Donald Trump is thinking about announcing his 2024 run by the end of the year

Trump speaks on prescription prices from the White House

On Friday, a very orange fascist spoke at the White House podium. Donald Trump said words about prescription drug prices and the coronavirus or something. No one paid much attention, even if it was only his third public appearance since losing the election, something he still has not admitted publicly. President-Elect Joe Biden continues to plan his administration, and he continues to do all of the normal work of the transition without the funding and without any briefings from the Trump White House. The media still doesn’t know what to f–king do or how to cover it. Perhaps this will make it slightly easier: Trump is apparently thinking about announcing his 2024 run by the end of this year. In doing so, it will be a de facto concession.

As Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the election he lost to Joe Biden seem increasingly unlikely to succeed, the president and those in his orbit are apparently looking ahead—possibly to 2024. Trump, contemplating what his future will look like upon exiting the White House, reportedly sees running again as a way to preserve his hold on the political and media landscape, and he may announce plans to do so before year’s end.

“One adviser who recently spoke with the president said that Trump told him he planned to announce a new campaign in three weeks, and that he wanted to act quickly to try to freeze the large field of prospective 2024 Republican presidential candidates,” according to the Washington Post. The group of potential GOP contenders includes Vice President Mike Pence, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo—whose political ambitions have recently drawn attention following a trip to Israel seen as presidential posturing—and former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley.

Given Trump’s erratic tendencies, some confidants emphasized that the president has yet to make a final decision on the matter but noted that announcing a 2024 bid would help Trump maintain a presence in Republican politics and ensure loyalty prior to another presidential run. “It would be a fool’s errand to declare you’re running for president at the end of this year, but on the other hand, to keep your hold over the party and fight Republican legacy hierarchy so that they can’t erase you from history, it’s important to remain a front-runner in this process,” said ex-Trump adviser Sam Nunberg.

There have been previous murmurs of a Trump 2024 bid, but not with concrete timing. That Trump is reportedly considering announcing his next act within a matter of weeks, even as he and his lawyers attack the democratic process and try to reverse his loss in court, betrays the president’s belief in his own campaign’s dimming legal battle. Trump surrogates are apparently pumping the brakes on publicizing the lawsuit charade, at least when it comes to promoting their failures on air:

The optics-obsessed president may see announcing a new campaign as a way to preserve his image on the heels of his loss. “I do think if he’s not declared the winner he’ll make it clear he’s running again in 2024,” a senior Trump campaign staffer said. One senior administration official who had recently spoken to Trump told the Post that “you will not persuade him that he should change his time frame on making any decision based on what’s quote unquote best for the party. He doesn’t care,” a self-interest that may come to dominate the party apparatus. “We could find ourselves deep into a 2024 election cycle, into mid-2023, and he still hasn’t definitely said he’s not running and you’re just going to see all these 2024 potential contenders uncertain about what to do.”

[From Vanity Fair]

At this point, I could care less about what happens in the death cult of the Trump-Republican Party, but I know I have to pay attention to this sh-t because there are millions of unhinged death-culters out there. I do think it’s funny that Trump could possibly screw over Ted Cruz, Mother’s Husband, Tom Cotton and every other Republican thinking about running in 2024. Those dumbasses wanted a clown show and now the clown refuses to cede the spotlight. But, again, the second Trump announces for 2024 is the second that he f–king concedes that he didn’t win this time. As for all of the panic about what Trump could do… I mean, he’ll do much of the same sh-t he did in office. He’ll tweet conspiracies all day, he’ll lie constantly and he’ll golf. Plus, he’s facing like a dozen major investigations and civil cases, so he’ll be pretty busy.

Oh my god, read the room filled with 80 million people and go away. We dont want you!

    • Tanguerita says:

yeah, but he is reading the room filled with almost 74 million people, so no, he won’t go away. I just got into a huge fight with two unhinged Trumpers on – of all places – goodreads. The level of hypocrisy and gaslighting is beyond words.

