Meghan Markle wears Mother Denim & a long jacket to the Invictus Trials

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle attend the UK team trials in Bath

Oh, lord, I forgot this was happening today. This is a pleasant surprise. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry did an event together in Bath, England. The event? UK Team trials for the Invictus Games, which is Harry’s baby. He makes appearances throughout the year now for the Invictus Games, which he started several years ago. Meghan, it seems, is going to be very involved too. Her first-ever official appearance with Harry was at the Invictus Games in Toronto last year. She sat next to him and they arrived and left together and there were SO many photos documenting all of it. That’s when we knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that they would get engaged.

As for Meghan’s look… well, I have mixed feelings. First off, this is the best she’s ever looked from the neck up. Her hair looks gorgeous, like she just had an amazing blowout (note to Meg: keep the hair person who worked on you today) and her makeup is lovely too – you can tell that she’s wearing makeup but she doesn’t look like a clownface. But the outfit, you guys. Could it be that there’s one fashion area where the Duchess of Cambridge has an edge? Because Kate can wear some sportswear. Kate’s learned how to look cute in a pair of sneakers and a puffy jacket or a cute, sporty pullover. Meghan looks like she’s doing Mad Max: Invictus Trials. The black jeans (by Mother Denim) are great. The Babaton for Aritzia long jacket is… too much. She would look completely chic if this was a different event. But it’s not.

Is this the end of the world? Of course not. But Meghan should have seen what Harry was wearing and changed up her wardrobe a little bit so they didn’t look like they were attending two different events.

    Heels in the grass?

    • Redgrl says:

Yeah – I noticed that too. And her pants again seem too long even with heels. Loved the Mad Max: Invictus Trials quote – that was funny! With properly hemmed pants this would be a good outfit – for a different event. And also agree her hair looks fabulous here.

    • Lily Randall says:

I think they are different shoes?

    • Livvers says:

Never thought I’d have an appreciation for Kate’s stupid wedges.

    • Masamf says:

That was my first question, why is Meghan wearing heels? If Meghan had donned her signature flats and maybe a hoodie, yes she would have looked fabulous, but wide legged jeans and heels? Nope, not for me. I love Kate’s outfits for sports and she (Kate) wins this hands down.

      • KBB says:

Maybe she just didn’t want to be dwarfed by Harry. She is significantly shorter than him when she’s wearing flats. Maybe she doesn’t like how it looks in photographs or doesn’t want to look short when greeting people. Heels probably get her up to around 5’8 and she may just feel more confident at that height.

      • Masamf says:

By this time, it is clear to me that Meghan is comfortable in her skin. Yes, her man is taller than her but that’s not the reason she wears heels IMO; because she has worn heels before while in the company of people shorter than her, and she has worn flats before while she is with prince Harry or other people taller than she is.
Speaking of prince Harry, have I mentioned how good he looks today? And I really love this boots on him, he looks really gorgeous. And dare I say, I have never seen prince Harry look so happy and proud as he seems here, I think he really feels at home and lets his guard down when he is among his service men and women brothers and sisters. And he proudly shows off his fiancé and you can see how pleased he is with himself!!

      • Veronica S. says:

She probably threw them on when she realized the jeans needed to be hemmed and would drag on the ground, otherwise.

      • Veronica T says:

KBB, even with heels I doubt Meghan is 5ft 8in, unless Harry is 6ft4in and Kate is 6 feet tall. She is significantly shorter than Kate – she only comes up to Kate’s nose when they are all wearing heels.

      • PrincessK says:

She is wearing heels because she knows that they are the best type of shoe to wear with that cut of jeans. She would have looked terrible wearing flats with those trousers.

      • KBB says:

        @Masam Maybe I’m just projecting because I’m 5’1 lol

@Veronica I just wrote 5’8 because when I googled it, it came up that she was 5’5. Some sites even say 5’7, which is absolutely laughable. I’m not great at guessing heights, but I agree that she’s significantly shorter than the other royals.

    • Hazel says:

That’s an English thing. Every year, at Ascot, I see all those women dressed up & in heels, walking across the grass. I always thought it was strange.

      • Rayan says:

You don’t wear heels to a running track! This was a miss. Ascot is different, one needs to be dressed up to attend.

    • Scram says:

It’s so silly. If she can’t bring herself to wear sneakers, then there are dressy flats (which we know she wears) or block heels.

    • Veronica T says:

Yup, Meghan is wearing heels to a sporting event. She is pretty short, so I think she always wants to look taller than she is.
Now, imagine the response if Kate had done this!! I am chuckling before I even scroll down to read praises for her stillettos in the grass!!! LOL!!

    • Sara says:

Who cares that coat looks AMAZING. Especially with the boot cut jeans. Maybe not sporty enough for this event but good lord, she looks FAB. I think Megan is so much more beautiful and stylish than Kate.

    • HelenaTroy says:

I am a fan and I think this looks ridiculous. It’s a sports event. She didn’t get it this time.

  2. i, pet goat 2 says:

I want those pants. PLEASE someone ID them for me
ETA: meaning the specific pair. Also, are those boot cut or flare I wonder?

    • LAK says:

      Bootcut. Mother jones jeans

      • isabelle says:

Bootcut, the jean (or straight jean) that looks good on most people. Wish they were more fadish than the skinny jeans.

    • Lahdidahbaby says:

Mother jeans, which is her friend’s line. She wears it a lot.

      • Becks says:

I wear a lot of Mother jeans. I absolutely love them and had no idea it was her friend’s line!

    • i, pet goat 2 says:

Yeah, I know they’re mother, I just can’t find the pair on the website. Have been searching both bootcut and flare. Thanks y’all, anyway! I’ll find a similar pair elsewhere.

      • Hazel says:

Mother, Runway Bootcut. I’m guessing past season. Nordstrom Rack has a pair in size 24.

    • Ashby says:

      @ i pet goat, 2 :

They are on the mother jean website for $ 196.00 : Runaway Not guilty.

  3. Nancy says:

She looks good. Her hair looks better, softer or something. She even somewhat coordinates with Harry, they don’t clash! I’ve given up on her sizing though…..girl can’t find a tailor to properly fit her pants. Try harder Meghan, you little pixie!

  4. Clare says:

Her hair and face are utterly gorgeous, but girl can’t fit a jacket!

