Donald Trump’s personal Twitter account was finally permanently suspended

Trump Discussion with State Attorneys General on Protecting Consumers from Social Media Abuses

On Thursday, Twitter unlocked Donald Trump’s @realDonaldTrump account. He approached the unlocked account somewhat cautiously for a few hours, then he posted that bizarre and ominous video where he conceded the election (without saying the words “concede” or “I lost”) and yet still managed to threaten America with his violent, terrorist supporters. He posted two tweets on Friday afternoon, but by the evening, Twitter had removed them. Then something miraculous happened: Twitter decided to simply fully suspend his account. From Twitter’s support blog:

After close review of recent Tweets from the @realDonaldTrump account and the context around them — specifically how they are being received and interpreted on and off Twitter — we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence.

In the context of horrific events this week, we made it clear on Wednesday that additional violations of the Twitter Rules would potentially result in this very course of action. Our public interest framework exists to enable the public to hear from elected officials and world leaders directly. It is built on a principle that the people have a right to hold power to account in the open. However, we made it clear going back years that these accounts are not above our rules entirely and cannot use Twitter to incite violence, among other things. We will continue to be transparent around our policies and their enforcement.

On January 8, 2021, President Donald J. Trump Tweeted: “The 75,000,000 great American Patriots who voted for me, AMERICA FIRST, and MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, will have a GIANT VOICE long into the future. They will not be disrespected or treated unfairly in any way, shape or form!!!”

Shortly thereafter, the President Tweeted: “To all of those who have asked, I will not be going to the Inauguration on January 20th.”

Due to the ongoing tensions in the United States, and an uptick in the global conversation in regards to the people who violently stormed the Capitol on January 6, 2021, these two Tweets must be read in the context of broader events in the country and the ways in which the President’s statements can be mobilized by different audiences, including to incite violence, as well as in the context of the pattern of behavior from this account in recent weeks. After assessing the language in these Tweets against our Glorification of Violence policy, we have determined that these Tweets are in violation of the Glorification of Violence Policy and the user @realDonaldTrump should be immediately permanently suspended from the service.

[From Twitter]

I think Twitter made the right decision – when I saw the “American Patriots” tweet, it gave me a chill, because it is threatening and it’s meant to be a threat, and an incitement, a literal call to arms (shudder). From what I gather, Twitter has been monitoring chatter about plans for these domestic terrorists to plan another attack for the 17th. And, one would suspect, there are plans afoot for the inauguration.

Twitter’s suspension of Trump’s account came after Mark Zuckerberg decided – seemingly unilaterally – to suspend Trump from Facebook and Instagram (Trump isn’t much of a presence on IG, but still). Following Twitter’s crackdown, the other social networking sites fell like dominoes – Trump was soon banned from Spotify (lol), Snapchat, Shopify (lol), Reddit, Twitch, YouTube, TikTok and Pinterest (lol). The Nazis’ social media of choice is Parler these days, and suddenly Parler is cracking down too, and the Parler app has now been removed from Google Play and Apple.

After Trump’s Twitter account was suspended, he ran around like a chicken with his head cut off, trying to rage-tweet from other accounts – he tried ranting on the @Potus account, only Twitter deleted those tweets in a matter of minutes. He tried rage-tweeting from the Trump campaign account, and those tweets were deleted. He tried the campaign’s digital director’s account – a guy named Gary Coby – and Twitter suspended that account too. According to Politico, when Twitter suspended his original account, he went “ballistic” and he’s making big plans to create his own unhinged terrorist social media. His Republican enablers and fellow terrorists have been super-upset about his Twitter suspension too.

His advisors should have taken that toy away from him long ago. Bravo to Twitter. I feel sick when I see his rhetoric to his minions. Reminds me of the rhetoric Hitler used. And as one analyst stated: social media knows they had a responsibility to silence him, because they know they are responsible as well for what has happened.

    • Arpeggi says:

Bravo to Twitter? Meh, they should have done that after Charlottesville or the 1st time he retweeted white supremacist propaganda, at the very least they should have always flag the posts with blatant lies in them. Kicking him out after and attempted coup, 12 days before the end of his term is the bare minimum. They don’t deserve any cookies

      • Poisonella says:

Agree. Now all his enablers are dumping him? After all these years? They don’t deserve pats on the back. They encouraged a racist regime to grow, and gave its chief honcho a platform. If people had any sense they would boycott twitter.

    • Sandra says:

I mean, yes good that Twitter finally suspended him but they let him back on after he incited his cult to go and murder Congress. They let him back on to continue to encourage these psychos to go back and do it again. And to signal to them that they can attack the inauguration of Joe Biden by announcing that he wouldn’t be present. They should have never ever let him back on and they know it.
And Amazon shouldn’t be giving a 24 hour warning to Parler that they’re taking them down.

  2. STRIPE says:

Parler is also being kicked off of Amazon’s AWS today, which means they will have to rebuild the whole site. I also suspect they will not find a home on any of AWS peers like Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud, so the security on the site will most likely suffer. Hope these “Patriots” keep that in mind as they give the new Parler their personal info.

    • Edna says:

Wouldn’t be surprised if they got some Russian site to host them.

      • Linda says:

        Good point.