      • Becks1 says:

I’m sorry, there’s nothing funny about this situation in general, but I am laughing that you got into a fight about it on goodreads.

    • FF says:

He’s never had to read a room in his life, his enablers make sure he keeps failing. The best you can hope for is Mother Nature putting a full stop on bis efforts.

  2. Rapunzel says:

He won’t tweet. Twitter will ban his ass, immediately. And the GOP isn’t gonna want his ass running again. The knives will come out as soon as the Georgia run off are over. And if the Dems win the run offs, it will be especially ugly.

    • schmootc says:

I know Twitter has said that once he’s out of office, he’ll be just like any other user and subject to all the same terms. But if he’s a candidate again, I’m not sure they’ll stick to that. Is it disgusting? Yes.

  3. Chill says:

    LOSER

  4. Sayrah says:

Lmfao. Go ahead and concede. And you’re right, he’s pushing all the other GOP hopefuls 2024 aspirations down the drain too. Sycophantic jerks, you reap what you sow.

If they don’t fall in line he’ll just run as an independent and take tons of votes.

  5. MaryContrary says:

He won’t actually run-but it gives him a bigger way to grift in the meanwhile. And he’s no “kingmaker”-he’s only ever about himself.

  6. Imogene says:

I’m not worried – I just don’t think he will be in any shape to run in 4 years. It is pretty clear he is in decline and imagine what that looks like in a few years. This is just a way for him to save face.

    • Mac says:

He needs to live another four years. He’s obese, doesn’t exercise, and has a terrible diet. If he does die, American Psycho 1 and Plastic Barbie will both try to run.

      • JanetDR says:

When I see video of him lately, he looks as though he has lost weight. Not that lost weight makes him a better candidate! 😂 May be live many long years in prison.

    • Noodle says:

The cognitive decline is pretty clear. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn he is the early stages of Alzheimer’s, based on what we see.

    • Korra says:

He is in bad shape and will only get worse, but there is a twisted part of me that wants him to run just to put his physical decline out there for all to see (if he is still alive). Trumpism isn’t going anyway anytime soon, but I could see his base not having the same zeal for him like they did in 2016 or even this year. Besides the obvious bigotry and hatred, what made him so attractive to them was this authoritarian strongman persona he sold them on.

I feel he would look so pitiful by 2024, they will quietly look for that bombastic strongman persona elsewhere and be less inclined to show up to his rallies, let alone want to vote for him. Think of it as his sophomore slump, lol.

  7. StrawberryBlonde says:

My hope for Trump is that he goes to prison, loses all his money, and sinks into obscurity. He deserves so much for people to forget his name.

However the only bad thing about this would be that no one should ever forget because when you forget history you are doomed to repeat it.

    • Rapunzel says:

He’ll start his own MAGA party is my guess.

      • Chris says:

Go ahead and let him split the Republican vote. Let them eat eachother.

      • Tanguerita says:

Starting a new party requires a lot of drive, dedication and organisational skills. People around Trump are disfunctional grifters that care only about themselves. They won’t be any new party. He will keep destroying what’s left of Republican party. My only hope rests with Letitia James, plus payment deadlines for more than three hundred million dollars in loans.

    • Arpeggi says:

I don’t know if he’ll ever go to jail, he’ll likely die before that happens because he’ll keep appealing. But I’m 100% sure he’ll be broke by the time he dies and I take a small comfort in that

    • Valerie says:

I think both can happen. He and his rotten family can sink into obscurity, AND we will all make sure that they stay there by remembering what they did to the US.

    • Two words for post presidential relevancy: Sarah Palin

  8. Digital Unicorn says:

I can totally see him announcing a run for 2024 on the day of Biden’s inauguration and to also screw over anyone else in the GOP who would like to run.

Question, if he does run again are the party obliged to support that – given he is a soon to be former President?

    • Becks1 says:

It would look bad for the party to not support him, but generally after an election loss people move on. Like George HW didn’t run again in 1996, he just went into his post-presidential life. But at any rate, because Trump is never going to just fade away, there would still be a primary and it would still be the republicans who would pick the candidate, so it might not be him. But it would guarantee that what’s already likely to be a messy primary battle in 2024 for the Rs would be even messier.

