Thandie Newton is getting equal pay for Westworld too, won’t accept less ‘f-k that’

Last week we heard that Evan Rachel Wood had achieved pay equity for her work on Westworld, starting in season three and due to an initiative by HBO to provide equal pay for women on longer running series. Wood seemed genuinely touched and taken aback, saying that when she was married to fellow actor Jamie Bell he always made more money than her, even when she worked more. She seemed resigned to that, although she said that she was always fighting for equal pay and had turned down projects that were underpaid. Thandie Newton, who is slaying it as Maeve on Westworld, told Vanity Fair that she too achieved equal pay for Westworld and that she is not longer accepting less than her male counterparts on any projects.

Thandie Newton… told Vanity Fair at the New York premiere of Season 2 that she, too, has been in talks to reach an agreement for Season 3 in which she’s paid the same as her male on-screen counterparts.

“They’re all happening right now, and yeah, we’re all equal across the board,” Newton said of the ongoing contract negotiations. “It’s really exciting. It’s unprecedented. It’s—goodness; it shatters so much calcified pain, resentment, frustration. It just shatters it.”

Newton is so enlivened by HBO’s commitment to pay equality, in fact, that she vowed Thursday evening to turn down projects that offer her anything less in the future—meaning that any filmmakers and producers hoping to pay the Maeves of the world less than the Bernards need not apply.

“I wouldn’t do anything if it didn’t. Definitely not,” she said. “Fuck that. It literally sets a precedent, and [HBO is] leading the way, which is amazing.”

Vanity fair goes on to recap that The Wrap revealed that Anthony Hopkins and Ed Harris got more than Wood in the first two seasons, which makes some sense because they’re more established, however Wood and arguably Newton’s characters get just as much screen time if not more. Both Jeffrey Wright (Bernard) and the Westworld creators, Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, have spoken out in support of equal pay for actresses.

Honestly I went to bed early last night and didn’t watch the first episode of the new season of Westworld yet! I’m so glad it’s on HBO and not Netflix or I would be home bingeing it all week. You guys can talk about it in the comments if you want, just please label spoilers first. Westworld is so rich that any plot details won’t ruin it for me. This is also why I’m not going to do recaps for this show, it’s too complicated and I can’t remember everything!

Here’s Thandie at the Westworld premiere at the Tribeca film festival looking amazing in a crimson Schiaparelli suit. Evan Rachel Wood is in Mugler and this jacket is cool but I wish she wouldn’t have chosen such clunky shoes.

Look at Jeffrey Wright in an ill-fitting purple henley and jeans. He could have tried a little harder.

I’m also including some pics in the gallery of Thandie in athleisure. She rocks every look.

I’m glad this is FINALLY happening. Hopefully, more and more companies will get on board due to public pressure. Never forget, women buy sh!t too!!

Also, Jeffery Wright needs a bra. Teehee.

I love Westworld but I’m going to wait until the whole season is available so I can binge it. I might have to peace out of these comments early!

I binged season 1 and would love to do the same with 2, but I know I’ll cave and start watching. Plus I don’t want to be spoiled!

Love her. She’s so amazing on this show!

I love this series and both female leads especially Maeve. I had forgotten a lot of what happened last season until it came back to me last night. What a great show

I rewatched last season again this weekend to prepare for last night.

And I’m even more confused now. We got no explanation of where Other Hemsworth has been.

    Is this now?

Thandie IS Westworld. She kills every scene. And I need her and Hector to have a scene sex together when they aren’t covered in blood, being shot at by soldiers breaking down the door, or literally on fire.

    • Patty says:

Right! For me Maeve is Westworld. My favorite character hands down. And I love her and Hector together. Thandie and Rodrigo are smouldering.

      • Lightpurple says:

Smoldering together even when they aren’t literally on fire like the sex in the burning tent scene last season. I do like that Maeve was actually showing genuine affection for Hector in last night’s episode. She has her priorities and while Hector isn’t the top of the list, he’s definitely on the list.

She’s fantastic on the show, and knows her worth – good! I hope she’s successful in other projects too, and it takes guts to put it out there publicly that she will turn down work that doesn’t pay her equally. Kudos to HBO for doing the right thing, and women like Thandie for insisting on it.

She and Evan both look amazing there.

    Finally.
It’s embarrassing that its taken this long. Hopefully Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, and the other traditional networks soon follow.
