Johnny Depp denies abusing Amber Heard: ‘It couldn’t even sound like me’

I feel a personal affront to how magazines are doing their business these days. Either their celebrity profiles are so boring and short to not even be worth the time, or they’re full-on novels which take half a day to plow through. Here’s the kicker: Johnny Depp really isn’t that f–king interesting. We don’t need a 10-page celebrity interview where he’s given free reign to chat about Pirates of the Caribbean for like ten paragraphs. That’s what British GQ did for Depp: they gave him a lengthy profile where he just sat in one place and played the victim for days, it feels like. This is not the same thing as his recent Rolling Stone profile, which took pains to present Depp as he is: an incoherent mess who thinks he’s brilliant. This British GQ piece is like “oooh, he’s very arty, isn’t he??” You can read the full piece here, and here are just some of the highlights, including Depp’s denial that he ever abused Amber Heard:

On his Rolling Stone profile: It was“a sham… I was shafted. The guy [journalist Stephen Rodrick] walked in with absolutely one intention. And I could see it and I thought maybe I could help him understand, you know? I trusted Jann Wenner…I trusted what the magazine stood for, or what it used to stand for. I wanted Jann to see if he could write, to see if a piece could be written… to put things in perspective. That’s all, just to put things in perspective.”

Everything is a conspiracy to bring him down: “But did it stop all the power mongers in Hollywood who were interested in shutting me up? Big money was being thrown about. People suing me at every opportunity. I mean, it’s all so obvious. Listen, I know I was never going to be Cinderella – I know this and accept it. But it felt like within a very, very short period of time that suddenly this version – for lack of a better word – of Cinderella had been immediately turned into the beast. He’s Quasimodo. I could feel people look at me differently, because of the accusations towards you. And then people start putting things in magazines: ‘He’s insane. He needs to take a sanity test…’ You know, ludicrous stuff.”

Whether he abused Amber: “To harm someone you love? As a kind of bully? No, it didn’t, it couldn’t even sound like me. So, initially, I just kept my mouth shut, you know? I knew it was going to stick on me and it would get weirder. Keep going, you know? Go nuts. I ain’t going to get into a pissing contest with someone about it. Spit out what you need to spit out and, you know, my attorneys will take care of the rest. I never went out and spoke about the sh-t.”

But he does care: “But of course I care what my family and my kids think. I mean, you realise right away, essentially, that what is being done is the commencement of what they hope is to be your funeral… And worse than that, to take away future earnings that are for my kids, you know? I do this s–t for my kids, man. How could someone, anyone, come out with something like that against someone, when there’s no truth to it whatsoever? I’m sure it wasn’t easy for my 14-year-old boy to go to school, you know what I mean? With people going, ‘Hey, look at this magazine, man. What, your dad beats up chicks or something?’ Why did he have to go through that? Why did my daughter have to go through that?”

He wonders why Amber didn’t report: “Why didn’t that person speak to the police? I mean, they spoke to the police, but the police saw nothing and they offered her an emergency medical technician. She said no. Police see nothing on her. Police see nothing broken in the place, no marks, and then they offer her an EMT to have a look at her and she says no and I don’t know if it was the next day or a couple of days later, but then there was a bruise. There was a red mark and then there was a brown bruise…. She was at a party the next day. Her eye wasn’t closed. She had her hair over her eye, but you could see the eye wasn’t shut. Twenty-five feet away from her, how the f–k am I going to hit her? Which, by the way, is the last thing I would’ve done. I might look stupid, but I ain’t f–king stupid.”

[From British GQ]

No. Just no. The abuser doesn’t get to question why his victim “didn’t report.” He doesn’t get question why she did report and then the cops did nothing. He doesn’t get to question the fact that she hoped to avoid turning her life upside down by accusing her super-famous husband of abuse. Remember how Amber initially wanted a simple, quiet divorce settlement? But then Depp began attacking her in the press and sending TMZ out to destroy her. She was not only an abused woman escaping her abuser, he was still trying to throw his weight around and destroy her life and reputation after she left him. He’s so full of sh-t. Why do magazines even bother speaking to him at this point?

