Carmelo & LaLa Anthony have separated amidst rumors of his trade

2016 Tribeca Film Festival

I remember when Carmelo Anthony and La La got married back in 2010. Back then, I didn’t really care about either of them. But these days, I’m paying more attention, mostly because I watch ESPN while I’m at the gym, and there’s so much talk about Melo’s dysfunctional relationship with Knicks president Phil Jackson. I’ve also learned more about La La Anthony, who is seemingly BFFs with every famous African-American woman in music/sports/media. La La is tight with Serena Williams, Ciara, Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Kelly Rowland, Gabrielle Union and more. La La’s rolodex is tight. Melo’s is too – other players like him and respect him, and everyone’s sweating the gossip that the Knicks are close to trading him. Together, La La and Carmelo are sort of the dream power couple of New York, second only to Beyonce and Jay-Z (and even then I think La La has more friends than B). So what happens when a power couple separates? That’s apparently happening and it’s so sad.

Carmelo and La La Anthony are separated … TMZ has learned. Sources close to the couple tell us the actress and NBA superstar are now living separately. La La moved out of the family home last week and has her own place in NYC now.

We’re told the couple’s had ups and downs in the past, but the current NBA season has been extremely stressful on the marriage for several months. Carmelo’s been plagued by trade talks … with the Knicks looking to move him to another team.

Our sources say the split is still amicable. They were together just this past weekend at their 10-year-old son Kiyan’s basketball game. We’re told La La and Carmelo have NO plans to uproot Kiyan from his friends and school in NY. Problem is … it seems likely Carmelo will have to leave town, because just last week Knicks President Phil Jackson said it was time for him to go. Neither is talking divorce yet, just separation. The couple got married in 2010.

[From TMZ]

It sounds like La La is waiting to see if Melo gets traded and where. My theory is that she’s not going to uproot her life and her son’s life if Carmelo gets traded to a city that sucks. But what if he gets traded to the Cavaliers and gets to be teammates with LeBron? That’s one rumor floating around. Would La La move to Cleveland? That city is apparently in the midst of what some are calling “the LeBron Boom” – where suburbanites are moving back into the city because LeBron has made Cleveland cool again.

Yeah, and of course TMZ did a follow-up on the “real reason” Carmelo and LaLa separated… he maybe/probably knocked up a stripper. TMZ calls the woman a “dancer” at a “gentleman’s club,” which is just a fancy way of saying stripper, yes? Apparently the woman is more than six months pregnant and she wants Melo to pay for her baby expenses. LaLa is furious and sources say there’s no way Carmelo and LaLa will get back together, trade or no trade.

What is it with basketball players and cheating?

    • V4Real says:

      It’s not only basketball players

    • Mousyb says:

Apparently European soccer/football players are even worse. I think it has to do with all that money, constant travel, and constant groupies surrounding you. Its crazy amounts of temptation all around.

    • Craven says:

Its not BB, its professional sportsmen in general. First, working out increases testeresterone levels which means they tend to have high sex drives. Second, they travel alot for the job. Third, they attract a lot of easy groupies. Fourth, the macho locker room culture that normalises cheating. And I’m sure there are other factors.

      • Ange says:

Yep. I grew up around sportsmen and sports culture and always swore I’d never date a man who spent too much time around other men. They get into this revolting machismo and egg each other on and cover for each other, it’s gross. Didn’t matter who they had waiting for them at home they’d just go for the score so they could impress their idiot mates, women were nothing more than a thing to improve social status.

  2. Shambles says:

Yeah… when I saw “rumors of his trade” I thought it meant his trade, like basketball is his trade, and along with that come groupies and hookups.

There has to be some other reason, deeper than La La not wanting to move. I would honestly side eye her if she left him just because she didn’t want to move cities. Was he a basketball player before they got married? It comes with the territory and she should have known that. For better or worse, you know? But it sounds like that’s not the real issue.

Either way, sad for the kids.

  3. V4Real says:

Well she used to be a VJ/ host on MTV , I’m sure she met a lot of people in the business that way. I’ve seen a few episodes of her reality show when it was on. One of her close friends was a stripper.

I don’t think she would leave him because of a trade but getting an exotic dancer pregnant is a definite deal breaker.

