Olivia Newton John’s boyfriend of nine years, Patrick McDermott, went missing off the coast of California in 2005. McDermott’s wallet and keys were found in his fishing boat and it was assumed that he had fallen overboard and drowned. Newton John, 60, was said to have been heartbroken. She has moved on, and married natural health supplement entrepreneur last year.

A team of private investigators hired by NBC show Dateline claimed earlier this year that McDermott, who owed thousands in debts, had faked his death. The investigators set up a website, findpatrickmcdermott.com, primarily to log visitors. They found that there were many hits coming into the site from “a boat traveling along the Mexican coastline as far as South America.” (You can trace a visitor’s location using their computer’s IP address, or unique identifier.) The site was also being accessed from the very same hotels where Olivia-Newton John was staying during her tour last year.

These same investigators claim to be in touch with someone who has sent faxes and spoken to them as a “representative” of McDermott. The representative is asking them to quit sniffing around and to leave the guy alone. McDermott is thought to be working as a deckhand on boats in Mexico:

he bankrupt cameraman left Grease star Miss Newton-John heartbroken after he went on a fishing expedition around San Pedro, California, and never returned.

Items that belonged to Patrick were left on the boat, including his wallet and keys.

It was widely assumed that the 48-year-old, who had dated the singer for nine years, fell overboard and drowned.

Close friends said Miss Newton-John took years to deal with the grief and uncertainty about what had happened, amidst mounting speculation he had staged his own death to escape mounting debts.

She has since found love again with herb tycoon John Easterling, 57, and the couple celebrated their first wedding anniversary last month.

Over the past few years there have been 16 sightings of Patrick in Mexico.

Now investigators hired to find out exactly what had happened claim they have received a fax letter sent on his behalf.

Philip Klein, the private investigator leading the probe, said he and his team have had three phone calls from people claiming to be McDermott’s representatives in the past six months.

Further evidence suggesting he faked his death has also been uncovered by detectives and the U.S. Coast Guard.

It has emerged that McDermott secured a second passport in his birth name Patrick Kim and withdrew life savings from two bank accounts before vanishing.

The most recent fax insisted he had fled California to get out of the rat race and spotlight.

It said: ‘Pat has asked that I portray to you his innocence. Pat has committed no crime. Pat simply wishes to be left alone.

‘Let him live his life in peace and harmony. He is safe and has started anew again in a new place both physically and mentally.

‘Stop this search immediately.’

Mr Klein and his team have evidence that shows McDermott now works as a deckhand in the small Mexican fishing town of Sayulita – a favourite with drifters.

They also believe he has worked on a yacht.

McDermott is divorced from former actress Yvette Nipar, and reportedly owed back child support to her for their now teenage son.

[From The Daily Mail]

There’s something so intriguing about a guy faking his death and living a carefree life as a sailor. It’s the stuff of movies, but this guy left behind a teenage son and a girlfriend. Do you think they knew that McDermott was alive and well? If he’s so willing to talk to private investigators, he probably told the people close to him that he needed to disappear. He seems to have done it primarily to avoid child support payments, so maybe his son was in the dark too. It may sound daring to leave everything behind and fake your own death, but it’s more cowardly than anything else. How lame that this guy even contacted investigators. He should have wised up and stopped going to that website or set up a proxy so that he couldn’t be traced. Maybe he really wants to be found. There’s some cash to be made in selling his story, although he’ll have to face charges first.

I feel very sad for his son, knowing that his father faked his own death to get away from the obligation of caring for him. That will leave a scar I’m sure will never heal.

I know there has been speculation that ONJ knew about it, but I think she was a victim. You don’t spend 9 years of your life with a person and then let them think you’re dead! This guy must have major issues besides money.

Isn’t faking your own death a crime??

  3. Hieronymus Grex says:

Assuming it actually came from him and not some sick prankster or some thug kidnapper or extortionist.

  4. ! says:

How painful it would be to find out that someone you loved very much faked their own death.

  5. gg says:

What a d!ckweed. This is the worst thing he could do morally – fake his death.

Skipping out on child support and the IRS are crimes, pallie.

  6. lord7131 says:

Faking your death only becomes a crime if you profit from it i.e insurance. He will face the courts for dodging support payments and that will include jail time and also the insurance company will file charges of fraud and he is going to jail any which way you look at it.

  7. the original kate says:

wow – that is messed up. who would do that to their loved ones? he sounds like a coward to me – if you are that unhappy at least have the balls to walk away and start again, but to make people think you died is just cruel. as for ONJ, i love her – wait till the pink ladies hear about this!

  8. maddie says:

There was a case where a woman faked her own death to get away from an abusive boyfriend and moved to Florida, she left her sister and mother thinking she died, I think it’s selfish and down right mean to to that to your own family.

I bet this guy was living way above his means and got into debt that way. Really how much can an camera man make, mean while he dating a rich woman who has more money than him, he must of whipped out his CC more than once to pay the bill.

  9. nona says:

    WOW!!!
I thought this kind of things only happened in the movies!!

  10. Niamh says:

If he didn’t commit a crime he should be left alone. He has to live in hiding for the rest of his life.. The guy’s not living in heaven.

Fascinating story CB, please keep us updated on this!

  11. jeannified says:

Very sad indeed, that this guy did this to ONJ and his son! How dispicable!

  12. BOGART4017 says:

Sounds like something out of “Days of our Lives”

    re: committing a crime…

it’s more than just insurance money that’s at stake.

it’s the time and resources that the police/coast guard/rescue etc spent looking for him. being the cause of filing a (fake) police report is also a crime.

you’d also need to create a new identity, so there’s the old stealing a SSN or identity theft as well.

and there’s that whole pesky tax evasion thing, too.

  14. Nicole says:

Wow, I can’t imagine what I’d feel if I learned that a loved one faked his/her own death. What a cowardly thing to do!

By the way, I have to add that Olivia looks stunning in that photo above! Her smile is so radiant and her blue eyes really stand out. She’s a lovely and talented woman. Kudos to her being so strong.

  15. KateKap says:

faking your own death is a crime when it is done to avoid paying CS.

  16. Magsy says:

I think it’s a hoax and he’s dead. He wouldn’t do that to Olivia.

  17. british bitch says:

If he has faked his own death, he had his reasons to pull such a radical stunt, Imho. However, I think he´s dead and someone is pulling someones leg.
