Prince William & Kate did the Irish Guards-shamrock thing with no drama

Irish Guards St Patrick's Day

Here are the long-awaited photos of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in Hounslow for the annual St. Patrick’s Day event with the Irish Guards. Every year, William and Kate are supposed to show up for one of the nicest photo-ops on their schedule – Kate is supposed to wear green and pass out shamrocks to the Irish Guards and their mascot, a good dog named Domhnall. Last year, Kate skipped the photo-op for no real reason other than she didn’t want people to expect her to do it every year. At that point last year, William had been facing down a barrage of criticism for being “work-shy,” and some theorized that he wanted Kate to take a PR hit too, so he encouraged her to stay home. Who knows?

In any case, Kate showed up this year and she put on a “brave face,” I guess. Personally, I don’t see even a hint of angst or anger in her face. She seemed to be performing well, perhaps because she was surrounded by men in uniform and a great dog. If only Ben Ainslie was there! I think Kate managed to get a new coatdress out of this, which is sweet relief for me, because she always wore the same two green coatdresses every year. I don’t have the ID on this, but look at how buttony it is! That’s why Kate chose it. She loves buttons.

Most of the write-ups about this appearance are about how William is an idiot for going to Verbier and how their Paris trip is going to be awkward as hell. Immediately after this Irish Guards appearance, Will and Kate are headed out to Paris for a whirlwind 48 hours. We’ll have more coverage this weekend.

Hate the buttons, love the dog!

    • seesittellsit says:

+1,000!!! Hate , hate, HATE the two rows of buttons. Skirt a bit shorter and she’d look like a drum majorette! Someone pass the girl a baton . . .

  2. Indira says:

The comments on the DM article prove that William can really do what he wants. So many comments who defend him just because he is Diana’s son.

  3. Megan says:

    I love a dog in a uniform.

  4. Digital Unicorn (aka Betti) says:

Part of me things that she is over him and his BS and has resigned herself to enjoying the lifestyle she has. If he’s looking miserable its not because of anything Kate said but more what Queen Carole said.

As for Kate and her buttons – she didn’t want to be outdone by the buttons on the military uniforms.

    • Chrissy says:

Well, she is known to be very competitive and a theme dresser, Betti. The sugars would be so disappointed if she didn’t show up with those damn buttons. (Well, at least someone thought about omitting the clutch on this occasion).

  5. Shambles says:

I find her love for buttons endearing this morning, but maybe I’m just in the mood to sympathize with her because her husband is a bumbling asshole.

    • HeidiM says:

Don’t the royal women normally get some sort of sashes and badges to wear? without her buttons she’s completely undecorated. She NEEDS some stinking badges~!!!!

      • LAK says:

The sashes and badges are given as a result of being part or head of an organisation that has those sashes and badges or for personal service to HM.

So far, Kate hasn’t met these 2 criteria and so she remains badge-less and Sash-less.

  6. MunichGirl says:

Of course she’s smiling but I bet she’s annoyed that 1) William got caught this time and 2) she has to “work”

  7. Lainey says:

It’s bespoke Catherine walker. Pretty much identical to her other coats by her just different colour. At least it didn’t fly up like the red one in NZ.
Not surprised that all she did is smile she’s not letting him go. Fought to long and put up with so much, the only way she’s out of that marriage is if he’s the one to end it.
Oh and they’re flying to London by private jet! Probably with a whole wardrobe of more new clothes.

    • notasugarhere says:

Another custom buttony, military design by Diana’s signature design house. SWF

    • ArtHistorian says:

Jeez, how many green coats does she own? Not as many as her blue ones but still more than enough. This is getting ridiculous! Outerwear are meant to be worn more than once.

I have two issues only with Kate: her work-shy ways and her spendthrift ways.

      • Lainey says:

Someone on Tumblr had worked out how much she’s spent so far this year- can’t remember how much it was, but it was shockingly high.Higher now after wearing three new outfits today alone. I think only one or two outfits this year have been repeats, everything else has been new. It’s ridiculous

      • ArtHistorian says:

At this point it might be cheaper for the British public to let her stay at home. It seems that she needs a new, hideously expensive bespoke piece everything she goes to “work”.

