Olivia Wilde & Jason Sudeikis ‘had issues & they were never going to get married’

Los Angeles Special Screening Of Annapurna Pictures' 'If Beale Street Could Talk'

Olivia Wilde & Jason Sudeikis announced their split with an uncredited exclusive in People Magazine less than a week ago. It was interesting because, from where I sit, no one had really been checking on them this year? And it does sound like they were separated for much of the year. I’m not saying that they were trying to generate interest in their breakup, but I do think that they probably announced it when they did for a reason, and we’ll figure that out soon enough. For now, we’ll just have to settle for this somewhat interesting Us Weekly story on “what went wrong,” which sounds like it just came from Olivia’s camp.

Olivia Wilde and Jason Sudeikis’ split may have come as a surprise to fans, but according to a source, the former couple grew apart over time.

“They’ve been separated for months now and there really is no drama. They’re handling this like adults,” the source reveals exclusively in the new issue of Us Weekly. “It’s all about coparenting their kids, Daisy and Otis. That’s the priority for them.”

Us confirmed on Friday, November 13, that Wilde, 36, and Sudeikis, 45, called off their engagement after nine years together. The pair, who share son Otis, 6, and daughter Daisy, 4, got engaged in 2012 after two years of dating.

“They’re both successful in their own right and have multiple projects in the works. No one expects any big money grab or custody battle,” the source continues. “Olivia has a very promising directing and producing career and Jason has films lined up.”

According to the source, the pair’s bicoastal lifestyle also played a factor in their split.

“Of course, there were arguments and fights over career decisions and where to live. Like most couples, they had disagreements, they were bicoastal but Jason loved living in New York and Olivia, who was born in NYC, was leaning more toward Los Angeles,” the insider explains to Us. “She was also busier than him at times, which was difficult at times. They butted heads on many occasions and decided it was best to go their separate ways.” The source concludes, “Bottom line: they had issues and they were never going to get married.”

[From Us Weekly]

This reminds me that I used to believe that Olivia wanted to get married more than him, and he was more like “why don’t we just live together and raise the kids together?” I still sort of believe that was their dynamic – he was gun-shy about marriage, she wanted to lock it down. But I can also see how, in the past few years, they just grew apart and had normal couple issues and stuff. That being said, I still say they were a weird couple and they never really “fit” together in the first place. Olivia’s people are being shady about it after the fact too: “She was also busier than him at times, which was difficult at times” and “Olivia has a very promising directing and producing career and Jason has films lined up.” Mmhm.

This seems all very Ted Lasso.

  2. Millennial says:

This is what I speculated which is they didn’t really feel like “trading off” projects so they could spend more time together. They each wanted full time careers and not to have to follow each other around to keep the family together. Cant blame either one, really.

  3. Lady Baden-Baden says:

Shady or not, it’s def true – Wilde’s career is HOT right now (directing-wise), Sudeikis’s career is more… steady.

A split like this does make me wonder if it’s another case of a man not being able to handle his partner’s success. Hopefully not – I have a long-standing crush on Sudeikis!

she directed one feature film, so her career just took off, fingers crossed it will go great, but this embiggening her and belittling him seems a bit far fetched. He also has a hit series. I like them both and hope, this will not get ugly.

      • Lady Baden-Baden says:

She directed one feature film, yes, but it was one of the most critically acclaimed films of last year, which made her hot property in H/wood (quite right too – talented female directors are so often overlooked). Marvel snapped her up for a ‘secret’ directing project (prob Spiderwoman) which IS a huge deal, especially for a woman, and she’s currently filming and acting in another (not to mention the rumors of other future projects). I stand by saying her career is HOT. Def not trying to belittle him though. He’s great – just not as in-demand as she is right now

      • BayTampaBay says:

I never liked her anything but House.

      • TJ says:

They hugged & kissed on THIS MONDAY. I don’t think this will get ugly. I think they’ll end up good, supportive co-parents/friends. They might be in that phase already.

    • atorontogal says:

She directed Red Hot Chili Peppers last video – love the song Dark Necessities.

    • TJ says:

Nah, they are each other’s cheerleaders still.

  4. SJ Knows says:

Just my 2 cents but, when you are financially well off with 2 careers and travel or are away for 1-2 months at a month for work, I think it’s pretty easy to lose connection or grow more distant from each other.

No matter to me, as long as they co-parent well, it’s the kids that need them.

    • megs283 says:

It’s also easy when you’re not financially well-off and don’t travel for 1-2 months at a time for work. The daily grind is TOUGH!

