Neve Campbell: Fame ‘hit so fast and so big that it was a little overwhelming’

'Skyscraper' Premiere in New York City

Back in the late 90s, you couldn’t miss Neve Campbell. She gained TV stardom on Party of Five and was in a ton of memorable movies, including Wild Things, Scream and one of my personal favorites, The Craft. (All hail Manon.) Save her recent recurring role on the fourth season of Netflix’s House of Cards, the 44-year-old actress has been absent from the screen and, thankfully, Stephen Colbert is on the case of her disappearance.

Neve is back in a big way, co-starring with The Rock (a/a/k/a Dwayne Johnson) in his latest action adventure flick, Skyscraper. She popped into The Late Show with Steven Colbert, telling Colbert she’s always wanted to do an action movie and offering some behind the scenes dish that The Rock is very curious about what everyone’s eating on set.

When asked why she took a break from the business, moving to London, she admitted, “I just needed a minute. It was a long minute. It was a good minute.” She went on to say:

”In my twenties, it all hit so fast and so big that it was a little overwhelming—wonderful, obviously, and I’m very grateful for it. But it got to a level also where the kinds of things that I was being offered were not the kinds of things I want to do. I was constantly being offered horror films, because I was known for horror films. Or bad romantic comedies. I just wasn’t interested in the scripts and I was feeling a bit unhappy with the things that were coming to me. And I was feeling a little bored with the whole thing. I thought, ‘I want a change.’ So, I moved to London.”

“I was completely anonymous there. It’s just very different there. I literally did not get bothered once! People would ask me what I did for a living. I’d say, ‘I act,’ and they’d say, ‘Oh, Okay.’ It was so lovely!”

In addition to Skyscraper, Neve is also in the upcoming film Hot Air with Steve Coogan. I’m glad she’s back and hope she gets an offer for a good horror movie soon, as I have no interest in seeing Skyscraper. Neve is also busy with mom duties as she and her boyfriend JJ Feild welcomed their second son, whom they recently adopted. Neve has another son, Caspian, who is six. She shares a pretty funny story about how he got his name (and her nine days in labor!) on Colbert. Neve announced the new arrival via Instagram a few weeks ago, noting that “It’s the most incredible thing we’ve experienced. We’re so grateful for this beautiful light coming into our lives and we think of and are grateful to his birth family every day for such an incredible gift.” Congrats, Neve and JJ (and Caspian too) .

    Underrated beauty

      You and me both, dude.
      You and me both.

    • Kitten says:

Love her! Party of Five was one of my favorite shows growing up. She was always so pretty and she looks incredible at 44. I’m so happy she’s back and getting work.

  2. Scal says:

I’m still jealous that she ended up with JJ Feild. Besides being good looking-his voice is so soothing. Lucky gal.

  3. SM says:

Wild things….I will always associate that movie with the beggining of my independance. I have a slightly older friend and she took me to see Wild Things, was the first film I felt like I saw without my parent’s consent, on my own. I loved her in HOC, she was great in it and while playing an ice princess to Claire Underwood’s ice queeen she managed to actually seem Claire wooden at times and hence overmaster Robin in the art of passive agressive character portray. Sorry she is not coming back for the new season as I have no interest in seeing Skyscraper too….

I never watched Party of Five but love the Scream movies. Neve was great in those films, a total badass. I might actually watch this latest one (when it comes to Netflix or one of the movie channels) just to see her. From Scream Queen to Action Hero. I love it.

9 Days in labor? NINE DAYS? :O What the hell? Please tell me that this was a typo. Omg.

  6. kate says:

She also played Matt Saracen’s mother in Friday Night Lights! She was magnificent.

    • Dinah says:

I remember Neve in one of Mad Men’s episode. Don’t really think she was absent from the screen, perhaps selective of roles. Seems like she has the perfect balance of everything.

      • perplexed says:

I don’t think she’s highly self-prmotional. She acts, but seems to fly under the radar like her partner in the Scream movie, Skeet Ulrich.

She’s aged really well. I think she’s prettier now than then.

      • launicaangelina says:

I remember her in Mad Men too and wondering if it would turn into a multi-episode arc. She’s so beautiful!

    • Claire says:

Love Neve and love FNL, but she was not Saracen’s mom. That was Kim Dickens, who is like 10 years older than Neve. They have a similar vibe, though.

      • Lucy2 says:

Thanks for the info, I didn’t think that was correct either but couldn’t remember who it was. They do kind of look alike a bit.

I do remember her in Mad Men, she was good. Glad she took the time off she wanted and is now back for the right reasons.

      • kate says:

Oh my God, I feel so stupid. Sorry, I was not trying to spread fake news, I really tought they were one person!
Edit: I really should have known that Kim Dickens and Neve Campbell were two different actresses, given that they were both in House of Cards. My bad ^^

  7. BooRadley says:

Have always, we’ll always love my little Canadian beauty, glad she’s back, glad to see her face again 🙂

  8. JustJen says:

She has really good bone structure. When she was younger it wasn’t that evident but now it’s hard to miss.

  9. Bridget says:

Um, she was NOT absent from the screen, a cursory IMDB search would tell you that she pops up in things occasionally. Don’t know why it’s being worded this way.

  10. adastraperaspera says:

Menopause hot flash? Um, nope, just Neve Campbell Herself popping up on Celebitchy. Dying over here!!

  11. Little Red says:

She hooked up with JJ Field!?!?! Majorly jealous here. I love his Henry Tilney.

  12. KiddV says:

The last thing I saw her in was Three to Tango with Matthew Perry. I always thought it was odd that she was everywhere then suddenly nowhere.

    • susiecue says:

Haha I remember that movie. I used to love it, don’t think it would hold up too well now

  13. Other Renee says:

She is really beautiful. Nice to see her back in the spotlight.

  14. Bella Bella says:

She was in that fabulous movie where she played a ballet dancer and did all the dancing herself!! Way before Natalie Portman! She was an amazing dancer, and she didn’t get any recognition for all the work she did. I never thought that was fair.

    • Dizzy says:

You are thinking of the Robert Altman film, The Company. The dance was beautifully shot and Neve did a fantastic job in it. I remember thinking about her often when there was all the hoopla surrounding Natalie Portman in Black Swan.

  15. meg says:

the bad guy in the first scream, Billy-well now he’s known as jughead’s dad. he was my first big crush-well after Johnathan taylor Thomas and before leo DiCaprio. is it weird that I hated him more the in craft than in scream? he was a jerk in the craft but in scream he was a murderer-strange but true. the way he looked at Sydney, the hair in his eyes-major crush

  16. Lesley says:

    She is STUNNING.

  17. K says:

Meh…I have no reason to actively dislike her, but she never made a strong impression on me. The adoption post is sweet though and she looks happy. I think JJ is the more talented actor, but cursed to resemble Tom Hiddleston and Jude Law (gangly-hot, British accent, does a good scowl) too much to distinguish himself.

  18. raincoaster says:

She made a terrific little film in 2007 called I Really Hate My Job, about being a waitress in a tiny, stuffy restaurant with a VERY unstuffy group of coworkers. If you have ever worked in a restaurant you should definitely watch it. It’s all centered around her character, who is an incompetent and strung out waitress in the middle of an early mid-life crisis. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0831299/

  19. Holly hobby says:

Loved her since Party of 5! She’s aging naturally too!
