjection.”

  6. Hieronymus Grexx says:

And if this guy didn’t give you ladies the flaming pagan thigh sweats, it would be a different story. Forgiveness comes quickly when you wanna jump in he sack with the guy.

  7. Lucinda says:

Or just maybe those two incidents both occurred during a difficult period of his life. Remember, this was about the time of Dark Knight premiering and he was dealing with Ledger’s death. Many reports say they were close and he was very sad about the whole thing. Anger is part of the mourning process. He was probably angry a lot during that time and I don’t blame him for not wanting to rehash all that now.

How many times does the guy need to apologize? You are asked enough times, yeah, you are going to start putting out additional explanations. Geez. At least he actually apologized adn pretty genuinely at that! That is rare in this day.

  8. Gistine says:

I would not care if his head spun around and he was covered in cow poop. I would still eat him like a sundae. And lick the glass.

  9. Missy says:

It’s hard to believe he’s the same actor who played Laurie in _Little Women_.

  10. Orangejulius says:

Gistine…I’m smiling away. I’m not sure about the cow poop, but he gets extra slack, that’s for sure…..

  11. Magsy says:

Sorry he looks mean to me with those eyes. Kinda like Jim Brolin in Amityville Horror. I wouldn’t piss him off.

  12. Trillion says:

True, Hieronymous, true. I was totally turned on listening to the tirade. Guilty as charged.

  13. Feebee says:

I’ve heard this guy’s intense, a true method actor etc but also heard he’s a total professional. Obviously that should be total professional most of the time. So he was an asshole for 4 minutes. Until it’s noted he does it consistently I’ll willing to believe 4 minutes of assholeness does not make him one overall.

  14. Sarto says:

John Connor has anger problems? Every character Christian B. plays has anger problems. He even turned Batman into an enraged, drunken beat cop who likes to torture suspects.

Gee, I wonder why they cast him for those roles… Oh, I know. BECAUSE HE’S ANGRY.

  15. 88modesty88 says:

He was great in Equilibrium, and I respectfully disagree with those who think he gets upstaged by other actors in his movies.

    He definitely burns with intensity!

And yes, Hieronymus, LOL, I must admit that he’s gorgeous!

I also think his female relatives sound like leeches — and not because of anything Christian has said. He kept quiet about the whole thing.

  16. taratata!! says:

since 2 months,he excuses !in every interview! it’s pityful! he’s not Chris Brown or Woddy Harrelson or Russel Crowe! it’s over! he was here to promote a movie where he’s even not the real star! this story is so boring!

  17. lilly says:

I still haven’t heard him apologizing to the actual victim of his verbal attack. seems to me he’s not sorry, just sorry he got caught.

  18. I Choose Me says:

@Lily. Yes, yes he did. He apologized to the guy the SAME DAY on set. Just because YOU didn’t hear him apologize to the guy, doesn’t mean he didn’t.

As to Hieronymous’ comment you’re not wrong. Given the chance, I would not let that man out of bed.

  19. j. ferber says:

I’d agree that one incident doesn’t necessarily make him a lout, but add that to the mother/sister incident and the odds go up dramatically. Undoubtedly, there are other incidents that never made it out of the “circle of trust” he relies on in his professional life. About him being hot, I don’t get that, but to each her own.

  20. Gistine says:

@Orangejulius. LOL. He can do no wrong.

  21. Vinss20 says:

Come on, everyone’s talking about Christian Bale and no one seems to think about the DP. Being a DP is one of the most important job on a movie set, and Bale would be nothing, and I mean nothing, if it weren’t for this guy. If the DP doesn’t get his lighting right, he might as well not light at all. And chances are he was tweaking a spot so Bale would look better. Bale’s just a spoiled millionaire, that’s all.

  22. FF says:

Dear James Cameron, please, please, PLEASE, come back and reclaim your franchise.

As much as I generally like Bale’s performances and his acting, I’m just not feeling THE John Connor as having anger issues. The Batman, yes. Bateman, yes. But leave John out of it.

I’ve been trying to figure out my problem with him being cast as John Connor and that’s it: I don’t see John Connor as one of Bale’s stock ‘angry man’ characters. Sorry, but there it is.

You only have to go back to Michael Biehn’s performance as Kyle Reese to get an idea of John. I always saw him as preternaturally calm with a lot going on beneath the surface sure – but angry – who the hell has time to get angry? He’s had the weight of the world on his shoulders for too long: time to get down to serious business. So yeah, Bale, whatever on that interpretation.

Oh, yeah and, almost forgot: McG is a hack.

  23. Amaresh says:

Haha, I agree with you. Btw, has anyone watch the movie yet? What do you guys think?