      • Athyrmose says:

CEO’s MIL is a Russian government official so it’s possible. Problem with this option for them is that they are then monitored by the NSA.

This would be the least of their problems with a migration to Russia, though.

    • Golly Gee says:

And 2 of the biggest sellers of MAGA merch, have been kicked off of Shopify, which was their sole platform.

      • Arpeggi says:

Fun fact: Shopify is Canadian. Talk about “putting America 1st”… (I know, I know, all the merch is made in China/Vietnam/India too)

      • Golly Gee says:

Yes, I was surprised when I read that. I never expect anything really big to be Canadian! LOL. Sadly someone was carrying a large Canadian flag during the riots as well. Not exactly the big and Canadian I wanted to see.

      • Ann says:

What about Amazon? I know you can buy Trump flags and those “F**k Your Feelings” flags they were flying, at least you could, there. No, not because I was looking for one….I wanted to make a point to a Trump supporter I know on FB. I was also really surprised when looking for some seed mixes for my garden to see just how many “Off The Grid” survivalist seed packages were for sale. It was wild.

      • Arpeggi says:

@Golly Gee, the Proud Boys are also Canadian and there were (still are?) a few around Jason Kenney’s entourage at some point. and we have Ezra Levant (how come he hasn’t been banned from Twitter yet?!). Gabriel Sohier-Chaput was in Charlottesville… We have to acknowledge we have our fairly large share of nazis if we want to deal with them.

That being said, Shopify isn’t a nazi-friendly platform, far from it, but I find it really funny to see those MAGA morons outsourcing to non-US companies and not realizing the irony

      • Golly Gee says:

@Arpeggi, Trump’s encouragement of white supremacists in the US has had a ripple effect around the world emboldening them everywhere including Canada. It’s sickening and frightening. I didn’t realize the Proud Boys were Canadian. Ugh. If they are charged with a crime wouldn’t they be barred from the US?

      • Jedi says:

@Golly Gee, the Proud Boys are also American at this point, but they got their start in Canada. Their founder is Canadian (Gavin McKinnes – nasty neo nazi scum) and he has been arrested a few times. I have no idea why the US keeps letting him in, unless he also has US citizenship or something.

      • Eleonora says:

@Golly Gee, might have been some idiot who thought the Canadian flag was a Trump flag of some kind

  3. mynameispearl says:

Pity Twitter/ facebook/insta etc didn’t do this 5 years ago for violating their guidelines, which he did, time and time again (people have been suspended from twitter for much less than Donald put out on a regular basis). If he had not had the same access to social media who knows if he would even have got close to the presidency .

    • notpretentious says:

I totally agree with you. A day late, a dollar short.

    • KhaoManee says:

I don’t think he could have won the Presidency without Twitter. Social media is a plague. I deleted my Instagram account yesterday. It was the last platform I was hanging into because I like pretty pictures, lol. I just don’t want any part of social media anymore. It’s caused too much damage to our country and our psyches.

      • Gina says:

He would never have won the presidency without Twitter.

Someone pointed out it’s no coincidence that Twitter and essentially all social media sites banned him right after the Dems took control of Congress. The Dems want limitations on all their power.

      • Golly Gee says:

@Gina. Exactly! Such hypocrites. Let’s see if the Dems actually do something to curb the scourge.

      • Regina Falangie says:

You are so right!! He should have been kicked off looooong ago!! At least his tweets are public record and can be used against him.

I’m so sick of Facebook and all it represents. Delete Facebook: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=35Se9ZgoSSw

    • JanetDR says:

Yes, he almost immediately was lying on it and should have been kicked off right away. There was enough to impeach him with as soon as he was inaugurated as well, but no one was listening to me about that!

  4. Esmom says:

A POTUS who cares more about his Twitter account than Covid deaths, than Capitol mayhem and death, than economic devastation. Not surprising, I know, but it still feels shocking that he is more craven, more evil, more selfish than we have been screaming about for five years.

Every minute of every day that goes by and he is still in office only endangers our country more. I am terrified that the insurrection will be swept away by this new distraction, as Don Junior and other bad actors are trying to make happen. And if one more GOP official pronounces that impeachment would hinder unity, I may run screaming into the street. So falsely, incessantly, claiming an election was stolen was somehow helping unity? I can’t.

I felt like momentum was building to finally break the Trump spell but now I’m not so sure anymore.

    • Darla says:

If they had gotten their hands on Pence and hanged him as they wanted to do, that would have broken the spell. As it is the media in the first dire days and hours posted pictures of idiots in clown hats, and so the real dangers, the ex military guys with zip tie plastic handcuffs, bombs, bear spray, and bullets, went unnoticed too long. And now the Republican party is already on their way to normalize this. Let’s just let it go for unity’s sake. And that condemns us to a second attempt and a third and so on, and eventually one of them will succeed.

      • Rapunzel says:

Killing Pence wouldn’t break the spell over the true loonies. They’d still justify and excuse.

We need a national cult deprogramming.

      • Digital Unicorn says:

Yeah they built that rig with the noose for a reason, they were looking for Pence, Pelosi and Harris for a reason – not just to take hostage but they were people in that group who were fully prepared to kill and it wasn’t just the hired mercs. Listening to the rednecks talking to the press it was clear they wanted to hurt anyone they could find in that building – everyone who was inside that day were extremely lucky.