    • eto says:

I would say getting ANYONE pregnant would be a no-go

    • Mousyb says:

Yeah agreed. Getting traded is just part of the sport/theyve been together for over a decade so I doubt they would end it for that. There have been cheating rumors since before they got married (from both sides). My money is on there was cheating/he got someone knocked up.

    • Craven says:

I never saw her show but I have always wondered what her deal is. I noticed that Beyonce cousin/assistant, Angie kept calling LaLa her best friend and posting pics with her on instagram a few years ago. I remembered it because it was so out of left field. Then recently as Kelly Rowland was promoting her new book on the Today Show she unprompted called LaLa her best friend. So out of nowhere imo. Then theres Ciara who I know I have heard use the BF tag on LaLa too. LaLa is afterall just the wife of a baller who hasnt really lived up to his potential. Is there a reason she is so deeply hooked on the arm of every black pop star in her age bracket? She circles the Kardashians too. I mean Gabby Union I could understand, not just because of Dwayne Wade but because she IS Gabrielle Union afterall. But LaLa baffles me.

I really suspect that she is a social climber who is just really really good at ingratiating herself and then exploiting insecurities to make these women feel like she is closer to them than she actually is. I mean how many women can one person be best friends to?

      • Lady Rain says:

She’s actually a pretty talented actress. She’s had a role on the STARZ channel show “Power” for several seasons and is pretty good (she plays a BFF role on it interestingly enough lol).

  4. Lucytunes says:

I hope that is not true. How awful!

  5. Lightpurple says:

Knicks finished out of the playoffs an that puts pressure on a team to make major changes. Anthony has never really lived up to his promised potential as far as bringing a team to a championship. But families manage to deal with trades, moves, and road schedules all the time. The stripper story seems to be more of the problem here.

  6. Kristen says:

Cleveland is an awesome place to be right now, but I don’t think Lebron deserves all the credit. Having winning sports teams certainly helps, though the uptick began when he was still in Miami.

    • Miss Kittles says:

2nd that! People moving to Tremont & Ohio City aren’t moving there bc of Lebron. Let’s not forget the Indians just made it to the World Series last year. Lebron himself doesn’t even live in Cleveland. He puts his money into Akron. Not sure where this site is getting their facts.
Anyhoo, it’s no secret Melo has been cheating on her for YEARS!! She just finally had enough. Good for her. She’s beautiful & could do far better. I’d have to agree he’s never seemed present in their relationship.

    • delphi says:

I’m the daughter of two Clevelanders (both born and raised there when it was far from “cool”), and I love that city so much. My heart belongs to the Cuyahoga. The people moving there now are the 21st Century equivalent of the yuppies who gentrified urban areas in the 80s, jacked up the property values, then hightailed it out of there for the expansive, icky “oleo acres” subdivisions once the economy dipped in the early 90s. I hope against hope that the new citizens really are moving in for the right reasons, but my gut won’t shut it with the unease. *sigh*

All that being said, basketball is like watching paint dry. I’ll just be over in the corner watching my baseball boyfriend Jason Kipnis, TYVM. Polish Boys and Burning River Pale Ales over here!

      • Miss Kittles says:

Burning river pale ale is my FAVORITE!!! Just had one last night! Great Lakes 👌🏻

      • BrandyAlexander says:

It’s all about the Edmund Fitzgerald for me!!! I left Cleveland almost 13 years ago, and would move back in a heart beat if it weren’t for that snow. I love going back and visiting in the summer.

      • lem says:

The “oleo acres” still exist in/around Cleveland but people are choosing to pay as much if not more for housing (much better housing IMO) in the city/inner ring suburbs specifically b/c they want to be a part of the revitalization of the city. Don’t dismiss us so quickly and assume we’re going to make the same mistakes of the older generations.

    • KB says:

We all wanna flee to the Cleve…

  7. Bitsy says:

They were never a dream couple and he Prince William’d her for 6 years. They got engaged 2004 but didn’t marry until 2010 and he was never really present in the relationship. I always got the impression that she was hanging onto him for dear life. He was her entry to celebrity life, not MTV.

  8. Margo S. says:

I went to Cleveland a couple years ago, and let me just say, it’s a great city. It’s really fresh right now with a lot of young people moving back. Kind of a hipster vibe but I dig it! Can’t wait to go back!

