Historically, when the Daily Mail makes up a “unnamed friend” of the Duchess of Sussex, that “friend” is usually just a mouthpiece for whatever agenda the Mail is pushing that week. So it is with the Mail’s latest “exclusive,” which is a lengthy set of quotes from a friend who has a surprising amount to say about the Duchess of Cambridge’s Tatler interview and Kensington Palace’s asinine response to the very idea of Kate NOT being embiggened 24-7. Meghan is mad because Kensington Palace defends Kate more than they ever stepped up for her: ‘Meghan said Kensington Palace never once came to her defense when she was being shredded by the media. Now Kate gets a bit of negative press, and the Palace comes out in less than 24 hours to rebuke the claims made against her. This is really a slap in the face for Harry because he repeatedly asked for an updated, revised media policy or at least a conversation about his concerns. All fell on deaf ears and then Kate comes along, snaps her fingers and gets an outpouring of support.’
This is why the Sussexes left: ‘Meghan says it’s just so telling. She explained this was one of the main reasons why she and Harry said their goodbyes to royal life… the lack of support and complete disregard for the pain and anguish Meghan suffered while being crucified by the media. Meghan said rather than backing her, she was made to feel like she was asking too much, expecting too much, when all she wanted was support from the powers that be.’
Kate was never supportive to Meghan: ‘Meghan said on her last trip to England, Kate barely said two words to her and that it’s absolutely preposterous for her to start playing the blame game. Of all the people in the royal family, Meghan said she had hoped to develop a close relationship with Kate, but was never given the chance. It was hurtful and disappointing for Meghan. Meghan said Kate never gave her the benefit of the doubt or reached out to her when she was at her lowest, struggling to adjust with very few friends. Had the roles been reversed, Meghan said she would have gone out of her way to make Kate feel part of the family. She would have embraced their sisterhood.’
Kate only has herself to blame: The friends said Meghan felt Kate ‘secretly envied Meghan’s ability to speak her mind and make her own happiness a priority. Meghan said Kate only has herself to blame for not setting limits and for not speaking up for herself.’
The wedding-tights drama: ‘First off, it was Meghan’s big day, not Kate’s and secondly Meghan was not about to make her god-kids, let alone the other little girls wear tights, it was too hot and sticky and there was just no need for it. Meghan said it really wasn’t an issue until Kate made it an issue.’
Do I believe that an actual friend of Meghan, part of her inner circle, really spoke to the Daily Mail? Not really. But I applaud the Mail for getting the tone right – this IS how Meghan probably feels, in my opinion. Just like the juxtaposition between “how Prince Andrew was treated” versus “how the Sussexes were treated” was on display constantly over the last year, it’s downright hilarious to see the Cambridges’ tone-deaf response to Tatler’s bitchy-posh piece, versus their lack of response to the mountain of smears and racist abuse Meghan suffered through 2018 and 2019. And no, the Palace barely did anything. You know why? Because half of those smears were being run through Kensington Palace’s communications office. Guess who ordered them?

I think this is exactly it. They started treating Kate with kid gloves when they could abuse Meghan and use their exultation of Kate against Meghan, but now that Meghan isn’t providing them much content, they have to go to Plan B.
The british tabloid media is a beast that needs to be fed constantly. Meghan and Harry removed themselves and now it’s harder for tabs to connect any dots to them for every story like they used to. William and Kate are the most obvious marks considering they command so much public attention. They can’t keep churning out positive stories forever.
By stating plainly that they are done with any collaboration with the tabloids, meghan and harry have slowly and effectively gotten out of that toxic cycle the royals can’t/won’t give up.
Their statement declaring that they would no longer engage the tabloids, not even for simple confirmation of denial of stories, looks more and more brilliant everyday.
My guess is the Tatler article and the responses to it got a LOT of attention, probably more attention/clicks than the standard “will and kate are the future! they’re perfect!” articles the DM et al was running for the past two years – so the press will pivot accordingly.