Also, isn’t she a California girl? Surely they, of anyone, do casual well. Even Toronto ladies do casual with such style. She does appear to have some kind of zip up jumper on under the coat…so maybe she was just cold? No excuse for the heels on grass ball drop though. Almost as bad as Charlie wearing shoes on the beach yesterday. Heh

    • bettyrose says:

Nah, SoCal casual is something completely different from the casual that suits England or Pacific Northwest climates.

    • Hally says:

None of her jackets or coats fit because she should be buying petites sizes to fit her petite frame since she is fine boned, or whatever you want to call it. Without tailoring most structured pieces will be too broad shouldered for her. I noticed because I have this issue even though I’m definitely not as skinny as she is.

      • Rayan says:

Petite means short. It doesn’t have anything to with someone’s body size/weight.

      • Who ARE these people? says:

It’s both, I think? Petite sizes done right are supposed to be cut for smaller frames for example smaller shoulders and higher armholes, less volume on top, etc. It can work for shorter but not always. I agree Meghan would do well in finding petite coats and jackets but they’re harder to find and she’s probably used to just accepting the extra volume, plus she seems to need a lot of coats.

      • Rachel says:

@rayan no, petite doesn’t just mean short-the fit is overall cut down. I know this because I’m short legged, but am not a petite build. I’m curvy, just have very short legs, so petite cuts are too narrow in the hips for me. It’s annoying because finding short inseams is hard-and most still have to be hemmed for me 🙄🤷🏻‍♀️😂

      • bettyrose says:

Petite definitely used to mean short. The petite section used to have XL sizes. The cuts were for women with shorter legs/arms who don’t want to constantly roll up cuffs & sleeves, irrespective of hip and butt sizes etc . . . The meaning has changed to fit stylish concepts of small builds.

  5. Lahdidahbaby says:

Oh my holy goddd I want that Mother Denim coat!! WANT.

    • Kitten says:

I want the whole outfit. She has great style IMO.

      • Lahdidahbaby says:

I so agree, Kitten! I would wear almost everything she wears. I especially like her friend’s Mother Jeans line. Some super cute jackets and shirts.

O btw, last night I told my husband, “Shut the fuck up, Pickles!”

        He said, “…uh, what?”

I can’t seem to stop saying it.

      • FLORC says:

Same! I can’t really dislike most of her outfits. Even individual pieces.
Would I wear all? No. Does she pull off all looks? Yes!

      • bettyrose says:

Love this outfit! Thought I was looking at different pics than everyone else or something.

      • LoveBug says:

        @Kitten

Totally agree, she has a wonderful style in clothes & make up too.
Great, but light, natural looking make-up with that amazing skin that just glows & glows, also fantastic healthy looking hair and a lovely smile.
Her style is never fussy which I love, very streamlined and modern.
Only thing I would have changed : shoes.
I never like the look of heels on grass, as bad as dressy shoes on the beach.
I would have worn sporty/casual shoes/sneakers/boots without the high heel.
Very attractive woman, nice looking, happy couple.
I wish them all the best and I hope that they make a difference in the world, especially with the Orange HateMongerer in Chief in power.
I’m guessing she might be using some certified organic oils for her face & hair, like coconut oil, rose hip oil, jojoba oil and argan oil.

      • Hally says:

@ love bug, I would bet money she gets fancy laser treatments on her skin, Lainey gossip has alluded to it before, and I’ve dabbled with lasers and honestly if you have the money lasers give the best results. She might use some natural stuff for fun, but they won’t get you shin like hers (obviously genetics are helping her too). As for the hair she 1000% is getting it chemically straightened or treated. There’s not enough coconut oil in the world to take a girl from frizzy and curly to smooth and straight, and keep it that way in British weather!

      • Kitten says:

@ Lahdidahbaby- AHAHAHAHAHA.. that’s awesome! Did you feel better after you said it? 🙂

I wouldn’t be surprised if she gets laser gut honestly, she seems to have great genes in that her skin is just amazing. Major envy because I have to spend a lot just to get my skin to look decent. Sad face.

      • Lahdidahbaby says:

YES, Kitten, it had a pleasantly badass effect on me – and afterwards I just smiled mysteriously and didn’t explain it to him. But I did send you a mental salute right then. He just grinned in a puzzled way and shook his head.

        PICKLES POWER!!!

      • HelenaTroy says:

        @Hally
I do lasers each year too. I’m not a celebrity and don’t have a six digit income. I’m Torontonian. While lasers do range around $2000 on average, they are not prohibitively expensive, especially considering how much I save from expensive cosmetics and facials which I use to buy before. And I completely agree, nothing compares to the laser, to me particularly important are the tightening ones. I only wish it didn’t hurt so much.

    • Chloe says:

      LOVE Meghan ,she looks great.
She and Harry are so good together. They seem so in sync on their Royal outings.

      • LoveBug says:

        @Hally

You are most likely right, genetics, lifestyle choices and laser might be the reason for her great skin and lovely glow.
I very reluctantly started using certified organic oils for my skin and my hair a few years ago, because my Nana convinced me and I have to say that she was right.
It does work really well and it’s not loaded with bunch of chemicals that I can hardly pronounce and many times had no idea what they are, plus the cost for the fancy model/actress advertising it.
It costs less like my all time favorite rose hip oil by Kosmea, just amazing for my face and great for the ends of my hair after I brush my hair.
A little goes a very long way, but I understand that she has access to things I don’t, so why not do it.

      • Kitten says:

@ LoveBug- I have tried oils in the past but unfortunately with my combo skin it would just leave me shiny with breakouts.
I do use the certified oils on my hair though (Argan etc) and they work great.

If anyone is interested in trying face oils but has combo skin like me I would HIGHLY recommend two brands: Soco and Ogee (you can find both on Amazon). The Soco brand has a blend of Neroli, Sea Buckthorn, Rosehip, and CoQ10 and it is a DRY oil that is just amazing. The Ogee Jojoba Restore oil is really good as well.
But yes, ITA that oils can work wonders–you just have to find the right one for your skin type.

      • PrincessK says:

Yes, in sync is the word!

