Lana Del Rey on her cop boyfriend: ‘He’s a good cop…He sees both sides of things’

Lana del Rey keeps it casual while leaving Wednesday night Church service in Beverly Hills

Is it just me or has Lana del Rey seemed almost happy during her promo for her new album? She’s always seemed, to me, like America’s Moody Depressive Witchy Retro Queen. And that was fine. Her brand was “crying because of Jackie Kennedy’s pink suit.” Maybe that’s still her brand as a singer, but her personal life seems… fine. She seems happy. It’s so weird. Recently, we learned that Lana is dating a COP. His name is Sean Larkin and he’s an analyst on A&E’s Live PD. He’s 46 years old (but he looks older because he’s got a full head of grey hair). The idea that Lana has daddy issues is not surprising in the least, but the idea that she’s happy because her older cop boyfriend/zaddy makes her happy is very surprising. But Lana wants us to know that it’s fine. She chatted recently with the LA Times, which you can read here. Some highlights:

On her happiness reflecting in her music: “There’s room now. There’s a little bit of a lightness to some of the stuff.”

Why she’s doing more press this time: “It’s just that people like it. I’m like, “Alright! Let me tell you about the album!” I remember when I made [the 2014 album] “Ultraviolence,” I put so much work into it. I mixed on my own console for months. And then I did extensive interviews and no one cared that I mixed anything. So I stopped promoting after that. I was like, “Honeymoon,” “Lust for Life” … just take them.”

Whether people misjudge her perfectionism as aloofness: “Maybe my privacy as aloofness. I’m not a perfectionist. My live shows are not perfect. They’re not choreographed to a T.

Being photographed with her boyfriend Sean “Sticks” Larkin, a cop from the reality show “Live PD.” “I didn’t know we were being photographed. I would’ve worn something different.”

Whether she was caught off guard with the photos:
“Yeah. It’s funny because I was with someone for years and we never had that problem.

Whether she worries about dating a cop: “Well, the thing is, he’s a good cop. He gets it. He sees both sides of things.

Does she mind that people care about her personal life? “Hell no. I care about what Bob Dylan is doing right now. I’m curious to know if he’s wearing a hoodie or a blazer. I get it.

Whether she watches TV: “I watch a lot of reality TV. I’m obsessed with “The Bachelor.”

The brutality of her songs: “It’s brutal out there! Even good guys don’t know what toxic masculinity is. My friends and I didn’t either. We had bad experiences that we didn’t share with each other. We were like, “Oh, that was so stupid that I got myself into that.” Now, we realize, “Oh, you actually didn’t.”

Her latest inspo. “Lately, I was so inspired by Greta Thunberg. I’m not saying it’s similar to what I’ve experienced, but it’s interesting when people say how “angry” she is. I think one of the reasons that climate-change advocates haven’t made more progress is because they are kindhearted. It’s not the Trumpian way of the iron fist. It’s very interesting to see someone who’s so young come off as so angry, and then see people’s reactions. I’m sure she smiles and is nice to her family, but why should she smile at people who are killing the planet? I really like when she said something to the effect of, “I don’t want to hear you say that we understand and we hear you. Because if that were really true, it would mean you were evil, because you’re not taking any action.” I think that line also sums up the #MeToo movement … and every cultural shift we’ve been experiencing lately.

[From The LA Times]

That’s an interesting observation about Greta Thunberg and the anger of a girl and how people – mostly men – react to it. That being said, did people ever talk about Lana being “angry”? No? We talk about how she’s sad. As for her cop boyfriend being one of the good ones… I hope so. Because as I get older, I would NEVER. I just hear too many horror stories about what it’s really like to date a cop and that makes me worry a little bit about Lana.

Isn’t her boyfriend on that reality show Live 48 something on A&E? Or he used to be??
That show is TRASH and so are all the cops who are on it. I recently listened to an investigative podcast about shows like Cops and that one and it’s HORRIFYING what these cops do to people. Harassment, drug planting, set ups….yeah her boyfriend isn’t a “good cop”.

    • EEEE says:

Me too! Running with Cops, it was so eye opening.

      • Valiantly Varnished says:

THAT’S the name of it! I was having a brain fart and couldn’t remember it. VERY eye opening. And disgusting.

    • CuriousCole says:

The show Cops is despicable, I wish they’d stop airing it, but I believe Lana’s Larkin was on a different one, Live PD or something PD, where the featured police are actually decent human beings. I’m still puzzled by how vastly different the two shows are.

      • Valiantly Varnished says:

Live PD is the show Im referring to. And it’s utter garbage. I HIGHLY suggest you listen to Running with Cops podcast. It does a DEEP dive into Live PD. The cops on Live PD are crooked AF.

