Prince Harry wanted a wreath laid at the Cenotaph in his name but the palace refused

Britain's Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex attend the 91st Field of Remembrance at Westminster Abbey in London, Thursday, Nov. 7, 2019.

Yesterday was Remembrance Sunday in the UK, with several socially-distant events around the UK to honor the end of World War I. The Windsors always dress in black, lay a wreath at the Cenotaph and watch a military parade. Some of the royals – the ones who served, usually – take part in the parade, and almost all of them are involved with the wreath-laying. Apparently, Prince Harry asked Buckingham Palace if he could have a wreath laid at the Cenotaph for Remembrance Sunday, especially considering that he’s the only royal figure in the past thirty years to serve in a war. The palace refused.

The Duke of Sussex was refused permission for a wreath to be laid at the Cenotaph on his behalf today, in the latest sign of the growing gulf between him and the royal family. Prince Harry, who stepped down from royal duties in March, made the personal request to Buckingham Palace, but was denied by courtiers on the grounds that he is no longer representing the monarchy. He first laid a wreath at the Cenotaph in 2009 at the age of 25. The Queen was not made aware of her grandson’s wish.

Harry is understood to be deeply saddened by the decision, the clearest sign yet that his official links to the royal family are permanently severed. His decade of military service, which he once described as “one of the best professions you can ever be involved with”, transformed his image from that of a playboy prince. He became a campaigner for veterans’ causes, including the Invictus Games, the sporting event for wounded and ill service personnel.

The duke gave up his military posts after relocating to California with the Duchess of Sussex, including his role as Captain General of the Royal Marines. But a year-long “review period” agreed with the Queen, the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Cambridge aimed to leave the door open for Harry to resume some of his military links, an option that now seems unlikely.

In a recording for the Declassified podcast which will air today, Harry, 36, said: “Remembrance Day for me is a moment for respect and for hope. I wear it [the poppy] to celebrate the bravery and determination of all our veterans. These are the people and moments I remember when I salute, when I stand at attention and when I lay a wreath at the Cenotaph.”

Harry is not the only royal to be absent from today’s service. The Duke of York will also not attend.

[From The Times]

“The Queen was not made aware of her grandson’s wish.” I don’t believe it. I’m calling bullsh-t on that. I think the Queen was informed and she’s such a petty, tone-deaf a–hole, she made the call to refuse Harry this one request. And I think the courtiers knew exactly how bad it looks, so they’re falling on their swords for the Petty Queen. I also think that the British media will likely continue their unhinged narrative about how Harry “abandoned” them and “abandoned” the military, even though it’s 100% clear that he’s been pushed out of all of his military honors and titles. They wouldn’t even let him pay his respects on Remembrance Day. It’s beyond petty.

Also: The Sussexes went to LA National Cemetery yesterday, Remembrance Sunday.

Her Royal Pettiness believes being petty will teach Harry a lesson and bring him running back with his tail between his legs. But it’s showing Harry and the rest of the world that they made the right choice and how truly dysfunctional the BRF is.

    • Elizabeth Regina says:

Not only dysfunctional but also not very smart. Now is the time for the UK to make amends with the Sussexes seeing as they are friends with the Bidens and Kamala Harris. They could so provide the soft touch in trade negotiations the UK needs right now. But no. The House of Petty only exudes pettiness.

    • Merricat says:

To think there was a time when people revered the monarchy as a bastion of honor and nobility. SMH This is possibly the coldest, most petty thing the Queen has ever done, and everyone can see it. We’ll keep Harry, he’s the best person to come out of that gene pool; the rest can sink into their self-made maelstrom of colonial entitlement. The world is changing.

    • AnnaKist says:

What a bunch of petty arses. And now, the world can see what a pack of twunts make up The Firm. Honestly, you’d get more respect and consideration from the Corleone family.

    • Mrs.Krabapple says:

Why on earth would the royal family do such a despicable thing? Don’t they know the wreath is to honor the dead, NOT a way to self-congratulate *themselves*?! Actually, I think I just answered my own question. The dead don’t matter, only how their memory can be used/manipulated to embiggen the royal family in the eyes of the public. My opinion of the royal family cannot get any lower now.

    • I think it was the Guardian that mentioned the wreath (costing around $1300) was noticed to have been thrown on a pile of junk in a side building. Them royals haven’t got a clue. Harry’s already made wreath laying in a pile of junk instead of being placed is a photo that will never happen, but a photo the royal family deserves. A photo showing how they really feel about the fallen. This is about honoring the fallen, not their petty-ass vendetta towards the Sussexes. I hope William goes incandescent with rage over the Sussexes doing their own way of showing honor.

      • Lorelei says:

Wait so he actually had a wreath made and ready and they THREW IT AWAY?! That is disgusting. That makes it so much worse, my god. I thought he made the request in advance and they said no (which is bad enough); I didn’t realize he actually had a wreath prepared. This family is absolute trash. This is one of the pettiest things they’ve ever done, and it only makes them look horrible and shows that Harry still very much honors the tradition.

      • blue36 says:

What the hell! That should be publicized all over to show how nasty the royal family is. Throwing out a wreath? Seriously?

  2. Snuffles says:

President Elect Biden and VP elect Harris both have a strong dislike of Boris Johnson. They are both against Brexit. The UK desperately needs the US for favorable trade deals.

When it comes to diplomacy and smoothing things over, that’s when the government usually trots out the Royal family to charm politicians.

Unfortunately, Queen Petty and Prince Cain spent the better part of 4 years abusing a beloved American citizen and the ONE Royal with genuine connections with the new administration.

It boggles the mind that they would continue to be so bitter and petty to their best asset in US-UK relations. This is why the monarchy is crumbling.

    • Elizabeth Regina says:

I agree. Their spite and jealousy can’t make them see beyond the end of their noses. Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face. I was heartened to see quite a number of people come out in support of the Sussexes, especially fellow veterans. Even Piss Moron got quite a good telling off from people.

    • TQ says:

And Joe Biden has made clear that if the UK’s Brexit terms violate provisions of the Good Friday Agreement, there will be no US-UK trade deal: (https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2020/nov/08/dominic-raab-joe-biden-no-deal-brexit)

I wouldn’t be surprised if Boris is trying to rush a deal with Trump in these last months of his term to avoid dealing with Biden.

And no surprise Petty Betty is up to her old tricks.

      • Snuffles says:

He might try but the Orange Menace will probably spend his final days mounting bogus legal challenges and conducting rallies to boost his ego.

      • Ines says:

You’re giving Boris too much credit, that would be a smart move. The man is a clown.

      • L4frimaire says:

Congress has to approve trade deals so nothing will happen in the waning days of the Trump administration. The royal family didn’t have to comment at all on this day but they chose to throw gasoline on that fire, do that nasty non- gesture and run to the press about it. They decide that had to make a point. This along with the racist guy in the House of Lords disrespecting Harris shows that the UK has no interest in a good working relationship with the new administration.

    • windyriver says:

The irony is, after more than three years of the RF, the media, and the British establishment in general smearing, demeaning, and failing to support Meghan, a WOC, and ultimately allowing M&H to be more or less hounded out the country – the US has elected a WOC to the second highest office in the land. And Britain will have to work with her. I believe karma has come calling.