      • Hally says:

        @lovebug and kitten

I’ve tried organic oils to varying success, coconut is a no go for me on both skin and hair, I tried rosehip and really liked it at first but then it threw something off in my skin and I have flaky dry patches for the first time in my life and related pimples! I was pretty disappointed with that to say the least and I’m still trying to combat these new issues…

On the positive side, I spot treat with tea tree oil on my face to great success and use a few drops in about a spoon of castor oil on my scalp as a pre shower hair mask and it’s really cut down on frizz and dandruff and upped softness and shine.

It really does differ person to person!

      • Liberty says:

Gossip and wonderful beauty tips! I love it here

      • magnoliarose says:

One of the things I always do is finish my skincare routine at night is squalane oil. Not squalene from shark liver but squalane from olives. I use it as an occlusive. I also mix oils with a few drops of rose oil. But my favorite is oil from Japan made from rice bran. I use it all over and even my hair, and if I had only one oil, it would be that one.
I have spent too much on overpriced items when I find the best products from Japan, Korea or Taiwan chock full of pure ingredients. La Mer is nothing compared to some of my favorite brands. My skin has never looked better by my own hand, and I don’t need complicated facials as often.
Ginseng, fermentation, and sake are my latest ingredient obsessions.
I could discuss this for days, so I better stop myself. lol

    • auntlou says:

Huffington Post is reporting that the coat is Aritzia?

      • Lahdidahbaby says:

If it’s Aritzia rather than Mother (which Meghan wears a LOT of — it’s her friend’s label), that might explain why I couldn’t find it.p on Mother. I’ll check Aritzia. Really would love to have that coat and I know I’d wear the hell out of it.

    • BooBooLaRue says:

Me too she looks so chic!

  6. the better bella says:

    Love the outfit.

  7. klutzy_girl says:

They actually did match! Here’s some pictures of them inside

    https://twitter.com/RoyalReporter/status/982239494148538368

    • TheOriginalMia says:

Thanks for the link. She looks good! They both do.

    • Alexandria says:

      Woah booty alert

    • magnoliarose says:

I guess the other photos were taken earlier or something. They most certainly match.

    • Masamf says:

You know what? Now seeing these I think its an appropriate outfit, she matches her fiancé and they both look really good. I guess I take my first post back, huh!! SMH, Im eating crow now, LOL. @klutzy_girl, thanks a bunch for the link.

    • TeamAwesome says:

Good grief on the comments on that link!

  8. minx says:

Just LOVE that coat. She looks beautiful.

    • Lahdidahbaby says:

I have to have that coat. I want it.

    • magnoliarose says:

I love the coat too. It is a perfect casual everyday coat.

      • Lahdidahbaby says:

Yes! I would wear it every chance I got. But I didn’t see it on the website. Tried Nordy’s, too, because they carry Mother, but no dice. DID see the coolest Mother olive washed-denim embroidered workshirt/jacket, though, same color. But damn, it’s that coat I have to have. So easygoing and no-try, which is my preferred mode. Damn.

      • magnoliarose says:

I remember the knitting thread, and we discussed comfy clothes, so I have a good idea of the things you like from your comments. I need no fuss clothes because of my child posse, but it doesn’t mean I have to sacrifice style. I just have to be able to play, chase, kneel, carry get from place to place quickly without looking like a schlub.
I want this jacket. If I find it online, I will let you know. Otherwise, I am going to have to go next level and play fashion detective.

      • Katie says:

It’s from Aritzia – a brand from Vancouver, Canada. As a Vancouver resident I’ll admit that the brand makes up 80% of my wardrobe!
FYI, I’m 5’5 and about 130 pounds (around a size 4 in most American brands) and I would wear a size S In the tenches- they tend towards an oversized style
        https://www.aritzia.com/en/clothing/coats

      • Rayan says:

Ladies, She’s wearing the Artizia trench coat. They’re all on their website. There are so many nice designer trench coats out there, you just have to find the colour and fit you like.

      • magnoliarose says:

        Thanks Rayan and Katie! 🙂

      • Lahdidahbaby says:

YES, thanks Rayan and Katie! Wish I’d seen this earlier! It’s now past midnight and I’m just home. Gonna try, but I bet they’re sold out.

And MagnoliaRose, I believe you do have a good idea of how I dress — I think we probably have some very similar items in our wardrobe.

        And now: Off to Aritzia!

  9. TheOriginalMia says:

I thought you would have had a problem with the heels. Didn’t even notice the trench coat.

  10. Eliza says:

The trench doesn’t add anything. She has the official invictus games fleece underneath she should have shown off.

Maybe she is not comfortable with her recent weight loss and is trying to wear bulky clothes to help add size to her small frame? Otherwise I don’t understand all the huge coats she keeps wearing she surely has time/money to buy/tailor coats to fit.

    • KBB says:

She took both jackets off inside so I don’t think she’s uncomfortable. She has been swimming in all of the jackets she wears, I’m not sure why they aren’t tailored better.

      • Hally says:

Straight sizes off the rack are made for thin but broad shouldered models, she has a narrower petite frame and should be buying clothes in petite sizing but I’m guessing most of the brands she’s going for don’t offer petite options. I can’t say why she isn’t having them tailored, other than she doesnt want to bother with the hassle of tailoring? Honestly she might not even notice how badly they fit. Personally, it took me a long time to figure out I should be buying petite tops for a better fit, but I thought I wasn’t “small” enough. It’s really made a difference, though.

      • Tallyhoo says:

The problem with petite sizing is then the waist is often too high, and sleeves and hem length too short.

      • Hally says:

@tallyhoo, you bring up a good point! But Megan isn’t tall and she seems like she has long legs as opposed to a long torso (the opposite of Kate, who raises the waists on her dresses to appear long legged), so I think she could make petite sizing work for her.

    • PrincessK says:

I am concerned that she will lose too much weight before the wedding…she needs to get stuck into some puddings.

    • Lady D says:

“Maybe she is not comfortable with her recent weight loss”….or maybe she’s thrilled by it?

      • magnoliarose says:

We don’t know, do we? I have a feeling stress is at work, and she is a stress noneater. I lose my appetite when I am nervous, stressed or anxious. Then I look like I just got off a month long crack binge.
It isn’t cute or attractive in the least.
After Meghan took off her coat, she doesn’t look as tiny, but she has tiny lower legs, so she looks extra thin in some outfits.

  11. Cher says:

Actually, I don’t mind the outfit except for the heels. Sneakers would have worked better. A dark leather sneaker, maybe!!!
She wasn’t participating, as Kate usually does, so no need for full on sportswear.