  2. Eenie Googles says:

Anyone affiliated with that show cannot be a “good guy”. It’s exploitative garbage that targets minorities and low income people for arrests so they can be humiliated for ratings.

    He’s a loser by association.

  3. Lala11_7 says:

    I’ve seen his online postings…

She’s on utter BS with this stance…and I am telling you…her hooking up with him…SURPRISED ME NOT IN THE LEAST….

With her wanna be Sarah McLachlan…but will NEVA ass….

And Kaiser…Not dating a cop…is the ONLY romantic advice my Mama STAMPED into my soul….I kid you NOT about THAT! And life has proven her correct…

  4. Stef says:

Cops get a bad wrap but they are generally good people with a sardonic sense of humour. I was married to a top cop for a while and have dated another brass member. You can’t generalize all of them because of a few bad apples.

I’m glad Lana is happy, it’s nice to see.

    • Valiantly Varnished says:

And yet the “good” one stay silent and even protect the bad ones. Go figure.

    • MrsBanjo says:

The bit about “bad apples” is always misused and it’s funny to me. The phrase is “A few bad apples spoils the bunch.” So you using that to dismiss people’s concerns about cops is interesting. The “few bad apples” as you say, are murdering people. They’re profiling people. They’re following people for no reason other than they don’t “look right.” The few bad apples are rotting the whole barrel, and the whole is clearly not interested in getting rid of the rot.

      • Valiantly Varnished says:

        BINGO.

      • Stef says:

        Mrs Banjo,

I used bad apples as a general analogy, knowing that this thread had already started cop bashing and it would come up as a main subject here.

I’m Canadian so our cops are different than in the US. Most of the cops I’ve known at the brass level are good people and good cops. Most cops are actually great but where are always a few that abuse their power. We rarely hear about the good cops do because news generally highlights the bad things and they don’t invest in PR.

I stand by my first hand knowledge of being married to a top cop and dated another. Most cops are good but I can tell you’d rather talk about how bad a few cops are. I won’t change your mind, but I’m sure if you actually knew a few cops as close friends, you’d think differently.

      • Valiantly Varnished says:

@Stef You’re Canadian?? So how can you even BEGIN to think you can speak on this subject?? Seriously.
And having spoken to and listened to stories from Indigenous people from Canada I have majorly side eye your characterization of Canadian police.

      • sammiches says:

Yeah, our Canadian cops just racially profile First Nations people and beat people up while incarcerated. They’re sooooooo different than American cops.

      • MrsBanjo says:

Your cops are not remotely different than ours. Your First Nations peoples can explain it to you if you’re confused. Also, Atatiana Jefferson. She was in her house, walking around her bedroom and a cop shot and killed her in 4 seconds because some neighbour called in a “wellness check”. Stephon Clark in his own backyard, murdered by cops. Tamir Rice. 12 years old. Murdered by police while playing with a toy. And those are just three. This shit happens every day. But sure. Cops are the ones we can trust in an emergency.

Go away with that nonsense and deal with your own country’s racism – oh wait. You’re choosing to ignore it, as demonstrated by your ridiculous comments here.

      • Jadedone says:

Look I know Canada is far from perfect and the treatment of indigenous people has been horrendous but I dont think it’s fair to say Canadian cops are the same as American police. First off there was only four fatal police shootings in all of Canada last year compared to 1165 police involved shootings in the US. That’s a HUGE difference. Canadians also dont have the same prevelence of gun crime which could also be a factor? Either way I’m not saying Canadian police are perfect but we do not have the same issues that have become so (scary and) prevalent in the USA in the last few years.

    • Eenie Googles says:

You “can’t generalize all of them” …unless you are saying they are “generally good people”.

      Gotcha.

      • Valiantly Varnished says:

Lol, right?? She knows a few good ones to she feels comfortable generalizing that “most” are good. But we shouldn’t generalize the other way around?? They always tell on themselves.

      • Stef says:

        @Valiently Varnished

Yes, I am Canadian and can speak on this subject from a place of knowledge. You think you’re an authority on the subject because you’ve listened to some bad experiences from first nation’s people? Nice work trying to see the other side.

I married a top cop and got to know many members of the force, I also heard of everything happening through my husband’s command. I know a great deal more about my city’s police force than you could imagine.

I see the good cops do, and the bad, and I don’t envy the often life and death decisions officers make everyday.

So much hate and negativity here for our police but they’ll still be there if you need them in the middle of the night.

    • Erin says:

Generally good people with a sardonic sense of humor? What in the actual fuck?

