Blake Lively wore a giant Versace gown at the Met Gala: love it or hate it?

Costume Institute Gala in NYC

I kind of enjoy the fact that Blake Lively always wants to wear the biggest gown to the Met Gala. I mean, part of it is thirst, but then again – the Met Gala rewards the thirst. It’s the one place where you should go bigger and crazier. But… while Blake’s Versace look was big and notable, was it also sort of… boring? I’ve been struggling to really understand how she interpreted the theme. I’m sure this is probably based on some Medieval or Renaissance art work, but does it mean anything if people don’t get that? At what point is this just an overdone ballgown with a headpiece?

Met Gala 2018 NY

Speaking of not really getting it, I love Doutzen Kroes, but I don’t love her in this Sies Marjan look.

Cardi B went for something more obvious in this Moschino. I love her.

  1. Lee says:

I find Blake’s dress too heavy, looks like the dress was wearing her and not otherwise.
Doutzen is beautiful but that dress doesn nothing for her.

    • FLORC says:

I thought Doutzen was Stacey Keebler.
She’s pretty, but her styling isn’t striking. Its basic. And the dress looks not only cheap, but something VS Beachwear lines.

      • AnotherDirtyMartini says:

@florc – yes, beachwear! Exactly my thought.

Love Blake’s dress & headpiece but not loving the makeup much.

        Cardi B’s headpiece is great.

    • JustBitchy says:

Going for some sort of Virgin Mary from a triptych. (Blake)

      • Lee says:

Most likely! Is it only me or she’s been looking extra smug as of late?

      • Esmom says:

Lee, I don’t know about as of late but in these photos the smugness is off the charts.

      • minx says:

Can’t stand her, she has nothing to be smug about. Owes her looks to plastic surgery. Has no talent. Her husband seems like he would be a chore.

      • Spicecake38 says:

Statue of Liberty is all I can see

      • Tiffany :) says:

She’s been doing a smile kind of thing where she purses her lips together (photo #2). I don’t think it photographs well, it kind of reads as smug. Her face looks much better when she smiles with her teeth.

    • Becks says:

I think this is my problem with many of Blake’s looks. The dresses wear her, not the other way around. I actually think the dress is stunning, but I think someone like Giselle (*runs and hides*) probably would have worn it better.

      • Miles says:

I have never ever seen Gisele even attempt to wear a dress like this. Maybe she has and I just don’t remember but to me she always goes for the sleek look and even she doesn’t pull it off all the time. Case in point her look from last night so no I don’t see Gisele wearing the hell out of this dress.

      • ChillyWilly says:

Yep. The gown and headpiece are amazing, just not on her boring ass. She doesn’t have the swagger to pull it off.

    • C says:

I know nothing about fashion. I didn’t like the dresses at all.

    • Tessa says:

Love the dress and the diadem. Her-not so much. She’s very Meh

    • Cookiejar says:

      Reminds me of cardinal’s robes.

I’ve seen medieval ones full of gold.

      • India Rose says:

The embroidery is AMAZING. I’d love to wear something like this for one night, for maybe about an hour since it looks heavy, get a single portrait taken to remember the moment, then change back into boxers & a t-shirt and never wear anything like it again. The end.

  2. SKF says:

Doeten’s dress and hair are sad and limp.

I think Blake and Cardi B look amazing!! I also loved Stella’s Moschino dress and loooooong golden locks… Incredible! (Stella – VS model and Kirsten’s gf)

    • Kitten says:

Doutzen…sigh. She is one of the most beautiful women in the world (IMO) but this dress is such a disappointment. Cardi looks awesome and Blake looks good too.

      • MagicalDay says:

I don’t think Doutzen was on theme?

      • Eden75 says:

I suppose it would be on theme if you look at it in terms of the Virgin Mary, the manger years. More peasant, less holy like.

  3. Miles says:

Regardless of how I feel about Blake personally it would be foolish of me to say that she wasn’t one of the best dressed and wasn’t on theme. She was one of the few who was both. Along with Cardi B, Rihanna, Lily Allen and Prikanyka imo

    • Jegede says:

I would also add Taylor Hill & Kate Bosworth.