  5. Veruca Salty says:

I saw them a couple years ago at an Arcade Fire concert in LA, we were all in the same row/section up front, and you never would’ve known they were a couple. She was friendly, gregarious and chatting a lot with Colin Hanks; whereas Jason wasn’t as social and was on his phone mostly. She is stunning in person, by the way.

  6. Jayna says:

I think they were a cute couple and really seemed like devoted parents. On Ellen, last year he interviewed Olivia, and the interview was basically funny family stories.

His Ted Lasso series films in England. It’s been renewed for two more seasons. So he’ll be over there a lot. Writing and directing a movie is all-consuming. The writing, the financing, the preproduction work, the actual movie, the postproduction work. So Olivia is massively busy with her projects. They are a Brooklyn couple but they ended up also buying a home in California also where I guess she wants to be based.

It does sound like two busy careers that takes you away from each other where it ends up the marriage is the casualty. I guess being quarantined together couldn’t save the marriage. I’m sure it’s sad for them. Their children are young. It’s heartbreaking to do that to them. They seem to be the kind of couple to make it as easy as they can for the kids. I think they’ll be another Liev and Naomi who still show each other a lot of love and respect, which benefits their little ones.

The photo of Olivia and Jason hugging and laughing the other day shows whatever they went through they’ve settled into their new normal amicably.

  7. Valiantly Varnished says:

Nine years and two kids is a good run so I wouldn’t characterize their pairing as out of place or strange. Sounds like they wanted different things and grew apart. Normal couple stuff.

    • lucy2 says:

I agree, it sounds normal and pretty drama-free. And hopefully for their kids’ sake, they continue to get along and co-parent well.

  8. Case says:

I hope they’re able to maintain a civil relationship for the kids. It sounds like they’re trying. They strike me as pretty chill people, so I don’t expect much drama from them.

  9. Wren says:

Is he the father of January Jones’ son Xander, or am I confusing my gossip?

  10. Chimes@Midnight says:

    Re: being a bicoastal couple

Wasnt this one of the reasons cited when Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux broke up? She wanted to be a sunny days California sisterhood goddess and he was a motorcycle boots and hot coffee NYC guy?

  11. Lala11_7 says:

    I got REAL STRONG “Klum/Seal” vibes off of them…due to Olivia’s 👄 😅…so this didn’t surprise me…in the least….

  12. nicegirl says:

I’ve lived a relationship similar to this and pursuing my independence has been a gift of freedom. We’re still living under the patriarchy, right. Society is still lagging behind where women are headed and dragging its feet.

  13. Kristen says:

For some reason I feel like it was the other way around: he wanted to get married and she was the one putting it off.

  14. B says:

Personally, I dont think that he is attractive at all. Kind of creepy

  15. Amanda says:

So Jason is from my hometown and does a ton of charity work for different places, and he did a virtual event (Thundergong!) this past weekend for a local org that is headed by a friend of his (Steps of Faith, they help amputees with getting prosthetics), which was really cool. The part that made me go “hmm” was he did a bit in character as Ted Lasso and dedicated it to “his favorite director Olivia Wilde” and then went on to sing “Patience” by Guns N Roses. I know that all probably sounds a little strange but in the moment it was really sweet and it gave me the impression maybe Jason was not the one who did the breaking up? I think they are both great, and hope they land on their feet, and I secretly hope Jason decides to move back to Kansas City, we all love him here. And he can bring Roy Kent and Coach Beard with him!

    • TJ says:

Jason did some interviews days before that event & he was also up to date about what Olivia doing in her quarantine because somebody had a positive COVID test in her new movie ‘Don’t worry Darling’, And Olivia tweeted support for that charity & the concert. Which Jason liked on twitter.

It’s very obvious to me that they are still very close to each other,

  16. Pocket Litter says:

I’d say his wandering weenie likely played a part in the break-up.

  17. TJ says:

Just my 2 cents, but I don’t think this “story” came from Olivia’s camp. Sounds like some of this are made up stuff. On the weekend they showed support to each other, Jason even gave a detailed report what Olivia done during the COVID shutdown of her new movie. And on Monday they were seen hugging & kissing each other.

  18. Miss Margo says:

Wait… They were engaged for eight years?! LOLOLOL. That is ridiculous.

  19. John W says:

So you’re saying Olivia is available?

  20. Juju says:

I’m not sure about the credibility of this source. Olivia really doesn’t seem to be busier than him. I think it’s quite the opposite.
