Gwyneth Paltrow recommends 3-week juice diet, but charges for it

Gwyneth Paltrow
After actually giving some semi-useful information about environmentalism last week, Gwyneth Paltrow is back to being her snotty, elitist self. This week’s GOOP newsletter is a “Do”. What are we supposed to “do”, oh all-knowing Gwyneth? We’re supposed to do this three-week-long juice detox diet that she recommends. It comes via a “detoxification specialist” named Dr. Alejandro Junger:

As I write this, I am finishing the amazing three-week-long “Clean” detox program detailed belo w. Designed by New York cardiologist and detoxification specialist Dr. Alejandro Junger, this program allowed me to work and exercise regularly, something I cannot do if I am on a liquid-only detox.

I followed it to the letter and I can report that it worked wonders. I feel pure and happy and much lighter (I dropped the extra pounds that I had gained during a majorly fun and delicious “relax and enjoy life phase” about a month ago).

I also really enjoyed learning about the incredible health benefits of resting your digestive system, etc. This thing is amazing. And don’t forget to ask your doctor if a cleanse is right for you. Love, Gwyneth

[From Goop Newsletter]

Gwyneth doesn’t love us. She’s just saying that. Anyway, the rest of the newsletter is devoted to “GOOP” asking questions of Dr. Junger, all about this detox program he’s named “Clean”. Because I guess “Give you the runs and make you feeble” was already taken. Even though I had to read the whole frigging newsletter, Goopy and Dr. Goopy don’t really give explicit instructions on the diet, you actually have to pay for the official “Clean” detox program. But I’ve culled through the info, and I think the basic gist of the “Clean” detox diet is this: eat a lot fruit, drink a lot of juice, only buy organic, get some sun when possible, meditate, get massages, enjoy a sauna, have lots of cold and hot baths, and most importantly, “remove… dairy, bread, pasta, sugar, white rice and red meat.”

I don’t really have anything against a detox program in general – although I think three weeks is a bit excessive. It’s good for your body to change things up a bit, to eat lots of fruits and vegetables, to do all of the recommended stuff. But here’s the thing that Gwyneth never gets: the rest of us peasants don’t have her time, money, or narcissism. We have stuff we need to do, and our lives are pretty busy. When Goop is recommending lots of massages and time in the sauna, I just roll my eyes. She destroys an average message about how we could be eating better and improving our bodies with the dual message of “you can’t afford to live like this anyway”.

    She’s an ass!!!!

  2. HEB says:

Eff that, I’m having a beautiful turkey sandwich for lunch.

  3. lb says:

She and Chris Martin are the most anemic ‘power’ couple happening. It’s a wonder they have children, their sex drive must be shriveled up from fasting, exercising and fomenting their power status. I have not seen such delusional OCD since Demi Moore exercised for hours of the day during her pregnancies. Hopefully there are no pictures of Paltrow and Martin together in the raw, I am sure they look like a couple 11 year old girls.

  4. Victoria says:

Oh this bitch needs to get over herself already! How many lbs did she drop? Two! And from where?

  5. Oenix says:

It is just a suggestion. Plain and simple: if you like it, give it a try; if you don’t like it, ignore it. It’s not like Mrs Paltrow puts a gun on anyone’s head DEMANDING they obey her orders. People, just chill!

  6. Mollybloom says:

I just read a lengthy article in Newsweek (I think) about how unhealthy, ineffective and unnecessary these fad “detox” diets are. They are nothing more than starvation and pseudoscience. Your liver and digestive system do a more than adequate detox for you everyday. Eating a balanced diet of fiber, protein, carbs and yes, fat, is the only way to stay fit and healthy.

  7. TaylorB says:

    Somewhat off topic here…

Let me preface this by admitting I am no fashionista, but the stiff, poofy cap sleeves on that dress are just awful, it makes her look like she is constantly shrugging her shoulders. Cut the sleeves off and that dress wouldn’t be half bad.

  8. Ella says:

OMG!!! Her publicist weighed in! (“weighed” is probably the wrong word)

  9. Feebee says:

She had to go on a detox after a ‘relax and enjoy life’ phase. Like she can’t relax and enjoy life as her life. Says it all really.

  10. geronimo says:

Best advice I’ve ever seen about detox products from a respected nutritionist on a recent tv show:

    Pick it up from the shelf;
    Read and follow the instructions about cutting out booze and high-fat processed foods;
    Further read and follow the instructions about upping your intake of water and fresh fruit and veg;
Place the product back on the shelf.

The results are amazing. You look better, you feel better, you lose weight and it didn’t cost you a penny. Rocket science, not. 🙂

  11. n says:

Gywneth — do us all a favor: keep your ideas to yourself — you’re making everyone hate you.
Her mother, Blythe Danner, is a real actress with lots of talent — where oh where did she go so wrong with this one?

  12. Ashley says:

Cleanses or “detoxes” as they are commonly known can actually be very healthy for your body. As long as you aren’t fasting or following some strict juice only diet, a little cleansing using herbs that support your body while still eating “clean” food can be wonderful for you. I do a cleanse several times a year and never have problems with weight gain, problem skin, etc. And I used to always be stuck with the extra 20 pounds. I guess I’m just trying to say that done in the right way, a detox can be good for you.