    • FLORC says:

I like it too. And so many others.
You don’t go soft and pretty for the Met gala. There’s a theme and you go full speed. Creative. Flamboyant. Avant garde.

Cardi is so animated. Love her

    • JustBitchy says:

      Agreed

    • Josephine says:

Totally agree. A bunch of boring and cheap looking dresses, and Blake’s was neither of those.

  4. Slowsnow says:

Well Blake is clearly the Madonna, the Virgin Mary, the way she was depicted in medieval and Renaissance painting.
I say it’s fitting: a dress that denoted wealth and a crown that signified divinity. And a miraculous body. Isn’t this what celebrities are trying to sell us?!

    • littlemissnaughty says:

Yeah, it’s actually pretty on the nose. All that is missing is a baby Jesus doll. But it’s spectacular and she looks stunning.

    • Ellaus says:

+1 I just thought the same when I saw ver, she looks like a medieval Virgin, halo included. And she has the attitude and the glow.

    • frantastic says:

She looks AMAZING. Love everything about the look!

    • lightpurple says:

Exactly. And I think she pulled it off. The work on that dress is beautiful.

      • Ankhel says:

She does look great. It’s a show stopper of a dress, and a lovely “halo”.

    • lannisterforever says:

It’s on-theme and stunning. She looks like a medieval and golden Lannister Queen and that’s the highest compliment I can think of.

  5. Katie says:

I’m voting love on Blake’s outfit. The colours and her headdress looks straight out of a Renaissance painting of the Madonna. And it works for the occasion. I’d love to see it up close as I bet the detail is amazing.

    • The Hench says:

Yep, I’m voting love on Blake’s dress too. I thought it worked stunningly on the steps, as it was no doubt designed to do. Quite how the hell she managed with it inside or to go to the loo is not for us mere mortals to concern ourselves with…

  6. C. Remm says:

Hmmm, Doutzen Kroes reminded me on Mary Magdalene.

  7. harlequin says:

Blake Lively — best dressed for me. She looked beyond stunning, I’m head over heels in love with her gown and headpiece!

  8. Digital Unicorn says:

Am not normally a fan of Blake’s red carpet style but the top half works and the colours suits her – the train was overkill and ruined the rest of the look.

  9. Jussie says:

I think I would have really loved Blake’s if it had just had the massive full skirt all the way around instead of the fitted skirt.

Still, it was a great dramatic look on a night when surprisingly few people went for the dramatic.

  10. Adrien says:

    Love it.

  11. midigo says:

well, I think Blake really nailed the theme. The inspiraton comes from the ancient “dressed statues” representing Holy Mary or saints that you can find in Southern Italy churches. They all have that heavy and rich fabric beaded and embroidered with gold or silver thread. Plus, she is gorgeous and the color compliments her.

  12. Elizabeth says:

I love Blake and Cardi’s dresses. If you go to the Met Gala you MUST wear something big and crazy. I’m sure they were both really uncomfortable all night but it’s for fashion 🙂

  13. JoyBells says:

It’s a tie between Blake and Priyanka for the best look of the evening for me.

  14. SmalltownGirl says:

Loved Blake’s look, gorgeous and on theme.

  15. Lucy2 says:

I love Blake’s, and that headpiece is perfection.

  16. Christina S. says:

Fashion is definitely subjective just like so many other things. I found Blake’s dress stunning, like something a princess or queen would wear 100 years ago or so. I agree the dress wore her, but I feel the gala is to wear art and I feel she succeeded with what she had on. I love the dress and IMO she had the most beautiful dress at the gala this year.

  17. Aang says:

She looks stunning and on theme. My favorite.

  18. Betsy says:

    Blake’s dress is really pretty.
Doeutzen looks like she’s referencing the stained glass in a Mies van dear Rohe church.
Cardi looks great. I love the headpiece.

  19. Maria F. says:

I liked Blake’s dress, but the sheer parts along her legs. I do not think it needed them.