      • MF1 says:

Yep! And you better believe Kamala made note of how the BRF and British media treated the biracial woman who married in!

    • bluemoonhorse says:

It’s going to be funny as hell when M&H are invited to the WH and there isn’t a painting of slaves on the wall.

  3. Becks1 says:

So I do think the wording is confusing here (not you Kaiser, the actual story) – because of the term “on his behalf,” it makes it sound like he wanted a personal wreath laid. I think what he wanted was someone to lay the wreath that he would have laid had been there – like if in past years he laid a wreath on behalf of the Marines, I think he wanted someone to lay that wreath for him. The same has been done in the past for Prince Phillip when he stopped attending the event. At least, that’s what I “think” he was asking – its a narrow distinction but I think its there, so the twitter screams about how “no wreath is laid on behalf of a person” is missing the point.

Anyway – I think this makes the royal family look incredibly bad. SO BAD. I’m seeing lots of comments from outside royal twitter about how this is insulting for veterans, how petty and mean spirited the family looks, etc.

    • Nic919 says:

Lots of people that don’t post about royals at all are saying this looks incredibly mean and petty. Harry served and not the fake royal version either and he should have been respected for that alone. When you disrespect the actual veterans and reward those who play act with all their ribbons and medals you are no different than a tin pot dictatorship.

      • Digital Unicorn says:

Yep – it was all over UK twitter about how petty it was NOT to have his wreath laid esp as he is a veteran.

The Sussex’s PR move was great clap back and they ended up with egg on their faces. Am sure the US veterans would LOVE a royal patron.

    • ArtHistorian says:

The BRF and their advisors have clearly learnt absolutely NOTHING from their many past missteps.

      • I agree ArtHistorian. And the fact that the palace was actually the source of revealing that Harry asked and was denied shows how really F***edUp they are when it comes to PR. How did they think this would not come back to bite them? Did they think Harry would stay silent or do nothing? I think there are 4 areas you do not mess with Harry on: his child, his wife, his service to the military, and his passionate commitment to all vets, living and deceased.

    • RoyalBlue says:

That’s how I saw it too Becks. And it was AWFUL to refuse him such a simple request. It would have been an olive branch to lay the wreath and it would show the maturity of the courtiers. Now it really shows from which side the spite is coming.

    • Nikki* says:

Whoever made this decision is quite mean-spirited AND stupid. Really startlingly so.

      • Nic919 says:

It’s obvious none of the courtiers who decided this served themselves because they would have understood why this was important to Harry.

  4. lanne says:

I could see the courtiers making the decision themselves and not telling the Queen. I think those idiots are running the show, and it would have been more work for them to do had she said yes. Also, they likely feared it would distract from the Queen. But this goes to show that everything the royals do from this point forward will be shadowed by the Sussexes. Hope they’re ready for it.

    • Original Penguin says:

Well the pictures from the Cenotaph have been overshadowed by the H&M ones from California and no ones talking about Kate’s new coat.

Unfortunately I think the newspapers are missing the point of what is important- remembering the fallen and the vets, but instead focusing on this petty family.

      • ArtHistorian says:

It was such bad look! The epaulettes are especially cringe.

      • Elizabeth Regina says:

Yes we need to talk about that coat. Those tassels and buttons were just inappropriate. Some fashionista said she looked like a female villain in a low budget sci fi movie.

      • windyriver says:

On the subject of Kate’s clothes – there’s an interview with Charles in the new British Vogue talking among other things about the negative impact of “throw away fashion” on the environment, and discussing how he tries to keep his things as long as possible through care, mending, resoling shoes, etc. Apparently the morning coat he wore to H&M’s wedding dates from 1984.

Wonder what he really thinks about Kate’s ridiculous spending on new clothes.

      • Maevo says:

Yeah windyriver, I feel like it’s been a loooong time since we’ve actually seen a Kate rewear.

      • Bella DuPont says:

        @ Arthistorian

Had to look up the word ‘epaulette’ 😁

      • JaneH says:

Yes, this exposes their pettiness. Absolutely no reason to deny that request from Harry.

And Kate looks like a mean Mary Poppins for some dark Mary Poppins movie take where she’s the villain.

    • RoyalBlue says:

That’s what I have thought too. It’s the courtiers making ALL the decisions (with Charles’ approval). At 94 there is no way petty betty is making any major decision. I remember my granny at 94, and she died at 102, Even though her mind was as sharp as ever, her children took over running her life. The people around Petty B control her, so she can’t change her will, can’t read celebitchy and can’t call meghan to say hello.

  5. VS says:

They wanted to teach the Sussexes a lesson but the Sussexes ended up grabbing all the headlines that weren’t already grabbed by Joe/Kamala…………the RF has to be careful here; they can’t compete with H&M for headlines especially non-UK ones.

Anyway, good for H, he was able to pay his respect

    • VS says:

Also why does very single thing about this family, especially when they feel like they are hurting H&M, ends up in the press?
Baldy covid diagnostic was hidden but H remembrance ask ended up in the trashy tabloids? why?

      • Elizabeth Regina says:

Royal PR by the men in grey suits only has one playbook. Prop up the heir and bad mouth the spares. Sadly, times are a changing and that does not work anymore. They can’t even run a decent smear campaign as they forget to tidy up and hide receipts. People still have long memories with regards to what happened to Diana, so what they are up to is drawing parallels.

      • VS says:

It is so ineffective; H&M are gone…….in the US, we have other things at the moment to worry about but why not focus on those who are left? this is not helping them; do they realize that H&M are getting all the attention? people mention K’s coat; I didn’t even see it, the US newspapers who talked about it referenced H and the Queen. …….. this is dangerous for W; H is without knowing creating “another court”

  6. Noki says:

The courtiers are poisonous a**holes, however i read that the only Wreath that is laid for an actual individual is one for The Queen, the rest represent the other 4 branches of the British armed forces. So Harry not being there then why not give that honour to a member of the forces who was actually present.

    • Myra says:

Even if that is the case, I wonder if it was really necessary for them to run to the media to spill that they rejected his offer. It’s the pettiness behind the attempt to humiliate which bothers me the most with this story. It’s Remembrance Sunday and they couldn’t be dignified enough to keep this story in-house? Are there no lows to which they would not sink? And they’re not hurting Meghan by doing this, they are hurting Harry.

  7. Laalaa says:

Oh, wow. Harry lost some hair.
Another thing they will blame Meghan for

    • Snuffles says:

I don’t think so. The look of his hair thickness or lack thereof changes depending on the light and the angle of the picture.

    • MsDiMeanOur says:

there’s an article in the daily mail of Charles Spencer and some throwback pics

If only Unable didn’t loose his hair, he is a spitting image of their uncle Charles

Just added the totally irrelevant comment because of the hair. not that i am interested in Unable/PeniswithTeeth lol. #TeamSussex

      • (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

I noticed that too!! If PWT had his hair at this point, he’d look just like his Uncle Charles.