      • Mignionette says:

I think they would pick him again. We live in the era of the charismatic narcissistic leader and DT has a huge SM following.

The MAGA’s are not fading away.

I think the GOP will keep him around ceremoniously to keep their MAGA base happy and then perfect the playbook on a more intelligent and statesman like DT, but still with all the hateful rhetoric of DT.

      • mytwocents says:

His niece Mary, who wrote the book about him and hates his guts, doesn’t believe he’ll actually run in 2024 but that this talk now is to save face. She thinks this current loss has shaken him and that he won’t be able to face another possibility of losing, so he won’t run again. Let’s hope this is true!

      • cassandra says:

Yeah I don’t think he’ll actually run, but I encourage him to take that whole Republican ship down with him.

    • LightPurple says:

No, they can and will primary him, which will be fascinating to watch all those who did his bidding happily, like Haley, Cruz, and Rubio, turning against him in debates.

Not only will he be screwing them, he’ll also be screwing Junior, who had his sites set on running in 2024.

      • AMA1977 says:

Just think for a minute about the sheer hubris and audacity of DJT Jr. to think for a MOMENT that he has ANY of the qualities needed to be a successful president. It boggles the mind. No horn-tooting here, but I am a very well-read, well-informed, well-educated person, and I freely admit that I am not up to the task of the presidency. The exaltation of mediocrity that would make an imbecile like Don Jr. think he would be effective or respected is astonishing. They really think this is all just a game. Grifty, stupid, racist, mean-spirited, weak, poorly informed losers, the whole bunch of them.

      • Nana says:

He’ll run again purely to avoid jail.

  9. Rapunzel says:

Just noticed he’s wearing a red/white/blue striped tie, instead of his regular all red.

Someone trying to milk the flag propaganda.

  10. Becks1 says:

He’s so…..orange. I know that’s a weird takeaway, lol, but sometimes I look at pictures of him and its all I can think about.

As for 2024 – of course he’s going to run. That way he can continue to steal money from his supporters (sorry, “fundraise”) – and I do think the whole “disrupting the Republicans” is a big part of it. He’s pissed at them. WE are all mad at the Rs who aren’t more vocal about the need to concede, the transition, etc, but HE’S mad that they aren’t more vocal in SUPPORT of him. He’s mad that he cant find a better lawyer than Rudy Giuliani. He’s mad that states run by Republicans voted for Biden and he blames the Republicans in charge bc they should have worked harder to rig the election. etc. Over the weekend he was attacking my governor, Larry Hogan, a Republican who is taking the pandemic seriously, and I thought “oh this is about 2024.”

  11. Mignionette says:

Legislators should start getting together now. The second term rule should automatically be out once you’ve been voted out AND been impeached. That way both the house and the electorate would have spoken.

  12. Snuffles says:

If it gets him to concede and start the transition process (sign the papers and release the money Emily Murphy!!!!!!!!!), then I don’t give a shit.

Let him, he will still have deal with a few dozen court cases filed against him in New York alone. And I doubt he’ll live long enough to reach the 2024 election. Not that he cares. This is just his opportunity to grift his minions for money to pay off his enormous debts that are about to come due.

  13. Sean says:

He’s going to have to run before 2024 and I don’t mean another presidential campaign.

SDNY is coming for you Cheeto!

  14. Chica1971 says:

They could have voted to impeached, speak collectively about him thus diluting the Twitter attacks, capitalize on the fact that DJ knows nothing about government or governing. They could have done a hundred things to weaken him, now they have a dragon what is constantly breathing fire at them. Guess they don’t know GoT

  15. Karen says:

I think the SDNY will have something to say about that….

  16. Roo says:

Will this nightmare of a human ever go away? Do we think he’ll be tried for anything? Our democracy is toeing the line of collapse and if he somehow managed another presidency in 2024, that would be it for sure.