  13. ! says:

I love how she’s all “consult your doctor” to absolve her of any responsibility. I almost guarantee that there isn’t a doctor out there (outside of Hollywood, anyway) who would say “Yeah go ahead, go on a liquid diet!”

  14. Raven says:

Drinking a lot of juice and putting your pancreas on “high” spewing out tons of insulin should not be considered cleansing by any knowledgeable person. There are known ways to detoxify the liver and kidneys but they are legitimate from the actual cases I’ve seen, not hype.

  15. sickofit says:

    this so screams EATING DISORDER.
    and please mister oenixpublicistofgwynethpaltrow:
TRY at least to conceal the fact that shes your boss by not calling her Mrs Paltrow on this blog. That is so flimsy it hurts.

  16. gg says:

Silly dress, silly lady, she looks about 60 in the second photo, and about as sexy as a stick of celery.

  17. the original kate says:

i see goopy’s cleanses have done nothing for her posture.

  18. fizXgirl314 says:

her skin doesn’t look all that great… too bad none of those detoxes have dislodged the stick up her butt… she looks as stiff as ever…

  19. Carolyn J. says:

She relaxes and enjoys life only in one-month phases? I got her beat!

  20. Lem says:

First don’t fast and B didn’t we have quotes less than a week agp about how she loves to eat and can’t diet.
Now admitting to at least 2 fast.

For cripes sake, cleanse fine. But some young girls are going to read this as goopy doesn’t eat fr 3 weeks. That’s just irresposible and will kill someone.

My biggest beef ever!!! Cutting calories under 1200 will not help anyone to lose any real fat weight *&^%$# (*&^ *&^%$ *&^% dammit *& *&^ *&^

  21. AC says:

Im not a huge fan of Gwen but I think she’s a great actress. I’m not sure why people HATE her for sharing her experience. Im sure she’s sympathetic to people who can’t afford to do these things. For people who can do it? Do it! for people who can’t – modify it if you want to do it for yourself but don’t HATE her for doing something and sharing her experience.

A lot of people have gym memberships – most gyms have saunas … and eating lots of fruits and veggies if you’re not eating anything else isn’t crazy expensive.

I’ve found cleanses very helpful. 3 weeks is longer than I have patience for. But when I have extra money sometimes I do the blue print cleanse which believei t or not I found out about through her. I don’t do extra massages, saunas, or colonics or anything… those are suggestions not manditory to the cleanse.

  22. sickofit says:

o yeah AC, Gwyneth Paltrow sure is a holy persona.

  23. casey.in.co says:

wait…a “relax and enjoy life phase…” does that sound wrong to anyone else but me? i thought you were always supposed to enjoy life…not just in phases. hmmm… am i doing it wrong? 😉

  24. sickofit says:

last one from me: unhealthy skin does not come from detoxing. Its the immune system that comes crashing from those o so healthy detox diets.

  25. Arvedia says:

“Detox” is based on the idea that what we consume regularly is somehow toxic or leaves waste inside the body. Medically speaking this is wide off the mark, however, so the whole concept doesn´t really make sense. People who eat well and takes care of themselves can just go on living happily.

  26. icky says:

what a tease! SHe knows the damn diet- yet she can’t divulge it’s secrets..no we have to buy the effing program – which I’m sure anyone with half a brain knows its a sham in a box… I guess to her it’s no big deal to spend a couple hundred to have diahrea (sp) for three weeks- but I just can’t part with that kind of cash just to be miserable and sick. How bout some REAL advice bi*ch, not your stupid little infomercials..ARRGGGHH I hate her!!!!!

  27. vale says:

Old school detox from Italian country women: eat fruit all day and an early dinner consisting of 1/3 cup of rice. Three days of it and it’s healthy and great for you. Sorry Gwynnie, I’m saving my money.

  28. lrm says:

or the classic mung bean kichari-mung beans, rice, ginger and tumeric,a little salt,a little ghee…voila!
eat it for 3 days, and only eat it…breakfast lunch and dinner.
not exciting, but extremely nourishing, detoxifying but not depleting. [yea, some ppl benefit from the juice thing-mainly people who eat alot of rich foods, spicy foods, drink,in combinatin on a regular basis. everyone else-esp the thin women always watching their weight-will get depleted from a juice fast, where the spleen is working overtime from all the sugar…]
kichari=the age old indian detox/recupreative ‘diet’. good if you’ve been sick, good if you’re toxic-lol-good for kids and the elderly…and pretty dang tasty, too.

  29. BlueSkies says:

AC, she’s been building her brand the last 9 months, not sharing just to share, genius. This letter exposed the hardsell. Don’t you see she’s getting a cut of this at $350 a pop? Have you seen the doctor of this fast? He looks like a junkie! Dark circles under his eyes. He looks so unhealthy and comes off as a Russian mobster. Check her link. He can’t even bother to put on a tie. He went to medical school in Uraguay, not here and I believe he isn’t board certified. I hope this isn’t another Tracy Anderson thing. He does have some good advice on the Q & A but ruins it with the video. Check out his testimonials. The worst wonk eye I’ve ever seen.