And yeah I think Capitol law enforcement was in on it and yeah they will try again to take out the line of succession before Biden and Harris are sworn in.

If Pence has any sense of self preservation he will invoke the 25th – Trump wants him dead, simple as.

      • Mabs A'Mabbin says:

They are joyous about what happened. Killing Pence would only embolden them. I’ve been reading one of their leader’s (praying medic) call to arms. They don’t care about protesting and certainly not ‘delivering messages.’ They want war. They want bullets flying. They want Washington on fire. I’ve never read so much evil hate, these people need to be incarcerated.

The things they’re saying and planning prove terrorist plots for Washington and other American cities. They are planning a civil war. I have no idea why our security agencies and military aren’t all over it. And Washington and Capital security claiming to have been blindsided by the riot is complete bullshit because they’ve been planning it for weeks, publicly planning.

      • Darla says:

Mabs that’s horrifying. I am dreading the week of the inauguration, and I am very worried about state capitals.

      • Golly Gee says:

@mabs, police found containers with a mixture of melted Styrofoam and gasoline. Styrofoam has the effect of sticking to whatever it hits once the container explodes increasing the rate of incineration. About a block away they also found a pick-up truck, the back of which was filled with guns and bombs.

    • Gina says:

The same POTUS that is significantly mentally ill and is driven by that illness.

    • Golly Gee says:

And like a bloody hydra, in case force doesn’t work, he’s still looking to change the vote! This WaPo article titled “New U.S. attorney in Atlanta brings in assistants who worked on election-fraud issues, raising fears of political interference,” is chilling by its insidiousness and relentlessness. The previous US attorney suddenly and unexpectedly stepped down and instead of his deputy taking over which is what usually happens, he was instead immediately replaced by a Trump minion. This just happened this week.

    • Traveler says:

This is the typical republican strategy…………….wait long enough until the dust settles, by then there is another crisis to distract from the current crisis, then cry unity and for the good of the country bullsh!t. There can be no unity until there is justice, simple as that. We can’t simply reboot and carry on from a damn attempted coup; especially since a more successful one is likely down the pike (and that is no longer some far-fetched conspiracy theory).
I’ve frantically emailed Speaker Pelosi twice and my state reps saying just this. No unity without justice! I don’t do social media and don’t know how else to get opinions out there loud and clear.

  5. Nopity Nope says:

A lot of people are also getting a Cloud Hosting 101 crash course right now, thanks to AWS booting Parler from their services. I’m pretty sure MSFT Azure and Google Cloud are all “it’s no from me, dawg” so those Parlots will quickly run out of legit cloud hosting platform options. If you post on that trash heap of a website, and they end up being hosted by a Russian cloud services provider, well…you get what you get.

  6. GR says:

“he’s making big plans to create his own unhinged terrorist social media”
I really look forward to watching Rudy and Jared try to establish a new social media platform.

    • B n A fn says:

Everything that that monster touches turned to dust. I remembers 45’s university, his Casinos, his news paper, his football team, his water, his steaks, ect ect, he fails at everything. Lots of us who posts here regularly has been saying for years it’s not going to end well. This man is a con artist who takes advantage of the disadvantage. His father was arrested at a KKK rally. 45 was fined by the NYS housing authority for denying black and brown people from renting in his building. His niece wrote a book and told everyone exactly who he is, he has no conscience, he’s vacant and rotten inside. I’m wondering if his sheep’s are ashamed of themselves for voting for this evil, lying snake oil salesman, just wondering.

    • (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

They want to create a TV network. They’ve been saying this the last few years. They should NEVER be allowed a broadcasting license. OANN, Newsmark, and Faux ALSO need to have their licenses pulled for contributing to this seditious insurrection.

  7. Darla says:

this has all been building to a crescendo with me. It takes me time to process traumatic events. Anyway, it finally came together for me after reading a lot of reporting, among the best is a WAPO report “inside the capital siege” and my god you have to read it. We came literally about 60 seconds or less from having half of the Senate executed. (there’s one black cop who almost definitely prevented it by diverting them at high risk to his own life and he should receive a literal medal from President Biden) And they were looking for Pelosi and Pence. They were going to take out the line of succession. And I also realized as I’m sure everyone who processes trauma better already has; the heads of the Capital Police were in on it and they must have colluded with Trump. And Trump made a dead serious attempt at a literal coup. We could, right now, be living under dictator trump. We came so close. And they are planning on Parler and other places their next attack. Trump needs to be prosecuted. It’s imperative.

    • KhaoManee says:

I honestly feel like I cannot believe we are all just going about our daily lives while a madman tries to seize control of our country. I want to do something about it but I feel totally helpless. I think many people (Dem and Rep) aren’t getting how close we came to utter ruin. Maybe it takes time for some people to process like you said, Darla.

