Scarlett Johannson on how she shaped up for Iron Man – no carbs

Scarlett Johansson worked her ass off – literally, depending on your opinion – for her role as the Black Widow in “Iron Man 2.” I’ve complained in a few articles that she lost all of her beautiful curves, which to me are a big part of what sets her apart from most other actresses. But Scarlett quickly pointed out to the media that she lost weight and toned up for her role, not due to chronic Hollywood pressure. According to Jon Favreau, the film’s director, Scarlett did it with a low carb diet.

Even enviable-looking Scarlett Johansson couldn’t disguise her fear at having to don a skintight catsuit for her Iron Man 2 role as the Russian spy Black Widow.

“I kicked some major butt,” the actress, 24, told PEOPLE at Comic-Con of her training regimen to make her a shapely superhero ready for acrobatic battle scenes. “It was many, many, hours, days, and months of stunt training and strength training, but it’s fun because I had a goal. The goal was the Lycra catsuit.”

Was she happy with the results? “Finally I was, yes,” she said with a laugh. “You put that much work into something and you put it on and you better be happy with it.”

When it came to putting on the catsuit, “It was crazy to see it for the first time – everything all zipped up and all the weapons in there, bracelets on, the whole look. It was pretty sweet, I have to say,” she says.

As for the impression it made, “Certainly walking on set, because a lot of the people that worked on the film were fans of the comic and of course they knew the Black Widow – they were all super excited to see the Black Widow,” she says. “When everybody in the crew were like, ‘That looks awesome!’ I knew. Like, ‘Okay.’ ”

“She was wearing an unforgiving costume,” concurred Johansson’s Iron Man 2 director Jon Favreau, who was impressed by his star’s physical commitment to the role. “She didn’t eat much, that’s for sure. She likes food, as do I, and she was definitely on a low-carb diet and training very hard. It was amazing.”

After viewing Johansson’s stunt work, Favreau says, “I think people are going to be very impressed when they see her. It’s totally different than anything you’ve seen her do before.”

Before people go off on Scarlett about a low carb diet, keep in mind Jon didn’t say she was doing the Atkins diet. They’re not the same thing. There are all sorts of low carb and modified carb diets that are not bacon and butter based. I’m a big fan. Well, not a big fan of doing them, but I’m a big fan of the results. I can’t deny the Scarlett looks great; I just loved how she looked before. I can’t think of many actresses who could rock curves the way she could. I can’t help but hope she relaxes a bit and goes back to her natural shape. She’s gorgeous either way, but I’m a fan of the more realistic look.

Here’s Scarlett at the LA Shorts Fest opening night on July 23rd. Images thanks to WENN.com .

Ah yes, the ‘make your breath stink, high protein, have one bite of cereal and blow up like a balloon’ diet. She’ll be back to her old body pretty soon, I suspect.

  2. Guttersnipey says:

    Oh, maaaaan! *sniff*

She doesn’t look BAD now, but she DOES look kinda boring.

I never thought I would say this, because I’m a hetero female and I’ve never been a ScarJo fan, but I dearly miss the boobs. This new Scarlett is entirely depressing.

  3. the original kate says:

i think she looked better heavier. in these photos she looks like a total bobblehead.

  4. I’m with everyone else. Scarlett Johannson looks much better with more weight. I’m also not a Scarlett fan, but I do think she is very pretty.

  5. Wench. says:

    I’m GUTTED.

I was such a ScarJo supporter but she really isn’t much withuot those superb hips (and the reason I always wanted more at KFC)

I need a reason to get Large at takeouts, bitch!

  6. lrm says:

Um,how would be ‘know’ if other actresses could ‘rock the curves’ like she does? Have many given it a chance?
GOOP could stand to gain some weight,IMO,along with her pal madonna.
Aside from obese celebs like kirstie alley and rosanne, everyone else is mainly stick thin on purpose.
I wish a few more would try to let their natural physique show, like scarlett did prior.
    It was refreshing.
And,her hairdo with the thinner frame does her face no good. bobble head, indeed.

  7. jillie says:

looks aside, shes a sucktacular “actress”

  8. Orangejulius says:

Yeah, her acting skills leave a lot to be desired. She’s just not convincing at all. Also, can she please come up with something other than that pigeon-toed stance in all her pictures?

  9. icky says:

her face was prettier when she was heavier

  10. Rosanna says:

She looks SO MUCH better now it’s amazing!

  11. texasmom says:

I think her face looks too hard with all that weight off.

  12. Dorrie says:

Scarlett is doing what many pretty young actresses do – changing her “look” in the hope of getting more roles. That may work for a while. But if she wants a lasting career, she should work on developing her acting skills. I think she has potential there; just not mature enough to focus on it.

  13. Feebee says:

I don’t think she’s changed to get more roles, she’s just changed for THIS role. Renee put it on for Bridget, Scarlett takes it off for the Black Widow. No matter how high your self esteem is, until you’re face to face with a skin tight lycra body suit… I’m sure she’ll return to her usual size and shape post-black widow requirements.

  14. Gistine says:

Anything to keep her from singing.

  15. Bina says:

Oh man! I listen to that one song she sings on the He’s Just Not that Into You soundtrack and it’s hideously fascinating… like a car crash.

  16. saintdevil says:

Sorry, but I think she looks great. She isn’t stick thin and her boobs haven’t “vanished”.

  17. Ned says:

and how have she “shaped” her new face?

Does a nose job comes with the salad?

    How about her cartoonish lips?

Her face is beginning to look like Jessica Biel’s.

I wonder if they shared the same doctor.

  18. BlueSkies says:

Her big chin and jaw ruin her

  19. sickofit says:

the nose job is not a good one

  20. fizXgirl314 says:

yeah it’s too bad there is no diet to improve your acting skills…:/

  21. fizXgirl314 says:

“When everybody in the crew were like, ‘That looks awesome!’ I knew. Like, ‘Okay.’ ”

i swear everytime i hear this woman talk, i feel like i’m listening to an infant…

and why are all female superheroes wearing tight leather outfits? that doesn’t seem practical :/

  22. crash2GO2 says:

I think she still looks very healthy and curvy. I like that you can see the lovely bone structure of her face a bit more now. Either way, she is a beautiful woman who breaks out of the super skinny mold. Bravo!

  23. AC says:

wow okay. you know nothing about the Atkins diet. If you’d read the Atkins book you’d see that it is not BASED on bacon and butter. Can you have bacon and butter and still lose weight? Yes.

Atkins diet is about meat and veggies veggies veggies veggies. What meat you choose is your choice… you CAN lose weight eating high fatty meats and veggies and no carbs but its up to you what you put in your body. Atkins warned against bacon especially because of the nitrates.

Basically if she did a restricted carb diet she most likely did a version of the Atkins diet. Why you single out the Atkins diet I’m not sure as it seems to be the punching bag of lo carb diets. You obviously didn’t read the books so why bash it?

  24. BluePlanet says:

She’s not toned, she just lost some fat. And I agree with the pigeon toed comment.

  25. F1fan says:

User “AC”- You’re an idiot. Thanks for the intro to Atkins diet 101, however there is one thing, Nobody cares! I realize your lecture was posted a couple months ago, and you’re probably busy regurgitating your Atkins praise on obese ears by now, but I’m bored and felt like doing a little fat bashing. I’m sure speaking about food and carbs gives you a hard-on, but just try to keep your drooling to a minimum and stick to the subject (not the history of carb dieting).