I am not a fan of her headpiece, maybe it is too much with the dress, but something screams OTT for me. I would have preferred something simpler, or maybe a ornate braid or something.

  20. Marlene says:

My first thought was that Rihanna did it better – when she wore that gigantic yellow Chinese dress a few years ago. I’m a bit indifferent to Blake’s dress.

    • Carmen says:

I thought that gigantic yellow Chinese dress looked like a gigantic plate of scrambled eggs.

  21. Lizzie says:

for some reason blake lively bugs but i must admit she is freaking gorgeous and her body is just incredible. she looks so wonderful after having two babies back to back. she looks both soft and strong. having been in italy recently looking at about 10,000 renaissance paintings and the opulence of the vatican, i’d say she nailed the theme.

  22. Alyce says:

She was 100% on theme without going into costume territory.

I think she looked stunning. Probably my best dressed and I liked several of the looks. The theme went over much better than I had anticipated!

  23. tracking says:

My favorite look of the night. Spectacular dress, a work of art in its own right, and lovely styling.

  24. Jayna says:

Blake looked amazing. She was one of my favorites of the night.

  25. Old Wine Box says:

The best look of the night! Blake looks amazing!

  26. Nicole says:

Blake looks great but I agree with some people saying her dress wears her. But that gown is gorgeous and well done.

  27. Tig says:

It was a stunning look-and on theme, which was pretty rare last night. Everything worked , great tailoring.

  28. tomatoejane says:

Blake is massively on theme. Agree with the Virgin Mary reference mentioned above and will add a spot on nod to the power of the Borgia popes and Vatican opulence. Well played by Blake.

  29. Jess says:

I don’t know why, but I’m biased against Blake Lively. Her biggest “accomplishment” is her marriage, she’s not particularly talented. Her face was completely crafter by plastic surgeons (she had at least 2 nose jobs, boob job, eye lift, veneers, etc). At least she’s harmless I guess. Meh

    • Lee says:

Can’t say you’re wrong on this. Marrying Reynolds was her best career move.

    • minx says:

Same. She’s so average in every way.

    • Ada says:

I mean she was still gorgeous in the before picture. And I’m not sure which is the biggest achievement, to be born beautiful or to pay for beauty?

    • elle says:

She looked great before – very surfer girl/natural beauty. Now her nose is too small for her face.

    • artistsnow says:

She lost me completely when she changed her nose after the Traveling Pants movie. That showed her shallowness. Blake was really gorgeous. Now she is just plain old barbie pretty.

Why do so many women ruin their unique looks?

      • Jesss says:

@artistsnow, @elle, what unique look? the previous pic I sent was her already mid transition. here’s how she looked in high school
        http://www.wepick.com.br/cms/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/blake-lively-2002_mini.jpg
she had super crowded teeth, bad bite, heavy eyelids and flat chest. She made the right choice to fix it all. she had at least 2 separate nose jobs, maybe even 3

      • Miles says:

@Jesss you’re posting pictures of someone in high school and judging how they look. And then people wonder why young girls are insecure with how they look and want to change things about themselves. So she got work done? Why does that bother you so much? As if everyone in Hollywood hasn’t had work done. But you showed your sexist self when you said Blake owes her career to her husband when she was on a hit TV show, in movies and was already gracing red carpets long before she met him.

      • Jesss says:

@Miles, exactly. A tv show that perpetuates that you get a pass for being a brat only if you are pretty and wealthy. And red carpets? wow, yes, that is an accomplishment. I’m sorry my cruel and judgmental self made Blake go through all of those surgeries. Sadly you missed my point.

  30. MellyMel says:

Blake and Cardi were def two of the best dressed…easily top 5!

  31. Case says:

Blake Lively won the night for me. Stunning dress.

  32. Lala says:

I thought that Kate look on point theme wise…and she DID remind me of so many glorious religious paintings I’ve seen…Her and Cardi BOTH look PERFECT!

  33. Diana says:

    Love Cardi B so much!!!!!!

