Cheryl Cole & Liam Payne split after about two random years together

The Brit Awards 2018

They said it wouldn’t last… and it didn’t last. Cheryl Cole and Liam Payne are no more. I was interested in the couple at first, but they were so weird about their relationship, I ended up not caring. They weren’t really May-December – Liam is 24, and Cheryl is just 35. But they met for the first time when he was just 14, when he was a contestant on X Factor UK. This was very much a relationship where a guy got to date the adult woman he had a crush on when he was just a teenager. The problem was that sh-t got real in a hurry when Cheryl got pregnant in 2016, soon after they got together. They welcomed son Bear Grey Payne in March 2017. So… they made it longer than I was expecting, honestly, but we all knew it couldn’t last.

The now ex-couple released coordinated statements on social media at exactly 5:45 pm on Sunday:

I mean… I don’t wish either of them ill. It feels like Cheryl’s “picker” is just off – she consistently falls for the worst or weirdest or most random guys, and then ends up marrying them or having their baby. As for Liam… well, he’s 24 years old with a solo career, post-One Direction. I’m sure he’ll be okay.

    Anyone surprised? lol

  2. CidyKitty says:

They were just a super rando couple.

Well what a shock. A thirty-something woman and a twenty-something boy with the mental age of fifteen didn’t work out? Colour me stunned :O

  4. duchess of hazard says:

Announcing the new after those two barnstormer penalty games at the World Cup… SMH. They could have waited after July 15.

  5. Lainey says:

Always got the feeling she was with him just to have a baby. She’s been talking about it for the best part of a decade.

  6. Zapp Brannigan says:

Bear Grey Payne? Did nobody in their lives say that childs name out loud to them and ask them to think again.

I am shocked that this relationship did not work out, they had so much support too considering that Cheryl’s mum, brother and her brothers girlfriend all moved into Liam’s house with Cheryl. What could go wrong with that many in-laws around with a new baby and fledging relationship. Dark days for love.

    • Loopy says:

What is up with that? Her mother also lived with her and Ashley, she really needs to revisit such arrangements.

      • Zapp Brannigan says:

It is odd, I wonder if it is a combination of Cheryl not being able to cope alone and not knowing who to trust in showbiz. Whatever it is it’s harming her personal romantic life.

      • Digital Unicorn says:

^Zapp, that’s also why her stint on American Idol didn’t last long – she was away from her comfort zone and basically sat in her hotel room refusing to do promotional work hence why Simon had no choice but to sacked her. She later admitted that she found it difficult to do the US show without her friends and family around her. I used to work with someone who is freelance photographer and met her when she was married to Ashley Cole – she said Cheryl was a beautiful woman in person but deeply insecure about her ‘talent’ and career, plus she commented that she financially supports her whole family (they are all on her payroll) and is why they always end up living with her.

I’ve never been a fan of hers but wish her well with parenthood.

    • Digital Unicorn says:

Am sure that the support probably keyed a part in their issues, her first husband (the footballer) made comments when the split about her family being around all the time. I never thought it would last and that he was a rebound after the disaster of her 2nd marriage.

    • Ninks says:

I’m not sure it made much of a difference to Liam, because he doesn’t seem to have spent a whole lot of time there anyway. He’s been on a year long promotional tour of festivals trying to inject some interest into his rapidly declining career. I think he’s young and wanted to enjoy the party lifestyle, where she’s at the age where she wanted a baby. It was never going to work out, but the fault is with both of them.

    • Aurelia says:

At least she didn’t change her surname AGAIN.

  7. manta says:

Why does she still go by Cole? One other marriage and a baby daddy later, one would think she’d have ditched it. She was famous before Ashley Cole and isn’t exactly Tina Turner or Susan Sarandon, for whom name changes could have been difficult.

    • Noddles says:

I think she did try to didn’t she? I think I remember a while back that she just wanted to be called Cheryl after her second divorce but everyone still calls her Cheryl Cole. Better than Tweedy I guess.

    • Amelie says:

Is that why she all of a sudden became “Cheryl?” I dunno, once you start going by your first and last name I find it kind of pretentious to just become a one word name artist like Rihanna, Beyonce, Madonna, Adele or Shakira. Those names are all unique (well Adele is really not that unique IMO it’s a pretty common name in France but anyways) and easy to remember. Cheryl is a pretty regular name and just looks silly on its own. I actually thought got confused before I realized she had dropped her last name. I thought she was some new artist who closely resembled Cheryl Cole for awhile. I get not wanting to go by her ex’s last name but she could have just picked a new last name to go by professionally, lots of celebrities do it.

    • Pencilfloater says:

It’s because if you google “Cheryl Tweedy” the first thing that comes up is that she viciously beat up a black woman in a club in 2003. So her team never wanted her to go back to that name.

NB There is a sweet/ sad B-side from Lily Allen’s early days called “Cheryl Tweedy” which sort of sums up how it feels to be in your very early twenties.

  8. Nene says:

    This seemed inevitable

  9. Beth says:

Is there really a reason that they needed to “announce ” their breakup on Twitter? Ok, their relationship didn’t last, but I didn’t even know they were together until I saw this tweet here announcing their split. If people want their privacy, they need to stop putting everything on social media

    • Kate says:

Apparently, they are quite a big couple in the UK and there were a lot of speculation that they were on the brink of splitting up. Better to announce it now than when Liam is inevitably caught making out with some “Insta-model” lol

    • CK3 says:

The tabloids and their fans knew they were together. Had they not announced their split, they’d both have to endure a week or so of “Is Liam/Cheryl cheating on Cheryl/Liam w/ xyz” stories and the weak followup/skepticism that follows. 1D has a huge female fanbase. The last thing Liam wants to look like is a guy cheating while his gf is at home with their child. That’s not even taking into account the fresh hell that would rain down on Cheryl if she were photographed with another guy.

Heck, we’d be here arguing that they moved back the date of their break up to avoid a backlash over their cheating like folks did w/ Colin Firth and his wife’s separation/stalker issue.

  10. Kate says:

    What a surprising surprise!

  11. Barry Iris says:

    Not a surprise at all.

Cheryl was also married to another french guy while pregnant with a bear. (Sorry I had to)

What bad decision making on all their parts.

  12. P says:

At least she didnt get a new surname, lol

  13. Gutterflower says:

What is his career post 1D? I have heard songs by the kid with the hair, the scruffy one, and the blonde one who looks like he’s 12……how many members were in the band? I could google I guess, but that is a lot of effort for a Monday morning.

    • CK3 says:

He had a hit (Billboard Top 100 #10) w/ “Strip that Down”, which might be my favorite post 1D song from them. I’m actually surprised by how much I like a lot of the post 1D stuff. So much that I learned their names. They’ve got a great team getting some good material for 4 of them because typically only someone like Harry would get the good stuff, while Liam/Niall/Zayn would get the stuff relegated to J.C. Chasez (who was always better than Justin imo) or Michelle Williams. Louis seems to be the only one going the way of Joey Fatone in this break up.

    • Mo' Comments Mo' Problems says:

He also writes songs with that other 1D guy who had a baby for other artistes.