Kevin Spacey assaulted young men and was totally removed by the industry, Johnny Deep is a wife beater, she even posted a video of him being a raging drunk mess, but still get jobs and plays the victim in interviews…
    Seriously this is awful.

  2. Tracey Ulman Show says:

Apart from Depps many obvious issues I differ in my opinion about Heard. She did report, she got the TRO, she leaked the video. She was full steam ahead, but I stopped believing that she was being abused when she refused the deposition and didn’t show up for the permanent restraining order. I believed it when it was reported that she was blackmailing for a quick settlement. That was Laura Wassers position. I believed Wasser. I think it’s possible for both sides to be ass hats and in this case I believe they are both trash.

    • Alisha says:

I think they are both toxic people who were in a very unhealthy relationship, but it is not hard for me to believe that he would be abusive. In any case the man is clearly unwell and I wish people would stop giving him a platform.

    • Not really says:

She did her deposition yes, her witness did their depositions too, she didn’t ask for another restrain order because the made a deal.
You can read the paperwork via internet but don’t accuse amber heard about not doing her deposition, Johnny Depp on other hand didn’t do his deposition also the bodyguards that were talking about his character and how he was innocent wasn’t on his list of witness but his list were full of people that weren’t present during the fights.

    • Really says:

      She did her deposition

      • Tracey Ulman Show says:

After canceling once and not showing up once and then creating a firestorm in Wassers office throughout the thing. No one behaves that way who is innocent

      • Tiffany :) says:

Tracey, that’s not what you wrote. You wrote:

        “she refused the deposition”

It is totally sketchy to question someone’s motives and then give misleading statements about the sequence of events.

    • Lady D says:

“That was Laura Wasser’s position.” Did the lawyer actually lay all that out for public consumption?

    • detritus says:

I hope if you are ever assaulted there’s no one ignorant of abuse who decided they are an expert and criticizes how you behaved after a trauma, looking for reasons to doubt you.

      Those people are the worst

    • Tracey Ulman Show says:

Sorry. Let me make it more clear. The entire time she was there for the deposition, from 11:50 am (arriving 1 1/2 hours late and having a tantrum about parking) until 9 pm she refused to go into the conference room where the videographer and court reporter were. Instead she refused to go in staying in an adjacent office. It’s not a depo if it’s not on the court record via certified shorthand court reporter

      • PamelaJudy says:

        How do you know?

      • Shockadelica says:

That story was before she actually took it. She was waiting while the lawyers negotiated. Btw that info came from TMZ and her lawyers denied that. But…SHE TOOK THE DEPOSITION PERIOD! who cares what happened before that? She sat for 7 hours and what did Scarf-Douche do? Nothing. He still chose to settle after that because they didn’t catch her in lies like they wanted to. And you can’t tell victims how to act.

  3. Chaine says:

He sounds like Trump talking. Go away, we aren’t interested in you or your movies any more.

  4. Lucy says:

I remember when I used to think he was the coolest, realest guy ever. Sadly, it was not that long ago. And of course his kids did not (and do not) deserve to go through the scrutiny, but that was all on him. Kill your idols.

  5. Heather says:

“I trusted what the magazine stood for” – translation “I thought they were gunna make me look good.”

    • Dr Mrs The Monarch says:

Exactly. Anyone with brains in the entertainment industry previews articles before they are printed and maintains the right to say what can be published and what cannot. What JD revealed is that his publicist was too lazy to proofread and review the Rolling Stone article before it was published. Now he is crying “poor me” after he behaved like a wreck in front of a journalist who didn’t cover for him or make excuses for his behavior.

  6. Disgusting says:

He is a mess and is still playing victim, it is a shame that his supporters are so abusive and toxic like him ( just read what his fans write on blogs and how they attack everyone) .

  7. Marty says:

Right. I’m sure she just got those bruises by “walking into a door” and being “clumsy”. He still takes no responsibility for his negative behavior and it’s gross as hell.

  8. Who ARE These People? says:

Shame on GQ for running this.

  9. lucy2 says:

Does he not realize we have eyes? That we’ve seen the drunken video? That we can see what he looks like right now, and how he’s behaving? He’s a mess who needs help, and he’s a mess who needs to leave his ex-wife alone.