  17. Lizzie says:

I assume this is all a fund raising stunt. Once he is out of office the oversight in campaign contributions will no longer be overlooked.

  18. GuestwithCat says:

He’s unfortunately done so much damage. He’s set a really low standard of operating that I read that some are urging Biden to use Trump’s tactics of pushing the powers of the executive branch beyond their intended boundaries but within their legal limits to get around Mitch McConnell. For example appointing first-picks as temporary staff to fill permanent positions that McConnell and the Republicans may block Biden from filling with full time appointments. I can’t believe Trump and Moscow Mitch have sunk our presidency that low.

Trump’s not just playing golf and tweeting these last few days. Take a good look at the quieter news articles. He’s destroying a lot of things on the way out to make things hard for the Biden administration to fix or undo. Rudy’s waxworks meltdown is a mere distraction from the real outrages.

    • schmootc says:

I have mixed feelings about the appointment issue. If Mitch won’t even bring candidates up for a vote, what else is Biden supposed to do? Someone has to run those agencies! It didn’t used to be the norm for the majority leader to just blow off nominations. And they often were just largely passed unless someone was obviously egregious or horribly unqualified. Take Merrick Garland for example – McConnell’s behavior about his nomination was completely ridiculous and all the other Rs go along with him. Now, if he’d behave like he’s supposed to and give nominations a fair shake, then sure, the ‘acting’ business isn’t justified. But if he doesn’t, I don’t see another choice.

  19. Feebee says:

Crikey, do not adjust your sets….. is he trying out a new orange? Too much, bro!

Obviously we’re not going to be rid of this asshole until he’s dead or in prison. At this point I don’t care which comes first but I hope it’s at least on track.

  20. Christin says:

Two theories – Fundraising and a hopefully misguided attempt to avoid potential legal charges.

I heard the latter a couple of weeks ago, as an alleged leak from his minions who were “strategizing” with him.

    • Arpeggi says:

Fundraising is an excellent theory. He’s broke and needs the fundraising to continue pretending he has money

  21. jessamine says:

If he does announce, we’ll all be garnishing our holiday lockdown 2.0 cocktails with Mike Pence’s salty tears. Mmm, tasty.

    • schmootc says:

If he does announce, Pence should be grateful. He is a vacuum of charisma and running for President would be a monstrously huge waste of time and money for him. The cult-ies will never follow him.

      • jessamine says:

Yes, but Pence pretty much believes the presidency has been promised to him by god in return for his loyal trumpy service. I won’t mind if his cherished handmaid’s taleu-esque dream gets snatched out from under him.

  22. Jay (the Canadian one) says:

It’s probably just so he can continue his ego stroking rallies and whine to a sympathetic crowd how he’s the most aggrieved person in all of history.

  23. Amando says:

Hopefully he will be in jail well before then.

  24. ainsley says:

WHY is he SO ORANGE?? Seriously, pop over to Sephora and get some help finding your colour!! He doesn’t care about social distancing and essential services and all that anyway!

  25. Valerie says:

Okay, let him think that. He’s 74 and in poor mental and physical health. I doubt he’ll live to see 2024 or be mentally competent if he’s still kickin’.

  26. J ferber says:

Does this mean he’ll stop subverting a democratic election, stop locking in country destroying acts and start President Elect Biden’s rightful transition? You know what, donald? You’re a skeezy motherfucker.

  27. Leah says:

He actually thinks this country is going to go through four years of hell again? As if.

He’s insane. He belongs in prison with the rest of the grifters and enablers.

  28. Mary says:

Maybe hard to do from A NY State jail cell.
Ask Al Capone about what happens when they follow the money.

  29. Sigmund says:

I keep wondering when the Republican Party is going to chew off its own leg to save itself. Trumpism, in addition to being morally repugnant, is not going to benefit the party much longer, if it even still is. Any of these idiots with half a brain cell will cooperate with the authorities to get this orange asshat behind bars once he’s out of office, because he is just going to keep dragging the party down.