  8. PEARL GREY says:

If this story is true, the Institution continues to show to the world how petty, classless and cold they are. Harry is a veteran who actually served and unlike some, he doesn’t use it as an alibi to get out of owning up to heinous crimes *cough* Mr “I was shot at in the Falklands” No Sweat *cough*

Harry can commemorate Remembrance Day from anywhere in the world and his wife and fellow servicemen are behind him. He doesn’t need anything from game playing courtiers who still don’t realise they are fighting a one sided PR battle.

  9. Harper says:

I think they denied Harry so they could run to the press and say he asked and was denied. Harry can’t help himself for feeling deeply about the day but I hope he never asks them for anything again.

    • MsDiMeanOur says:

The biased one-sided article in the daily fail is so cringeworthy.

i am terrified to open the comments.

I still need to know why the Duke of York is an afterthought in this whole thing though?

      • Harper says:

The story was given to the Times, which is not a trashy tabloid. The Times comments were just as bad trashing Harry and Meghan although there were some supporters who thought the move by the palace was petty.

      • Bella DuPont says:

stop clicking on the daily fail stories. You support their agenda every time you do.

      • (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

Interesting how they put a wreath down for Pedo, who ISN’T a working member of the RF, but they deny Harry. What a F-up family!

      • Tessa says:

Those comments are truly scary. I am wondering who these people are that do this.

  10. Maevo says:

The way the Royal family has stripped Harry of his military positions and refusing to lay the wreath is just awful. It’s obviously a pointed strategy to punish him in a way they know will really hurt.

That said the H&M photo opp at the cemetery is a little cringey to me…I get what they were going for especially in light of the palace pettiness. I don’t know what would have worked better but it just feels a little over the top to me. It puts the focus on their palace feud and dueling PR instead of about the actual remembrance.

    • Nic919 says:

I suspect the photo was to show that Harry hasn’t forgotten about Remembrance Sunday despite being overseas and knowing the petty refusal about the wreath the photo was to counter the narrative that Harry has abandoned veterans. It’s not the first photo he’s had taken while at a military cemetery (there is one of him at Arlington a few years back) and it’s not like he posted photos going grocery shopping. Remembrance Sunday is the most important day of the year in the UK for veterans to remember their sacrifice and Harry wanted to memorialize that.

      • Becks1 says:

I agree @Nic. I think the photos were to counter the narrative that Harry has abandoned veterans by not returning to the UK for Remembrance Sunday – he’s showing he honors and remembers them no matter what country. I’m sure the tabloids all had articles ready to go about how Harry no longer cares about the military community that they had to scrap after those LA pictures came out.

    • Boy says:

The photo OP is for a very specific audience – the military community in the UK. It’s not for royal watchers. He is demonstrating his solidarity when his family has denied him the opportunity. I bet Meghan organized it knowing how much BP’s denial must have hurt him

      • CC says:

Yes, there’s something about this that makes me think this is Meghan’s idea once Harry got the reply from the courtiers. We also know that she picked the flowers.

        They’re a really sweet couple.

    • Lizzie says:

I thought it was the perfect gesture of respect. As I said below I found Kate’s bespoke dress up to be cringe bordering on disrespectful.

    • Amy Bee says:

The press, encouraged by the Royal Family, is on a campaign to discredit Harry in the eyes of the military. Harry has been forced to take legal action against newspapers that have said he abandoned the military and banning him from the Remembrance Day service was another attempt to damage his reputation with the military. Taking pictures may have been cringing to you but there is a bigger issue behind this whole event. Harry has to demonstrably show that he still supports the military because of what the Royal Family has been doing to Harry since he left in March. Taking pictures at the LA National Ceremony was the right thing to do. The day before pictures were released by the Queen of her putting flowers on the grave of the Unknown soldier at Westminster Abbey, I’m sure you didn’t find that cringing. The Royal Family uses the military at every chance it gets to bolster its public image but this whole event has shown that they do not really care about the people who serve. What is cringing is seeing the likes of Charles, William and Edward with in uniforms and medals when none of them have seen active combat and never lived the lives of real soldiers.

      • Maevo says:

Yeah the fact that these members of the family who haven’t actually served get to be the face of this is just so shameful.

      • Merricat says:

        100%

      • Kyliegirl says:

Totally agree with Amy Bee. The BRF and the BM have decided that the one way to really hurt Harry and his popularity is to tarnish his image with the military. This is truly despicable. Members of the military have made enough sacrifices. They should not be used in this way. Harry’s service and support of the military, especially through Invictus, Walking with the Wounded just to name a few, is of the upmost important to him AND to the service members. BRF is treading into dangerous waters dragging Harry’s service. If they don’t recognize him, what message is this sending to other military veterans who are no longer serving, that their service and sacrifice doesn’t matter or the respect is conditional?

    • Flamingo says:

I agree about the photo shoot being kind of cringey. I get what they were going for, but I’m not sure if it hit the mark for anyone outside of their fans. It might have worked better if they were at a socially distanced event with other people, not just the two of them having their photo op in a cemetery.

      • Merricat says:

Are you a member of the military, or part of a military family? Because to those who are, it is not “cringey.”

      • Maevo says:

I agree Flamingo! I think if they had been with other people it would have worked better for me – less focus on the two of them, more focus on the day itself.

      • notasugarhere says:

I see tumblr is here early today.

      • Merricat says:

        Lol, nota

      • BnLurkN4eva says:

This was a perfect way to demonstrate his support of his fellow soldiers who served and persons who have served their country everywhere. The point of the day is rememberance, he was remembering with his family, Meghan nothing cringe worthy about that. Did you also thought the Queen placing a flower was cringy?

      • ABritGuest says:

Flamingo Is Remembrance Sunday an event in the US though? I know Veterans Day is. But think point for Harry was to do a commemoration in tandem with U.K. Remembrance Sunday. if there were people at the gravesite in LA on the Sunday I presume it might have been people visiting relative graves rather than than a community commemoration in which case they might not have wanted to be included in group photos

      • windyriver says:

I think just the opposite; had there been more people there, it would have seemed much more like a PR event.

Remembrance Day is not marked in the US, so the kinds of routine gatherings we’re likely to see for Veterans’ Day on Wednesday don’t occur. H&M would have had to gather people themselves, which IMO would definitely seem like direct and unnecessary competition with the RF. It would also detract from what I think is Harry’s message, of respect and solidarity, wherever he may be, to and for the veterans and military forces related to his country of birth.

      • Becks1 says:

We don’t mark Remembrance Sunday in the US but we do mark November 11 – we call it Veterans Day, and I think technically its supposed to focus more on the veterans, not those who died (that’s supposed to be Memorial Day in May). But I think many Veterans Day ceremonies do focus on the fallen soldiers. I’m not from a military family though so feel free to correct me other CBers if I’m wrong.

      • jOoLz says:

the US does do a Remembrance Day. we call it Memorial Day and it’s the last Monday in May.

i thought it was touching that they found the graves of commonwealth soldiers and left flowers from their garden.

      • Isabella says:

A group of people? In the middle of a pandemic? Talk about a bad look.

