Siba the poodle beat Daniel the Golden Retriever for Best in Show at Westminster and I could honestly write an entire rant about how tired I am when they give all of the major awards to poodles! Let other breeds win something! Daniel is a good boy! [Dlisted]

The poodle’s pictures are really funny, he comes across as arrogant lol “yeah i won what are you going to do about it”

    It just made my day

  2. Becks1 says:

I have a golden retriever, so I’m obviously biased, but Daniel completely should have won. LOOK AT HIS FACE!!!!! Such a happy gorgeous boy.

  3. Mrs. Peel says:

Daniel was outright robbed! That prim, prancing, freak of a non-dog shouldn’t even qualify.

    • ChillyWilly says:

Aw, Shiba isn’t a freak! It’s all her stoopid human’s fault! I bet she is gorgeous with her natural coat.

      • Spicecake38 says:

Thankyou! lol we have a mini poodle she is the smartest most loyal animal ever. She is black and white and we keep her long and curly, people stop and ask what kind of dog she is because we don’t do the crazy poodle cut.Poodles don’t have to look OTT.
        I had a golden as a young girl,so I love them too.

      • BellaBella says:

Fellow mini-poodle owner here. She’s sooo sweet and insanely smart. I give her a puppy cut, no bells and whistles. People are alway asking me what breed she is, because she doesn’t have any silly poodle attributes.

Also, separately, Kaiser, since when do poodles win all the prizes? I can’t even think of the last time a poodle won Westminster.

    • Erinn says:

Hey now. Poodles are fantastic, super intelligent, and actually fantasticly rugged sporting dogs.

Golden’s are the basic bitch of the dog world (I do love them too, I’m just kidding).

      • Becks1 says:

It is kind of funny/sad how poodles have gained this reputation as this prissy fancy dogs, when they are at the top of the list for intelligence (I think most dog intelligence lists put them at 2 or 3, behind border collies) and are bred to be working dogs like you said.

goldens are still better though. (see above.)

      • bananapanda says:

Standard Poodles should be in the sporting group! They’re fast enough to take down deer and a lot of people use them for birding. They’re sport and funny. Most Standards have a 1 inch coat all over which gives them the real dog shape.

      • Spicecake38 says:

      • Spicecake38 says:

        Sorry double post somehow.
Poodles were originally bird dogs, and they rank second behind border collies in intelligence.
They are far more rugged and sporty than portrayed, also they are considered French, and that’s fine by me,but there is debate suggesting they were originally German and the spelling was once Pudle vs poodle??
        Lovable dogs regardless.

      • EMF999 says:

@bananapanda – I agree! I don’t know why Standards are not in the Sporting Group. We have a 14 month-old black SPoo. She is the most amazing dog. Smart, funny, loving, protective, athletic and a total tomboy. It is so sad that people diss SPoos so much when they really are such wonderful hypoallergenic dogs. Now we have one, I cannot imagine ever having another breed of dog. My husband and I were so excited when Siba won. She is stunning.
As an aside, OMG I can only imagine how much work that hair took. Our SPoo is slightly froo-froo with a long top knot, ears, socks and a fluffy tail but otherwise with a short cut, however we still have to thoroughly comb her every night (which she hates and thus we hate) to stop matting.

      • BellaBella says:

Gotta agree on the fantastic-ness of poodles!!! The standards are hilarious when young with all their energy, and the older ones have the loveliest dispositions.

I have a mini-poodle who is whip-smart. They are the second smartest breed. I talk to her like a person. She understands full sentences. I am a poodles-forever dog-owner. Never want to have another breed.

    • blacktoypoodle says:

She is exquisite, as are ALL of the Very Good Girls and Boys. Don’t hate a dog because a human made topiary out of her hair. Do you hate a baby because of how a parent dressed it? It’s an incredible piece of art/skill that will be trimmed off now that she’s retired. She will be a regular curly short-haired poodle. Look up “Poodle Day” in Carmel, CA. Not a show.
And I’m going to make a little poster of that sexy bitch for my 6lb 8oz version of her. Because a little boy can dream.

  4. Lightpurple says:

    Daniel is a gorgeous golden.
    Siba seems totally over it.

  5. Deanne says:

I know a lot of people don’t agree, but I love Standard Poodles. We had two while I was growing up. They are really smart, love the water and were wonderful family dogs. We left them in their natural state with curly hair and they looked much better. The show grooming makes them look ridiculous.