  12. Whatever says:

Are these royal ladies allergic to tying their hair back for windy outdoor events?. There are pictures of her looking like she’s been dragged through a hedge. The coat is nice I’ll give her that. Not a fan of the hem on the jeans and the outfit would have looked better if she was wearing trainers/sneakers.

    • LAK says:

Regarding the shoes….she’ll learn. It took Kate several years before she stopped wearing high heels and high heeled Wedges for sports events.

      • Whatever says:

In the early years of marriage she did mixed it up a bit. She wore wedges to sporty events but she also wore trainers and flat shoes to some others as well. Now she just wears trainers which I guess is more appropriate but its not an entirely new thing she’s doing.

      • LAK says:

Whatever:No she didn’t. It’s only after she had George that she started to wear trainers at sports events regularly.

Prior to that, the one time she wore trainers was memorable because it was not something she did. She arrived at the event in heels, changed to trainers and back to the heels. Ditto the 2 times she wore boat shoes. Once on dry land she changed back to her high heels on both occasions.

The fact that she never wore trainers at sports events AND played in heels was ongoing chatter across all royal forums and on royal threads, this one included.

    • llamas says:

Yeah I noticed that too. There’s a couple photos where you can’t even see her face because it’s completely covered with hair. Both she and Kate need to work on that.

    • PrincessK says:

When she ties her hair back she got slated for having a ‘messy bun’.

      • magnoliarose says:

As she gets more familiar and it becomes routine, she will learn what to do when and for what occasion.

      • Whatever says:

There are other options besides messy bun and hair down and all over the place. A pony tail is just one example.

  13. Needlehole says:

I’m not a MM fan at all, but I muse say her clothing choices are bang on. She always looks so well put together. I’m especially fond of her choice of footwear.

    • Beth says:

I like her clothes, but they’re often ill-fitting and it ruins the look. This is the first coat I’ve seen her wear that wasn’t swallowing her up

  14. Lucy says:

I agree that it’s not the most appropriate outfit for this occasion. Maybe a nice pair of sneakers would have been better suited + a lot more practical. That being said, it IS a great look. I’d totally wear something like this.
EDIT: I also love the trench coat the lady walking next to her is wearing!

  15. Nicole says:

I wish she was wearing sneakers and I have yet to like any jacket she’s worn. Something about jackets on her are not fitted correctly. They seem to swallow her frame.
    Those jeans are a win

    • Lahdidahbaby says:

That’s odd, because this is the first coat I have actually LOVED on her. All the others were beautiful but they were belted, so with her petite frame they sort of swallowed her. I think this one is so cool! I want want want it.

      • magnoliarose says:

Agreed. Oversized coats are on trend for 2018. They were all over the runway. I like them.

      • minx says:

This is also the first coat I’ve liked on her. It’s a little oversized and looks like it is meant to be that way.

      • Liberty says:

I love the coat too. She looks wonderful. And yes, oversized coats are a thing now, as Magnoliarose noted, and I like them as well.

  16. Skylark says:

Do Americans call coats jackets? I’ve noticed it quite a bit on here when describing an outfit. Above is a coat, not a jacket. Jackets extend to max mid-thigh. Anything longer than that is generally referred to as a coat. Above is below the knee = coat.

Anyway, it’s beautiful, love the khaki colour and it works beautifully with the black.

    • Olenna says:

I don’t know about others, but I’ve always called a coat (mid-thigh and below) a coat, and a jacket (above mid-thigh) a jacket or parka. They are distinct designs, IMO. Agree about MM’s green trench; very nice. I had an a-line raincoat years ago in nearly the same color and regret to this day I gave it away thinking it was out of style.

    • Lahdidahbaby says:

Yep, if it’s close to the knee or longer I call it a coat, even if it’s denim or some other lightweight fabric.

    • Bethany F says:

i’m an american and have always used jacket to mean something light weight, like a rain jacket, and coat for something heavy, like a winter coat. never considered the length but i live in a northern state where it’s more about warmth than length anyway

    • Jaygee says:

It’s a regional thing. East coasters tend to say coat, west coast tend to say jacket more. Personally I’ve said jacket for like puffy nylon things and coat for a cashmere pea coat or knee length dress coat.

    • magnoliarose says:

Depends. It is never very cold in Southern California, so outwear is light, so it is called a jacket.
On the East Coast, there are distinct seasons, and a coat is used, or heavier outwear and a jacket is light but shorter than a coat. At least that is my understanding.

    • Skylark says:

Thanks, all! I was just curious as I often find myself on here thinking ‘that’s not a jacket, why are you calling it a jacket when it’s plainly a coat!’ My side of the pond, the length rather than the weight is generally the distinction.

Interesting re the jacket = something lightweight and coat = something heavier/cold weatherish. That makes sense @Bethany F.

    • Anastasia says:

For me, it has nothing to do with length. Jackets are made from lighter fabric, and coats are heavier.

    • Julianne says:

I agree with others that it’s not about length, it’s about weight. Lighter=jacket and heavier=coat regardless of length. I’m from the Midwest, so possible a regional distinction.

  17. Svea says:

Yes they did match. She has a track jacket on too. Think she got cold so put on the coat.
It’s cold AF in the States so I can easily imagine it’s cold in early Spring in the UK. Bone-settling cold here.

    • minx says:

OMG will we ever see spring? Freezing.

    • Olenna says:

The mid-Atlantic area is expecting snow tomorrow, and I’m blaming Punxsutawney Phil for this mess.

    • Beth says:

Please send some chilly weather to Florida. I’m not ready for the 90° weather yet. I miss having real winter weather

      • MellyMel says:

Not sure where you are, but here in N. FL it’s chilly for this time of year.

      • Beth says:

I’m in Orlando. Was chilly for a while, but it’s back to the high 80’s already. I wish winter lasted longer

    • Skylark says:

It’s lovely here in the UK today – blue skies and sun – but it’s still unseasonaly cold.

    • Lady D says:

British Columbia is under a cloud.

      • Masamf says:

Ha Haaaaa, the rainy, cloudy Beautiful British Columbia, you just have to love the rain, LOL. Back in 2006, I remember it rained for 29 days straight day and night without letting up, not even a minute. They said it that ran broke a previous 27 day rainfall which was I believe in the 1960s. Anyways, I live in Mississauga now but today its bone chilling cold cold cold. Stay warm y’all CBers..

