I mean, this is sort of like how George Clooney won’t rule out running for president when he has something to promote, right? On the other hand, name recognition would help and they’ve surely had less capable governors… would rather see mcconaughey own a sports team though.
He does. He owns Austin FC.
the difference is george clooney has TONS of skeletons in his closet – though most are in the Lake Como area. he, Amal & their twins + the help have been in his LA place this entire year. he did plan for political ambitions – Amal was part of that plan.
post-metoo & with certain investigations going on abroad, thats not on the list anymore
Please share more, I’m intrigued!
Noooooooo. Please, celebrities with no governing experience, stop assuming you are qualified for office. If a mechanic rolled out of bed one morning and said “I think I’ll run for Governor” we would balk. Run for local office, it’s important and more normal people should be involved. Get involved in supporting activists. You do not always have to be the star of everything. I know you’ve spent your life with people blowing smoke up your butt, but you’re not automatically awesome at everything. I thought we just learned our lesson with Trump!?
Chris, thank you. I’m SO sick of celebrities acting like they’re qualified to run for the highest elected offices. No. If you REALLY want to get into politics, run for local office. You could actually change things there. But that’s not what they want, to change things – just to feed their egos. Stop.
100% agree.
All of this, times a million.
I certainly think an actor is capable of holding office, but don’t START with governor, especially of a massive state like Texas. Smaller offices, build your resume and experience.
on the one hand: NUUUUUUUUU.
on the other hand: I’d vote for him over Abbott.
As a fellow Texan, I agree.
Wait, why should we balk at a mechanic running for Governor?
I think we need to make a different plea: Americans, please stop VOTING for celebrities with no governing experience. Anyone can run, but it is the citizens that give them any power. Now that Trump won, every kind of celeb is going to get the idea they succeed because the PEOPLE elected Trump.
Absolutely and look where a famous guy with zero experience has got the county right now. Start with local politics and learn the ropes just like it should be for all positions.
Trump elected POTUS four years ago, a massive pandemic changing life as we know it, Kate growing before our eyes into FQC – why not for Matt to go into politics. At this rate, anything can happen.
Ronald Reagan, Arnold and Hulk Hogan all did this. Celebrities with no previous political experience running and winning. We are a nation of morons.
Jesse “The Body” Ventura, who was a wrestler was governor of Minnesota at one point.
Idiocracy.
ugh
Can we please learn our lesson from Trump and not elect unqualified egomaniacal celebrities into government positions? Please?
+1
Alright alright alright I say no way no way no way!
This is the problem with celebrities. And internet personalities. And anyone with a huge following. Somewhere in their self-obsessed uneducated brains, popularity equates to ability. I’ve actually heard certain actors put their educations on pedestals because of diversified roles. It’s absurd.
Dunning-Kruger affect.
In spades.
YES! They take their acting so seriously, they act their way into positions in which they are just puppets.
Oh god please no. Texas is already a dumpster fire with Abbot, Cornyn, Cruz and the rest of the sh-theads that run this place. Ive been stuck here because of Covid and I am just waiting to be let out. Seriously I can’t run away fast enough. Texas used to be a good place to live, home prices are through the roof. Too many California migrants are making prices crazy insane. All I think about is how I spent 700€ to live in Paris but they’re asking for $2000 to live here. Gee… which would I rather have… no contest. I doubt Matty knows anything about government and nothing in his interviews have told me he does. The problem is a few people in Austin have told him he is King of Austin so he thinks he can do the same for the rest of Texas, but I don’t think anyone from Houston or Dallas care as much for him. I know no one in San Antonio does.
Yes I completely agree! If you aspire to a higher office someday, work your way up through the ranks starting with your local municipal, township or county offices. And then state and THEN federal. Get some government experience on all levels so that you know how it works.
Matthew McConaughey has about as much business running for governor of Texas as a cactus in Norway. He has zero qualifications and the last thing that state needs is an actor cosplaying at governance.
Hell no.
I know everyone is sick of celebrities running for office and I 100% get it, but if he could flip Texas blue, totally worth it. The only way we are ever getting rid of the electoral college that cements GOP white minority rule is by flipping Texas. Just make sure he hires competent civil servants to do all the actual work.
I don’t have a problem if he has excellent democratic advisors. He’s a smart guy, I believe and if he’s a Democrat? Hell to the yes.
The very best tweet about this wondered if he’d run as a Democrat or as an Alt-right Alt-right Alt-right
@trish OMG 😂
Comment of the week vote!!
Daisy Ridley looks like a Chanel pirate and I do not like it one bit.
On Colbert, McConaughey kind of shot that down. He expressed the notion that he might be able to do more good as a citizen than as president, so he and we are safe.
I was not a fan of him but the other day i started reading his book Greenlights. Wow its a fabulous read – and if there were an actor who could ever run – it would be him. Believe me – I am floored about how insightful this book is – and absolutely enjoyable
I really liked his (audio) book too! I have been dealing with a variety of stressors these last few weeks and his “greenlights” philosophy was really helpful – eventually, “red lights” will turn green.