      • mrsBump says:

        @Flamingo,

Agreed. Buckingham Palace refusing that a wreath be placed for Harry was petty and for the first time, i saw real genuine sympathy for Harry, very few snarky remarks. Most people thought that it was overkill from the Palace. Honestly to me, it signaled that they did the right thing by moving away. The firm sure knows how to hold a grudge.
And then the pictures of their private ceremony was published and you could see the British sentiment changing in real time.
The graveyard photoshoot complete with Vogue photographer missed the mark and they are now having to deny that it was a PR move.
Honestly, if they did have to publish pictures, why not a picture taken by Meghan of Harry laying down the wreath. Why magazine worthy pictures ?
I feel like H&M hearts are consistently in the right place but they try too hard.

      • equality says:

Because they can’t win no matter what they do, somebody would have complained about being in a crowd during a pandemic. And if Meghan had taken pictures as @Mrs Bump suggested, there would have been critiques of her photography not being up to Kate’s skill level. The photos were published for the same reason the royals publish photos of their activities: to show support to the veterans.

    • GuestWho says:

Earlier in the day, there were plenty of twits tweeting about how disrespectful it was that Harry hadn’t done anything to show solidarity on RD. I suppose they don’t understand time zones. Later in the day, many of those same people were slamming him for showing solidarity on RD. Nobody complained about the photos of him doing the same thing in Arlington a few years ago when he was in the US on RD. Nobody complains about the random cematary photos of Cain and Unable over the years. So what is the difference here?

Paying respect to veterans has always been important to Harry. It is another thing the RF is trying to take away from him. If he has to send out photos of himself honoring the fallen to counteract his family’s new narrative that he has deserted the military, then good for him for doing it.

What is truly cringy is his family punishing him for moving out of his grandmother’s house to protect his wife from their machinations, and then doing their military cosplay while disrespecting an actual front-line veteran.

    • Sushiroll says:

      @All you cringers:
He had to do this for reasons that you don’t seem to understand; the most important being that he chose to honor the fallen in his own personally meaningful way. He has that choice, you know, even if his petty family thought they could take it away.

He is also a public figure. Such people are required to visibly and regularly demonstrate support for the causes they care about. He did this straight from the heart, and it shows on his face.

So kindly take your cringes and yeet them into a volcano. He did a noble and sincere thing.

  11. Ginger says:

This story REALLY angered me. A lot of people were saying that because he wasn’t a “working” royal he couldn’t have a wreath laid for him. Who cares? He is the only royal in that family that has actually served two tours and was on the front lines. Edward quit training after 4 months because it was too hard and look at all the ridiculous medals and honors he has. The RF are so cold.

I’m glad Harry got to lay his wreath. Of course the UK journalists that are not veterans, we’re upset that Harry did this and took pictures.

    • Elizabeth Regina says:

You know the old saying, the hatred and racism comes first and the excuses and justifications come later. Regardless it was a very bad look for the House of Windsor. Their PR people once again score an own goal.

  12. aquarius64 says:

    Petty move by House Windsor.

  13. Oh says:

I hope he never ever attends trooping the colour…my heart can’t see him wearing a civilian suit and he served 10 years in the army … at the same time the racists family members wearing their fake medals and uniforms .. a bunch of clowns

    • Ainsley7 says:

Harry would be in uniform. He just wouldn’t be allowed to wear any of the uniforms from the honorary positions he used to hold. Which he never wore anyway.

      • Oh says:

And even if he would wear a uniform, I hope he never attends that circus, that evil “firm”doesn’t deserve him. They try hard to destroy his life

  14. ABritGuest says:

Yeah it seems like the £1000 wreath for I guess his suspended military association was already made & he was asking someone to lay it on his behalf and that was refused.

At first I was side eyeing the Sussexes for releasing pictures of them marking Remembrance Sunday in Cali but then I saw usual British critics slamming Harry’s absence from the UK’s commemoration day events& they probably would have gone crazy if Sussexes hadn’t said they had marked Remembrance Sunday.

Plus saw other photos where royals have visited soldiers graves for private visits to pay respects with photographers in attendance incl the Queen last week where she wore a mask. Sussexes would have been criticised if there wasn’t ‘proof’ of Harry paying respect & more ‘Harry’s turned his back on his soldiers’ stories would have followed so no winning. It’s so sad that even a sombre occasion doesn’t stop all the pettiness & sniping

    • equality says:

They spend that much on wreaths that are just going to fade and be tossed? Think how much they could do for living veterans with that money and what they spend on clothing, security, etc. for this event.

      • notasugarhere says:

Are you complaining about all royals spending that kind of money with UK florists who are in a bad spot right now?

      • notasugarhere says:

Also, AFAIK they are made by the Royal British Legion.

      • Lady D says:

They might be in a bad spot right now nota, but there have been years and years of this kind of wasteful spending. Tons of money that could be spent on ex-military members and their programs. Meghan created their wreath with flowers from their garden, no where near $1000, which for the record is a bizarre amount of money for a wreath.
Do the queen, Charles, William etc, pay the 1K for the wreath or are the taxpayers on the hook for that too?

      • notasugarhere says:

I doubt it comes out of their personal pockets, but rather out of the taxpayers. Question is, are more veterans moved by the wreaths and ceremony vs. what could be done with the money? We’re talking 10,000 in funds tops. When balanced out, which means more?

      • TeamAwesome says:

The wreath was made at the Royal British Legion’s factory that employs former service members, with an emphasis on hiring disabled veterans. I would imagine that this makes it practically a charitable donation.

  15. tee says:

I think having their own wreath laying event, after being denied by the RF, is yet another display of their BDE — and I love it. The courtiers continue to underestimate the Sussexes at their own peril.

  16. Sofia says:

This was just petty and ridiculous. Even if “tradition” said non-working royals can’t lay a wreath, was it really too much effort for somebody to go put one down privately or just say “hey Harry’s the son of the heir. Perhaps we could make some room”. I saw a few tweets by vets saying this was not a good idea. Hence why the palaces are saying Liz didn’t know – to protect her from the backlash

    • Maevo says:

The hills these people (the royals) will die on about “tradition” are just baffling. So out of touch. I wonder what Charles will do differently, if anything, as King.

    • Lady D says:

Where are these reports that the courtiers made the decision, not Liz, Sofia? I can’t find denial stories anywhere and I thought they would be everywhere.

      • Becks1 says:

It’s just been a line in a lot of the stories about this – that the Queen was not made aware of Harry’s request.

    • SomeChick says:

“Liz didn’t know” is just as bad… she’s supposed to be The Queen, running the show. And now “courtiers” are actually making the decision? If it’s not true, she’s being incredibly petty. If it is true, that looks even worse.

  17. SJ Knows says:

Harry is a Veteran, he served his country.
For him to show respect for those who lost their lives in service is a fine thing.
Whoever called this BS of blocking his gesture, has made a poor PR decision.
And as a family member Liz is just full of control issues, isn’t she? Jaysus.

Good for H&M for doing a local veterans observance.

  18. TeamAwesome says:

This makes me so sad. Just because he stopped officially working for the family business doesn’t mean he stopped being a member of the family. Its something that clearly means a lot to him, and a family that actually cared about him would want to do this for him. But if the upside is nobody paying attention to Button’s new shoulder fringe then so be it.

    • lanne says:

It goes to show that no matter what they say, the truth is that they are the Firm first and a family second. That’s what makes them so dysfunctional.

