Daniel Kaluuya wore Fenty Beauty foundation at the Oscars, which is amazing

90th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

I doubt Daniel Kaluuya went into the Oscars thinking he had a real shot at winning Best Actor. His reward was the Best Actor Oscar nomination, which he deserved. I personally thought his performance was a lot better than Gary Oldman’s performance in The Darkest Hour, but that’s coming from a place of “holy sh-t, The Darkest Hour was complete and utter garbage.” But if someone else was going to take that Oscar other than Oldman, it was Timothee Chalamet, and years from now, Academy voters are going to be really embarrassed that they refused to give Chalamet the Oscar.

Anyway, back to Kaluuya. He walked the carpet and got a good seat at the Oscars, with several good cutaways. He gave Jordan Peele a big hug when Peele won the Oscar for Original Screenplay. My point? Kaluuya got some big screen time before and during the Oscars. He came into the Oscars knowing that. So of course he wanted his skin to look great on-camera. Which is why his makeup artist used Fenty Beauty foundation on his skin.

This is probably my favorite Oscar branding ever. Designers were sending out emails and tweets identifying which actress wore their gowns, jewelry designers were confirming which stars were wearing their special pieces, and meanwhile Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty team was like “make sure everyone knows that Daniel Kaluuya wore our foundation.”

Rhi-Rhi is a genius when it comes to branding…that is all…

    • SKF says:

Let’s be fair – this was likely her excellent team and not her directly.

      • Lala says:

I am being fair…she’s smart enough to hire the best…and listen to them….

      • Tiffany says:

But if this was Taylor Swift’s line, there would be no reason to think her people are behind it because she is such a spectacular business woman, right?

      • MandyPurr says:

YAAS Lala! Riri is smart enough to hire a brilliant team. I also second Tiffany’s thoughts as well.

      • SKF says:

Touché! I was actually thinking I should have added: “who she was smart to hire of course” at the end after I posted that. Part of her brilliance is definitely surrounding herself with the right team. I just want to give credit to the little guys behind the scenes who work so hard as well.

    • Wisca says:

I can’t imagine how many people with deep brown skin thought: next time, Fenty.

  2. aenflex says:

He was superb in that Black Mirror episode. Just great acting.

  3. Krill says:

Of course he looks good. Fenty gets just about every shade in both cool and warm. Its my sincerest hope that Rih politely sent over some samples to our girl Mindy. Her makeup artist is clearly still using a product line that treats people of color as an after thought.

  4. littlemissnaughty says:

Oh that is big. And I love it. Because men do wear makeup (especially on camera and red carpets in general) but you know that 90% of actors would NEVER allow this. Good for both of them but maybe slightly better for him. That’s a man in 2018, I love it.

  5. Diana says:

Fenty Beauty products truly live up to the hype! In love with their match sticks and beautiful lip gloss. It’s one shade that looks good on everyone.

    • Jen says:

I’m going to buy some this week after that “no transfer” tweet! My girlfriends and I were just talking about that “I don’t want to get my make up on you” hug we all have to do…so impressed it didn’t leave a mark!

    • Erinn says:

I got some sample shades from sephora a while back – I have tried and loved the foundation primer. Probably my favorite primer I’ve tried tbh. But the shades I received in the little packet definitely are darker than my skin tone. I might have to just break one out on a day I’m not going anywhere and test it out. My skin can be relatively difficult, so I’m actually glad I got some samples that I can test out first. But from what I’ve seen – it’s a beautiful line. And I think – for the first time ever – the lightest shade is going to be too light for me. The sephora color IQ thing pegs me at 120. So we will see.

    • Eden75 says:

I am going to be in Vancouver soon and am off to see if I can find a shade for myself. I am mixed and usually end up having to use two different foundations to get the right colour. I’m super excited, which really seems like a dumb thing to be excited about but I am.

      • LizLemonGotMarried (aka The Hufflepuff Liz Lemon) says:

        Hi Eden!
I think it makes PERFECT sense to be excited about having something that seems so ubiquitous finally work for you!!!

Things like makeup, hair products, and clothes can be a vital part of our identity, and being unable to have that look, whatever it may be, because of something unfair is incredibly frustrating.

I flew to another part of the country for presentations and meetings this week and my luggage was lost. I was honesty shocked at my own reaction, but there were thousands of dollars of products, tools, makeup, suits, heels, and accessories in there, and they shape how I am perceived and the image I want to present. I couldn’t just “go to the store” and find the red cape and discontinued lip color I’m wearing to present tonight. I literally did not have access, no matter the price, to what I needed, and I had a complete internal meltdown until they finally located my luggage. I have never thought of myself as inflexible or uptight, but I found my trigger this week. I feel a new sympathy for anyone who has that lack of access, due to race, ethnicity, gender, orientation, financial limitations, whatever. I knew it in theory already, but as a white, privileged female, I only got a 12 hour glimpse and I was ready to lose my shit.

I always had to mix two shades – I have medium olive skin and I finally have a foundation with olive undertones I am using Fenty 290 and it is amazing. No more mixing!

  6. T.Fanty says:

The tweet about the hug is pretty impressive. They have my money.

    • Tiffany says:

      Right???!!!

Like, that is a motivation to look into it because makeup on my clothes irks me.

    • Morning Coffee says:

Yes! I do digital marketing for a living, and that was stellar.

    • teacakes says:

ikr? Way to draw attention to the winner here, and also plug for the excellence of your own product!

Whoever runs that Fenty beauty twitter account is brilliant.

  7. Caitlin Bruce says:

Love this! Men wear make up on the red carpet all the time, even the crusty looking ones. Daniel looks flawless!

  8. Steph says:

    Love fenty foundation and highlighters

  9. Lucy says:

I still haven’t seen Get Out (SHAME) but he completely blew me away in Black Mirror. I’m sure he’ll have another shot, as will Timothee.

  10. sarita says:

I love this! Daniel looked flawless. I use Fenty foundation myself and it is gorgeous, I would recommend to anyone all day.

    • Wisca says:

I never wear foundation, but I am considering it. Could I put it on without all of the highlighting folks do?

      • MissM says:

Honestly it’s so full coverage you might not like it if you’re not used to wearing makeup unless you want to have it around for special events

  11. Lilith says:

Good for him. Dude is glowing.

  12. Cher says:

    Mindy Kaling needs Fenty.

  13. Jane says:

Can you please cover this gorgeous, talented, hilarious man more often? Especially his hilarious story of hugging Oprah!

  14. Barrymore says:

    Heading to Sephora now

  15. blndcvnthairs says:

    gorgeous skin

  16. Indiana Joanna says:

LOVE Daniel. He looked fantastic at the Oscars.

I’m going to check out Fenty. I don’t wear foundation but love lipsticks.

  17. Jussie says:

Love Fenty. I have a few of all of the products, and everything’s honestly amazing. The highlighters, the foundation, the setting powder…I think the lipsticks are my favourite. The pigmentation is so intense.

  18. FredsMother says:

Those lips, though. The lips alone can get it. Good set a smoochers on him.

  19. jferber says:

Love it!!! I’d like to get some of her make-up, too. Can I get it at Sephora?

    • starkiller says:

Yes, you can! Not sure of the in-store availability in all areas but you can certainly get it online!

  20. DesertReal says:

Just wanna throw in that it is so so so difficult to find shades that compliment and MATCH your complexion as a POC, and not look ashy, yellow, orange, or any variation in between. Years ago I just gave up on concealers and foundations and just settled for physicians formula mineral powders. Fenty has done an astounding job for people with richer, deeper, glowing skin. I’m honestly amazed, and wonder what they’d have to offer for someone like myself.