      • AMAyson1977 says:

I have read so much in the last 5 days, (too much for my own good, to be honest) but I somehow missed this article. Am reading now and I have chills. Lady G and the rest of the a$$holes who are trying to rug-sweep this can sit ALL THE WAY DOWN and shut the FU*K UP with their nonsense about “moving on.” No. There is no “moving on.” He ordered this violence, reveled in the uprising, and had no remorse. He is an empty, evil monster and impeachment is too good for him, but it’s what we have so it will do. I am furious at every single person who enabled, incited, carried out or is attempting to minimize and excuse this attempted overthrown of our government.

    • Rapunzel says:

Darla- I also read that Trump wanted to call in the national guard to protect the rioters! The more details coming out, the worse it looks for Trump.

I suspect this will truly be what destroys him. Especially if there is more violence on inauguration day.

And I have neighbors who still support him. Which terrifies me.

      • Darla says:

I have cousins who actually posted they were leaving facebook and then posted links to their parler accounts! I went and peeped on one of them and I seriously did not know they were THAT crazy. I never see them, but it’s still so crazy to me. I will make sure I never do see them too, believe me. Oh and to be clear, you bet I scoured every single picture I found on Twitter, and I was looking for anyone I recognized and would have reported them without hesitation. And I still will in the future. It’s white people like me who know these clowns and we need to be on the lookout for any we can identify for the FBI. Oh yes.

    • Noodle says:

@darla, I’m not sure if you’re on Twitter, but this guy is a wonderful follow. He’s been doing the investigative work to identify the truly malicious men who were there to cause bodily harm. The nitwits were a distraction from these military/paramilitary “zip tie” guys. He is responsible for identifying the one Lt Col they know about, and has sent his ID of the other main “zip tie” guy (whose face was completely covered) to the FBI. He needs an award.

      https://mobile.twitter.com/jsrailton/status/1347011413101998080

      • Darla says:

I am on Twitter Noodle, thank you I will follow the account!

      • (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

There were quite a few accounts (like @angrystaffer and @TheRealHoarse) who were also putting this out, and people were IDing and @-ing the FBI to ID these b@stards. I hope each and every one spends at least the next 10 yrs of their lives in a federal pen. for this insurrection.

Any republiTHUG who is *NOW* calling for “unity” to “move forward” is on the targeted list for their next election. NO &*^%$ WAY! The only way to get rid of a cancer is to cut/vote it OUT!

      • Christin says:

I didn’t think they would ever be able to ID the completely masked zip tie guy, but was so glad to be wrong. He is allegedly a guy from Nashville.

Every single person should be charged – no matter what age they were. We have at least two people in our region (including an elderly doctor) who bragged about attending & lining up people to go. They did local TV interviews on the afternoon of the attempted coup. They had no shame. Now they are claiming that people are mad and boycotting their businesses. I imagine the feds will want a word with them, too.

      • Eleonora says:

Boycotting Trump supporters is one of the best ways. Money remains all important and when they lose that, they get slowed down in their craziness

    • Nic919 says:

I read the WaPo article and it is chilling. They talk to McConnell aides among others and they heard the insurrectionists chant “Nancy” at one point. And Northam the governor of Virginia states how when he spoke to Pelosi she said they could hear glass breaking. The congress people and senators were under siege and if a few more things had gone the wrong way it could have been worse. Ex military had zip ties with them so they were looking for hostages. And the orange maniac set this up. It is no coincidence that the 2, 3 and 4 in line to presidential succession were all in the same building but yet the national guard didn’t instantly respond. And Pence needs to remember that he was ignored by the WH while this was happening.

A buzzfeed article from one of the black Capitol officers is also scary too. He was called racial epithets nonstop that day and he said many in the crowd were cops showing badges but part of the mob.

      • Darla says:

Oh I read that article too Nic, I cried reading it.

      • Noodle says:

@nic19, and they knew exactly how to get to key offices that are hard to find for a normal person. Like, they found Pelosi and Clyburn’s offices awfully quickly for non-Capitol employees.

      • windyriver says:

A man has been arrested who sent messages on SM about shooting Pelosi on live TV. He had assault weapons and multiple rounds of ammunition in his trailer. Whether or not he was part of an organized plan, deaths of Pelosi and others were a real possibility.

One of the articles in either the WaPo or NYT quoted a rioter saying one of the police had given them directions to Schumer’s office, though they couldn’t find it.

      • Golly Gee says:

@noodle: and walked away with sensitive national security data!

    • Golly Gee says:

YES, a literal coup! While homegrown experts are saying this technically wasn’t a coup because it wasn’t conducted by the military, that’s exactly how it’s been described by international security experts interviewed by Business Insider in an article titled “Some among America’s military allies believe Trump deliberately attempted a coup and may have had help from federal law-enforcement officials”.

  8. Rapunzel says:

The ban is overdue. But a little like taking away an arsonist’s gas can after they’ve set the building on fire.

    The damage is done. Period.

  9. KhaoManee says:

I love that he’s banned from Pintrest. Why is an attack planned for the 17th? Also, I’m MORE scared now that he can’t tweet. At least we could kind of keep tabs on him. Now there is this eerie silence. Like, what is he doing if he can’t tweet?

    • Darla says:

Khao that Pinterest ban was the only humor I could find in all this, and I can usually find humor in just about anything. WTF was Trump doing on Pinterest? The banality of evil, there you go.

    • Noodle says:

From what I read, an attack is planned for the 17th because Q is the 17th letter of the alphabet. I’m serious. They are so dedicated to this QAnon sham they are going to commit sedition.

