Travis Scott will perform at the Super Bowl Half-Time show, but he had conditions

Leeds Festival - Day 2 - Performances

This year’s Super Bowl is going down in Atlanta, a city which has been experiencing a Black Renaissance for years. Atlanta is also home to a vibrant music scene, and it’s where many musical artists live, sometimes full-time sometimes part-time. With a city so multicultural, musical and diverse, you would think that the NFL would want their Half-Time Show to reflect the host city. Well, you would be wrong. The NFL hired Maroon 5, to much criticism, to be the headlining act for the Half-Time show. Give Adam Levine some credit – he knew the band would be screwed if they didn’t get some African-American artists to perform alongside them. Maroon 5 apparently reached out to many different artists, but many said no because the NFL is a racist organization and many artists are standing with Colin Kaepernick. I think Travis Scott was the only one to take Maroon 5 up on their offer. But Travis did have one request: he forced the NFL to join him in donating to an interesting charity:

Travis Scott today announced that in partnership with the National Football League, he will make a $500,000 donation to the non-profit organization Dream Corps, among “other initiatives that he will work with the League on.” The move is clearly designed to counter criticism over his appearance at the Super Bowl halftime show with Maroon 5 — which was finally confirmed, after weeks of speculation, precisely 30 minutes after Scott announced the donation on Sunday. Sources tell Variety that Black Lives Matter and other nonprofits may be receiving donations as well, although reps for those organizations either said they had not heard from Scott’s team or did not respond to requests for comment.

Both acts, particularly Scott, have come under fierce criticism in recent weeks because performing during the game — which is the biggest global stage for a musician, with an estimated 100 million viewers —is effectively an endorsement of the NFL’s treatment of former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick. The league’s stance toward the athlete, who has not played professionally since his controversial stance to “take a knee” during the National Anthem before games, has polarized audiences and significantly complicated this year’s halftime performance, among many other issues. Sources tell Variety that Maroon 5 spent weeks trying to confirm an act of color to perform with them.

Scott nodded to this situation in a statement announcing the donation. “I back anyone who takes a stand for what they believe in,” he said. “I know being an artist that it’s in my power to inspire. So before confirming the Super Bowl Halftime performance, I made sure to partner with the NFL on this important donation. I am proud to support Dream Corps and the work they do that will hopefully inspire and promote change.”

I wonder if the NFL said “no” to various charities or organizations and they eventually settled on Dream Corps. Dream Corps was started by CNN’s Van Jones, and its mission is vaguely about social justice and ending the school to prison pipeline and more. It would have been badass if Travis kept saying “no” until he got the NFL to donate money to Black Lives Matter. But I guess this was the compromise they worked out, and hey, Travis got the NFL to do more than they’ve ever done before. Still, I wonder about all the people who said no. And I wonder if Travis Scott is making a mistake. We’ll see.

Good for Travis Scott if he got the NFL to pony up some dough and donate to a charity of his choosing. He will get more national exposure for himself using their national platform. Everyone knows the NFL bungled the Kaepnernick and kneeling issue, so I think Travis comes out the winner here.

Sorry to sound like an old lady but does anyone even know who Travis Scott is?? Yes, I’ve heard of him but do we really think the majority of the NFL fans watching will know him? Lame.

    • Louisa says:

My 14 year old son and his friends love him, but I agree, not sure the majority of fans will have any idea who he is.

    • deezee says:

You’re right. The majority of people watching the Super Bowl will have no idea who he is. I certainly don’t. But that is why the musicians want this gig; to showcase their music to a potential new host of fans.

    • Erinn says:

He’s a big name. Maybe he won’t be familiar to the older folks, but a lot of younger people know who he is. They have to keep bringing in younger viewers, or the show will die out so it only makes sense for them to worry about names familiar to the younger generations.

His album Astroworld was a huge deal this year. It was the seventh best-selling album of 2018 on the US charts, right behind Cardi B’s album . Inescapable in the under 25 crowd. And he does have a “cool” rock star factor, he’s not super pop or accessible. So maybe it’s smart to have him pop in for a few songs and bring in a younger crowd.