  19. S808 says:

Them denying his request was really hurtful I’m sure. They’re also the same ones sowing seeds in the press to undermine his commitment to the veterans and make it easier to be replaced so I’m not surprised. I don’t blame him for asking but I wouldn’t ask again. I’m glad they released photos and I think it was the right move to show he’ll still mark the occasion no matter where he is since his commitment to the vets has been called into question more than once since stepping back. I’d also consider having a Remembrance Day event for commonwealth soldiers that are stateside if I were but who knows it may pull too much focus from the event in the Britain.

  20. FancyHat says:

They literally left an abandoned wreath behind that was for Harry and didn’t lay it because they are that petty.

And who is the media bitching about? Harry and Meghan for doing their own remembrance visit because it upstaged the royal family’s event.

    • Becks1 says:

Wait, a few people have mentioned this now. so there was a wreath ready to go and they didn’t lay it because it was for Harry?!??

      • windyriver says:

Saw something quoted from Newsweek saying “The Sun found Harry’s wreath lying unused in a branch of veterans’ charity the Royal British Legion”. Maybe someone else has more information if this is indeed accurate?

      • bluemoonhorse says:

        WOW. Just wow. Scum.

      • TheOriginalMia says:

Wow. I’m stunned speechless by the thoughtlessness of leaving his wreath out. This reeks of William. Needlessly cruel and short-sighted as usual.

  21. Amy Bee says:

There is no way that the Queen didn’t know about Harry’s request, if she didn’t then she should step down and let Charles be King. Too often it seems she unaware of what’s going on around her. It is clear that the Royal Family is using the military to punish Harry for leaving. They have been attempting to undermine Harry’s position with the military ever since he left. In their effort to embarrass Harry by leaking this story to the press they have only made themselves look bad.

    • S808 says:

I read that line and thought “Okay, so what DOES she know?” cause I’ve seen this line far too often for someone who’s supposed to be queen and matriarch. I know they do it so she won’t be questioned but it just invites a whole new set of questions imo. Also, by trying to shield her, they know denying Harry was a bad move.

    • Lizzie says:

Bill was probably involved in the decision and he has had enough bad press lately.

    • Tessa says:

Where is Charles in all of this? I did read in the Lacey book that Will would go for Heart to Hearts with HM. Charles should be helping Harry.

  22. Lizzie says:

I found the photos of Harry and Meghan very sweet. This quiet gesture reminds me of how he remembered his mother on her birthday. It is certainly more meaningful than showing up in another bespoke Alexander McQueen faux military button coat. That was actually insulting to the vets.
I am shocked at how the palace and rf have disrespected their veterans. I do not believe the rf want Harry to return, I think these outlandish decisions are to warn any others against fleeing. Anyone else close to the crown eyeing the good life H&M have created?

  23. smee says:

    Who leaked the story?

    • BnLurkN4eva says:

The palace of course as always. They always think these things will make the others look bad and they have the tabloids to create that narrative, but they always end up looking out of touch and petty.

  24. Sid says:

Denying the laying of the already purchased wreath was nasty enough, but then they leaked the story to the press? The BRF and their courtiers are truly something else.

  25. Mina_Esq says:

They are emotionally abusing Harry. There is no reason why they couldn’t have laid a wreath in his name. He is still the son of the next in line. He has served in a war and has lost friends. This would have been a nice gesture if they had done it.

  26. Case says:

I find this to be such shameful and cruel behavior from the RF. Harry is a veteran and a member of their family. Denying this simple, sweet request tells us everything we need to know about them.

  27. Jen says:

Why does this make me so angry?!

  28. anonymous says:

Racism is often two faced. The benign, tolerent one in public and the malevolent bitter one in private. We can figure out the true feelings of racists by their acts. The pettiness, the spite, the need to put its victim in its place and assert domination and superiority. The need to deny its victim any measure of credit. No matter how hard you try the victim will find its never good enough. The palace needs to be careful. We are seeing too many petty slights and misunderstandings toward this couple for this to be accidental.

  29. Carrie says:

Petty Betty? No. Bitchy Betty. That family is just trash. What has the queen done for ordinary Brits? As far as one can see she gets praised to the hilt just for living as long as she has. What has she actually done besides speeches and waving? Oh yeah of course she has been a spiteful bitch. What a legacy. Even her husband can’t stand to be around her.

  30. Scal says:

These people still have no media instincts.

You ‘let’ him put a small wreath and make a small mention of how Harry as a vet was included in recognizing vets. Would have been a small sidebar story and the RF would have come out looking great. Putting aside petty differences and uniting to recognize the service of citizens. Would have been a blip of a story.

Instead you have them trying to flex because reasons, and H&M going to a cemetary locally becomes a bigger story and no one pays attention to the queens big moment.

As everyone says-tone deaf and petty and using vets as a media tools to score petty points. They desperately need some decent PR in there.

  31. Julia K says:

This has William written all over it. Not even the queen is this petty and spiteful.

    • Maevo says:

Yeah I could totally believe that William blocked the request from even getting to the Queen and she actually didn’t know.

      • BnLurkN4eva says:

I think she knew and like always looked the other way because she doesn’t like to deal with anything other than her horses and dogs. She’s ineffectual and only continues to enjoy favor because she’s been there so long and everyone’s used to her like a comfortable pair of old shoes.

      • February-Pisces says:

And yet they claim to “want him back”. They have done nothing for harry but make his life miserable. Let’s not forget harry and Meghan actually wanted to carry out royal duties, but were denied.
As for Willie, he’s a few steps away from becoming a whole super villain. He thinks he’s king already. I wonder if anyone in his life actually likes him, you don’t see him with any friends anymore.

      • Tessa says:

It is annoying on some blogs that Cambridge stans want back the so called glory days of Harry trailing after them as the Fab Three.

  32. Sid says:

And now there are photos of Prince Michael laying a wreath yesterday, even though he is not a working royal. So…..

    • notasugarhere says:

She’s quietly slid Prince Michael in; he shows up in the CC now. I’d bet the Sovereign Grant is paying most of the expenses for their space at KP now.

    • HeyJude says:

And even though his father-in-law Günther von Reibnitz, Princess Michael’s father, was involved in killing British soldiers as he was a Nazi SS Calvary Corps member in WW2.

The pedophile gets to lay a wreath.
The in-law of an SS member gets to lay a wreath.

The actual British war hero is refused.

…..Behold, the British Royal Family as led by Queen Elizabeth, Prince Charles, & Prince William, everyone!

  33. bluemoonhorse says:

Read this over the weekend and found it INCREDIBLY sad. I mean this is just depressing as hell. How Harry must be feeling – 🙁

    • February-Pisces says:

It’s sad for harry, it must have meant a lot to him to have asked. He’s the only one who actually put his life on the line to serve his country, whilst his family members award each other with honorary medals whilst slacking off.

  34. Lizzie says:

I have to wonder if any of the queens other grandchildren are quietly looking into a similar path and this is intended as a show of force saying once you are out then we will be brutal.

    • Maevo says:

I bet Anne and Edward are feeling pretty good right now about their decision to not give their kids titles and stay out of this mess!!