      • KhaoManee says:

Thanks, Noodle! I should have guessed that on my own…makes perfect sense! Lol
@Darla, I don’t know whether to laugh or cry anymore…It’s all so absurd and appalling.

      • Swack says:

I’ve heard its planned for the 19th. Regardless whatever day it is planned I hope everyone is on high alert in DC and other places so that this doesn’t happen again.

    • Esmom says:

Yeah, I agree that as much as we hated having a Tweeter in Chief, it is unsettling not to know what his addled mind is conjuring up now. Someone on Twitter said it was like seeing a shark’s fin disappear under water. You know he’s right there but you have no idea where he’ll attack.

I’m still stunned that he wasn’t immediately removed. My only tiny bit of consolation is hearing that Pence put the 25th Amendment back on the table after at first saying he wasn’t going to invoke it. I can’t believe he is waiting, after the reports of people literally wanting to execute him on Trump’s orders. And I can’t believe I just typed that.

      • KhaoManee says:

The shark analogy is dead on. That’s exactly how I feel.

      • Golly Gee says:

yup. They were chanting Mike Pence! Mike Pence! outside the chamber doors.

      • Christin says:

Apparently his political life is more important than his own life and that of his wife and child. Because they all were in grave danger.

I think he’s playing both sides – not wanting to enrage the already demented 1/4 of our country, and also trying to look a smidge responsible. 25th should have been done before the rooster crowed the following morning, IMO.

      • Traveler says:

Yeah, what are they waiting for – a successful attempt?
Completely incompetent and short sighted to believe it won’t happen again. Maybe that is the point, distract until another attempt can be better planned.
The capital police were in on it, military veterans were in on it, members of congress supported it, how much of the military is willing to go along?
There needs to be a strong, decisive, take no bullsh!t response.

    • Jennifer says:

That Pinterest banned him is just delicious. Totally agree.

  10. Wiglet Watcher says:

Parler never cracked down and that’s why amazon web platform stopped carrying them. And both Apple and google stopped supporting the app for their products.

Parler said they would deploy a temporary task force to moderate some chats, but it was a lot of BS and Apple said no thanks.
Parler fully supports this nonsense and the CEO makes that clear in his statements.

    • Darla says:

Lin Wood was on Parler calling for the current VP’s execution. I mean, for god sakes

      • Nic919 says:

Kathy Griffin got way more hell from the secret service and FBI for a fake magazine cover meanwhile this guy is making actual death threats…. why isn’t this guy being brought in for questions?

      • Wiglet Watcher says:

        Nic
It’s sobering to see this all play out. The president installed loyalists which then installed loyalists so that the president can have unchecked power. Biden needs to drain the swamp as they say.

It’s good at least to see so many trump rats jumping ship. They’re not leaving because of trumps behavior. It’s legal strategy to distance because charges and backlash is coming.

      • Swack says:

Read where the comment on Parler by Lin Wood was removed. Wonder what the Trumpistas think of that.

      • Nina Simone says:

Why hasn’t Lin wood been disbarred ?

Plus Rudy “trial by combat” Giuliani

      • Christin says:

@Nina – Arrested is more like it. Could anyone else get away with that?

      • (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

Nic, that was one of my first thoughts after reading his tweet, too. Her career was literally dead in the water for what…2 yrs? Over a bad, tasteless “joke’ (which of course, the male photog. got NO blow-back on). But the FBI and SS crawled over, under, and inside her life.

Lin Wood, certifiable in my view, was still putting out violent crap. He also called for the death of …damn, I can’t think of the name… there’s just too much NEW horror coming in too quickly to retain some of the older (by days!!) horror.

      • windyriver says:

On Friday in DC, his pal Sidney Powell had a 1.3 Billion dollar lawsuit dropped on her by Dominion in a 124 page complaint. Meanwhile, lawyers in Detroit have asked a Federal judge to refer Powell and her team for disbarment, and “to levy a financial penalty…at least equivalent to the amount of money that Powell and her team have raised to fund their post-election lawsuits.”

If you haven’t had a chance, listen to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s video. I do NOT like him at all (and in all honesty, I have to say I’ve only been able to watch the first half of it (it’s long, about 7 1/2 min)), but DAMN if he’s not right. He likens what happened on the 6th to Kristallnacht.

      • windyriver says:

Thank you for this. In the second half he comes down hard on the politicians who enabled Trump. He’s far from my favorite person, but if he influences even a few people, he will have done good.

“Patriotism means to stand by the country. It does not mean to stand by the President.” Original quote by Teddy Roosevelt.

It’s fascinating to hear him discuss the impact on his own family, and other citizens, of being associated with the WWII atrocities perpetrated by their countries, even if they took no active part but stood by and let it happen. Very well balanced to include that bit of compassion/understanding towards people or the families of people who were swept up in the cult of MAGA, but not the primary planners or instigators. The whole thing was really well done.

Here in Europe I was going to sleep when I saw the news headlines and I ignored them because I thought they were clickbait for some kind of an upcoming movie.