  9. lem says:

Clevelander here! I second the other poster who said that the City’s revitalization isn’t 100% because of Lebron (he does put most of his money into Akron, which is great!). The city has made a conscious decision to revamp itself and has done a fantastic job. I moved her 9 years ago & the changes in less than a decade are staggering– a lot of it comes from a younger generation finding this old city worth the effort. There is a real reversal of the suburban flight & a lot of the older communities are getting new life from these younger generations moving in and taking an interest in their communities. It’s a shame it gets such a bad rap in the national media.

  10. Prettykrazee says:

Carmelo has a no trade clause in his contract. He doesn’t have to go anywhere unless he wants to. I don’t think a possible trade is the reason for their separation.

  11. Mike says:

Always with the getting strippers pregnant. It isn’t like there are not enough cautionary tales out there. Dumb move by a not-so-smart- man.

    • S says:

I know. Cheating is gross enough, but being dumb enough to knock up the side piece is extra special sauce stupid. I mean, if only there was some inexpensive way for men to prevent pregnancy (and diseases, etc.).

      • Mike says:

I know, if only there was some sort of cheap thing available at every store in America for men to perhaps carry around with them in case they decide to cheat on their marriage with some random person. Oh, well maybe science will come up with something soon.

  12. Lyka says:

Ah, man. I wrote a snarky reply to someone who posted “whooooo?” on this thread about one of the biggest names in a super popular sport but it looks like their comment was deleted…

    • Daisy says:

Basketball isn’t that popular around the world though. It’s more popular than other sports big in America ( in Europe, it’s huge in the Baltic and Balkans, as well as Spain and France) but not everywhere. And Carmelo isn’t LeBron. It’s like an American not knowing who Modric or Iniesta are or something like that.

    • Arlene says:

To be fair I had no idea who he was either- until I read the piece .

  13. Jessica says:

Melo has a no trade clause, meaning they can’t trade him without him agreeing. I think he has held on mostly because NY is his hometown and for his family. I think he’s thinking of doing the trade chasing his championship ring and Lala is not on board with that at all, actually I think Lala was the one who pushed him to do the no-trade agreement. I don’t believe the stripper story.

  14. QQ says:

Lala Definitely is well connected as they come in the entertainment industry but I’ve read two things about this that I’m forwarding here:

Ever since the Whole “your Wife tastes like Honey Nut Cheerios” thing Lala is used as something of a cudgel to Carmelo and a great source of gossip/side eyeing of the situation

Someone said yesterday that he’s wasted his career in NY largely cause of her??

Lastly I’ve been hearing rumors about side pieces for a while now from the Shade Room.. it seems she was happy being his bonafide but there is a confluence of things with these two

    • BJ says:

I can’t stand The Shade Room they steal stories from smaller sites that really break stories like Fameolous and don’t credit them.

    • Lightpurple says:

His career with the Knicks hasn’t soared to the expected heights because he hasn’t had a full supporting team with at least two other players of his caliber AND, although he has great talent, he chokes at the free throw line during clutch minutes of playoff games. You don’t make it to the Finals if your star is floundering at the line. And you also have to be able to handle the trash talk. He brought himself nothing but ridicule from players of the 70s & 80s for being unable to handle trash talk that they considered “mild.”

  15. BJ says:

The woman is not a stripper, she is due in July and she is having a girl according to the blog who broke story about cheating BEFORE TMZ.
    Fameolousent

  16. Pandy says:

I don’t follow sports enough to know his playing history … but I LOVE the name LaLa! I wouldn’t think too much of anyone holding off a wedding for a six year engagement so it’s not surprising that he’s screwing strippers. Doesn’t sound like real commitment there, more like you’ve hung in this long so, okay. That being said – how hurtful and embarrassing!!! Jeez … hope he gets traded to a sucko city.

  17. Stephanie says:

This relationship has had its rumors for years. There are so many stories of her with other men that people were saying it was an open marriage. Y’all don’t remeber that crazy fight he got in on the court when he chased the other player into the locker room? The other player claimed he slept with her and she tasted like honey nut cheerios

  18. Bridget says:

No way is Melo going to LeBron’s team. He has to be the star, and has the superstar salary to go with it. There’s a reason why this guy has been rotting away on the Knicks.