It’s interesting because he’s been around for a while, and I definitely think this spike in interest is a case of his music maturing and deepening coinciding with the Kylie relationship to rocket him into a new level of fame. But yeah, he’s definitely one of the hottest young rappers out.

      • WelcomeToATL says:

Travis Scott is inescapable in the ***under 40 crowd. And nobody changes the channel during halftime if they already have the Super Bowl on the TV anyway. Travis Scott is an excellent entertainer- he’ll put on a show.

    • meh says:

Uh…..yes, a lot of people know who Travis Scott is.

    • whatWHAT? says:

I only know of him because of who he impregnated. (one of those artificially-inflated gluteus maximus ladies) like, I had literally never heard of him until that.

but I don’t think I’m the target demographic.

I’m frankly surprised that Maroon 5 was picked. they were popular, like, 10 years ago. nowadays Levine is known more for whatever singing talent show he’s on.

    • Jamie says:

Yes. This 45 year old lady has heard of him and even likes his new album Astroworld.

    • Wilady says:

Was listening to the Atlanta Monster podcast and they quoted one of his songs that spoke of the fear in growing up in Atlanta, wondering if you’d be the next young black boy to be taken and kidnapped. Because of hearing that and making the connection to him and Atlanta, this doesn’t feel as random to me. It seems to me that Atlanta is deep in his identity, so I think this is kind of cool and probably means a lot to him. I’m good with it.

  3. Renee2 says:

Um, the first mistake old Travis made was getting entangled with the Kardashian family.

We’ll see how this turns out. I am side-eying the f outta Big Boi though.

    • Tiffany says:

Outkast is a Atlanta institution, I see Antoine doing it. And it does not surprise me Andre was the hold out. Could you imagine if Outkast reunited…good lord, the insanity. The insanity.

      • WelcomeToATL says:

Big Boi has been active with Jermaine Dupri in all the entertainment and planning for the week in Atlanta leading up to Super Bowl Sunday. He’s a huge ambassador for the city, and a constant presence at the pro sporting events here. OutKast reunited for two huge shows in Centennial Park four years ago. Andre 3K keeps a MUCH lower profile than Big Boi, and I doubt he’d want to be part of the Super Bowl halftime show even if there wasn’t a Kaepernick/NFL/racism issue overhead.

    • Rose says:

When I heard Travis confirmed I said, “he would”. Anyone involved with the kardashians sold their soul long ago. Big Boi is a big disappointment.

  4. HelloSunshine says:

Isn’t he terrible live? I know that isn’t the topic at the moment but I’ve heard he isn’t very good live and his shows are kind of a mess lol

    • natalie says:

I had the opposite impression! I’ve seen so many viral videos of Travis jumping around stage like a maniac and the out-of-control mosh pit at his shows. Take a look: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vY-d2N8yx6s

It actually warms my heart to see that rebellious punk energy interpreted by the millennials/gen z.

      • HelloSunshine says:

Thanks for this! Now I’m wondering if I was mixing him up with some other young rapper because I can’t keep them all straight 😂 never thought I’d be late 20’s and feeling this out of touch!

  5. Nev says:

And still he will propose to Kylie and take over the game and the internet. Hahahahaha here’s hoping.

  6. Mac says:

The First Step act is based on Dream Corps #cut50 proposal. They are an effective organization and I am glad Scott made the NFL donate to them. Now I want to see a second donation to Campaign Zero.

  7. Kk2 says:

I have some sympathy for Travis Scott because he could really use the national exposure in a way that some of the other artists who reportedly said no (Rihanna, Cardi B) do not. I was surprised big boi said yes though.

  8. Dttimes2 says:

The ONLY reason Travis is appearing is because kris Jenner will use it to have him propose to Kylie live on air – what better way than an over the top “fire” way

  9. me says:

Does anyone think he’ll actually propose to Kylie during his perfromance? PMK must be salivating just thinking of this.
