Kit Harington: ‘I always cry on a plane…I like a good cry every now & then’

The 68th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards

Kit Harington really is getting better at saying words. We went through a stretch where Kit was always saying words about how difficult his life was because he’s so gorgeous and hunky. He’s stopped doing that so much, and he doesn’t do that at all in this new interview with Elle. Kit chatted with Elle’s TV Issue, even though he’s supposedly promoting his new film, Brimstone (a western with Dakota Fanning). Here’s something I didn’t know but I learned from this Elle piece: Kit is one of four actors on Game of Thrones now making $1.1 million per episode. You can read the full Elle piece here. Some highlights:

How he lost his virginity: “Mine was a little less left-field than in a cave. It was a typical sort of teenage thing, at a party. I was probably too young. [He’s asked if he was 13.] No, but you’re not far off. I think the girl and I just kind of wanted to. You either hold on and do it right, or you’re young and decide to get the monkey off your back.

His ancestor invented the flushing toilet for Queen Elizabeth I: “That’s 100 percent true. It’s called “the John Harington.”… I’m glad it’s not called “the Harington.” [My family] also wrote the queen a lot of bad poetry. I’ve inherited the bad poetry genes, but not the inventor genes.”

He loves working on GoT in Iceland: “I love it. You’re usually in the back end of nowhere. The whole crew and cast is in one hotel. There’s no bar down the road you can go to; there’s no restaurant. You stop at four in the afternoon when it gets dark, and you have the whole evening to kill. That sounds claustrophobic and dull, but it’s wondrous because you’re with this family. Everyone comes out of their shell because they can’t sit in front of their screens. You have to talk. People bring out board games, instruments.

The last time he cried: “I always cry on a plane. There’s something romantic about being on a plane going somewhere, being at that altitude.… I like a good cry every now and then. It releases something. There are times in my life when I’m meant to cry, but I don’t actually cry. But then I can be walking down the street and it’s been a few months, and things get on top of me—that’s when I find myself crying… I was watching the movie Eye in the Sky with Helen Mirren. Alan Rickman had died, and I saw him in this movie—and that made me very upset. [Pause] That was a while ago. I need a cry.

He really wants to be on Sesame Street: “I was a massive Sesame Street fan when I was little. I wasn’t allowed to watch TV if I was ill and had to stay home from school—because that would encourage me to stay home. The only thing I was allowed to watch was Sesame Street. It backfired on Mum, because I would want to stay home just to watch Sesame Street. In fact, I was talking to Peter Dinklage the other day, and he said he’d been on the show and I was like—you can put this in print—I want to be on Sesame Street. That would be a dream for me. I’d be quite starstruck by the puppets.

[From Elle]

I love that they asked him about crying. He always feels like crying when he’s flying? Actually, that doesn’t sound so crazy. Changes in altitude affect different people in different ways. What would you do if you were seated next to a sobbing Kit Harington on a plane? I think I would ask him if he needed a hug. As for Sesame Street… they should call him, my God. He would be great on Sesame Street, and I do think he’s an underrated comedic actor in general.

That title made me laugh out loud. Thank you Kaiser. I really needed that today.

  2. Luca76 says:

I think there’ was a segment about people crying to cheesy movies on the This American Life podcast. Apparently it’s a phenomenon that non emotional people get weepy on planes.

    • lizzie says:

yes! on the crybabies podcast almost every guest talks about crying on planes. i always cry when i watch movies or shows on planes – and one time it was really loud uncomfortable uncontrolled crying (watched 21 grams 8 hours into a 14 hour flight – i was off my rocker).

  3. AppleShmapple says:

I believe it. He always looks as if he’s about to cry.

    • SilverUnicorn says:

Exactly! He cannot stop whining either.

    • Nancy says:

Doesn’t he. I’m not one of those people who could cry on a plane unless perhaps if it was crashing. I don’t get his appeal to women, but I’m guessing there are men who relate to him on some levels. Sensitive types. You know nothing Jon Snow. *I love your name AppleShmapple! My son loves Apple Snapple, the rhyming name more than the drink, I like peach!*

  4. Lightpurple says:

Kit inherited the bad poetry gene! Kit says words about being bad at saying words!

    HODOR!
    DROGON!
    GHOST!

  5. Megan says:

I think Kit is a Jason Isbell fan … one of his more famous lyrics, “I know flying over water always makes you cry.”

  6. third ginger says:

Given the competition in the younger British actor category, I always think he’s lucky to be employed. And I love GOT.

  7. squeezeolime says:

    And you look it pal

  8. Soprana says:

Has anyone seen the “official” Sesame St GOT parody? All of it, ESP the Melisandre shout out, is HILARIOUS

  9. Lindsey says:

Is he crying over his Southern (US) accent in Brimstone? He should be.

  10. Tash says:

He’s meh to me but he is so right about the crying thing. Every few months a good cry for no apparent reason is healthy I think. It’s not good to bottle up and a good cry is a remedy.

  11. Liz says:

I don’t think he’s very good looking. But I also like a good cry.

    • Nina says:

I don’t find him very attractive either, which is weird, because I ADORE bearded guys with dark hair. I can understand why people find Kit attractive, but something about him in particular doesn’t do it for me. Maybe I prefer sharper facial features on men, whereas Kit is kind of softer and rounder in the face.

      • Ayra. says:

Similar to my case then and his expression doesn’t help, it’s like a (permanent) pouty, confused, watery eyes look.

  12. Lucy says:

Oh, hunky, snowy tears. He’s charming. It’s so cool that he wants to be in Sesame Street.

  13. Jean Gray says:

I just love him. I think some of what he says is tongue in cheek. But I’ve always liked Kit. He was great in Seth Myers Jon Snow skit and he should probably look into doing more comedies.

  14. KBeth says:

    He is so not sexy.

  15. Sayrah says:

I don’t know why but I love everything about this. I’m desperate for June to get here.

Peter and Lena have both been on sesame street. That totally has to happen. They’re both on hbo now. I’m shocked it hasn’t happened yet.

  16. Izzy says:

    This guy sounds exhausting.

  17. serena says:

Finally he’s opening up a little bit more, I love reading his interviews, he can be so interesting.

  18. Aysla says:

Really enjoyed this interview! It was interesting and very charming. I liked what he had to say about the strong bonding the cast & crew do, a lot out of sheer necessity. It must feel like summer camp! And ditto on the crying. I can’t relate to the airplane bit, although I have heard of the phenomenon, but sometimes I need a good cry and purposefully seek it… that’s where a great book or sad movie comes in for me.

  19. DesertReal says:

I know this was a thing back in the Jim Sturgess heydays- but Snow does in fact look like a pillow weeper.
As I type this I can’t even think of anything clever/witty due to my utter lack of surprise.