      • OriginalLala says:

Ottawa is a brisk and cloudy 4 degrees today! finally spring weather 🙂

      • Maria says:

Toronto was zero today and cold.

      • magnoliarose says:

I love BC even the rain. I am supposed to go to Montreal, but I am not sure if it will be snowing. I am tired of cold. Usually, I don’t mind winter, but this is too much. Even the short breaks from it aren’t enough.

  18. YankLynn says:

We know she owns and wears cute flats so I’m surprised she didn’t wear a pair for this outdoor event. Maybe her footwear choice is because of the pant length. She has to wear a heeled shoe with those jeans whereas the ripped jeans she wore at the famous first Invictus outing were a good length for flats. But I bet she was muttering oaths to herself the first time one of those heels sank into the grass.

    • Olenna says:

I think she chose boots because of the jean length, but I’m sure she realized they weren’t the best choice after she started sinking. She seems to go for a long, sleek look in her pants/trousers but most off-the-racks are going to be too long for her without some hemming and/or tailoring which, in turn, could take away from the desired look. Maybe she’ll invest in some designer joggers or ankle length jeans so that she can wear low-heeled shoes in colder weather and athletic events.

    • Whatever says:

Cute flats or trainers together with any cigarette trousers she has worn to previous events, the Invictus polo shirt and the trench coat the lady next to her is wearing would have made the perfect outfit. And not forgetting a nice sleek ponytail to finish off the look.

    • Harla says:

I work with a woman who wears 4 inch heels all the time. We went once to an outdoor arts and crafts fair, where the ground is uneven with wood chips all over, and she wore a pair of 4 inch wedge sandals. I was scared the whole time that she was going to break her ankle but she just fine. She looked super cute but a bit out of place in those heels.

    • magnoliarose says:

There are indoor activities, and she isn’t wearing the coat and she and Harry match. I am not sure how long they were outside.

    • Erinn says:

I don’t get that, though. I’m 5’2″ and I just don’t try on anything other than petite length jeans. There’s plenty out there, so I’m really not sure why her pants are always so long. Even if there weren’t petite offerings – it really doesn’t take long to have pants hemmed.

  19. Jayna says:

I love her outfit. She looks great.

  20. Harla says:

I’m just thrilled that she didn’t wear skin tight jeans and a stripped shirt.

  21. Keepitreal says:

Fly away hair and constantly touching it: check
    Over large coat: check
    Floppy bootcut jeans/trousers: check
Everyone saying she looks great and they must have that outfit: check

The woman next to her in the trench has the perfect outfit on for this event!

    • PrincessK says:

Yes, I love the trench coat the woman who was showing them around was wearing. It was perfect.

    • Argonaut says:

keep touching that hair meghan. all these women here getting upset that their rules for what is and isn’t professional are not current anymore and don’t apply for a woman meghan’s age. it’s out of date to say a woman with long hair needs to tie it back and not touch it to be professional!

  22. WMGDtoo says:

I’m curious. Would someone marrying into any Royal family have to have some fertility examinations to make sure they are able to have children before the marriage could be approved. Because in every Royal family there never seem to be any issues with conceptions.

    • katie3 says:

I think they stopped doing that around the time of Diana & Fergie’s entrances into the rf.

      • LAK says:

They stopped having that much earlier. Centuries earlier.

Diana and Fergie didn’t have it though the media started a speculative conversation about it (and a virginity test) which took on a life of it’s own and consequently everyone became convinced that they’d had the test and or it was a requirement.

Kinda like the urban legend that Camilla was nixed first time round because she wasn’t a virgin. Not true, but people believe it to be true.

  23. Jane says:

She looks gorgeous today. Wish she had worn flats, but that only a tiny quibble.

  24. Jay says:

I am just WILLING her via cosmic communication to pull her hair back into a sleek ponytail. She seems to have limited herself to two styles: down and BLOWINGEVERYWHEREINHERFACEALLTHETIME or a messy bun that is perpetually one loosened bobby pin away from being just plain ol’ unkempt.

So far every single look of hers is about 90%: alllllllmost there, but off just enough to not make me go “wow!”

    • magnoliarose says:

I am not all the way there yet either. I like the potential and see how her looks can be improved but not bad for a start. Actually very good for a start. She’s spending her own money, so I consider that when I judge her outfits.

      • emerald eyes says:

The jeans are giving me life. I think they are a great way to do casual and sporty without going skin tight.

Not entirely thrilled with the coat pairing, but like I said downthread, she is still beautiful and charming so there’s that small fact ; )

  25. Ally says:

That boot/boot-cut jeans combo is straight out of 2002. I’m sorry, but this outfit is bad. Black daytime eyeliner, heels on grass, knee-length trench, all at a sporting event. I know everyone wants Meghan to be perfect, and everyone obsesses over the fact that she is truly beautiful and wears formal pants instead of prim doilies, but her style is often lacking.

    • Ashby says:

      @ Ally

I love that she is not wearing skinny jeans all the time.
I’m sick and tired of skinny pants and jeans everywhere I look.
Especially the type Kate likes, nearly skin tight, it’s really hideous.
It’s nice to see different styles of pants on her.
The heels on grass looks ridiculous to me, it doesn’t work.
You make a great point about the black eyeliner, too much and she can carry it off better than lighter skinned and hair/eye people.
It really ages SJP and Kate.
I love the trench coat, since she is not actually participating in any sport here, just observing.
She is very beautiful, has great charisma and spark.

  26. Giddy says:

Head to toe I think she is gorgeous. She is the picture of happiness, and she and Harry have such a lovely connection. As Denture Donnie continues to embarrass us in front of the whole world, I’m proud to have Meghan represent us.

    • Linda says:

      What is wrong with dentures?

      • Anastasia says:

Nothing except when they look bad and you can easily afford implants.

      • Beth says:

Nothings wrong with dentures. He’s been called #Denture Donald since they started falling out and made him slur during a speech.”God blesh the United Stashhhs.”

    • Veronica T says:

I prefer a woman who earns her own fame, not marries into it.

      • Bailie says:

        @ Veronica T

        Interesting.

        So,

what would you do, if you would happen to fall in

love with a very famous guy?