    • Becks1 says:

Except that there aren’t any other grandchildren who can walk like Harry did. Zara and Peter have never been working royals and I honestly don’t think they want to be – they seem to have pretty good lives, lots of perks that come with being the grandchildren of the queen and none of the nonsense about protocol etc – its been clear for years that the York princesses wont be working royals – and Louise and James are also never going to be working royals. The only one left who can walk is William, and he wont do that (not out of duty or whatever, but what the hell else would he do with his life? he needs the money and power that comes with being heir to the throne.)

No, this about hurting Harry, plain and simple, and its gross to see.

      • Sofia says:

You’re right that there’s nobody in the current generation but I wouldn’t be surprised if this was all a potential message/warning to Charlotte and Louis.

“Don’t act like Uncle Harry aka decide you’ve had enough of being a scapegoat for your brother or we will not hesitate to act like this”

But yeah. None of Liz’s other grandkids are working royals except for William and like you said, he won’t/can’t leave

      • Becks1 says:

And how messed up is that if this is meant a warning to Charlotte and Louis – you stay and you take whatever abuse we decide is warranted to protect George. Stories about Uncle Harry will be told as if he were the Duke of Windsor.

We’ve said it before but this could have been such a good transition point for the royal family. The heir and his/her spouse perform royal duties, no one else. they messed this whole situation up big time.

  35. Mignionette says:

The one year review categorically stated that Harry and Meg were to represent the Queen at all times in a way in which they would not bring her into disrepute.

Surely this act of huge respect would fall very clearly within that description. Imagine the positive press they would have garnered working with Harry. Especially at a time when the UK is isolated. The symbolism of reaching out to family, friends and associates in the US.

The BRF PR machine is a shambles.

  36. notasugarhere says:

Philip is no longer a working royal; he’s a retired private citizen. They allowed a wreath to be placed in his name as part of the ceremonies.

    • (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

      Same with Pedo.

    • anon says:

      Bingo. Exactly.

Apparently, a known pedophile still represents the British Royal Family while Harry has been runover by a Panzer tank (“panzer” is an intended reference) – a willful, defiant acknowledgement that pedophilia is more acceptable than marrying a woman of color. It’s literally painful to watch.

  37. 809Matriarch says:

People have claimed the animosity toward the Duke & Duchess of Windsor stemmed primarily from “Cookie” the rotten toothed QM. However, I believe the rot runs through the whole entitled arrogant KLAN as well as the snotty courtiers who are grander the the actuals royals. They have shown the world how spiteful and useless they are. Particularly galling was seeing the Earl of Wessex dressed in one of the ugliest uniforms on the planet, plastered with medals. He never even completed a full tour of duty. IIRC he quit before finishing basic training.

  38. 2cents says:

This tells me the royal family never fully appreciated Harry’s military accomplishments. They hardly supported Invictus Games and they cut his military career short by forcing him to do royal duties. They gave him honorary military titles to boost the royal PR-machine not out of respect for him. See how easily these titles were removed as a punishment for Sussexit.

The British royal family is regressive not progressive. This system is unable to evolve and highly outdated.

Harry and Meghan are destined to be humanitarian leaders on the global stage. It’s leadership towards a modern era of royalty in tune with the people.

  39. PNWer says:

Not only did Harry serve, he put heart and soul into the Invictus games for veterans. Not for the numbers, but because he truly cares. He’s not cosplaying and his medals aren’t fake.

  40. BnLurkN4eva says:

When I saw this, I felt so bad for Harry the same way I felt for Meghan when her paternal family were acting the fool leading up to her wedding to Harry. Man, both H/M has the worse types of humans on the paternal side of both their families. I bet family dysfunction is something that creates a extra closeness between them now. Meghan is no doubt the pro because for Harry a lot of this is new since I believe he ignored a great deal before he wasn’t able to ignore anymore. Meghan didn’t have an opportunity to ignore the dysfunction on her paternal side, it seemed to have been an issue her whole life.

  41. Amelie says:

Each time I think the BRF can’t stoop any lower, it sinks that much more. How petty and small-minded. This is definitely William’s doing, it’s so obvious. And Charles and the Queen let him do this, because they don’t want to deal with one of William’s legendary tantrums/incandescent rage.

Well, too bad. Harry and Meghan were always going to mark the day and release their own photos anyways. This is a day with much significance to Harry due to his own military service and military ties. Did they think he would just go to the beach and surf for the day? And also very smart for them to pick a place with ties to Meghan’s grandfather who worked for the VA across the street from the cemetery (he served in the Coast Guard).

  42. happycatangrycat says:

This isn’t a good look for the queen. She is either out of touch and unable to run her own “Firm” by not being aware of the decisions made by those under her. Or, she’s a Petty Betty. To be honest, both are probably true. As a Canadian who was formerly proud of having the monarchy linked to us (my great-grandfather was a British soldier,) I’m now looking forward to ditching this grifting bunch.

  43. L4frimaire says:

This is such a petty spiteful look by the BRF, especially at a time when the nation should come together to honor veterans. It they had laid that wreath, they would have looked like heroes, as though they were extending an olive branch, and been hailed for such a gracious gesture. It would have been a feel good story. Instead, they show their ugliness over and over again and we see them for exactly who they are. They just want to hurt Harry, because now it is specifically about Harry now. They only want him back to humiliate him. The only reason. We also noticed how begrudgingly they congratulated the new President and Vice-President Elect. Why is Britain so hell bent on becoming the sick man of Europe.

  44. Cel2495 says:

Damn the BRF are some petty ***holes

  45. anon says:

William, The Last King of England: “Yeah, we really showed him! Booyah! High fives!”

    Diana: —> Hard Stare. <—

Keep it up, KP. You're making Harry into a global legend, the likes of which you will never live down.

  46. ABritGuest says:

I wonder what the Firm will do as this wasnt great optics- remember when people used to go on about that? Coupled with reviews for the latest season of the Crown that aren’t flattering for the family& William’s covid diagnosis misfire- the PR people need to start earning their wages.

Remember when Katie Nicholls had her tales about things improving between the Sussexes & the rest of the family. This stunt shows that was likely BS. I suspect we will see some more family reaching out stuff, Queen or Kate being peacebrokers & ‘family misses Archie’ stories which will make me gag.

I hope Harry has the measure of the Firm now & can protect himself accordingly. Seeing how spiteful & petty they are being publicly i cannot imagine how they are behind closed doors. Yikes

  47. RedWeatherTiger says:

The entire BRF is petty AF, and the whole world sees it now. How absolutely disgraceful.

  48. Jaded says:

I can’t believe the BRF denied Harry’s request to lay a wreath. He fought, lost comrades, has worked tirelessly to support the military and this??? My dad was a WWII veteran. He flew bombing missions with the RCAF and later the RAF in North Africa. He lived through 2 plane crashes, almost got picked up by Rommel’s troops and lost many fellow airmen. Every November 11 (I’m Canadian) on Remembrance Day I get all teary thinking of him (he passed in 2003) and the horrors he went through to end tyranny. And yet the effing BRF/courtiers/grey men silenced Harry. A pox on them all.