    • Wiglet Watcher says:

They’re saying this was a prelude to more. And judging from how all major social media platforms are banning or being removed for magats… there’s something big brewing that everyone wants to prevent.
They want a civil war. To keep a baby fisted, dementia riddled crybaby in power because he is a simple mind and they can relate.

This feels like one of those dark times you read about in history books, but you never think it could happen again because people are civil and we grow as a society.
But it’s just a reminder some people are so bored in their lives with so much hate and entitlement they’ll latch onto anything to feel apart of something. Those MAGA snowflakes need to be told they’re special.

      • Noodle says:

@wiglet, From a psychological perspective, the pandemic plays a role here too. Many of them have lost their jobs, and ironically, have less to lose. That lack of security makes them even more prone to holding fast to someone who makes promises and ensures their superiority. I am not sure Trump would have been THIS successful if not for Covid.

  13. Kealeen says:

I worry that this will just make him more dangerous. By suspending him in the last weeks of his time in office, Twitter and Facebook are just bringing him closer to having nothing to lose. Plus, why weren’t they this concerned when all the women in Congress were getting constant harassment and threats via social media?

    • KhaoManee says:

I agree. It seems like too little too late.

i agree but i think he already has nothing to lose and everyone’s been handling him with kids gloves. Took a coup i guess to finally put him in time out.

    • Josie Bean says:

Agree. Because Trump is so stupid, he will hang himself with his rhetoric.

    • (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

Because it’s NOT about “halting hate speech”. It’s MUCH MORE about the fact that the Dems are in power and are for breaking up their power, esp. Facebook and Google. THIS is what it’s more about.

      • Golly Gee says:

Unless lobbyists with a very deep pockets grease some palms. I will be surprised if any action is taken against Facebook or Google. But I dearly hope.

  15. Rapunzel says:

The only part of this that gives me pleasure is that Trump’s own supporters will probably be what sends him to jail. Those arrested are all saying Trump invited them. The Lt. Col with the zip ties for example said he assumed he was free to roam the Capitol because the president invited his supporters.

In a real trial, this testimony will sink him. Badly.

And one guy also said he wasn’t trespassing because the police held the door open for them.

It might be shutting the barn door after the cow’s gotten out, but there has to be a response. Ignoring sedition is not acceptable. We don’t have time to say “what about this or that.” Shutting off his primary sources of lie-spreading won’t solve all the problems, but it will solve some.

  17. Linda says:

Trump needs to be physically removed from the White House and instead of being afraid of the consequences, the government leaders should prepare for it. After this latest event there are far fewer people that would participate in a rebellion. The ones that do are professional rabble rousers and trouble makers. Draw them out, then arrest them.

    • (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

Only “problem” is half the “govt leaders” were PARTNERS *IN* THIS SEDITIOUS COUP!! PARTNERS! Lending credibility and stirring up their constituents. THEY *ALL* NEED TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE.

    • Golly Gee says:

There’s apparently a group of Secret Service agents on Twitter trying to figure out how to handle it if Trump won’t leave! LOL. They’ve never been trained for this particular mission.

      • Indywom says:

It doesn’t matter if he physically leaves the WH. On the 20th, he will no longer have any power. Biden can run the country from anywhere. Trump will eventually leave the WH for a round of golf and then he can be arrested for trespassing as he tries to come back.

  18. Lightpurple says:

    Has he tried Tumblr? Etsy?

There are members of Congress who have expressed more dismay over Trump losing his Twitter account than they did for the siege of the Capitol and the murder of a Capitol Police officer. Trump still has access to numerous government websites and publications and a Press Secretary. He has not been silenced. His First Amendment rights have not been infringed. Meanwhile, he has refused to lower federal flags to honor the officer who was murdered by his thugs and he has not spoken to the Vice President

    • Digital Unicorn says:

The fact that the working relationship between the President and their VP has broken down should worry people – it tells us that Dump is going to try a coup again, he is going to get his goons to go after the line of Presidential succession again. 19. Edna says:

It’s 5 years too late, but it’s better than nothing. Social media helped facilitate this mess and I hope there will be congressional hearings and some regulation on how they operate in the future.

Nothing about what happened surprises me or anyone I know. We all saw it coming. The chickens have finally come home to roost. The Republicans have fed this beast for years and finally lost control of the monster they created. It’s not surprising that as society keeps trying to inch forward there will always be push back to that change. The BLM protests, election results triggered people and Trump was able to take advantage. The next few weeks will probably see even more craziness and perhaps violence.

  20. Delphine says:

  21. Alexandria says:

No doubts in my head that social media and television caused America to come to this state. Facebook and Twitter should claim responsibility, start anew and make concrete PLANS to suppress inflammatory speech. When is white terrorism going to be treated seriously? That and the slow denigration of the education system and mistrust of science made it come to this.

I just hope more sane and diverse Americans start to become more involved in politics from the grassroots level to fix this. The infiltration of white supremacists and terrorists into the defence and police departments also need to be fixed…please take care and all the best.

    • KhaoManee says:

Fox news also bears a huge amount of responsibility for indoctrinating these people into the Cult of MAGA.

  22. Midnight@theOasis says:

“Why wasn’t there more of a police presence at the Klan rally. Oh, they had to go home and change their clothes.”