She has no idea how to build a practical and manageable wardrobe – separates and accessories are key here. Mix n’ match as well as a clever use of accessories can make all the difference fro a varied look without a overstocked wardrobe. She needs a stylist to help with her outfits and shopping – and probably someone to keep her wardrobe organized. That could take care of the problem of overspending on several near identical pieces. I actually think that she has no overview of her wardrobe hence some many near identical pieces.

      • ArtHistorian says:

        Lainey,

I read that it is somewhere around £20.000 this year already.

      • vava says:

it will be double that by the time the weekend is over. The Chanel coat she’s wearing today is almost $10,000. She has the matching dress under it, a new Chanel bag, and an ugly Chanel belt ($900 for that alone……).

  8. Clare says:

More pictures of that gorgeous doggy please!!

  9. Guest says:

What are the odds that the British monarchy will survive King William and the Middletons?

    • addie says:

I sincerely hope not. May they end their days in obscurity, living on their own money, being miserable in each other’s company. Nothing but a pair of useless tossers. If Brits need William and Kate to lead them, if that’s the best you can do, there is no hope for the nation.

  10. sarri says:

I just wanted to say that I’m glad that this website exists because if you criticize Kate and/or William on other certain websites you get attacked. I really don’t understand people who worship them.

    • notasugarhere says:

I understand it a little bit. They want something to believe in, a world where lovely people in castles do charity work and care about the little people. It beats reading the news to see what Emperor Baby Fists (CB you are brilliant!) has done to destroy people’s live today.

For many people, their eyes are opened at some point and they transition to discussion about the role of royals, how they perform in these roles, funding, history of the jewels, and what good work these humans are doing. But there will always be a die-hard pack of them who insist royalty is blue-blooded real and never does anything wrong.

      • IMO says:

        It’s all smoke and mirrors.

      • notasugarhere says:

Much of it is. But there are people out there who refuse to see it, because they want something simple, pretty, and Disney to believe in.

  11. Indiana Joanna says:

    The dog is so handsome.

    W&KM are duds.

  12. justsaying says:

    That’s a lot of makeup.

    • Chrissy says:

Yes, I noticed the extra lashings of blush too.

    • Maria says:

Probably to cover the fact that she hasn’t slept much these past few nights, and she didn’t want to look too haggard.

      • Disco Dancer says:

She looks pretty haggard and probably lost some weight over the last few days. No amount of makeup or a new bespoke coat can hide that haggardness.

    • Digital Unicorn (aka Betti) says:

She’s back to her old faithful makeup regime of slapping it on with a trowel, complete with overdone eye makeup. She looked so much better with the make up make over she was sporting – she looked her age.

  13. OTHER RENEE says:

When do you think that she realized that she is married to a buffoon?

    • Ankhel says:

      Redundant question.

She knew him very well before they ever married.

    • graymatters says:

If it weren’t for the social status thing, this would be a marriage of equals in many ways. Neither of them is particularly bright, graceful, or kind. They both respect the status thing (except when it comes to the elderly members of his family) though, so W doesn’t think he needs to respect anyone else’s opinion and Kate doesn’t think she needs to respect anyone else’s but his.

But I like the coat. New hat?

      • Indiana Joanna says:

They are a perfectly matched couple. For every Jack there is a Jill kind of pairing. As you say, Graymatters, both are venal, self absorbed, dim, clinging to their 20s, and pointless.

  14. Olenna says:

Sheesh, those !#@$%#! buttons, and on a 1940s coat. It’s too much. This chick is caught in a theme dressing time warp.

  15. Citresse says:

    That’s a genuine smile from Kate… haven’t seen that in a while.

  16. minx says:

I dunno, I like the coat.

    • Sharon Lea says:

I do too, but I was around during the 80s, where this was in. Its a classic look to me.

  17. alfaQ says:

Has she asked a clown to do her make up?

  18. COSquared says:

It’s a nice coat, but she already has a ton of green coats. Why get a new one? I internally gagged at the Beebs’ “Brexit Ambassadors” story about them. I am amazed at how a rugby game can be the centre to a foreign trip. Also, how can they flex their “soft diplomacy” muscles? Is there any anything particularly interesting that they can do? Seems like grinning and saying a few polite words will count as being them being diplomatic powerhouses.