    • kerwood says:

I prefer the standards with their natural hair.

      • paranormalgirl says:

Show grooming is so dumb. I have scotties and a westie and my scotties have short skirts and short eyebrows and a medium beard and my westie does not have the round poofy show cut.

    • Erinn says:

The best dogs I’ve ever encountered were my cousins standards. Smartest, most well behaved, sweet hearts. They clip them one length – shaggier in the winter, tighter clip in the summer.

      • Deanne says:

THat’s exactly what we did too. Siba is beautiful, but that hair looks like mine when my sister gave me a bad home perm and I kept trying to brush it.

      • justwastingime says:

Had labs growing up. as an adult our first dog was 1/2 lab 1/2 poodle but our latest dog is 3/4 standard poodle with the exact same body type and fur as the winner. We have him clipped short all year round ( we live in LA) and he is the best – sweetest boy ever – very athletic and very smart, loves kids and not terribly hyper. He is an all around awesome dog. Don’t hate on the standards because of dog shows..

    • Deanne says:

They aren’t hyper at all unless you ignore their need for exercise. We have a rescued Belgian Shepherd and a rescued Border Collie and love them to bits, but we’re still looking for Standard Poodle rescue that will fit our family. We have a lot of land for dogs to romp on but we also have two cats who they have to get along with. Honestly, I don’t think there is a single breed of dog that I don’t like. My sister has a Havanese because of family allergies and she’s so smart and sweet. I don’t love the whole pure-bred dog show thing, but I really love all of the dogs.

      • BellaBella says:

Most poodles I know have no issues with cats. There are poodle rescue organizations in the northeast. Not sure where you live.

The thing is, who would give up a poodle? They are the best dogs. I was incredibly lucky to find my little mini-poodle girl through petfinder.com!

      • Deanne says:

I live in Atlantic Canada now. My husband has an aversion for smaller dogs but I’m going to start looking into smaller poodles as rescue options as well. Our Belgian Shepherd is so massive, he scared an RCMP officer who was at a road stop. He literally though my husband had a bear in the car. Petfinder is the bomb. I’ve never had a pet from childhood until middle adulthood that hasn’t been from an animal rescue operation or a stray who wasn’t claimed. People like to crap on toy dogs, but even toy poodles are wonderful, loyal, smart, cuddly little dogs. Poodles, whatever the size are smart and wonderful additions to any household.

      • Erinn says:

Deanne, not sure if you’ll see this, but my cousins standards are all from Atlantic Canada. She takes them for super long hikes out around Halifax, but she’s even taken them to Newfoundland hiking.

  6. Tiffany says:

It was Oscar So White and now it is Westminsters Always Poodles.

  7. olliesmom says:

that haircut and that attitute! I don’t think that even looks like a dog. It makes me think of a baboon.

  8. Jerusha says:

Westminster is about 150 years old. Poodles have won 10 times. They’re hardly hogging the show. As someone whose first 15 or so dogs were poodles, I say yay, congrats, Siba. You go, girl!

And to add, ALL dogs are wonderful and deserve to win.

    • Spicecake38 says:

Ours is 2 and she’s a mini, our first poodle, and as you say all dogs are great, but I don’t think we’ll ever get another dog that isn’t a pure bred poodle, she is just like a tiny furry human, one of the family and sooo smart.I really wasn’t wanting another dog until we got her, such a sweet little girl…

    • NeoCleo says:

I’ve kept poodles my whole life and I am 63 years old. I love dogs, have never met one I didn’t like (wish I could say the same about my fellow humans) but poodles are my favorite. They make wonderful companions. Yes, they are SCARY smart, have wonderful senses of humor and they are much cleaner fur-wise than most other dogs. Yes, the show haircuts are ridiculous but keeping a short basic clip on poodles makes them easy to care for and shows off their beautiful confirmation.

  9. jules says:

so. much. attitude. in that poodle photo, she deserves the win.

  10. jules says:

and snoop’s tirade against king was out of control and way out of line.

  11. Eugh says:

    Justice for Bourbon the whippet!

    • H says:

Bono the Havanese was cute too.

      • paranormalgirl says:

I love Havanese. I kind of want one.