  34. Veronica S. says:

The sheer panels ruin Blake’s dress for me, which is a shame because it’s otherwise on point. Very reminiscent of those ornate robes that priests wear in Catholic churches.

I like Doutzen’s dress but not for this venue.

    Cardi B is a gift.

  35. ValiantlyVarnished says:

Blake had one of my favorite dresses of the night and she was on point with the theme. The dress is directly inspired by Catholic Renaissance paintings of the Virgin Mary.

  36. Spring says:

Blake and her dress are right on-theme, and she can really carry a big, striking dress. Her dress reminds me of some of those worn by Queens of San Antonio’s annual Fiesta celebrations. No shade — some of those those creations and their embellishments are beyond belief, and I don’t know how women manage to walk gracefully in them. Practice, I guess, but I think I’d be an accident waiting to happen in a dress like that combined with high heels. Steps, stairs and even a little bit of alcohol would be a guaranteed disaster LOL

  37. LB says:

You can find Blake’s outfit on any South Asian bride. I was cracking up on everyone talking about the design being so intricate when I see a dozen of those (with a smaller train admittedly) at every relative’s wedding. But it’s nothing new to see people dramatize what other cultures are doing once Americans appropriate it.

    • Ankhel says:

Westerners in many centuries past wore sumptuous red silk gowns with gold embroidery and long trains. It was a favourite design with the aristocracy, and signalled desire, power and riches.

    • Veronica S. says:

The clothing worn by nobility and high priests in Western society were commonly embroidered and made of rich and sensuous fabrics. Just pull up Renaissance paintings of European kings and queens for reference. In the Middle Ages, red, purple, and blue were considered specifically colors of the royal classes. I can see where this particularly dress is reminiscent of South Asian bridal gowns because of the gold beading and embroidery, but given a more modest cut and drape, it wouldn’t entirely be out of place in a French or English court.

I’m not trying to dismiss the fact that Westerners do appropriate and exploit other cultures for capitalist venture, but this is one of the cases I’m not sure the intent of the design can be so easily isolated since there is precedent in the historical background of both Eastern and Western society.

      • LB says:

Thank you and the poster above for the information. I did not mean to imply she was off theme. My point is more that everyone is wetting themselves over something that is common to South Asian culture daily right now because an American celebrity is wearing it. There’s nothing amazing or unusual about this dress to warrant the intense adulation I have been seeing on SM.

      • Veronica S. says:

Oh no, that I agree with. I think it’s definitely not something you see too often over here, but it’s also not particularly original in comparison to other cultures.

Also, the idea that you should ever lose your mind over Blake Lively’s fashion sense is pretty out there, lol. (The sheer panels whhhhhy)

      • LB says:

She’s definitely impeccable and has classy taste but it’s not particularly revolutionary. For lack of a better word, it’s basic. For amazing fashion choices, I look at Zendaya and her stylist who are just constantly killing it.

  38. hezzer19 says:

How on earth did Blake fit that dress into a car?

Actually that goes for a lot of the dresses from last night.

    • SmalltownGirl says:

There are pictures of her leaving her apartment in a robe, so she dressed somewhere nearby and then made her Red carpet debut. However, it’s not any bigger than some wedding gowns and bride manage just fine.

    • Lyla says:

Most of them ride in party buses, not regular cars.

    • Carmen says:

Katy Perry had to ride to the Met standing up in a truck.

  39. mellie says:

Love Blake’s dress, I imagine that up close that dress is breathtaking. Cardi B was pretty awesome too, but she needs to get those boobs under control, the “spillage” took away from the rest of the look.

  40. HeyThere! says:

Cardi and Blake looks amazing! Love all the drama. Blake is one of my favorite looks so far. Cara was another fav with the confessional look and head piece.

  41. Dee says:

Blake’s entire look is AMAZING. She’s nailing it and I’m sooo here for this.

  42. Carmen says:

Cardi B was way over the top but in a good way. She looked fabulous.