Walk away, because you are not as famous as he is?

      • Masamf says:

Ha Veronica this is an amusing statement. If I din’t know you as an ardent Kate Middleton fan, you could have fooled me.

    • Jane says:

I prefer different styles of pants.
It’s boring to wear skinny pants all the time.
      Variety is a good thing.

  27. Shotcaller says:

Ballet flats would have been awesome. Tbh it’s hard to notice much beyond her energetic beauty. I’ll bet she crackles in person!

    • Adele Dazeem says:

Agreed. Although…one thing I do recall about the whole bootcut/flared jeans trend of the 2000s is that if you’re petite or have short legs (as I do), you can’t really hem the jeans or they lose the proper proportion/bell/boot shape and it ruins the whole look. I remember fretting back then that I couldn’t really pull off bootcut/flares w out wearing heels to lengthen my look. I wonder if that is what drove the boots w heels decision.

  28. Linda says:

I dont like a lot of what she wears but I like this. Except different shoes and a little shorter jeans. Love how she is sticking her tongue out slighly to concentrate . It is something some members of my family do. And i mean that in a nice way. Makes her seem more natural.

  29. emerald eyes says:

    I need those jeans.

Maybe a little too much flappy coat but my heavens she is both beautiful and charming.

  30. MRsBump says:

Her face is absolutely gorgeous. Clothes meh as usual.
Today she’s dressed on the business casual end of her usual boring office wear spectrum. I keep waiting for her to kill it with her style (being an actress who had her own clothing line no less) but i’m routinely disappointed. Never thought i’d say this, but I’d rather look at the stuff Kate wears, good or bad, its at least interesting.
Meghan just wears stuff that my colleagues and I already wear (albeit much less expensive versions) and i wouldn’t call us stylish.
For the sort of money she spending on burberry coats etc, she’d be much better served hiring a stylist and maybe even shopping the london High Street

    • Amelie says:

Meh if she wore some “killer outfit” as you describe here then she’d be lambasted for taking away the focus from the Invictus Games! I think that’s why she’s wearing all black. It’s boring we aren’t talking about her killer outfit which is good. I don’t think she should have worn booties to this event but that’s really the only thing that’s wrong with the outfit IMO. I guess a different pair of jeans too if they are bootcut and too long to be worn with flats or sneakers.

I like the coat too. I don’t mind it with the outfit though I wonder why she didn’t go with a zip up hoodie sweater like Harry to promote the Invictus Games.

      • MRsBump says:

Im pretty sure she could look stylish, occasion appropriate without breaking the bank and not take attention away from the games. All these things are not mutually exclusive. Wearing heels to an outdoorsy event is what’s attracting attention here. I’m just disappointed with the continued office style. I feel she could push the boat out a little more.

    • NYCTYPE says:

      @ MRsBump :

I like her easy going, no fuss style.
I love that there are NO patterns and shiny buttons everywhere.
Kate dresses too old for my taste.
Meghan picks good quality fabrics in lovely colors.
Classy looks, not crazy trends, well that mushroom hat was awful.
She usually has a good shoe game, but I don’t like heels at this event.
It doesn’t work at all here.
I would have worn my hair in a ponytail and put on some more casual looking shoes/boots or runners without such dressy heels.
      The rest I like.
She just needs to do a bit better with her hair it’s all over place in the Daily Mail picks.
Her pants are sometimes dragging on the ground, like in these pics and the black eyeliner should go.
Even though her coloring is darker than say Sarah Jessica Parker, who looks older with all that black stuff around her eyes.
I think the royal rules are quite strict, most eyes are on her, so she has to be careful.
Regardless that she was an actress with her own clothing line, now she has to follow a protocol.

  31. Digital Unicorn says:

As someone who loves coats she has good coat game, I likely this one. Not too fond of the flare jeans.

    • NotSoSocialButterfly says:

I don’t mind the boot cut so much (it’s a bit too flared, though), but I’d rather see them in a dark blue wash. Too much black with the loden trench.

  32. Dr Mrs The Monarch says:

I bet she will wear things that hide her midsection as much as possible because every photographer is going to be on permanent “bump watch” for the next ten years of her life. Also, I understand the heels since she is so much shorter than Harry and they are always pictured together.

  33. Anastasia says:

I don’t see anything wrong with anything she’s wearing, though I do agree on tying the hair back when it’s windy out!

  34. Katherine says:

On a purely superficial level – they look so visually pleasing together

  35. Petty Riperton says:

Of course her hair looks good she just got back from Cali where they know how to do her hair there.

    • Hally says:

I just want to know how she gets her hair done. I’m thinking original Brazilian blowout? Like the one with all the chemicals that actually worked…

  36. ladida says:

I’m glad that bootcut is coming back in fashion, it’s so flattering.

  37. Sage says:

I like the boot cut jeans because I’m over the skinny/jeggings. The rest of the outfit is a miss. Stiletto boots on grass? Flats or sneakers would have looked better. The outfit is just too dark. A white shirt or a lighter colour coat would look better.

  38. Tata Mata says:

    Stiletto heels on gras. Yep.
And yes, she keeps losing weight.

  39. Sherri says:

I think that she looks happy they will be good for each other…..but she is not the style icon that everyone was wishing for. People already has an article comparing Kate and Meghan and their “track” style. This will continue until George becomes a teen then the focus will move to him and away from Kate and Meghan.

  40. Girl_ninja says:

Just like Kate she likes what she likes. I prefer the outfit that the blonde lady with them is wearing. That’s my style.

  41. Incognita says:

I love how Harry is gazing at Meghan in the second row of photos, on the far right. Talk about a smoking hot gaze! Sexy!

  42. 2cents says:

Thinking the jacket was a last minute add on do to weather? It looks like she has a matching pullover on (same as Harry’s) on underneath.
The heels make nooooo sense though.

  43. LoveBug says:

    @ Kitten

Many thanks for the tip, I’ll check out the oils you’ve mentioned.
I have a combination skin too and I now know that the rose hip oil by KOSMEA
works really well for my face and neck. It’s light and absorbs very nicely, I need a little bit only.
After I apply it to my face, I run the rest through my hair (only ends).
Jojoba oil is great for me to remove eye make up.
I love coconut oil for once a week hair mask treatment, I apply it all over my dry hair & scalp, wrap a cling wrap over it and a clean, dry towel.
After 2 hours of watching a movie I wash my hair, it gets amazingly shiny and very healthy.
This is great for dry and colder climates.