I have little faith in law enforcement doing their jobs and actually holding these domestic terrorists accountable. It’s like asking the fox to guard the hen house. One of the reasons there’s so much distrust in the black community for police is because for generations police were active members of the Klan. Police by day, Klansmen by night. It carries over to today and it’s why so many BLM protestors were adamant about police reform. Far too many law enforcement and military personnel are indoctrinated in white supremacy and are big time MAGAts. Many were present and participated in the attempted coup on Tuesday. Black Capitol Hill police officers will tell you many of their white coworkers support and voted for Trump. And those same black Capitol Hill police officers were abused and beaten during the coup attempt. Remember that many police unions actively supported and endorsed Trump during the campaign. Maybe now at least people will open their eyes and take a closer look at who we have policing us and why the need for change.

    • Edna says:

Already the “let’s unite and move on” folks are loud and active. If what happened is allowed to pass with no ramifications, then there is no hope for moving forward.

    • KhaoManee says:

Well said. The police departments in this country need to be torn down and completely rebuilt. The good cops are quitting because they can’t do their job without Nazis and Klan members disguised as police are threatening them. What’s left is the bad cops and a whole lot of militarized equipment. Defund the police.

We already KNOW that about a dozen OR MORE police (retired AND active) as well as NYFD (retired AND active) were ID’d in the Mob storming the Capitol. As the days pass, we will be finding about A LOT MORE L.E.Os, in MANY MORE states, who were there, I’m sure!

    • Truthiness says:

Merrick Garland is coming. He prosecuted the Oklahoma City bombing and helped with the Unabomber. The person who prosecuted the Boston marathon bombing is on his team too. 2 big cases where people got the death penalty. DOJ knows who their new bosses are. Biden nominated people with civil rights experience too.

  23. Sean says:

This all well and good but I feel it may be too late. He should have been banned from social media years ago for his “birtherism” nonsense. But they let him continue because his rhetoric was bringing in new users, clicks, site views, etc.

Zuckerberg, etc accepted payment in Rubles to knowingly allow Russian trolls to spread disinformation on their platforms.

Media outlets entertained Trump, his enablers and sycophants instead of calling them out or not giving them airtime because they brought ratings.

When Trump admitted to firing James Comey over the Russian/Michael Flynn probe, no action was taken.

When Andrew McCabe implored the cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment, they did nothing. Trump discovered this and fired him.

When Trump started firing career government employees and replacing them with his own or just leaving those positions unfulfilled, no eyebrows were raised.

When Trump fired Deputy AG Sally Yates because she blocked an unconstitutional ban on Muslims, objections were made but no action was taken.

When Trump fired AG Jeff Sessions for recusing himself from overseeing the Mueller investigation and appointed Bill Barr in his place, no eyebrows were raised.

When subpoenas were issued by Mueller’s team were ignored, no one was arrested or fined until they were forced to comply.

When Mueller’s report documented more than 100 connections between Trump’s campaign and Russian agents in addition to 10 instances of obstruction of justice, no action was taken.

When Trump was impeached for extorting one of our allies, the Senate failed to remove him from office when he was impeached.

When he and his enablers allowed and made threats of their own against those who testified during the impeachment trial, no action was taken.

I could go on but at what should have been every checkpoint, he, his enablers and followers were allowed to pass GO! Because someone, many corporations and people were benefitting financially and popularity-wise.

And so here we are. The horses have escaped from the barn and now we want to close the barn doors?

For the past 5 years, expects, scholars and people who were paying attention were sounding the alarm. Most did not heed the call or do their job. And so here we are.

When you allow people to get away with abhorrent behavior and breaking laws without actual consequences, they will continue and escalate until they reach the top or something stops them.

    • Edna says:

Well said. None of this should surprise anyone. Trump was allowed to do as he pleased with no checks or balances as long as it benefited big business and Congressional Republicans. And now here we are.

      • Sean says:

What’s worse Edna, Trump should have been in prison long before 2015. His casinos broke countless money laundering laws in the 980s/90s, his properties have been laundering mob (both Italian and Russian) money since the 1980s, he defrauded people with his businesses and “university”.

But people covered for him. Because they benefitted from his celebrity or connections. That includes the Clintons and other top Democrats. Remember, he was a big donor for the Democratic party until 2013-2015 or so.

That being said, what happened last Wednesday is at the feet of Republicans and big business who enabled and promoted his lies because they were reaping benefits of their own.

      • Nic919 says:

@Sean part of the reason why Hillary knew how he would behave is because she had known him for years. They all knew what he could do.

But the GOP caved so bad when he was abusing executive power that this is all on them. They could have removed him last year. They did not.

      • Sean says:

@Nic919 agreed. From 2015 onward, the Republicans own this mess.

How many public servants who voted/considered themselves Republicans (Comey, McCabe, Mueller, Brennan, Nance) raised the alarm about Trump only to have Rs in Congress/Senate overlook it just so they could fatten their pockets and get votes?

    • Exactly says:

  24. Elizabeth says:

Jack Dorsey is a POS. He allowed Trump and others to spread total lies for years leading up to this moment and even now he didn’t want to ban Trump. He only relented after internal pressure. The bottom line is that Trump made money for Jack Dorsey. His hatred and violence were profitable for Jack Dorsey. Same with Zuckerberg, that out-of-touch self-absorbed frat-bro type. And our leaders have passively and feebly allowed their monopolies and their promotion of propaganda and alternative facts. Our country is a wreck.