    • Blu says:

You obviously don’t remember the controversy on here about her wearing the same coat *gasp!* From a few years ago. People (especially the American commentators weirdly), were raging that she couldn’t make the ‘effort’ to wear a different coat and compared it to a actress wearing the same dress to 2 oscars (???).

Makes me laugh to just remember all the pearl clutching!

    • notasugarhere says:

It also makes no sense to stick with green, when blue is more the regimental colour/color. The green in that insignia is from the shamrocks on it, but they give you shamrocks to wear. Queen Mum used to wear blue with them as did HM a lot (although thrifty Anne wore an old green coat). Wear their colour/color and the green can be the shamrocks they give you. KM wore brown one year, which went with nothing.

It is another example of her theme dressing. Like the low-cut gold flower dress in Malaysia causing problems, she didn’t bother to put enough thought into the theme dressing. St Patrick’s Day = Green, when it should be Irish Guards = blue + shamrocks.

Sophie and Camilla did this last week at the memorial service. Both were wearing the pin for being Royal Colonels of The Rifles. Camilla wore the green from their insignia, Sophie wore the black-and-red from the insignia.

      • addie says:

That’s too much thinking for Kate. I don’t think she would think beyond: “Shamrocks = green and oh, it’s St. Patrick’s Day = everything is green. I’ll wear green.”

      • Blu says:

Seriously?!? Holy nitpicking. Green is traditional to wear on At Patrick’s day, always has been always will be.

      • notasugarhere says:

Not nitpicking, logical. Royal ladies often dress in the colors of the regiment they are visiting. HM and Queen Mum often wore blue when visiting the Irish Guards and doing the shamrock bit.

The Irish Guards do not have green as their color, they have Saint Patrick Blue as the color. They even wear blue feathers in their hats, which you can see in the photos. Because surprise, the traditional color of the actual Saint Patrick isn’t green – it is blue.

  19. HK9 says:

As a cat person, I must admit I’m here for the dog. I love any dog that can look that smart in a red cape.

As an aside, I think Kate looks lovely and I also think the shades of green between the hat and the coat actually match this time. Overall, very nice.

    • Ankhel says:

She does look suitably dressed here. And she smiles prettily, for once. You’d almost think someone had coldly told her and Will to put their best foot forward. Naaaw.

    • Sharon Lea says:

The red cape is very stylish on the dog! He/She seems like a sweet heart too.

    • Ashamed 2 b a Fl girl says:

+ 1 for Kate and +2 for the dog!

  20. Prince says:

William seems to be o unhappy. I think even when he parties with his friends there’s a part in him which stops himself from being really happy. I think there was a moment he decided to be this unhappy, spoiled, lazy and work-shy man-child and now he sticks with it.

    • Bridget says:

You mean the part of him that deep down realizes that he’s a spoiled buffoon and that if he weren’t a prince no one would actually want to be his friend because he’s an utterly un-charming a-hole?

  21. amy says:

Wills looks like he wants to be somewhere else.

  22. Khaleesi says:

This woman is so robotic, it’s actually quite sad.

  23. Abby says:

I totally missed the news about will from last weekend. What a turd.

  24. Maria says:

Waity looks nice, hair not flying all over, and the outfit is nice. Buttons look good on her. But this is Friday and they probably had it out Monday or Tuesday. Willy looks smug…see I can do what I want because I am going to be king! But I bet it’s been chilly at home.

  25. Rose says:

I’m here for the dog, literally EVERY year. I’ll be devastated when he dies

    • Tough Cookie says:

He’ll be retired in a few years and another will take his place.

    • notasugarhere says:

I think they trade out / retire them before the mascot dies. Last trade out was 2012, and Irish wolfhounds live an average of 7 years.

      • Tough Cookie says:

They are called the Heartbreak Breed for good reason. I think Domhnall is now around 5 years old? So we will be seeing a new mascot within a year or two (I hope I am proved wrong on that!!)

    • justme says:

I love Irish wolfhounds. I had one growing up who lived to 13. Their motto is “Gentle when stroked, fierce when provoked” – but it was hard to provoke her – she took a lot. Only time I ever saw her angry at someone was when a woman spoke harshly to me!

