Demi Lovato gets apology from journalist for headline that she has a ‘fuller figure’

Demi Lovato posted a message to her Instagram story late last week calling out an Inquisitr journalist, Fabio Magnacavallo, for writing a headline that she appeared “to have a fuller figure” in photos taken of her after a workout. A screenshot about this is below. [via Teen Vogue]

She posted follow up messages saying that she wasn’t personally upset, but that these type of headlines perpetuate diet culture and negative body images. I’m going to include those as text in case you can’t read the photos, which are in the gallery below.

Unlike the past I’m not triggered, I’m not upset that someone wrote a headline about my “fuler figure.” I’m angry that people think it’s okay to write headlines about people’s body shapes. Especially a woman who has been so open about being in recovery from an eating disorder. I’m not upset for myself but for anyone easily influenced by the diet culture.

Too many people today base their ideal body weight off of what OTHERS tell us we should look like or weigh. Articles like these only contribute to that toxic way of thinking . If you’re reading this:

Don’t listen to negative diet culture talk. You are more than a number on a scale.

And I am more than a headline about my body shape.

In response, Fabio direct messaged Demi apologizing for the headline and saying he learned his lesson. We know because she posted a screenshot to her stories and asked her fans to be nice to him. It was quite mature of both of them and I enjoyed reading their messages to each other. I’m including that below but in case you can’t read it he wrote things like “I’m really sorry, sincerely” and “I take full responsibility.”

Demi has matured quite a bit lately and I like how she handled this. I also appreciate her standing up for people who may feel marginalized or hurt by headlines like this. Representation matters and so does how we talk about celebrities and famous people. Now I would like to hear some new music from Demi. Whenever she’s ready, not to rush her, but she’s talented and I want her back in the studio.

I can’t stand her but holy SH*T am I tired of men (or women for that matter) who feel the need to comment on a women’s physique when they’re covering something like a concert, movie, TV show, WHATEVER.

And I’m sure this was a preconceived and deliberate choice of headline, intended to generate curious clicks, but really he needs to focus on her work in this situation.
And while the term he used wasn’t particularly offensive, if Demi’s struggled with eating disorders in the past, being called “full-figured” can be rally triggering.

      *woman’s and *really. Sigh.
      Need more coffee :/

      Kitten, YESSSS!!!

Honestly I’ve had few men ever comment on my weight it is usually women. Men for the most part have made so called “positive” (what they deem positive) comments, meaning they are in favor of it. The worst I’ve gotten from a man was “I liked your body better where you were fatter”. Women however low key shame other women all the time. From sabotaging with food choices when you are trying to eat better or the opposite bring up the subject of dieting when you didn’t bring up the topic. When I lost weight I got from other women all the time the line you are too skinny or you are now losing too much weight! I’ve even got “why are you lifting weights it will make you look like a man”!

No one should comment on weight, no one, unless you bring it up first.

Nope, some men still say “you have such a pretty face” while thinking “but your body could use a diet”…had it done to me and heard it done to other women. I flipped them my mental middle finger and i know it’s bigger than their private part…and i laughed out loud while the dude wondered what was so funny. As long as my man likes me as i am them other pluckers can go enhance themselves.

With addicts, weight gain is often a great sign of sobriety and should definitely not be commented on negatively! She seems like she’s doing well and is clean so good for her, and good for her for calling out the headline.

Yes. I’ve got an extended family member addicted to heroin and can tell right away if the lastest rehab stint is working by how thin or heavy they are. Eating is a good sign for an addict.

As if he had no clue. Eye roll.

I don’t know much about Demi but I have heard her sing and she can sing her peers like Selena, Taylor off the stage. When I saw that she had gained weight I was cringing thinking of how cruel people would be. Because how dare a woman put on weight!!! I hope all female celebs start calling each reporter out over headlines like this. These people don’t give others feelings a second thought when they spit out these toxic stories.

People’s weight, looks, sexuality, children etc should be out of bounds for all, and yes that includes us here commenting.

Demi is and has always been hyper focused on her weight. I think part of her early drug use was using uppers as an attempt to stay thin. Thad’s just speculation on my part, but just given her track record she seems to be very conscious of what people are saying even when she’s trying to stay body positive and live herself, etc. My hope for her is that she just accepts herself as she gets older and focuses on her health and stays away from the dang internet.

    • Bettyrose says:

I don’t really know anything about her, but uppers to stay thin have taken more lives in Hollywood than people like to talk about, so it’s not an off the wall speculation.

    • isabelle says:

Yes. Even her response to what happened shows her own obsession with weight. They get to her and the gossip hounds know it bothers her. Hence of the reason why they troll her with weight comments. Gossips columnists are trolls and they love attacking with what irks the celeb of choice.

  6. rose says:

She’s always been bigger (not fat ,she’s just not super skinny ) , she doesn’t look much different now . I think she looks great and hope she’s staying healthy.

  7. xo says:

Hmm. I wish Demi & anyone reading an observation like that about themselves could just involuntarily think: “Yeah. I look great.”

    . . .

My daughter began struggling with weight and body issues around age 10,early puberty, all that. She became bothered by the number on the scale and was weighing herself often.I took that damn scale and threw it away in front of her and told her point blank that she’s worth more than a number that shows up on some box.She is now 16 and we encourage health over weight. It isn’t easy, not even for me,but I’m proud to say she’s much more level headed about her body than many in her pier group, and one great thing that came from me having breast cancer last year is that I can be an example of loving a scarred, imperfect body.Take the good with the bad I guess, but being a woman and being judged on your body sucks.

  9. CK says:

I just seems so odd and out of place. Demi hasn’t had any dramatic weight gains/losses so the whole “fuller figure” headline just seems completely out of place. There is no context to describe her figure as “fuller” .

  10. Usedtobe says:

I still think that Demi needs to be off somewhere out of the public eye, getting better and figuring out her issues. She OD’s and BAM she’s back. Like girl, Go. Away. Take a couple years off and stay the F**k off social media too. I don’t believe she can get her issues and addictions fully under control while in the public eye.

And, of course, the a$$hole has no right to comment on any woman’s figure.

  11. Pandakeeper says:

I think she left me is better. Her face is pretty.
