Dr. Jill Biden wore Jonathan Cohen for the Bidens’ arrival in DC: stunning?

One of the things I didn’t even think to look forward to: covering First Lady fashion without worrying about the fascism and racism of the First Family. Over the years, I did talk, here and there, about what Melania Trump wore. But I hated it! It will be so nice to cover Dr. Jill Biden’s fashion. I always thought she dressed like a teacher, and that’s true, but she also genuinely has style.

Case in point: for the Bidens’ arrival in Washington yesterday afternoon, and their public event in the evening, Dr. Jill chose a spectacular ensemble. She wore this stunning Jonathan Cohen coat in a vibrant purple, with a velvet belt-tie. Cohen is an American designer, based in New York, and this is from his yet-to-be-shown Fall 2021 collection. Meaning, Dr. Jill’s stylist thought to ask some small, independent American designers if she could buy/borrow some pieces for this week. The mask is from Cohen too, and her clutch is by Tyler Ellis. Jimmy Choo pumps!

By all accounts, Dr. Jill will try to go back to teaching at a local community college, but I just think in-person school is having a rough time at the moment. Maybe she’ll go back to teaching in the fall semester. Which leaves Dr. Jill time to fix some stuff as First Lady. There are already big appeals being made to Dr. Jill – people are desperate for her to fix Jacqueline Kennedy’s Rose Garden. Melania Trump ripped out the Kennedy Rose Garden and replaced it with a dull, colorless, cemetery-looking muted garden. We were calling it Melania’s White Power garden.

I’m also including photos from the Bidens and the Harris-Emhoffs’ memorial to the 400,000 souls who have passed away from the coronavirus. (We covered that story separately.)

Its a shame that Melania was so unlikeable because i truly liked her style,i think there had been a huge gap in having a Flotus who actually had a love of fashion. Not since Nancy Reagan.

    • Chica1971 says:

Sorry Melanie didn’t have style. She just wore Uber expensive pieces with 6 inch heels playing supermodel.

    • Seraphina says:

Noki, I too (as much as do not have liking for her as a person or FLOTUS) liked to see what she would wear. But she was stiff and had no ease to her walk. Reportedly, her stepdaughter calls her “The Statue” 😂🤣

    • Gab says:

Agree. Also, to be fair, she did not actually pull out the rose bushes. She pulled out some other trees, the rose bushes that had died were replaced with other rose bushes over the course of several administrations:

    • Qzie says:

I personally thought Michelle Obama had phenomenal style–fresh, current, approachable and fashion-forward. She crushed it so many times and just looked gorgeous.

Also, Melania’s wigs ruined many a good outfit. I have to say that today her coat and wig/hair looked quite good. Trump turned up his Cheeto-ness to 11, which is so odd considering how critical he is of other people’s looks that he doesn’t see how orange/weirdly auburn he looks and that it apparently seems like a good look to him. Whatever. ByeDon.

    • coolspray says:

Agreed! I did quite enjoy some of her looks (well, except for the one jacket that shall not be named).

      • phaedra says:

After the “I Really Don’t Care Do U” jacket, Putin’s Melaniabot 2.0’s fashion became as irrelevant as Ava Hitler’s. She is a grotesque parody of womanhood, of personhood. It’s like wondering who made Satan’s cape.

  2. Jellybean says:

I don’t care what she wears. She is there, that is all that matters.

  3. Jillian says:

That purple is gorgeous on Dr Biden, Kamala’s coat is great too. I’m just so happy to see some decent people in the White House today, and I’m especially proud to be represented by these women

    • BW says:

You said what I was going to say. Thank you.

    • Esmom says:

Yes, they both look amazing and seeing both couples showing genuine respect and compassion is just a balm after the years of chaos and cruelty we have endured.

    • Heather G says:

Yes, both look very elegant and gorgeous! I think Kamala’s coat is Max Mara’s Manuela…a coat that I have been wanting for years now! So iconic. It’s just pricey, a little more than I can spend. But a timeless coat to last a lifetime!!! I think Duchess Meghan has one too that looks fab on her!

  4. Katie says:

    Love Kamala’s style

    • Darla says:

Yes, me too, and I LOVE that camel coat. Dr. Jill’s style is not mine, but I always admire how she looks. She always looks amazing.

  5. LightPurple says:

That color is so yummy! So beautiful. Welcome, Dr. First Lady Biden.

  6. SarahCS says:

I LOVE to see people coordinating masks with outfits; when you are in public and have the resources absolutely go for it. Kate Beckinsale did it somewhere with a white/gold gown and looked amazing.

  7. OriginalLala says:

From a style perspective, I love both Kamala and Dr Biden, they always look so sharp!

  8. Becks1 says:

That purple looks divine on her. Michelle had a great sense of style too, what I like about both their styles is their clothes are very accessible. They look like what they are – successful career women who are starting a different phase in their lives/careers.

  9. sa says:

They all look great. I love everything about what everyone is wearing except for Jill Biden’s purple gloves. For me, they don’t work with her coat at all, partly because I just don’t like the colors together, but also because they’re so bright that they pull some focus from the gorgeous coat. But, I feel like my mom would have also paired bright purple gloves with that coat, so despite not liking the combo, it’s still somewhat endearing to me. (I don’t know if that makes sense at all).

    • Sophie says:

I agree, love everything and wish the gloves had been black. BUT I am so happy to have her in the WH!