      • Deanne says:

My sister has a Havanese. She’s a great little dog. Smart, loving and great with kids. Also, wonderful for people with allergies to other dog breeds.

      • nicegirl says:

My darling gal is a Maltese and she is the best ever. I thought that lil Havenese was so dang cute though. I’m looking for a pet doggie friend for my son age almost 22, he’s getting a place where he can have a pet in June and we’re really looking forward to it. He’s at school and misses his cats and pup’s emotional support.

    • pottymouth pup says:

the hounds always get the short end of the stick

  12. CJW says:

Love love love the Michael Kors collection!!

    • Juliette says:

Me too!! So many things I would buy out of that collection. Love it.

    • lucy2 says:

I do too – most of it is very wearable and not over the top. The black dress is really pretty, I expect we’ll see that on a red carpet eventually.

  13. ChillyWilly says:

Ugh, why do they have to inflict this awful haircut on these poor dogs? Poodles are so cute with a short curly coat. Daniel the Golden is sooooo handsome! 😍

    • EMF999 says:

Believe it or not, there is a good reason for the cut. Poodles were bred for water retrieving (they actually have webbed feet) so having long hair all over was not a good thing as it weighed them down. So – feet are shaved to help swim, back is shaved to allow them to swim freely but with long hair at front and in patches on back and joints to protect organs (including kidneys) from cold and joints from injury. Hair was tied on head in a bow of some sort to help with identification and face shaved to help with retrieving.

  14. kerwood says:

I’m not a dog person but I watched the final hour and even though I was cheering for the Golden Retriever (so sweet), the poodle deserved the win. Siba was outstanding!

  15. Juliette says:

As an avid hockey fan, I can’t say I’m the least bit surprised about Jeremy Roenick. He’s been an arrogant, loud mouth jerk for a long time. From dirty play to questionable comments through the years, he’s really not a nice man at all. Good riddance.

  16. KellyRyan says:

My sister had two standard poodles, curry colored and loved them. I raised and bred Hungarian Vizlas, loved them, hiked with them. What I don’t like is a foo foo decorated dog in competition with working and sporting dogs.

    • Deanne says:

My brother has Vizlas, Ildiko and Csaba. They are wonderful dogs. His wife is Hungarian and her family have had them for years.

  17. TeamAwesome says:

I just want to say I love how many of these comments are about the dogs!
I always cheer for the beagles and the toy group!

  18. Kate says:

I can’t ever dissociate the Westminster dog show with this SNL sketch now https://youtu.be/2S2gQjTURvU

  19. Melissa says:

An Alaskan Malamute never wins because they are just too sassy and have no ——- to give lol.

  20. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

The award should go to the stylist.

  21. Flamingo says:

The giant breeds get robbed! I guess it’s because they can’t prance. My Newfoundlands couldn’t prance even if they tried. The best they can do is lumber about.

    • Gwendolyn says:

At least the Newfies have won once. Great Danes and Mastiffs never make the cut (though this year the mastiff did come in 3rd in group!)

Short haired dogs always seem at a disadvantage because grooming doesn’t hide anything.

I was rooting for Daniel because he just seemed so sweet. And if anyone was robbed it was Bono, the Havanese, because he’s the #1 dog in the country on the dog show point system.

But its that ridiculous show cut and the fact poodles have at least won before that let Siba down in public opinion.

    • whatWHAT? says:

my coworker’s mother breeds Newfies and sometimes we get puppy visits.

you wanna talk LUMBERING? those puppies are like baby bears and lumber and stumble is all they can do. oh, and DROOL. but they’re so FLOOFY and cute!

  22. The Recluse says:

I am just waiting for THE Corgi to come along and take all the trophies. But they always go for the same round robin of breeds in these overrated shows.

  23. Bella says:

Omg! I love all dogs and I want them all to win, but Sibu is hilarious! He looks like he is totally over it and know he is the cutest!

  24. dynastysurf says:

Daniel is adorable and his moment will come, I’m sure, but Siba was *something* – like that dog knew she looked good and was doing a good job and you could tell. She had real spark to her. The internet’s rallying around Daniel has been cracking me up these past few days though. I love it.

  25. lucy2 says:

Siba is cute but the haircut makes her look like a cartoon of a poodle! The Golden is beautiful. All dogs are good. 🙂

  26. Michelle says:

I watch the WKC Dog Show every year and I love looking at all the different breeds of dogs. They are all so unique and beautiful. I thought Thor the boxer was really cute, but I don’t hold one breed over the other because I am a 100% cat person.