  44. PrincessK says:

DM Alert! On the radio today, quite unprecedented IMO there were repeated adverts from the Daily Mail…..” The Rise and Rise of Meghan Markle, ….how she overcame Racism, a Divorce, a Feuding Family to become a Princess….the Untold Story…Never Seen Before Pictures….don’t miss it the Special Souvenir Supplement in your Daily Mail on Saturday!”…….

What on earth is this again? Surely not more from Morton or could it be that greedy Priddy woman dug out yet another photo album? Poor Meghan! I suppose with six weeks to go everybody is cashing in for the big bucks.

    • Lady D says:

Yes, I think someone sold her out again. I feel for her, nothing worse than the betrayal of those you trust most.

  45. MRsBump says:

Guys, im all for her following protocols, but she’s a princess to be with the budget to buy burberry coats, surely she shouldnt be looking like the regular office worker.
I feel like the collective love for MM is clouding the judgement of the normally astute celebitches 😉
She’s wearing a too large coat, some jeans and heels, this isnt “modern and streamlined”, it’s a “running errands at the mall” outfit!
I’d take Kate’s weird button fetish over that drab outfit anyday.

    • Polly says:

I agree MrsBump, MM has been dressing like a conservative office worker and I’m bored with the ever present black pants. She doesn’t look bad, I just don’t get all the gushing about her ’style’ – I guess the appeal is that it’s relatable, but it’s so drab. Her clothes were better pre-engagement. I guess she’s playing it safe for now, hopefully access to a clothing allowance, a better stylist and a tailor will improve her overall look.

    • magnoliarose says:

I think it is playing this well from a PR standpoint. I haven’t fallen in love with an entire outfit, but if she stepped out looking like a fashion plate then the knives would be out, and she would be called an attention seeker or whatever the loons concoct in their minds.

    • Tata Mata says:

      Thank you!

I thought that her outfit lacked some style or some acknowledgement of the importance of the invictus games. Basically she is wearing black and heels and an oversize coat like people running errands. Surely some sporty-ish audience clothes would be nice? How about a sporty no-black jumper? How about colourful golf player clothes? Sporty and somewhat elegant.
And stiletto heels on gras? Come on, that is neither appropriate nor practical. Harry doesn’t wear his shiny custom-made black leather shoes to such events either.
To me it seems that Markle tries to copy the seemingly relaxed style of the British upper class country people.

Michelle Obama once had a wonderful style for some sports event. She wore heels, yes, but that was indoors. Those wide straight stylish Marlene trousers highlighted “sporty”. And the white-yellow colours just made it fun.
The lady next to her looks not so good cause that belt and those heels are simply ridiculously barbie-ish.

  46. Jane says:

I love her unpretentious choices. I personally dislike patterns, buttons, zippers, any flashy and trendy clothing.
Basically loud clothes and skin tight clothing too.
I’m into classics, like pencil skirts in black, navy, grey, white and khaki colours, beautiful tailored pants, coats, silk blouses, good quality cotton white shirts, well fitting jeans, cashmere sweaters and scarfs.
I wear really good quality shoes and boots.
I always go quality over quantity.
I will save for really lovely classic item instead of buying 3 cheaply made trendy stuff.
I think Meghan needs to work with a tailor, because pants are often dragging on the ground and her hair needs more appropriate styling.
That “portobello” hat was really bad and high heels don’t belong to sporting events.
She could do nice ponytails, half up and half down styles, French twist and some up dos.

    • MRsBump says:

I love the classics too. But this isnt classic, timeless style befitting someone playing with a budget most of us can only dream of.
The clothes just seem to lack flair and imagination.
I think people like her because her style is approachable which is fine, but the rapturous comments are a tad delusional 🙂

      • Jane says:

        @ MRSBUMP

Please kindly stop denigrating people who have a different opinion than yours when it comes to MM clothing choices.
Why should be our comments called delusional?
I like what she wears for the most part and you don’t.
We are all entitled to our opinions without labels like delusional.
I do not love or hate MM, because I leave such strong emotions for people I actually know.
I’m not worshipping her or going after her.
I would work with a good tailor, if I would be her and make sure that the clothes fit me much better, especially pants.
I would also cut my hair about 4 inches, so it would a bit more tidy, but still long enough for different hairstyles.
More appropriate hairstyles for events and shoes would be a great improvement.
In regards to budget, we have no idea how that works or how much it is. I’ve read someplace that she is paying for her outfits until she gets married.
I don’t know, if this is true or not, but I’m a 29 year old successful engineer with a very good income, plus very nice savings left from my modelling days.
So, I can certainly afford designer pieces more often than I’m willing to pay for it, but I always look at the tailoring and the fabric not “labels”.

      • Rayan says:

ah, your comment wins, Jane! I’ve noticed in this comment section, there’s usually only one line of thought. Meghan really isn’t buying super expensive pieces! Quality designer clothes – mid to high end, are worth investing in and are par for the course for many of us.

      • magnoliarose says:

Yes to Jane and Rayan. I don’t see you two around much; I like your comments in this thread.
I do like MM, but like Jane, I save strong feelings for people in my personal life.
I cut her slack because she is learning a different style of dressing that is very different from what an actress would wear and in front of the public with intense scrutiny. A lot of people mention CBK as a style icon, but she wasn’t always and learned from working at Calvin Klein. Diana’s first clothes were atrocious.
I don’t get hung up on labels or price as much as quality and design, but that goes with my career, so I have an edge she doesn’t.
I don’t understand the tailoring problem, and I think she needs a new stylist. She should pluck a British one from the fashion world.

    • Erinn says:

But it is somewhat delusional in some of the posts. You’re saying you love her looks because you love well fitting pants and coats and classic pencil skirts and so on. These aren’t things Meghan wears though! Her coats are too big. Her pants are too long 9 times out of 10.

I think a lot of the praise she gets is just a push against Kate. It’s a case of she’s not Kate being more important than whether or not she’s stylish. She’s getting praised for looks others would be picked at more often. I don’t read other sites like this so I don’t see all kinds of rampant racism like a lot of people probably find in comment sections. So maybe some of the ott praise on here is to counteract the awful carp people have said elsewhere. And that’s fine.