  10. BrutalEthyl says:

He didn’t even deny the abuse claims here. All he did was give a bunch of excuses. “It couldn’t even look like me.” What kind of shit is that?

If somebody asked me if I did something I didn’t do, I’d be all “Hell NO I didn’t do that.” He danced all around saying no but never quite said it. He’s a LIAR.

  11. Rebecca says:

Who are these powermongers in Hollywood working to shut him up? Does he mean the people in his head? He says he’s sure it wasn’t easy for his son and then blames that on Amber. He can’t even fathom that it might be his own fault and that he has drinking, drug and anger (abuse) problems. This is why people don’t feel sorry for him. He is full of excuses and everything is everyone else’s fault. He does nothing to try and change his behavior. Every interview he does makes it worse and he can’t see that because he is so full of himself.

    • lucy2 says:

He’s still (inexplicably) getting hired and paid quite a bit, despite being a mess, having lawsuits regarding on set behavior, and accusations of abuse. Plus he’s destroyed both his talent and his looks through substance abuse. Why on earth is anyone still hiring him? And how can he possibly claim Hollywood is trying to shut him up?

  12. Nikki says:

I think it’s so pathetic he says that his future income is being taken away from his KIDS. This from the guy who has blown through millions. Evidently he wasn’t thinking too much about their inheritance all those years of spending. I also don’t think he was thinking of his kids’ feelings at school when he dumped their mom for a young starlet. His self pity speaks volumes.

  13. Meganbot2000 says:

He’s literally done dozens of interviews over the decade where he’s admitted to being violent and an alcoholic/junkie, including saying several times that he sometimes gets “hillbilly rages” where he’s uncontrollably violent and bites and eye-gouges people. Way back in the 90s he went to prison for assault then told a magazine “going to jail was worth it to see the look of fear in the little maggot’s eyes.”

Now he’s claiming to be some kind of little cupcake who abhors violence?

  14. Shockadelica says:

Idiot! Does he not know how bruises work? And what about the other pictures of bruises? And her eye wasn’t shut because it wasn’t swollen shut, just bruised. And she didn’t accuse him of hitting her from “Twenty-five” feet away. She said he threw a phone at her face. The police saw nothing because their was no bruises then. And she didn’t let them examine her or go inside.

  15. Babs says:

I will never forget the finger incident. He is a violent and unhinged mess and I don’t care how much of a shady golddigger Amber heard is, he assaulted her and terrified her on the regular. F him.

  16. Shockadelica says:

He’s basically calling her a liar two years after he released a joint statement saying she wasn’t lying😆😆😂

  17. skipper says:

I think he was wasted out of his mind during this interview.

    • Kym says:

      I think that’s a fair assumption.
I don’t think it has ever occurred to him to just be grateful things turned out so peachy for him and move on with any little shred of decency that he can muster. The fact that he can’t seem to speaks volumes and I hate that I’ve supported so many of his movies…well past the point where I felt he was phoning it in.

  18. Jennifer says:

I’m not sure where my original comment went, so here’s a recap :

He talked in circles and still could not say “I never abused Amber in any way” despite the word salad meant to sound like a denial. That tells me what the real truth is. And if he was so concerned with the kids inheritance then why is he spending money on things like flying bottles of wine halfway across the world, or firing his friends ashes out of a canon costing millions of dollars? This interview is BS. And so, so typical of an entitled abuser. It infuriates me that there are people out there that buy what he and his ilk are selling when they rant and rave about how unfair it is for them to be exposed for their abuse.

    • Shockadelica says:

Right! He never denied it two years ago in interviews or through his lawyers. That joint statement was his ONLY legal statement on the case. And it said she didn’t lie.

  19. em says:

When I lived in London in 80’s and 90’s I had a friend who was a makeup artist for Kate Moss and she said when she was dating Johnny, Kate would always arrive covered in bruises on a reglar basis, which had to be hidden with heavy makeup , the problem stopped when Kate stopped seeing Depp, so yes he seems the violent drugged out type.

  20. Kimsan says:

I’m confused, how is it that Johnny can speak directly about the case but Amber has to be vague. I thought that they signed a NDA
