HBO wants to do ‘multiple spinoffs’ of Game of Thrones after the show ends

Alien: Covenant World Premiere

I have no idea why HBO chose to confirm this on Thursday, in the middle of everyone freaking out about the House passing their healthcare bill, but it definitely was an absurd and surreal moment on my Twitter timeline. Everyone was like “Paul Ryan can eat a d-ck” and “Say goodbye to your jobs, House Republicans” and then it was like “record scratch, HBO IS DOING WHAT?” So, what fresh hell has HBO cooked up for us? It seems that HBO has already “closed deals” with four writers to create Game of Thrones spinoff shows.

HBO has closed deals with four different writers to explore multiple possible spinoffs of “Game of Thrones.” The premium cable channel says that there is no timeline for development of the projects. “We’ll take as much or as little time as the writers need and, as with all our development, we will evaluate what we have when the scripts are in,” a spokesperson said.

The four writers are Max Borenstein (“Kong: Skull Island”), Jane Goldman (“Kingsman: The Golden Circle”), Brian Helgeland (“Legend”), and Carly Wray (“Mad Men,” “The Leftovers”). Goldman and Wray will each be working individually with novelist and “Game of Thrones” creator George R. R. Martin. “Game of Thrones” executive producers and showrunners Dan Weiss and David Benioff will be attached to the four projects, as will Martin, but will not write on any of them.

A spinoff to “Game of Thrones” — the most watched series in HBO history — has been a source of speculation for years. In recent months, HBO executive began to privately acknowledge that the network was searching for writers to develop ideas based on the series and Martin’s best-selling fantasy novels from which it is adapted.

[From Variety]

At first I was like “ugh, naked cash grab” and “if Martin is involved in this, it’s going to take FOREVER to come to fruition.” But then I thought about it for a little while and you know what? If they do it right, it could work. There are so many questions about certain backstories and characters, and I could totally see myself obsessing over certain spinoffs. So, obviously, I have some ideas. These are my pitches to HBO:

The Lady Mormont Chronicles. Obviously, we see Lady Mormont grow up and become Queen of the North at a young age. We see her in Badass Training, where she cuts grown men to size with simple glares.

Alien: Covenant World Premiere

The Bastard Bachelor of Winterfell. Every season, Sadface Jon Snow tries to find love and he passes out winter roses to each girl. Ginger Wildlings get priority!

Alien: Covenant World Premiere

Gendry: The Lost Years. Obviously, a show about the most important character, who has been MIA since like Season 3, I think. What was he up to? That’s the show.

Alien: Covenant World Premiere

Happily Ever After: Brienne & Tormund. Brienne and Tormund survive somehow and they get married and have babies in the North. This is a sitcom-y premise but seriously, I would watch the sh-t out of it.

Alien: Covenant World Premiere

The Onion Knight. A show based around Ser Davos, just running around and helping people, especially little girls who are about to be burned alive by their fathers.

And I would happily watch every one of these.

And while we’re throwing things at the wall, why not a series about an undead king who has to start making ice (🤓) in order to fund his kingdom’s pending attack on the next kingdom over. Call it “Breaking Winter.” And that spin off’s spin off, “Better Call Sam.”

  2. Babs says:

I want one on Jaqen. A girl could watch a man mop the floor for 5 seasons straight.

Good one! You made me laugh silently in my office 😉

    • Lightpurple says:

A woman could keep herself warm just watching a man breathe through a very long winter.

    • SolitaryAngel says:

I laughed so loud I scared my cat. *still snorting* I would watch the hell out of that! A man is hot no matter what he is doing; it is known.

  3. Digital Unicorn (aka Betti) says:

I like your pitches but what about these ones:

The Hound of Westeros – the story of a damaged man on a quest to make amends for a past who harbours a great love for a high born lady of the north

A Man – the story of the life of ‘A Man’ and how he came to Westeros

Chronicles of a Young Ned Stark – the story of escapades of one the greatest Lords of the North

Winter is Coming – the story of the first war against the White Walkers and their battle with the children of the forest

The Red Viper – the story of the (sex)capades of the deadliest warrior in and out of the bedroom

  4. Jenns says:

I love the fantasy of GOT, so I would love to see the first men come to Westros, the war with the Children of the Forrest, more on the White Walkers and the long night, dragons, ect.

    • Rachel says:

And the story about the long ago Stark who left Winterfell and traveled North to be with his wildling love. Who quite possibly became the Night’s King…

  5. Rice says:

Maybe “The Mad King”, “Beyond The Wall”, “Made of Stone” and ” The Brotherhood”. But I’d watch your shows, Kaiser.

  6. Fafo4 says:

I’m so happy!!! But it’s all prequels right? That’s what it’s all about right? They can’t make up new stuff up without the author. That would be unacceptable!!

  7. Heat says:

The spin-offs will either be very, very good…or terrible beyond measure. There will be no in between.

  8. Aiobhan Targaryen says:

It probably be too expensive because of the CGI, but I would love it if they explored a lot of the Targaryen history, there is so much they could explore: The First Blackfyre rebellion, Dance of the Dragons, the doom of Valyria and how the Targaryens moved to Dragonstone, Aegon and his sisters in Volantis and eventually conquering Westeros. I would watch all of this. Even if they don’t do any of that, I will probably watch because all of the listed writers have written things I have enjoyed. I also love that D&D won’t be writing a word on these shows, for now.

The shows will console and distract me since George refuses to finish the damn books.

  9. typhoid_fever says:

I’ll watch! I wonder how many HBO spin offs will get made before the book series is finally done?

  10. Skins says:

    No thanks

  11. NOLA says:

I am totally on board with a Lady Mormont spinoff and/or the Brienne and Tormund sitcom. ❤🙌

Personally, I’d love a prequel with young Cat, Lyanna, Ned, etc. The books are rich with backstory and it would be so cool to see it on-screen.

  12. QQ says:

And I will be here with my coins front and center like the GOT stan I am ( Yes I have an Illustrated History of westeros book sanctioned by GRRM)

  13. chlo says:

Here to profess my love of Littlefinger as I’ve done the past several posts! Haha I’ll watch Littlefinger and Sansa play house. (No but seriously. More Aidan Gillen on HBO!!)

  14. Va Va Kaboom says:

Well, I’ll definitely give any spinoff a chance. I wonder if they’ll have multiple shows airing simultaneously though. Part of me hopes they do because it gives them more time to flush out each story, but a series similar in format to AHS could be interesting too. Each season focuses on a different historical event within the ASOIAF universe. There are tons of stories that I would love to see on screen, especially the Dance of the Dragons, the Blackfyre Rebellions, and the First Long Night.

  15. Lightpurple says:

    Nymeria: Terror in the Riverlands

  16. Janetdr says:

Dunk and Egg (Sir Duncan the Tall and young Aegon if you haven’t read the stories). Much lighter in tone than the series.

  17. All_Damn_Day says:

How come the two female writers are working directly with George, but the male writers aren’t? That jumped out at me, and not in a good way.

  18. outoftheshadows says:

New series: “I Drink and I Know Things,” following the young Tyrion Lannister on his drinking-and-knowing-women-carnally tour, before shit got (really) dark in the Lannister family.

Obvs. will be a porn. Merry Christmas to me!

  19. Her H!gn3ss says:

YAY!!!! so many possibilites!! this just made me sooo happy!