    • February-Pisces says:

Harry is the only one who actually put his life on the line to serve his country. It would have been a nice gesture on the firms part if they did lay a wreath in Harry’s name, but they don’t see that. They are so short sighted. I feel like the firm is basically run by the media now, I wouldn’t be surprised of the DM or The Sun themselves made KP get harrys request rejected just to twist the knife.

  49. Mindy_Dopple says:

People have mentioned this, but how the excuse of the Queen not being aware of a huge family decision regarding her grandson even being passed around? That makes the palace look EVEN worse, the courtiers are making QUEEN decisions. How is that allowed??! At this point that can’t be an excuse?!!

  50. Islandgirl says:

I am not sure what to make of this. It looks quite petty…what they did. But I know that they don’t intend to look that way so then they look incompetent.
Maybe that is the thing. They are so angry that Harry left and that he is not failing and about to return on bended knees that they are not thinking of the unintended consequences of their actions.
The intended consequence was to hurt Harry. Finding Freedom was clear that having to give up his military partonages was painful and so that is all that they have left to really hurt him and they used it.
Completing missing just how it would make the BRF look.
    This is so sad.

    • Lizzie says:

Maybe the couriers could have a press conference to clear this up…at the Four Seasons Landscaping, next the porn shop, across from crematorium, between the yellow hose and the fire extinguisher.

  51. Claire says:

Wow, this is pretty AF on the part of the Queen. Sidebar: for some reason I always assumed Omid Scobie was a crusty old journo, but his profile picture makes him look like a young hip guy. His writing about the Sussexes is making more sense to me now!

  52. Lowrider says:

The petty palace will not accommodate Harry. He needs to move on from it and just continue doing his own thing.

  53. Phyllis says:

As a combat veteran, I am incredibly moved by H/M’s actions in LA for some reason.

  54. Abby says:

This makes me furious for Harry. So angry.

  55. HeyJude says:

This is absolutely beyond disgusting and I’ve lost all remaining civility I had towards the BRF. (All civility just of my own ultra calm nature. Let’s face it they didn’t deserve civility after banishing the black family or the pedo son.)

But the fact they don’t even care about allowing a wreath to remember the soldiers who had their guts shot out to keep them in power!?! This has finally been the last straw and turned me into a rabid anti-monarchist. They’re not fit to be even ceremonially heads of country.

Playing games over the graves of soldiers is just beyond the pale. They must be stripped of power by Britain. Forget Brexit, it’s time for Rexit.

  56. JRenee says:

Reflects poorly on the BRF! Who would go back to such a petty family?

  57. NotSoSimpleTaylor says:

I think this speaks volumes about the plan this spring. As far as Elizabeth is concerned, Harry is out. I suspect titles will be stripped at some point.

The original hope that Harry and Meghan would cool off and come back was dashed the second they signed the Netflix deal. They were supposed to fail and come back with their tails between their legs. Instead, they have everything they wanted and they will have fulfilling work outside the royal family. The Queen and William are pissed and petty enough to strip him of everything and use titles as an excuse to abuse him. If I were Harry, I would relinquish their control and abuse by voluntarily giving up his titles. He needs to wash his hands of all of it. He will be just as famous as Harry New Last Name (I don’t want him to choose Mountbatten-Windsor). If the rest of them can’t swallow their pride, it’s their problem. Harry has long shown little interest in being a royal and while many could argue he sould keep the titles to roil them, I think he should just give it all up for his own sanity.

    • ola says:

      This. Exactly this.
Cut the bloody navel string and start your life anew. They can easily make their own names globally without sucking up to the RF.
They made a decision. They wanted to have control of their lives. They wanted to be financially independent. They wanted raise Archie privately and quietly. Now it’s time to live up to the consequences of their choice.
The voluntary relinquishment of the titles would be such a dignified way of showing the middle finger to RF.
You can’t be both feet out of the door and still have a seat at the table.

      • ABritGuest says:

Ola you do realise there are non working royals with titles right? Yet people live perfectly fine with them having titles (some even have HRHs& use them in their business dealings) & ‘having their cake & eating it’. If that’s the rule it should apply across the board.

I don’t think they should volunteer to give up a damn thing. They have already gone above and beyond when they haven’t done anything wrong & still wanted to support the Queen in a way that seems to be just fine for her cousin. The bitter people at the palace who wanted to drive Meghan out for the crime of marrying a Prince & wanting to work should just deal.

      • NotSoSimpleTaylor says:

I 100% agree with ABritGuest that they shouldn’t HAVE to give up anything. I personally would rather they didn’t but Harry has to ask himself if his birthright is worth the future he is building for himself. I think he’ll be fine either way. This isn’t a case of having cake and eating it. It’s more of a case of he doesn’t need it, everyone is using it as a stick to beat him with and only Harry can answer and be accountable to putting up with the media abuse. Personally, I’d chuck it all away in the most dignified manner possible. Although in thinking on it further, I think that may be the game the BRF is playing. They want to make his life miserable so he voluntarily gives it all up.

      • RoyalBlue says:

I would not give up anything either. There are all kinds of two bit royals in Europe with titles from countries that no longer have monarchies. They hold on to those titles like it’s gold, and I would too if I were the Sussexes. This just exposes the madness of the Windsors.

    • Jane's Wasted Talent says:

It doesn’t matter- if they give up the titles, the press will start in about their wedding costs (they’ve floated trial balloons for this already). The best course of action would be to stop expecting personality-disordered people to behave like they’re healthy and sane. Just keep ignoring them, with occasional articles highlighting their racism and abusiveness (a la the Kate vs Meghan piece from Buzzfeed).

      • NotSoSimpleTaylor says:

I see your point but Harry isn’t the one who insisted on a big wedding, Charles was. If it is that much of a concern then they need to pay it back out of the Cornwall Duchy and that is where the focus should be. Not that it will be.

    • Tessa says:

The York Princesses do not work as royals and have full titles and no chance of the titles being removed. The Wessexes were allowed to do part time work and keep their respective businesses going. So I don’t see why there should be a question of Harry and Meghan’s titles being removed.

      • NotSoSimpleTaylor says:

No matter what Harry decides to do, he’s already won. You say why should he get rid of his titles? I say why not get rid of them and share all of his goodwill with the Americans who actually appreciate him, have offered him safe harbor, and want to see him succeed? Those titles are nothing more than a stick they are beating Harry with. He owes the UK nothing and has the chance at an amazing life in America.

Also, do we know the exact name Harry and Meghan signed their entertainment contracts under? I think that would be key to Harry’s thoughts on the matter.

      • BnLurkN4eva says:

Harry and Meghan must never give up those titles. If the BRF, BM, BG wants those titles, strip it from them for the whole world to see. Never give them up H/M, let them come get them and explain to the world why the child rapist still has his.

This family is hilariously bad at the ‘job’ they claim to do. Their entire existence is a PR exercise and they are just so so bad at it. The Queen is an amazing and no-nonsense matriarch they tell us, yet every day we’re told that she was ‘not made aware’ of whatever f*ckup they’re trying to walk back. These idiots really do think Harry leaving is equivalent to Edward abdicating, and every petty move they make to try and convince people that they banished him proves it. They truly live in their own little bubble of delusion and it’s both hilarious and sad.