But its kind of silly sometimes when an outfit is praised for being so great but there’s multiple issues with fit. I found dressing in the colors of Ireland for an Ireland visit WAS fussy and pretentious. All of the pieces were fine but its not like her style is super easy and breezy. She puts thought into her outfit that normal people don’t necessarily do. Her hair in a ponytail would he more easy going but she probably had to fuss with it a lot before leaving then fussed with it in the wind all day.

Meghan seems like a cool girl. I just don’t think that a lot of the praise is necessarily genuinely earned/warranted. Not every outfit needs to be amazing and adored. But I think there’s some strange need from a lot of people to love everything she does and wears because there are people out there who hate everything she does and wears.

And her style is never drastically ‘off’ but its mind blowing that other people with her shape and half her budget can dress in clothes that fit properly. Just because something is trendy doesn’t mean it is poor quality. Just because something is good quality doesn’t mean it isn’t hideous. Just because something is flattering and classic looking on one person doesn’t mean its going to have the same effect on someone else.

And my god for all the “put down the eyeliner” comments Kate and Pippa get Meghan is almost as bad as an offender with it. Its not as harsh because her skin tone is deeper but its not good either. Its an aging look and VERY few people can pull it off. It takes away from any ‘classic’ look she does and dates it to the kid 2000s

  47. Jane says:

    @ Erin

Yes, I do love well tailored clothing and that is why I said in my comments that she should work with a good tailor so her clothes have a better fit, especially the pants.
I see that you have conveniently missed those points, I guess it suits the “delusional” narrative better.
I’m also not the only one mentioning on this thread that she could benefit from a skilled tailor.
I can’t say that I like every outfit I’ve seen her wear, but most of it looks good to me (that brown poopy hat was bad and I very much did not like her pricey engagement dress and not because of the price)
I think with small alterations, more appropriate shoe choices for certain events and better hairstyles for windy outdoorsy occasions her overall look would improve nicely.
I also appreciate that her clothes are not over the top expensive, because I think it’s possible for ordinary people to relate better to her and maybe her charitable causes at some point.
The heels didn’t work at all in this situation, but it’s hardly offensive or anyway hurtful.
Unlike Kate’s often inappropriate skirt length sometimes nearly flashing people her private parts and harmless, although a bit annoying and immature hair twirling.
To me Kate’s clothing choices are sometimes immature and matronly at the same time, I don’t know how that’s possible.
Sorry, but I genuinely dislike her “wedges”.
I’m not a fun of the black eyeliner look, even on myself with my rich dark colouring (skin and hair) and I was very, very light handed the both times I’ve tried it at home for fun.
I don’t think it looks terrible on MM.
She would look better without it, but it’s hardly the end of the world.
I also have emerald green eyes not dark brown, so there is that.

    • magnoliarose says:

This is how I see it too. I genuinely like her style potential, and I simply don’t like Kate’s style at all and have been consistent about it way before MM was even a thought.
But my feelings about one has nothing to do with other. Unlike some who aggressively bring up comparisons all the time and take people’s comments way too personally. (Not you Erinn) Any positives about MM are constantly attacked and questioned as if no one is allowed to like her really.
I don’t see delusion because I have seen real fan delusion and it is nothing like this. I have also seen her bigger supporters criticize her clothing here and there. I know who they are because I post on CB royal threads regularly. I think it is unfair and by some hypocritical to question opinions just because they don’t align with someone else’s.
Kate has been around a lot longer and spends an enormous amount of money each year, and the result is underwhelming after all these years. Separate issue. Separate woman. I don’t compare them but form my opinions on the individual.

I can’t speak for others. Meggles explained the MM hate vs. people who like her and are maybe fans. It was on a previous thread.

I don’t want any member of the RF to be a style icon or a fashion plate.
I have actors and models for that.
They should be dressed in well made, good quality, classy clothes that are modest and don’t flash the public, without the outrageous price tags while promoting worthwhile and important causes.

  49. Jane says:

Of course she has to put more thought into her outfits than someone like me who although has to be appropriate for my office job doesn’t get photographed from every possible angle and my outfit dissected with harsh and often racist rhetoric all over the place.
I wouldn’t want be her for all of the money in the world.

  50. BKittyB says:

Her hair does not have to be “straight” and “soft” for it to look good. Her hair in its natural state is just gorgeous. She can wear it any way she wants. Straight hair is not better or more becoming than her own natural hair. That being said, I see nothing wrong with her outfit aside from maybe the shoes.

  51. Taxi says:

It occurs to me that maybe her coats are loosely fitted because it’s so cold in Toronto, where she may have bought some of them, that she’d be wearing them over more layers or bulkier clothing than she needs now.

    • Peg says:

Most of the clothes Meghan wears, she wore in Canada, if she ran out and bought a new wardrobe, the cries about the taxpayers’ money, would be endless.

      • PrincessK says:

Exactly…she is damned if she does and damned if she doesn’t.

      • ASHBY says:

@ PEG : I completely agree, she doesn’t need a new wardrobe and if she would get one, some would rip her into shreds. I like her clothes, I would just hire a skilled tailor to hem the pants. They are often too long and it looks untidy. I would also never wear the mushroom hat.

    • ASHBY says:

      @ TAXI

Exactly right, Toronto can be very cold some days in the winter. Layers are a a good idea.
And for layers room is needed in a winter coat. I don’t see anything wrong with her coats being a bit big on her. It’s not offensive, she is not flashing anybody. On the other hand her pants need some hemming. A better choice of footwear in this case would have been more appropriate.
Her hair is flying all over her face on DM, a ponytail would helped a bit.

  52. BAILIE says:

I think she looks great, the only things I would change is the pants length.
She is often dragging her pants on the ground.
Hemming them a bit would go a long way
    to appear more polished.
She has a beautiful face and great skin, no need to hide it behind hair flying all over her face in the wind.
A ponytail would have looked great at this event and many others.
Even in a ponytail her hair would be blowing around, but not as bad.
There is no such thing as 100 % control of anything.
The shoes are not suitable to this event.
    It looks a bit silly.
She didn’t participate in the actual event, she was observing and probably learning about the event, so there was no need for full on athletic gear, but maybe just a casual pair of black boots without the high heel would have worked better.