I think the Middletons were flexing a bit too much after Sussexit and it was annoying too many people who care about these things. They were probably envisioning seeing Carol and Pippa swanning about the palace thinking they are kingmakers and it pissed someone off. Also, James Middleton got such an epic drag today. My god, there is a lot of anger toward that family on both sides. Pissing off both the monarchists and the squad. In the old days when royal brides married in as consorts, they basically has to renounce and forget their birth family to show allegiance to their new sovereign. Also, royal brides have always been pawns, props, and scapegoats. Meghan learned this real quick and decided it made no sense, especially given Harry’s place in line. I did note that after a couple of weeks of PM being silent about the Sussexes, as soon as his contract with GMB was renewed he came out with a nasty piece about how irrelevant the Sussexes are. Connected?

Every once in a while the media holds the Cambridge’s shit over a balcony and threatens to drop it. The Cambridge’s call their bluff, so they drop just one thing, just to show they will do it.
I’ll expect maybe a pic of their kids, or a hit piece on Meghan or some other story will be provided to keep them fed. I think the Cambridge’s will be held hostage for life, but how much have they got left to give, money will run out, leaks will run dry, pics of their kids will get boring.
We all know none of meghans friends spoke to them, but what they said seems pretty accurate, so maybe the media are shifting the blame onto the palace. They did that after Diana’s death to stop people being angry at them.

That’s the hilarious part. They are mentioning the abusive treatment Meghan has suffered from but don’t even acknowledge that they played a HUGE role in it. In fact, the DM were the absolute worst.
OH they are DEFINITELY changing their tone in the wake of the resurgence of protests for Black Lives Matter. As soon as the media moves on though, my guess is they’ll be back to shredding her to pieces. They realize it would not be smart to go after Meghan too much right now. Especially now that a resurfaced video from 2012 that Meghan made for a campaign called Erase the Hate is making the rounds, in which Meghan describes being biracial and an incident where her mom was called the N word. I’m not sure it’s enough to change the DM’s tone forever but I think they realized they’re playing with fire if they try to take her down.

I still don’t understand either side (other than it obviously being Meghan’s choice on tights or no tights – it was HER wedding) of the tights thing. Is it THAT hot in May in the UK? I feel like the temperature isn’t that different from NS at that time of the year, but I could just be wrong. BUT – I wholeheartedly agree that the decision should be up to Meghan either way – I just always thought the argument for it being too warm was strange when she shouldn’t even HAVE to justify it in the first place. The tights debacle was definitely about control and putting meghan in her place. it’s like what you said, drama over tights is just the dumbest thing, but they definitely felt threatened by her.
It actually was pretty warm in the UK on the day of Meghan’s wedding (at least in Windsor) – someone here last week said they were there that day and it was hot, and I have a friend who was there (in the same hotel as Meghan lol) and she was posting that day about how warm it was – gorgeous, but warm.
My guess is the tights were a last minute decision – they were probably waiting to see what the weather did – and Kate tried to make an issue about it just because.
I think that’s the most likely scenario. The tights were a ‘maybe’ at best, and because of the weather it was like ‘meh, lets not bother’ because May is one of those months that can easily go either way. We had an outlier day this week where we had a freaking windchill making it feel like 5C/41F. It’s JUNE. And I was freezing taking the dog out. A day like that would have benefited from an extra layer of warmth, I’m sure.
There was months of hot weather that Spring/Summer that began in April and ran until August
I arrived in England and spent my first night in Windsor about 2 weeks before the wedding. I swear, it was high 80s. I certainly wasn’t expecting that and I was a sweaty mess and scrambling to find lighter clothing before doing the Great Walk in the park.
It was a warm day, but shortly before there had been a mini heatwave and there were articles speculating that it might get really hot, so tights probably would have felt hot to the kids and there was reason to believe that it could get really hot though in the end it was warm but not too hot. And yeah usually it doesn’t get hot in may but we don’t live in normal temperature days anymore due to climate warming.
It can be really hot in May, and it was at the time of the wedding. If I remember correctly, some people had heat strokes, while waiting for the carriage ride.
I’m not sure why you think this article makes Meghan look hypocritical. Daily Fail “Meghan” was referring to Kate supposedly whining about feeling “trapped” and “overworked” in the Tatler article. *eyeroll*. She’s saying Kate should speak up for herself if she so unhappy. Fake Meghan in the article is saying KP should have gone to bat for Meghan with the media like they did for Kate. Maybe if they did then the Sussexes wouldn’t have left. However, since we know the KP agenda was to get them to leave that was not going to happen.
Heat or not, tights are quite uncomfortable for kids that small. I absolutely hated them at that age when forced to wear them. And rarely did they go without getting a huge hole or run in them just from being an squirmy little kid.