  26. Citresse says:

I don’t know if anyone else has noticed but Kate’s legs sp- calves are looking thicker IMO. Not stick thin. Her legs look more like they did during the late stage of pregnancy with Charlotte and that’s a good thing. She looks well.

  27. NOLA says:

I’m not surprised that they’re putting on a good face for the public. I expect that out of public figures.

As for Kate, I think she looks lovely in green. I feel as though if you went into her closet, one side would be nothing but coatdresses and dresses with flyaway skirts, and the other side would be skinny jeans and nude wedges. School the American please: would it be considered disrespectful if she wore a pair of soft wide-leg / flared trousers with a nice top? Also, I wish she would wear white to this event. The all-green look seems too theme-y to me. Which wouldn’t bother me on anyone else but it annoys me with KM because she always seems to theme-dress.

    • dodgy says:

Short of say, being around horses or on their own time, The Royal women do stick to dresses with matching hats/fascinators.

  28. Kitty says:

    Well this is awkward.

  29. Starlight says:

William looks uncomfortable but Kate has done what I expected has put on a happy face to protect him from any gossip or bad feeling. I think that the next few days will be stoical smiley nothing to worry about. But he is going to be under the thumb now as she will demand respect from him and she is going to look ‘perfect’ in the public gaze.

    • Maria says:

Well I don’t know about getting Willy’s respect. I am not sure has has really ever respected her. She has made things too easy for him. But she does look like she has a slight edge on the pics, and for once she is not stuck behind.

  30. TheOtherOne says:

Sadly I’m delaying the start of the petty party and the petty playlist. Waity looks appropriate and dare I say happy. Waity you had one job so I can have my party and you crushed my pregame weekend fun. But like I said in a different post, maybe I’m that type of girl, but for me to show up to the Irish Guard and smile would require a cash payment into my private bank account, an account that neither mummy nor little brother can access.

  31. Lightpurple says:

Domhnall! Honking for Domhnall! More Domhnall!

  32. Tough Cookie says:

This has always been my favorite royal event because I’ve had wolfhounds for years. I’m still irritated with Kellykate for blowing it off last year. I wish The Queen had given this job to any other royal.
Also to me Waity looks the same every year. Green coat, green hat, green shoes. Yawn.

  33. Cerys says:

I’m not often complimentary about Kate’s clothes but I actually liked today’s outfit. It was perfectly appropriate for the occasion. Wearing green is maybe a bit unimaginative but I probably would have worn it too if I were going to that type of event.
With regards to the event passing with no drama, they were unlikely to play out any tensions in public. Even Charles and Diana put on a front at royal events until the final stages of their marriage.

  34. Magdalene says:

I was indifferent about the duchess in the beginning and still indifferent all these years later, can’t even dislike her

  35. Green Is Good says:

They both showed up? Do they get a reward for “working”? Oh, right. PARIS TRIP!

  36. Sequinedheart says:

Maybe after all the ski trip hoopla, she popped a xanax and everything was lovely again.

  37. Tough Cookie says:

There’s going to be a LOT of shopping therapy being done to make up for Willy’s behavior and (gasp) having to work several days in a row.

    • Chrissy says:

To get back at Wee Willie though, he’d have to fork out for the shopping spree. As it is, Charles pays for her work clothes. Wee Willie is a cheapskate extraordinaire, I hear.

  38. KiddVicious says:

I like the coat but the buttons need to be covered, I don’t like the in-your-face shininess of them. The coat is tailored well and looks great on her.

  39. spidey says:

    and there’s more:
    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4324570/Kate-Wills-begin-two-day-Brexit-charm-offensive.html

Sorry didn’t realise they had just updated the page.

  40. ls_boston says:

I really like iate’s outfit. Love the pooch but love her coat-dress more.
What’s wrong with me?! I never like a dress more than a dog.

  41. Anare says:

William looked like an afterthought. Good job Kate! 😀☘️

  42. Lia says:

The short guard standing next to William is certainly admiring Kate’s caboose as she admires the dog. We might have had a whole different side story if it had been windy and Kate had been wearing one of her short, flimsy dresses …….

  43. Tess says:

I would love this gig! Don’t they also get a nip of whiskey at the end?