  5. MariaS says:

Look, cops are either killing Black people like it’s a sport or fully supporting those that do so she needs to stop with the he’s a good cop b.s. Until cops start holding their own responsible for their crimes, stop that disgusting Blue Lives Matter co-opting of the BLM movement, and acknowledge and root out the white supremacists in their ranks, they’ll always be modern day slave patrols. Knowing a cop that was good to you doesn’t change anything I wrote.

    • drea says:

Hope you never need one when you are in trouble.

      I’m not that small minded.

I see cops working with the neighborhood groups in high crime areas, trying to make a difference.

I see cops who are racist and horrifying.

I don’t try to change people’s minds who are the extreme on any point of view. Why bother.

      • Valiantly Varnished says:

Huh. You mean like that cop that was sent on a welfare check by a concerned neighbor and shot and killed the woman he was supposed to be checking on??
Black folks don’t call cops hun. Because people literally wind up dead when we do.

      • drea says:

Don’t call me hun please, it’s condescending.
I didn’t say anything near what you are implying I said.
If you can have a real conversation, we can.

      • GirlMonday says:

“Hope you never need one when you’re in trouble”

I know a lot of people who don’t call the cops when they are in trouble because they have first-hand experience with the cops being more trouble than the trouble they are experiencing. Just ask Atianna Jefferson…oh wait…

      • Valiantly Varnished says:

It was meant to be condescending. Just as condescending as your reply to MariaS. I have no interest in having a convo with you on this. You see cops making a difference in high crime areas? Lol. I grew up in a high crime area. All they did was harass and racially profile. And when you DID need their help they were nowhere to be found.

      • drea says:

        Continue your conversation among yourselves.

Problems will never be solved, issues will never be addressed until people on all sides can have open, honest, painful conversations.

I see most of you aren’t ready yet.

      • Valiantly Varnished says:

“most of you aren’t ready yet”. But I’M condescending?? Lol. Black folks and POC have been trying to have this convo for literally DECADES. You just showed up to the party and have the audacity to talk about people not being ready??
        Girl, BYE.

      • drea says:

I didn’t know we knew each other! Do you recognize me? When did we meet? Have we discussed this issue before? When did we discuss our ethnicity, beliefs, social views, political views? I must be blanking…

        Goodbye to you also!

  6. Amber says:

With the epidemic of police violence in this country, I don’t automatically assume all of them are murderers, but I do automatically distrust all of them, because certainly lots of them are murderers. It’s in the data! This is a measurable phenomenon. I was in the Bay Area for seven years and both Oakland and SF PDs are so corrupt that they’ve been under independent investigations for years about using underage prostitutes, racial profiling, violence, etc. I am worried about Lana, because she tends to pick a certain kind of guy, a guy who’s bad news. This is just another one. And it’s a weird match. I want her to find an adjunct literature professor in his early forties who doesn’t care about fame and just worships the ground she walks on.

    • AustenGirl1975 says:

I want that adjunct literature professor in his early forties to have a living wage, health insurance, and job security instead of someone’s ground to worship. I understand your romanticized notion, but capitalism and corporate America are waging a full-on attack against higher ed, and anybody teaching in the Humanities, especially adjunct faculty, are the most vulnerable.

  7. Beach Dreams says:

Lana always shows her lack of depth when talking about anything political and/or serious. She’s essentially one of the most superficial types of ‘liberals’ rather than being a true progressive. This “he’s a good cop” (lol) comment is just another demonstration of her privilege of being a wealthy white girl for basically her entire life.

  8. lucy2 says:

I’d be hesitant to get involved with a cop. I’d be hesitant to get involved with anyone on a reality show. This sounds like a very bad combo.

The cops around me seem to be a mixed bag – some decent guys, some awful (several of a very small department got arrested themselves and kicked off the force). But this is a pretty low crime area, and not terribly diverse, so I know my experience is vastly different than many others. I can’t imagine what people of color go through in dealing with the police, and being scared of being killed for traffic stop, when I just worry about a getting a ticket.

On a much more pleasant note, I bought her latest album after people here recommended it, and I LOVE it.

  9. Whistlewhileyoutwerk says:

It’s obnoxious and hypocritical how she came for Kanye for supporting Trump if she was already seeing this obviously Republican Trump supporter cop (and you’d have to be dumb to think a middle-aged white cop from Oklahoma voted for Hillary). Talented singer but vapid and lacking empathy when it comes to her political beliefs when she stupidly said she was both liberal and Republican. No one with even a modicum of compassion can support the GOP these days. No one.

She can create a fun, sexual fantasy involving being chased by cops because she knows she won’t be riddled with bullets as a white, privileged woman.

  10. Piptopher says:

40% of police officer families experience abuse at the officers hands. The reason the US will never make domestic violence an automatic loss of ability to carry a weapon is because it would result in nearly half of all cops to be unarmed. ACAB