    • Tessa says:

Two entirely different situations. So tired of Harry being compared to King Edward. Harry is nowhere near the top of the list in line of succession, Edward became King and abdicated. The Queen is to blame for the wreath fiasco. As Truman once said, the buck stops here. And the Queen is in charge not a courtier.

  63. NotSoSimpleTaylor says:

On another note, I recall from my time in America, this holiday is only marginally celebrated. And Veteran Services are underfunded and under privileged. I feel Harry would be an amazing advocate for Veterans in the USA and if I were him, that is where I would realign my focus going forward. Veterans in the UK are important but this is a very unique opportunity he has in the USA that he needs to really take advantage of. He could do so much to make this holiday more meaningful in America.

    • Tessa says:

I agree. There are some veterans who have a difficult time getting the healthcare and medicine they need. Harry needs to take up their cause.

  64. OK says:

You don’t lay a wreath in your name at the cenotaph, the wreaths are laid in the name of the services and related bodies, for example Charles laid a wreath on behalf of the Army, William’s on behalf of the airforce , Anne’s the navy , Edwards the marines, Boris’s on behalf of the nation. then wreaths on behalf of other services departments such as Army Nursing Corps, Paratroopers, The Rifles etc. As Harry has no official military role any more then he could not lay a wreath at that particular ceremony and time. He could have had a wreath added after the official part of the ceremony. The same with the disgraced Andrew who was not permitted a presence (there is some BS story of him isolating with covid doing the rounds).

Harry could have paid for his wreath (the official legion wreaths cost a thousand pounds a piece- it’s a donation) had one of his friends pick it up and lay it at the cenotaph or any of the monuments around the country with no fuss, those wreaths are made up to a year in advance and there was one sitting in the legions warehouse labeled ‘HRH the Duke of Sussex’ waiting to be paid for and picked up, they said it had not been paid for and they had no instructions on what to do with it. There is a transparent pocket on the wreath where one can add a personal message but the cenotaph wreaths are not personal wreaths. I sometimes think Harry has relied so much on others organizing things for him all his life that he really doesn’t understand exactly how things work.

    • anotherlily says:

The Prince of Wales laid 3 wreaths at the Cenotaph. The first on behalf of The Queen, the second on behalf of Prince Philip and the third from himself. The Queen’s wreath is laid on behalf of the nation. All other wreaths are laid by individuals from themselves acting as current occupants of a particular role, such as Foreign Secretary, or as representatives of , for example, a regiment, or an organisation. Boris Johnson’s wreath was labelled as from the Prime Minister with a personal message. Other political leaders laid wreaths. Charles’ wreath included the three white feathers historic symbol of the Prince of Wales. Prince Edward’s wreath was most definitely not on behalf of the Marines nor was Anne’s on behalf of the Navy.

    • blue36 says:

That’s why he asked BP to do it, especially if it was for one of his previously held honorary titles. He might not hold them anymore, but that doesn’t meant they shouldn’t be honored and have a wreath laid for them, and do you honestly believe they would have let one of his friends lay it for him? The only thing he asked them was to just lay it there, not only did they deny it, they decided to publish their cruelty in the papers. This is just making up excuses for the palace and they don’t deserve any defense in this scenario.

    • Thirtynine says:

From how the event was described, charities laid wreaths for themselves and Arthur Edwards laid one for the Sun readers. Hardly working royals for the services. So that doesn’t hold up. And I also heard one was laid in Prince Philips name. So that doesnt work either. As far as Harry being helpless while others organise things for him- well, that is laughable. I dont think any responsible person comes out of the services unable to manage themselves, and Harry’s accomplishments in managing and organising extremely successful events and initiatives around the globe hardly indicates a man unable to get his act together.
So, yes, the refusal was petty and designed to hurt. I am glad he did this, he clearly wanted to send a message to his fellow vets, his brothers in arms, that he did not forget them. It is Remembrance Day after all.
And I bet next year he could have dozens of fellow commonwealth vets there with him sharing in the moment. I would like to see that. The RF might have followed tradtion, with those who never served laying wreaths all dressed up in pseudo military cosplay for the occasion, but I think Harry marked the spirit of the day. Lest we forget.

    • Lemons says:

OK…Harry managed to lay a wreath out in California for Remembrance Day at the memorials of two Commonwealth soldiers with a cameraman to commemorate the event.

The family refused to lay a wreath that was already made and paid for (otherwise it wouldn’t have been made), so it was left, sitting, unused because it was organized the Harry. They figured, if you can’t lay it yourself, we won’t do it for you. It has nothing to do with what Harry is capable of organizing or not. It’s not his job to do it since he’s out of the country. What’s the sense of being royal if the courtiers are this incompetent?

  65. L4frimaire says:

I just find this whole incident with the Royal family depressing and vicious. This attempt to humiliate Harry so publicly was planned and coordinated well in advance. Just disgusted and I really feel for him. They have no right to be angry at him for commemorating Remembrance Day in his own way. I hope he can find some peace because the Royal family seem to feel extremely threatened by the Sussexes, more so than before they left, and they definitely felt threatened when they were senior royals. I really don’t understand what they’re doing over there. Between this and the flailing of the Brexit government, they are really doubling down on the far right hate. There has been a really ugly shift in regard to the Royal family and how they are presenting themselves to the world. As for those justifying this behavior, what is it all for? Please enlighten us because I don’t have any respect for the Royals from this blatantly disgusting, messy behavior toward their own.

  66. Awkward symphony says:

I’m beyond disgusted by the petty tone deaf losers at the palace going this far to “punish” harry even at cost of personal humiliation! Looking in Twitter I’m glad fo see the number of people voicing their support for harry. Especially from none royalists.
Those in the palace are acting like toddler incheif trump. He wanted to do this on behalf of his fellow veterans and division which he’s still the colonel of. Shame on them for doing this and I dont buy that lizzy didnt know about this. This will end up costing them. Especially after Brexit next year. I didn’t think harry and meghan would be attending trooping the colour and this might just push them over the edge to cut off this petty & jealous institution.

    • anotherlily says:

It could have been the Sussexes who ‘leaked’ the information.

At some point before Remembrance Sunday the wreaths from the royals would have been despatched to Buckingham Palace or some other central destination or collected by an Aide. These things follow long established procedure. Someone gave the instruction to leave Harry’s wreath behind. All the wreaths would be taken to Whitehall before the Remembrance Service. Harry probably assumed that his wreath had been collected when he asked for it to be laid on his behalf. Even if someone had agreed to lay his wreath, it was missing. According to reports it was ‘eventually traced’ to the RBL headquarters.

The question now is why Harry’s wreath was not collected and who decided to leave it behind. As others here have noted there seemed to be some tension among the royals. I thought Charles had a rather distressed look as he emerged from the building.

      • ABritGuest says:

Nah the Firm leaked it. Its consistent with all the manoeuvres they have been doing around Harry’s military appointments & gearing up for someone else to take them.

I don’t even think the leak was a family member’s move- I think it was a petty courtier. They probably liked the idea of sticking it to Harry but were keen to provide cover to the Queen which is why the Times headline said the Queen didn’t know about Harry’s request.

    • anotherlily says:

I was wrong about Charles laying Philip’s wreath – an equerry laid the wreath for Prince Philip.