Twofold reason for the sudden change in tone: They are testing the waters. They read some comments elsewhere, wrote their fanfiction, and now will be waiting to see if it generates interest.
Second, they are reading the room. Cambridges do not have the numbers to back up their narrative and people are noticing it. If Tatler not only notices but makes fun of them, DM is also allowed to take of the baby gloves and start roasting them. It is also more content: run some negative pieces, receive their rebuttals, have their mouthpieces speak- it generates clicks.
Maybe- just maybe- they are paving the way for a truce? The lawsuit might not go their way and now that Cambridges are sending the lawyers with more frequency, they want things to go back to normal- or else.

Well, if it is about clicks…I was shocked to see that it had about 10,000 comments yesterday evening. Bots or not, there was a lot of “interest” in the article!

I mean, it does make sense. Charles knows his sons. He has to defer to his Mother for reasons, and the way she deals with such things is by bribing William into doing more, but Charles knows. His bio silently tried to place William into his place by leaking he was ” grand. and Charles has surviving this narrative of ” King William and Power Behind the Throne Carole” for a long time. Now it got to a point where tevery second day there was a hagiography on William leaking and Charles was just working and then sick and then working again.
So, yes, I think Charles style does not directly go into conflict with William. Did he not leake to the Press he was not seeing enough of his grandkids? Maybe the endgame for Charles is intoduce some sort of truce to Meghan and Harry and quietly negotiate with them as William image disintegrate. I live in the UK and the way that the BM have done a 360 on ‘race debates’ is just wow! I do not believe for a second that they actually have had a change of heart – this is all down to business and spewing hate is not financial rewarding in the current climate. There were so many RRs including Dan Wootton himself commenting on how the Sussexes may be ‘sad’ and ‘lost’ being away from the UK and the Royals. One of the RRs actually gave them 9 months to come back. And he said ‘if they don’t come together, he (Harry) will definitely come back (by himself).
Once their one year review is up and Harry hasn’t magically returned without his baby and wife… that’s when things are going to get really interesting…
I think they stopped with that one year review in the press because when Harry and Meghan released that statement about barring those four tabloids for life, that means that if they moved back to England and were near those courtiers and relatives, all their business would be leaked. That media know they aren’t coming back. I think they’re hoping to butter them up in that time with somewhat timid coverage or hoping the royal can convince them somehow.
The British Media is simultaneously trying to look down their noses at the USA for our racism, while *also* whitewashing their own racism, including towards Meghan, Sterling, Stormzy and the other people and issues you noted.
I don’t know if any Americans are buying it (since we in the USA are *quite aware* of British Colonialism and what it meant, not just here but worldwide, for a start wrt native populations, particularly in Africa), but I see a lot of Brits on twitter buying into the narrative, and still defending the same racist microaggressive things that have been said and done to all those same people as not being racist.