  43. Amelie says:

Blake’s dress was entirely on theme. Not only is she going for the Madonna with a halo look that many other women went for, but the dress is very reminiscent of papal/priestly robes from back in the day. I’ve been to a lot of cathedrals since my parents dragged me all over France as a kid and I lived in Spain for two years. I visited a lot of cathedral treasuries and they often have these rich, ornate robes on display.

Not entirely sure about Cardi’s look though it reminds me of saint depictions on frescoes and stained glass windows. I’m surprised nobody went the creepy skeleton route, we Catholics have a morbid fascination with adorning skeletons of saints with jewels and putting them on display in churches (not as common in the US as I’m sure people would say it was too scary for children plus we don’t have a whole of saints I’m aware of).

  44. Pandy says:

Blake’s face is looking pinched lately. Not sure she’s going to age well.

  45. Helen Smith says:

I loved Lily Collins’ goth look.

Elon Musk’s date tried a goth look as well and looked like a mess.

  46. what's inside says:

I thought the whole Met thing a total egostical snorefest.

  47. A says:

You’re right about Blake being boring. The look is very basic and boring for the theme. She literally just took the most obvious elements (the red, the embroidery, the opulence, the halo head piece etc) and put it all together and created a very very predictable look as a whole. Not into it at all. Try better blake.

Cardi B won the night for me. The fact that she’s pregnant worked so WELL I’m still in awe about it. <3 It doesn't get more Marian than that!

  48. Jenny says:

I like Blake’s outfit. The whole theme this year is so ridiculous but I think she somehow made it work.

  49. aerohead21 says:

I felt like she did well at balancing glamour with the theme. The fit is beautiful, the crown is pretty and definitely remenant of the Catholic Mother Mary depictions. The colors are rich, the fabric is elegant and fits with the textiles of the church. At the same time, she kept it minimal enough to not come out like Sarah Jessica Parker, who clearly loves to take it way over the top.

  50. No Doubtful says:

I love Blake’s dress! She looks like a queen from the 18th century!

Cardi looks alright considering it’s her first one. At least she stayed on theme.

  51. nikki says:

I looooove the theme and the dresses. Such inspired period throwbacks. Very fairy tale!

  52. jferber says:

Hated Blake’s dress. So look-at-me when others are so much better dressed (and more talented).

  53. Yup says:

I thought this dress was beautiful.

  54. jferber says:

Pandy, I agree Blake’s face looks different. She reminded me of Kyra Sedgwick, a beautiful actress and wife of Kevin Bacon.

  55. BooBooLaRue says:

Love love love the gown that Blake has on however, she doesn’t have the gravitas to pull the look off. Better on someone such as Cate Blanchett or even better, Angela Bassett.

  56. Rori says:

I’m not even a huge fan of Blake but I thought the detail on her gown with the slits and the lace leggings underneath was gorgeous. I’d like to see more people pull that off. Instead of just exposing leg it would be cool if there was detailing underneath the slit.

  57. sza says:

Cardi B…yassss! Give it your all! Perferct and on theme yet stiil Cardi. Amen. Blake’s gown is stunning-I get Medici vibes esp. from the fabric.

  58. Boopy says:

You can really see the bias in the article because Blake looks amazing. And Cardi looks bad

  59. Punkypuss says:

I think she is going for one of the stained glass saint looks maybe? That’s what the head dress reminds me of from catholic school

  60. CamoTime says:

Blake wore that dress like she was a boss. Looked fantastic and on point.

  61. Anare says:

The gown is beautiful but I don’t understand why she is a thing. She is just the hanger for this gown.

  62. AuroraBorealis says:

Blake Lively looked amazing! That woman knows how to wear the heck out of a dress, I loved it! Not a huge fan of Zendaya but she looked stunning! I love Doutzen but her dress was underwhelming and does nothing for her. I like Cardi’s gown but she looks a little, I dont know, smooshed? I know she’s preganant but the dress is puckering in places and seems to be too tight.

  63. Suki says:

Blake looks GORGEOUS and I love the colours on Doutzen. Can’t believe people are preferring Cardi’s look to Blake’s – Cardi looks awful! Her dress looks like it’s attacking her.
