Brooklyn Nine-Nine could tackle #MeToo thanks to Terry Crews (mild spoilers)

Wednesday marked the first table read for season six of Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Right before the read, there was a panel discussion about the new season. Among the things we learned was that B99 wants to develop a storyline dedicated to #MeToo. As we know, Terry Crews, Sgt. Terry Jeffords on the show, has been at the forefront of the movement. The show wants to support him and all the victims but their main goal is to get it right for victims’ sake.

“I like to call it the Summer of Freedom,” Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Terry Crews said during the NBC show’s panel at TCA, when asked about having come forward with his own report of having been sexually harassed in Hollywood.

“This is all about freedom and being able to tell your story,” Crews said at TCA today “Feeling safe and having friends and family on [Brooklyn Nine-Nine] I felt secure enough I could tell my truth and still go to work. It made a difference.”

“Each and every person…gave me the strength, along with all of the women who came forward in the #MeToo movement, that’s where I got a ton of my strength from,” he said, noting he had been talking to the cast about his experience the day before he decided to go public with his tweets.

“This is just the beginning and this is going to be a new day,” he predicted optimistically. “From now on the town will be safer for my wife, my son and my daughter.”

Series EP Dan Goor said they were interested in doing a #MeToo episode, continuing the show’s trend of doing more issue-oriented episodes. “They are really hard to do, but we’re happy with the way they turn out.”

“The challenge is to stay true to the show and feel funny, but give a weight to the issue and explore it in a fair way. I can’t promise, but we’re really interested in trying to do a #MeToo story,” he elaborated, saying they are in active talks about it in the writers room.

Added Samberg: “We are not going to do unless we have the right take that does it justice.”

Spoilers for past episodes of Brooklyn Nine-Nine
One of the things B99 does masterfully is to give a difficult subject the weight and attention it deserves without the whole episode being a complete tonal shift. It’s very much like M*A*S*H in that way. Issues they’ve covered in the past include police racial profiling, coming out to biased parents and dealing with their fellow officers in a crisis situation. And they don’t resolve complex issues in 30 minutes. In the profiling episode, which was inspired by an incident that happened to Terry on a plane while he was still playing football, the resolution was Capt. Holt supporting Jeffords. But the larger story, Jeffords’ case against the other officer, is ongoing. Diaz and her mom are still not speaking as her mom comes to terms with her feelings about Diaz’s bisexuality. Having just read (and possibly grabbed my Doug Judy doll to have good cry over) that the entire show supported Terry, we know this issue is important to all of them. If and when this episode airs, I have no doubt they will do the subject justice.

Other stuff to come from the panel (spoilers)

A little love flowing back and forth between Andre Braugher and Sterling Brown:

Multiple assurances that the show will remain the same and NBC will not butcher the hell out of it to tow a corporate line.

There will be a Halloween Heist episode.

Gina Rodriguez is in talks to make another guest appearance. Adrian Pimento (Jason Mantzoukas) will likely be back. Marc Evan Jackson’s Kevin will definitely be back, which seemed obvious to me because I see him as a permanent member of the cast (he’s not. He bounces between B99 and The Good Place and is marvelous on both).

But, of course, the most important thing we learned yesterday is – the return of Doug Judy! And if I know Dan Goor like I think I do (not at all, actually) he will talk Craig Robinson’s current costar, Adam Scott, into coming with him.

B99 should be coming our way mid 2019. It’s too far away for my taste but just knowing it’s out there lets me sleep at night.

I love him and I hope he stays strong and fights the horrible deprived Hollywood.

  2. Lucy2 says:

I can’t wait for the show to come back, I’m so relieved it was saved. Terry is the best, and I’m so glad he’s feeling positive about where he is right now.

  3. Stumpycorgi says:

I don’t watch the show, but I love Terry! What a brave, loving man! 💕 Artist, athlete, loving husband and father, feminist, and so much more. Keep up the good fight, Terry! We support you!

  4. Mara says:

How often are both a show and the people behind it this good? Not enough. I love B99.

    • Anners says:

that’s how I feel about it, too – good people, good writers, terrific show! (please please please let me never hear anything horrible about any of them – it would break my heart to cancel B99)

  5. Lozface says:

I absolutely love this show and watch it over and over again on Netflix. It’s my pick me up after a crappy day!

The racial profiling episode was phenomenal. One of the best comedy episodes of any show ever.

They will certainly do #metoo justice and I can’t wait for them to be back! Nine nine!!!!!

  6. Mel says:

If you haven’t watched it yet, you should check out their comic con panel. The audience was extremely smart and insightful in their questions and the cast was taken aback (in a very good way) because everybody acknowledges what this (seemingly) goofy little show does in terms of representation. A few tears were shed as well…
    I love this show.
I’m so happy about Doug Judy!!!
I also watched the Good Place panel. The moderator was Marc Evan Jackson but for me he’s Kevin for ever! Even on TGP, I call him Kevin!!!
I can’t wait to see how they tackle the #MeToo issue. The racial profiling episode had me in tears, same with Rosa coming out. Nine Nine!!!

    • Lozface says:

I agree completely! I cried in both episodes and even felt compelled to rate them both 10/10 on IMDB.

Such moving episodes wrapped up with lots of laughs!!! Jake and Amy dealing with Cagney & Lacey is a great little side story that always cracks me up!! ‘What’s an orgasm?’

  7. fv says:

The bisexual episode made me tear up, especially the end. I will say the Halloween episodes are entirely too predictable. So glad to see this show going strong.

  8. Cee says:

I didn’t read much of this article because I just started watching this show on Netflix and I don’t want to be spoiled. I love this show so much! And Terry is so AMAZING in it.
Hopefully season 6 will make it to Netflix in less than 2 years *cries*

  9. Morrissey says:

In love with Brooklyn Nine Nine. I’ve got so many people watching it, including my 70something surrogate mother. We also use it as a balm after watching The Handmaid’s Tale episodes.

  10. Tallia says:

This is cast is such a collection of talent it is unreal. The comedic timing is genius, they are able to emote…love this show.

  11. Fluffy Princess says:

Yay! I love the 99! It is one of my all-time favorite shows and I watch it all the time on Hulu. Fluffy Loves Terry! But really, I love the whole cast–everyone is great, and quirky, but still fun. The episode with Sterling K. Brown was so good!

And Doug Judy is back! “Rosa, Rosa, Rooooossssssaaaa!” He’s the best, I wish he had more than one or two episodes a season.

    Yay again!!

  12. Desdemina says:

I’m not gonna lie – I had to google “doug judy doll” to see if there really was such a thing. Get on it, Etsy!