    • JanetDR says:

I love how we are all different 😀 To me, the gloves elevate the coat but it would look better if the mask was purple too.

  10. Lemons says:

The purple for unity (red+blue) is a bit on the nose, but it looks gorgeous with the sunset.

    • BW says:

I hadn’t thought about blue + red = purple for unity. I was thinking royal purple. or just, really pretty purple.

I love both Kamala’s and Dr. Jill’s coats.

  11. Steph says:

Anything is better than Melania’s awful “I really don’t care, do you?” jacket. 🙄

  12. Soupie says:

I was totally stupefied by Jill’s purple outfit. Kamala loked amazing too. She is so photogenic. Both women always look so great.

  13. chimes@midnight says:

    I love that coat.

Wouldn’t it awesome if Dr. Biden taught Zoom classes from The White House? Safely and securely, of course. But it would be awesome.

  14. Loretta says:

    I love that purple coat!

  15. Hannah says:

TBQH I don’t give a flying fig what The First Lady wears. I just want her to be there to support the President, to help heal the nation with kindness, equality, equity, compassion and empathy. I’m British, so feel free to tell me to pipe down 🤐 I’m just overjoyed to have a ‘human’ in The White House again

    • outoftheshadows says:

No way, British friend. I second your statement (although of course Jill Biden looks lovely.)

Time to flush an orange turd!!!!

  16. Charfromdarock says:

Purple is my absolute favourite colour.

I love Dr.Biden’s coat, I love the whole outfit.
I loved all four coats, actually.

  17. mellie says:

It’s totally frivolous, but I’m so happy that I can feel ok talking about first lady fashion again. I know, she’s much more than what she wears, but still, I love fashion too! Even IF I did occasionally liked something that Melania wore I wouldn’t want to admit it because, ick….I hated to even support that bag.

  18. jaylee says:

I loved Dr Bidens’ purple tones & mix of textures. She has a feminine, professional flair that is pretty even though it’s not my personal taste. Madam VP Harris has a much more modern sensibility & I’m excited to see what she’s going to wear for the next 4 years. Melanias’ fashion was gauche & stupid, which was on brand.

  19. Chrissy (The Original) says:

Love everything Dr Jill is wearing, especially the grape juice-coloured coat and purple gloves (squee!!!!!!). But then I love anything purple. So, so wonderful to have empathetic, experienced and non-criminal POTUS & Vice-POTUS in the WH again. I hope everything goes well at the swearing-in. Good luck, America!

  20. Mignionette says:

I actually cried tears of relief this morning, knowing that finally there would be decent people in the WH.

I am hoping that the world will turn back correctly on it’s axis and that decency will filter it’s way through to the UK to correct the madness of 2016.

  21. Other Renee says:

This is the first time in my life that I woke up and said, “Yay! It’s Inauguration Day!” I am just so happy! I love purple and Dr. Biden looks stunning as does Kamala, soon to be our Vice President!

  22. jferber says:

I’m going crazy for the blue gloves. Dr. Biden, thank you for the wonderful job I know you will do as First Lady. Welcome back grace, kindness, hard work, empathy and honesty. President Biden looks (and acts) presidential. Welcome back, protection of the Constitution and doing stuff to benefit the people of this great country and to protect the whole world. I feel like I want to cry. Decency. Just plain and simple decency. I missed that so much. Welcome back, America.

  23. Mia says:

Yay!! Omg I can’t wait for more Kaiser Dr. Biden fashion coverage! That purpley colour looks amazing on her.
Also, I looooove that she teaches at community college. Having a first lady in that role – it’s a constant reminder to the nation that public education is important. Btw I think community colleges are still open but everything is online (depends on the state, everything is via video call in California).
After that guy was a dick to her about the “Dr” title I totally decided to apply to grad school lol

  24. BeanieBean says:

Eh, not fond of the everything matching mode. Doesn’t matter, they’re there, they’re safe, they’re the new day.

  25. Dollycoa says:

That purple is stunning, and I love how everyone callls her Dr Biden after those morons tried to discredit and minimise her achievements. As if any of them would even get close to getting an EdD!

  26. Bobbie says:

What does the Second Gentleman do? Lots of hosting and championing a self-selected cause? He’ll need to leave his job and devote himself full time. 🙂

    • Jaded says:

He’s already left his law practice to avoid any conflicts of interest. I think he’ll be a great adjunct to VP Harris’s role as he plans to focus his work as Second Gentleman on equal access to justice and legal representation. He also joined the faculty of Georgetown University Law Center in December as “Distinguished Visitor and as a distinguished fellow of the school’s Institute for Technology Law and Policy.”

  27. Coo Coo Catchoo says:

I loved how Dr. Biden’s inauguration coat had a little bling on it – just enough to catch the light. She looked beautiful. Vice President Harris dazzled in that gorgeous violet coat – she looked amazing!

  28. Jane Wilson says:

    I LOVED the lavender gloves!

  29. coolspray says:

I found Kamala’s out fit a bit too somber – she looks like a lawyer going to work… which as I type that, I guess she kind of is.

I preferred Jill’s outfit, I like the contrasting purples of the coat and gloves. I also like that whoever styled them resisted giving Joe a matching purple tie, which would have been the very obvious choice.

  30. mish-mash says:

The color was great on her….she’s not a cloths horse…
Michelle learned and Jill will learn also, she’s super fit…super smart..and super caring…
    what a change…