  25. BlueSky says:

A white mob killed a white police officer. Several others were killed. Pence, Pelosi, Schumer could have been killed. The capital police were outnumbered but yeah, GOP, let’s talk about how big mad you are that Kim Jong Orange was kicked off social media.

  26. Megs says:

I am beyond offended how they are calling these terrorists “patriots”, they removed the American flag at the capital and replaced it with a Trump flag. But sure, Kaepernick disrespected the American flag while kneeling. Ok. Also, why isn’t more being said about how they killed a cop? Isn’t this the party of supporting blue lives? No? It’s almost as if it was just a diversion from BLM. I’m shocked.

  27. EllenOlenska says:

I’m not seeing a lot of remorse out of the “but my taxes” republicans who don’t go around wearing MAGAhats. McConnell ( and I don’t include him in that bunch) has also distributed a strategy that basically outlines how the senate can avoid voting on impeachment before the inauguration. If we get thru inauguration unscathed the supposed moderate republicans will sweep this under the rug as fast as they can. My few moderate republican friends are just laying low. They’ll be back. And those seven senators who still dog whistled about fair elections in their “concession to not contest speeches?” They need to be bleeped every time the word conspiracy comes out of their mouths.

  28. Nina Simone says:

A Capitol police officer just committed suicide. The ones that weren’t in on the coup and taking selfies went through so much trauma on Weds. particularly the black ones. I pray for their healing.

The FBI has also warned about white supremacists Infiltrating police departments across the country. Black people have known for generations. Many of the insurrectionists were active duty police. Some even flashed their badges at Capitol Hill police.
The coup was an inside job. Period. Perpetuated by many of our govt agencies. As an American, I have chills thinking about it – but we must be clear eyed about it and hold accountable the conspirators within our government. in Dec, we were suspicious about Trump installing loyalists in the pentagon and dept of defense. Now we know why. They ensured Capitol police were little harmed on weds and delayed the national guard. Trump also had a meeting with the proud boys last month. It’s all beginning to add up and he must be removed and prosecuted for high treason.

    Imagine if they succeeded ?!

    • LightPurple says:

There are hundreds of people assigned to this in DOJ and Merrick Garlard is coming. We will not have to tolerate people in high positions using the both sides language very soon.

    • Golly Gee says:

I read that he was not on duty that day.

      • Nina Simone says:

@coco thank you. I will use that term going forward.

And Mmm If he wasn’t on duty. Could he have known what was impending? Are internal investigations ongoing and were closing in? We will wait and see

      • Golly Gee says:

Just wanted to edit that what I read was wrong. He was on duty. Here’s a comment about him from Nancy Pelosi. “Officer Liebengood was a patriot who dedicated his life to defending the Capitol and protecting all who serve, work in, and visit this temple of our Democracy,” Pelosi said. “His passing is a great tragedy that compounds the horror of this past week.”

    • Indywom says:

I have to wonder if some of the congressmen or senators were in on it too. All of their social media accounts and cell phone records need to be checked.

    • Nina Simone says:

Also wanted to add a couple of days ago European Intelligence sources straight up said they had intelligence that Trump himself and his people planned this coup.

  29. Coco says:

If Mike Pence is scared of assassination right now, he should invoke the 25th. If he becomes President, he will be given lifetime access to Secret service protection, instead of six months’ worth as outgoing VP. But Mike Pence is not only a craven hypocrite, he’s a bit of a moron.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is a serial sex offender.

His hate crimes against women are not erased by him chiming in with the received wisdom that Donald Trump is a fascist.

      • Jaded says:

Arnie has assaulted at least 6 women, probably many more who haven’t come forward. Everything from grabbing their breasts and buttocks to forcefully trying to take a woman’s bathing suit off in an elevator to pulling a woman onto his lap and asking her whether a “certain sexual act had ever been performed on her”.

He had affairs with other women frequently during his marriage and fathered a son with his housekeeper.

Where was his honesty, empathy and perspective then?

      • windyriver says:

Yes, Schwarzeneggar is a deeply flawed and even disgusting person, as other men have been before him who have made more significant contributions. (One example: 20 miles down the road from me is the house where Charles Lindbergh lived; he who helped establish modern commercial aviation; was later a Nazi sympathizer; and who also had seven additional children in three secret families, by three mothers, two of whom were sisters.)

But it’s a well done video, from someone who’s a) Republican, b) has serious macho credentials, and c) at this point looks a lot like the people who participated in the attack on the Capitol. Sounds to me, especially early on, that it’s directed at the “sheep” who are part of the movement; it’s unlikely to influence the hard core instigators and planners. If it makes any of those people reconsider what they’ve become part of, it will be valuable. I also like how clear he is that fellow Republicans have been completely spineless and must be held accountable.

On another, serious note – there’s a Twitter comment below the video that references Clarence Thomas’ wife being questioned by the FBI for possibly being part of the planning for the Capitol attack. Anyone have more information?

All I can do is avoid the subject in our email communications because I won’t let Trump come between my sister and me.
