Melissa Joan Hart in a bikini on the cover of People

peoplemelissajoanhart
You don’t really hear much about former teen star Melissa Joan Hart of “Sabrina The Teenage Witch.” She had a couple of sons with musician Mark Wilkerson and did some made for TV movies like “My Fake Fiance,: an ABC family special about a woman hiring a guy (Joey Lawrence) to pretend to be her fiance. (I never saw it, but I’m sure they end up falling in love in the end.)

Hart shows up occasionally at events and in paparazzi photos but she’s not in high demand. That’s why it seems odd to see her in a bikini on the cover of People. People has been focusing on weight loss and gain on their cover lately, and these type of issue seem to sell well for them. The 33 year-old mother of two lost 42 pounds and that’s no small feat. Her body looks great and she kind of radiates that “friendly mom” vibe. I know this is awful to say, but I can’t help but snark about her hair! She’s on the cover of People – what is going on with that half-crimped flyaway style? Those short side bangs are awful. Anyway, our friends at CoverAwards said they didn’t even recognize Hart at first:

People Magazine has a few things going in its favor this week.

First, it’s People Magazine. You’d be surprised how many people simply buy this magazine because its logo is plastered on the top of the issue. (How long that lasts? That’s a good question.)

The next big win for People is that it convinced yet another star to pose in a bikini after losing weight.

Plus, a diet cover is always a stable seller on the newsstand – and People lucks out this week as it is the ONLY diet cover in the category.

So what’s wrong with this cover?

At first glance, I had no idea who this was on the cover – and that’s BAD!

Melissa Joan Hart is by no means an A-Lister and I really hadn’t heard too much about her weight gain before seeing this cover.

Bottom Line: Melissa Joan Hart is no Valerie Bertinelli

[From Cover Awards]

Cover Awards also posted this past People cover of Valerie Bertinelli. Bertinelli is posed sexier and also offers the angle of losing weight post-40. Still, Hart can be commended for her accomplishment while she’s running around after two boys. A lot of us can relate to weight gain with kids and this cover seems to offer hope for the rest of us moms still struggling with the pounds. People’s stylist should be ashamed, though. Her hair is a mess. (I can be a hair snob so I asked MSat about it – she also thinks Hart’s hair needs work.)

It’s Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Not Samantha, Celebitchy

sorry, god I loved that show!

  2. Celebitchy says:

Hahah I think I am getting confused with Bewitched! I will fix that, sorry!

  3. sarcra says:

Oh People… you’re so boring these days!

  4. HEB says:

I was really suprised to see this at first too…I didn’t even realize she was fat…although 155 pounds? Please I’d love to be 155. Although I’m 5’9″.

  5. baby fish mouth says:

so damn true. 15? if she’s 3 foot 9 that’s a problem. she looks like a swamp monster in the before photo, but i would bet that in real life at the time she was still attractive.

  6. baby fish mouth says:

    oops, I mean 155, not 15.

  7. Green Is Good says:

Always liked Melissa Joan Hart. From Clarissa explains it all, to Sabrina the teenage witch.

  8. Renee says:

Ahh, CB you read my mind. I absolutely love this girl, I loved her on Clarissa and she always maintained a normal life without scandal, but… the hair. Really.
It almost feels like they stuck her face on someone else’s head.

  9. Susette says:

I’ve got no problem with Melissa, and she looks great. But what’s up with whoever does the photoshop on People’s covers? They both have rough digitized edges along their curves.

  10. Magsy says:

Good for her but so what? All the photos are photoshopped anyway.

  11. kristin says:

Ugly bad hair? Wow you really are bitchy.

  12. Debbie says:

I think her hair looks cute! She looks better as a blond.

  13. mel says:

Why is weight always an issue especially after your pregnancy ends. It’s ridiculous that society expects women to drop down to their pre-pregnancy weight. I wish people could get over it.

  14. ChristinaT says:

wow, those photoshop jobs look really obvious… somebody doesn’t have a steady hand :/

  15. Jaclyn says:

113lbs? Yeah right. I doubt that.

How tall is she, though? She must be pretty short to weigh that little…

  16. RAN says:

She’s adorable! I felt bad for her when she gained so much weight, but good to see her getting it under control again. Yes, she’s about 113 – for whomever asked that – she’s around 5’2″, so that makes perfect sense.

  17. Granger says:

I love how that pose of Bertinelli’s accentuates her ribs. Yeah, that’s impressive.

  18. Cinderella says:

    Melissa does look great.

Maybe the hair is just a bad weave. I like the blonde on her, though.

  19. Hieronymus Grexx says:

So the new fashion is to prove to the world you’re not a pork sandwich by (carefully) posing in a bikini under flattering light, and are therefore still castable?

  20. aleach says:

“i realized i didnt have to be heavy just because i had kids”.

heavy? please. 155 is NOT heavy. everyone carries weight differently, & she looks like a normal woman in the before picture. she looks great now, but how realistic is it that the average woman is going to look like that not long after having 2 kids?
im glad i dont have a daughter, some of these magazines with these weight-loss stories can be dangerous.

  21. czarina says:

Actually, 155 lbs on a 5’2″ frame IS heavy (more so than on someone taller and bigger boned).
I personally don’t like the hair, but it strikes me as one of those ‘before and after’ effects–they are trying to make her look as different as possible from the “horrifying” photo (by the way, how soon after her last child’s birth was that picture taken? I think it’s asking a lot of any woman–even a celebrity–to bounce back to perfect shape within months of giving birth!)

  22. mauiqt03 says:

    Everyone sounds SO silly.
Go to weightwatchers.com for a weight assessment.
    Ok.. her height is 5’2 & she’s 113 lbs..
    she should be 109-137lbs & a 20-25 BMI.
It won’t kill her but YES it’s NOT good
for her to be 155lbs. A person who’s 5’6 tall can be 155lbs MAX.

Right now she’s on the verge of thin.
But congrats to her on losing the weight and looking great!

  23. I did not know this, I’ll think about it.