I can’t help but think what a wonderful symbol it would have been, had Meghan been accepted in the family. Had they stood together as a united front. The royal family could have been something to look up to. A Meghan Kate partnership could have ushered in a new era. Imagine if they had been able, now, to have discussions about racial inequality. If they had pushed back on the “there can only be one princess” narrative and stood up for women. They would have been able to carve a new path together. I think the royals especially the Cambridge’s would rather alter the press narrative that read the room. I agree with everything you said. For the Cambridge’s it’s easier to get the press to write over the top gushing articles, and they manipulate and manufacture the comments section to favour them. That’s the problem, a majority of their popularity is manufactured by bot and doesn’t really exist. And of those who are fans, they are pretty much racists and old ladies. On twitter I see about 90% of the comments in favour of Meghan. Even Cambridge’s stans know they are behind the smears, they just hate Meghan so much they welcome it. Eventually that hate will fade one day, but the memory of what they did won’t. The royal family can cover up today’s news but they can’t change history. Meghans treatment will forever been remembered as segregation. All history will remember is how a biracial woman joined the royal family and made her life a living hell. The minor details which the press picked on her for such as nail polish, avacardos, etc will look silly in time.
They thought that the more they excluded Meghan, the better they will look. Meghan is on the right side of history, William and Kate will be remembered as the villains here.
Firstly, you actually have to know that you need to read the room. Karen & Kevin, think they don’t have to do all that because they’re above every one else. Karen may have got her man and her crown, but her petty little mind has never been intelligent enough to grasp any of these concepts and how vital being on the right side of history will make the future for her and her children more secure. She doesn’t think that way and never will. Her ‘slip is showing’ as they say, and people may choose to forgive, but I for one will never forget.
Meghan and Harry have had literally 95% negative news coverage over the last 3 years and yet somehow the ‘Sussex’s squad’ was formed. The Cambridge’s have had literally 99.99% positive news coverage of the last 3 years and somehow managed to lose half their fan base as a result. I think the Cambridge’s are baffled how the Sussex squad is so strong and yet they still push the same news stories because they seem to think it actually works. They know we know what they are and that all the negative Sussex coverage comes from them, and they still proceed. The only thing I can think of is that they are trying to survive day to day and have not thought about the future or their legacy.

@Lanne – I agree, I have also been thinking the reason that potentially Kate resisted bonding with Meghan is because she so craves to be accepted by the Toffs. I feel the same. A lot of journalists and publications are suddenly shaking in their boots. This article is proof that something is up–why the sudden change in tone towards Meghan? Why are they suddenly taking up for her? They’re all petrified about what is going to be said in that book.
I think the British Tabloid Royal Reporters have seen researched and sourced excerpts from both the Scobie book and the Lady Colin Campbell book are actively course correcting themselves with as much haste as the can muster.
They were shook about the book before. But now, in this climate with massive Black Lives Matter protests and many white people finally admitting that systemic racism is real and something needs to be done about it, the British media and the royals have already lost the fight. Because when that book drips, they were ready to gaslight, accuse Meghan of “playing the race card”, accuse Harry of “virtue signalling wokeness” and basically being a race traitor, etc. That is what they were going to do. And now, in this racial climate, all of that has been taken from them. The world will FIRMLY be in the side of Meghan and Harry. I think they will divorce or at least separate sooner rather than later. There are a number of reasons: a. William is bored and has one foot out of the door already. b. Charles hates the Middletons and I think he feels they are behind the “let’s skip over Charles and make Will king” movement. I still feel he had a hand in the Tatler mess. Plus the author Pasternak has said she now feels that Charles and Camilla make a good match and belong together. c. The aristos are lined up firmly against Kate and her family. Looks like the writing is on the wall for Kate, it’s just a question of will she go quietly or not. The armies are lining up for battle.
I think it’s already failed and they’re just going through the motions. There’s this thing called “psychological projection” in which the ego defends itself against negative impulses or qualities by denying their existence in themselves while attributing them to others. I think this is what the Cambridges have been doing all along with the Sussexes – projecting their own failures, insecurities, empty marriage, etc. onto Harry and Meghan. The Sussexes totally eclipsed them work-wise and have a deliriously happy marriage. This exposed the chinks in Kate and William’s carefully contrived armour – their laziness, racism, one-upmanship, petty jealousy, and their complicity with the BM/KP/ROTA in suggesting Harry was weak and struggling while Meghan was a controlling b*tch. Well they kinda shot themselves in both feet didn’t they and the tide of public opinion seems to be changed pretty dramatically.

A lot of the things directed at Meghan and Harry have always been projection wrt Kate and William – individually and relationship wise, yes. I mean, the narrative about Meghan being the ultimate social climber, the idea that she would push for Archie to have a title, even the idea that she was ever jealous of Kate. That was just projection wrt thing about Kate herself regarding herself – the obsession with status and titles, jealousy competing with other women, particularly Meghan at the time.
And we all know Will has been jealous of Harry for many things, dating back even to when they were kids.
The Tatler article also gives divorce fodder of ‘Carole took advantage of vulnerable young William, he was manipulated into marrying Kate’.