    • Spicecake38 says:

I was a cat person too, until we got a Himalayan who detested everyone in our household,I think it’s funny, don’t get me wrong, but She ruled with such disdain for us all,lol-it’ll be a while before I bring another kitty home.It was exhausting being that actively disliked and ignored I felt uncomfortable in my own home 😂

      • Anita says:

Lol aww it’s hard when kitties don’t want your love. My advice-get your next cat from a small rescue org and talk to the foster carer about the cats personality so you can get a sweet and snuggly kitty. I’d also get a cat not a kitten as kittens personalities can change but cats tend to be set in their ways.

      • Aang says:

We have a calico like that. She hates everyone and everything but my son. I get a withering stare if I even try to sit quietly in the same room as this cat. When my son isn’t home I’m allowed to fill her bowl but she lets me know how displeased she is with my existence while I do it.

  27. Annetommy says:

The dog is fine, the clip is ridiculous. Golden retrievers are kind of boring.

    • westcoastbestcoast says:

Crazy but the clip is for a reason, poodles are water dogs, so that’s why them and Port. Water Dogs are cut similar – it’s to keep the body warm in cold water while allowing their hind quarters to be free for swimming. I agree though, unless they’re swimming for an actual job, let’s leave the janky hairstyle by the wayside.

  28. Leah says:

Odd looking poodle but I suppose it’s just the haircut. I’m more of a cat person but I always liked the old English sheepdog and the basset hound.

Always liked that movie “best in show”. How some owners go to hilarious ends to meet their goal of winning the top prize and they get into battles over squeaky toys shaped like bumble bees.

  29. westcoastbestcoast says:

Listen, I watched this live (because I’m a Captain Holt level dog nerd) and Siba WORKED that floor. Sure I was rooting for Daniel, who wouldn’t (although my heart was broken when Bourbon the Whippet came in reserve, HE WAS SO BEAUTIFUL WITH THE MOST SOULFUL SAD EYES HOW COULD YOU LET HIM DOWN WESTMINSTER!?!?!?), but Siba really was amazing.

That being said, if I see another damn boxer win best in group, I’m going to lose it. God I’m not a boxer person. I don’t even like bulldogs to be honest (all brachycephalic dogs need a breed standard overhaul for health reasons alone!) but Thor the bulldog was freaking adorbs.

  30. RoyalBlue says:

I love poodles and she was perfect. I can talk about my dog all day. He is a cockerpoo who has a poodle dad and cocker spaniel mother. Unfortunately he didn’t quite get the chill zen nature of a poodle but he is so smart, easy to train and a wonderful family dog. Great with cats too. We send him to doggie day care a few days a week to socialize with other dogs and he is a favorite there. I love that he doesn’t shed, hair just comes out when we brush him.

  31. Emily says:

Not a Siba fan. Daniel was incredible. The slow mo shots of Bono’s exceptional moustache blowing in the wind gave me life.

  32. Debra Horn says:

I own three Standard Poodles. They are wonderful, beautiful, loving dogs. Poodles have only won Best In Show five times. I am happy that a Poodle won. I am happy for all of the winners. Next year…it will be another dog. Maybe it will be Daniel’s turn.

  33. It's a dry heave says:

All bow to Queen Siba, The Diana Ross of Poodles!!!

  34. Seeker542 says:

Nutty pug person here, and I don’t understand hating on certain dog breeds…except I’ve never met a Pomeranian I liked. All dogs are good boys and girls. On the occasion there’s a faulty personality trait, it’s usually due to poor conditioning.

  35. Minorbird says:

    Siba for President!!!! LOL

  36. NΞΞNΔ ZΞΞ says:

Different topic and a day late… but can someone please tell me why Pete Davidson is a thing? Every time I see a story about him I wonder what I’m missing. And what’s the deal with SNL, he’s hardly in any sketches and the few that he’s in he can’t deliver the lines without making a mistake or cracking up. He must be a great writer?

  37. Debra Horn says:

I consider myself the luckiest person on the planet. I have three Standard Poodles, and they are the most loving, most beautiful dogs. They have long tails…but are clipped pretty short everywhere else. I just love Poodles. But I could love a “Daniel”, too.
