Serena Williams admits she ‘got hot’ when Alexis Ohanian talked about tech stuff

I see you, Serena Williams. And I like what you’re doing! Serena arranged to do certain magazine cover profiles while she was regrouping and training for the French Open and Wimbledon. She had one magazine cover story drop while she was playing in Paris, and now here’s Serena on the cover of InStyle, just days before the start of Wimbledon. I can’t say I blame her – women’s tennis is awesome and dramatic these days, but Serena has been sorely missed, and she brings people to women’s tennis. Anyway, InStyle made her the cover girl for their Badass Women issue, and you can read the full cover profile here. If you watched HBO’s Being Serena, you know most of this already, but it’s a completely enjoyable and fun read. Some highlights:

Winning the Australian Open while pregnant was the most badass thing she’d ever done: “Oh, absolutely! I was two months pregnant. I was literally nine weeks by the end of the tournament. I was almost done with my first trimester. Every day that passed I thought, “This is a dream.” It was like an animated Disney movie. And by the time the quarterfinals came, I was like, “I know I can beat this girl,” and at the semifinals I thought, “I know I can win this match.” I didn’t think I would win the final, so when I won, it was like, “OK, this is crazy.”

She wants more babies: “We’ve got to have more. If I weren’t working, I’d already be pregnant. I hear everyone’s different, but I had a really easy pregnancy until the birth. Not even birth—after.”

Whether she knew Alexis Ohanian was “the one”: “I had this sense, like, “I’m going to marry this guy, but I’m not ready yet, but I know I’m going to marry this guy.” I didn’t know his world at all, but I’ve always been tech-savvy. I had a few investments before I met him, and I wanted to know more. So we started talking, just as friends. Just casually chatting. I was getting hot when he was talking about it all. So after that we just continued talking, and then, I don’t know—I love his world.

Whether she’ll retire any time soon: “Roger [Federer]’s still playing. If he’s doing it—he’s older than me.”

How Roger Federer recently described her as the real GOAT: “It’s incredibly flattering—he’s inarguably one of the greatest of all time. It’s really cool to get that encouragement from your peers, especially someone like him. I just feel like he gets it.”

On attending the Royal Wedding: “Yeah, it was super fun. You know, I’ve known Meghan [Markle] for years, so it was good to see my friend happy.

The second most badass thing she’s ever done: “ I think going back to Indian Wells. For me, that was really badass. I was so nervous. I remember before I went back, I was thinking, “I don’t know what I’m doing. I don’t want to get booed again.” To walk out on that court again was really badass, to just face up to it. I was literally afraid. I was a teenager [when it happened]. It really affected me, and I didn’t realize how much until I had to go back.

In case you’re wondering, Serena was being a little bit shady about her AO opponents – she doesn’t mention anyone but Venus, but she talked about how her opponents in the first few rounds were really good (Belinda Bencic, Lucie Safarova) and then she talked about how she knew she “could beat” her QF opponent, who was Johanna Konta. I remember that match too – Konta didn’t play badly, but Serena just bulldozed her, and that’s always fun to watch.

I absolutely love this too: “Roger’s still playing. If he’s doing it—he’s older than me.” First of all, Roger is six weeks older than her. Second of all, I find it ridiculously charming that Serena and Roger have that kind of competition with each other, that neither one of them wants to retire before the other. They’ll both still be winning sh-t into their 40s and giving interviews about “well, if Roger isn’t going to retire, than neither am I” and “well Serena is still doing it so I’m going to hang around.” What if they end up retiring around the same time? I’ll be shook.

For @SerenaWilliams dominance comes naturally, but she’s no stranger to obstacles, especially on the court. “I’m an incredible mental player, but I’m also a physical player. You can’t play a sport without being physically ready. It’s difficult to come back as a professional athlete who was once ‘Serena.’ There are records out there that I want, and I’ll get there, but in due time,” she tells @LauraBrown99 in our August issue. “I’m always in the fast lane. I’m always extra. I have to be willing to do the work, and I have been. Because, to be honest, I feel pressure to be Serena. But these days I keep telling myself I don’t have to be anything. This is for me.” #BadassWomenIssue #InStyleBadassWomen I Photographed by @RobbieFimmano

I have never been a fan of her style, but when I saw these photos my jaw dropped. It’s not like I’ve never seen her look stunning before, but damn! She is an absolute goddess! Her interview quotes are everything. She is so outrageously talented. I cannot wait until they have more, beautiful super babies! Oh, and my partner is in tech, so I know 100% what she is talking about when she says she got hot. We are on the cusp of this huge transition with tech. It is really exciting!

  5. Anniefannie says:

I love, love, love Serena and have always been in her court for 15 years but please Serena don’t talk about yourself in 3rd person, it always sounds waaaay egocentric….

I watched her HBo specials and fell in love with her, I don’t have children and I couldn’t believe everything she went through to get back in shape to go back to work, while still trying to be a Mom.

  12. Snowflake says:

Her husband always looks so in love when I look at pictures of them. It’s so sweet!

  13. broodytrudy says:

I love Serena but i think a chunk of this comeback tour is being used as a distraction from her husband’s website, reddit, being investigated by the FBI in connection to the russian probe. Additionally, they continue to allow hate speech and awful posts on specific subreddits involving calls for hanging Obama, slaughtering muslims amd liberals, and oyher absolute horrendous things.

None of this is on Serena. I’m sure she’s aware if the issue but i can’t help but feeling a bit weird that none of it is being talked about.

Eta: we don’t need to threadjack here, but I’d like to see cb cover it.

  14. Mo' Comments Mo' Problems says:

Alexis definitely got his non-existent street cred boosted in all different arenas outside of tech after getting together with Serena. 😆

  15. TheOriginalMia says:

She looks great. The interview was funny and insightful. I love the respect and affection the top men have for Serena. She’s a GOAT and they know it. Alexis is a lucky man.

  16. Jess says:

Gosh, I just adore her! I saw her doc on HBO and Alexis is so head-over-heels in love with her, it’s very heart-warming! Also, her baby Olympia is seriously one of the most beautiful babies I’ve ever seen. I hope she keeps playing for years to come, she’s always wonderful to watch, no matter the outcome! I particularly loved watching her play Naomi Osaka at the Miami Open. Even though she wasn’t in top form (just had a baby, hello!) she played so hard against a girl sixteen years her junior who was raised idolizing her. Must be such a surreal experience to be challenged by a whole new generation that entered the sport specifically because of you! GOAT.

  17. Avery says:

I just really hope Serena, Alex, Meghan and Harry go out to dinner and attend matches. I really need that right now.

  18. Sandy says:

    Gorgeous

  19. gbbarb says:

In an interview with InStyle, she revealed her list of “badass” females: Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Kate Middleton.

    • Levin says:

Lol yes, that wasn’t mentioned in this write-up, was it? Well, she’s met those people and they are her picks.