  30. Leila says:

I had to go on a liquid diet for one day only for medical reasons. It was the worst day of my life. I’ve never been so hungry and cranky. I can’t believe anyone would want to stay on something like that for 3 weeks. People who listen to this kind of advice and go on these diets just to lose weight are in danger of passing out with hypoglecemia. Plus, you’ll gain all the weight back after you resume normal feeding.

  31. TaylorB says:

“Goopy and Dr. Goopy don’t really give explicit instructions on the diet, you actually have to pay for the official “Clean” detox program”

Shouldn’t this be under her ‘buy’ section instead of her ‘do’ section? It might be apropos if she just set up one universal ‘Sanctimonious BS’ section, oh wait she already did it’s called GOOP.

  32. Nev says:

    Seriously can’t stand Paltrow.

  33. drm says:

Maybe if she stays on this detox diet she’ll start to shrivel, dry up and eventually she’ll blow away!!!!!

The words fatuous and vacuous come to mind when ever this woman opens her mouth…

  34. Ally says:

Besides the excess consumption of juice, more fruit & veg, less meat and processed food, and organic food are good rules to live by all the time.

She seems to be on a highly structured, holier than thou, binge and starve cycle here, which will start to take a toll on her body.

Moreover, like most medical people who comment on these detox diets, I have to say, exasperatedly, hello HUBRIS!

Depending on your belief system, millions of years of evolution or the holy creator have crafted a perfectly functioning detox machine called the human body — see: liver, kidneys, digestive tract, etc. To think you can do better with JUICE is stupid beyond belief.

Eat as healthy as you can, exercise, and don’t put your amazing creation of a body through crazy extremes. I know my diet never put me in the hospital, Gwyn.

  35. Ignatz says:

that dress makes her look hunchy.

  36. Abby says:

kaiser, i LOVE how much you hate gwyneth.

  37. AC says:

wow blueskies. i guess i don’t care enough to research this stuff.

I wasn’t really defending her i just don’t understand the HATE.

I really don’t care! I just thought I’d share my experience that a healthy juice cleanse for a couple days (with the correct juices and correct amounts) can be great.

  38. Nebraska says:

Gwynnie is too skinny and looks like she is trying to hold her diet diarrhea and pee at the same time. I’d rather know Beyonce’s eating habits so I can get some booty!

  39. Obvious says:

I really like Gwyneth, but I have to admit that she would me much sexier if she gained some weight.

Then again, she might not wear weight well — she might just look like a saggy, flabby skinny girl.

  40. Ned says:

That picture screams “I have an eating disorder”.

Despite the makeup, you can see her body is eating up the remaining tissue in her face.

She looks so anorexic, I am sorry, but someone should help her.

I don’t know if the obsession with being thin and all these extreme “diets” have caused that, but perhaps she should eat some meat and pasta.

  41. j. ferber says:

Is she wearing a Kaballah bracelet? Has Madonna turned her on to that fad? It seems Gwyneth lives on fads: fad diets, fad religions, fad fashion, etc.

  42. Because I Say So says:

Don’t you peons get it yet? She’s not marketing to unenlightened neanderthals. She’s marketing to those spiritually gifted, elitist (read: rich) people who are seeking a remedy from ennui. Those of us who hate her with such passion are missing the mark and are jealous of her. 😮

  43. Kelly says:

I’m gonna eat a big fat steak for dinner, smother it in A-1, eat all the buttery rolls I can shove down my gaping maw, and wash it all down with a pitcher of ice-cold milk. It’s all for you, Goopy, it’s all for you.

  44. Lilac says:

That is disgusting. I hope you’re not actually eating all that flesh and animal fluids.

  45. Vicky says:

Gee, I didn’t realize there were so many Gwyneth-haters out there. I have never followed her, nor am I aware of this Goopy thing… but I seriously don’t think a juice diet for 3 weeks is very good for any one’s health. I’m an Atkins Diet supporter (I know… please don’t hate me!), but it sure has taught me that sugars in excess are BAD, BAD, BAD. And guess what? Fruit IS sugar!

I’ve lost 30 lbs in 5 months on Atkins and I feel absolutely wunnnnnderful at the age of 50. Sugar in any form is very bad for a body in excess, not to mention WILL cause excess body fat when your cells go into overload. That’s just the normal cycle. This clean detox thing with juice makes me think that, once you are done with it, you are going to gain back the weight, tenfold.

But, this is just my own personal opinion.

Scary thought to process, Gwyneth, scary indeed!

  46. Tabitha says:

I agree with Vicky above. I, too, am an avid Atkins dieter and have lost tons of weight and have never gained it back. I also feel great, better than I ever have in my life, and have no physical problems after being on Atkins for over 3 years.

This juice diet scares me to no end and I feel really bad for those who think it is worthy and something to try.

If you do, I’d highly suggest you check your resources and get the advice from other doctors who can elaborate/advise on this juice diet. I seriously doubt any good doctor would agree to it, especially over a 3 week period.
